Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA Premium App
I Have DS too
I'm in the same simple situation u r..
From the way i see it now, we need to BOOT with the XTC CLIP to make the DS S-Off
Then u should root it with SUPERONECLICK.. search on the forum ..
Finally, install any ROM u would like in ROM MANGER .. (CayanogenMod / CoreDroid..)
Hope i helped
p.s.
I'm searching a different way to S-Off The Device .. so if u find another way.. pls let me know

You're right in saying that the only way to root on DSS is currently XTCclip.
But as for ROMs the only ones you'd be able to instal (except official ones) are the customs that you'll find in the android development section of this forum (although I don't believe that any are available through ROM manager).
there are four or five different cooks.....to choose from, but the number has doubled in the last week alone so things are certainly looking up.

would i be correct in saying that once i s-off'd my phone and then rooted it, i would be able to uninstall the apps installed by my telco?
i'm not opposed to using the rom installed by my telco, it seems fast enough. i only want to uninstall their stupid bloody apps (which aren't actually apps, but rather links to their website).
Yes, you are right

Can you root using Gingerbreak ? Cuz i read that you need to flash an unsecured boot.img to make SuperOneClick work. What's the difference?
excellent.
i might look into buying myself an xtc clip.
unless a software method comes up soon.

yeah, i'll probably have a look around but they're not that expensive.
i could probably then re-sell it and make my money back.
@shrome
Yes u can use Gingerbreak. That's how I rooted mine since superoneclick wouldn't work. You'll get an error message which u can ignore and then just reboot. Greetz

Yeah, i know about the S-OFF part, I'l wait for 2-3 weeks, then use the XTC Clip. If gingerbreak is usable, why is there so much fuss about superoneclick?? There must be some cons......do you know any? Anyway, thanks !!!
Edit: i read somewhere that gingerbreak wipes the data on ur SD card. Is that true?

I used gingerbreak 1.2 to root after getting s-off and it has done nothing at all to damage my sd-card
It made the card un-mountable when you tried to temp root with out s-off, but that was easy fixed with a battery out reboot

Did you format your SD card or did it have data? Cuz the gingerbreak page says it's better to have a formatted one, but i don't wanna format, cuz there's a lot of data on it.

copy the data from the card to your computer first.
then after you've run gingerbreak, copy the data back.
or, go buy another sdcard. they're very cheap.
Please forgive me as I am definitely a complete newbie here. I am trying to root my DS so that I can hopefully run a Bluetooth RSAP app to link my car phone system. I have sent the phone away and had it made S-OFF and I have tried to download Gingerbreak from downloads it says "cannot open file" what am I doing wrong.

I've been thinking the same, also the gold card that the xtc clip makes worked in my old desire to flash ruu's that I couldn't previously flash no matter how many times I tried to make one,so maybe a copy of the card would work for all HTC's?

ok. I got an htc inspire 4g from a friend. when you look at the about phone in the settings menu, it says: model # htc inspire 4g. but when i go into android assistant app and go to tools>system info>platform info i get: device info: Manufacturer: HTC, Model: Desire HD, Device:ace, Product:htc_ace, Brand:cingular_us,Version:2.2.1.
does this mean that my phone has been rooted before or what?
No. There are many information pieces that state the name Desire HD. The Inspire is basically a Desire HD with a few differences.
The only major difference is the radio and audio chip.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
The Inspire is identical to the Telus Desire HD. Other than the firmware of course. They both also have 2 mics to aid in noise reduction. This is different than the European Desire HD which only has 1 mic.

I used bubby's to root mine, but I needed the zip from attn1 because of an issue with CWM not working right. Worked fine after that. I've since changed from CWM to 4EXTRecovery.

I used the one that you flash through recovery. You just install it from SD in CWM and it'll overwrite CWM. You don't have to unzip anything.

Download Absolute System from the market. It has a very easy to use build.prop editor. And it auto backs up every change you make. Change it, reboot, and you have an Inspire!

Advantages of S-OFF..
You can resize the 'system' partition.. So you can fit a larger ROM into it, without having to delete stuff from it..
You have complete control over your phone..
You can change SIM lock..
Right now you only have read/write permissions to the 7 partitions..
If you have S-OFF, you can duplicate someone's IMEI number, if you know what to do..
And do some other cool stuff..

The "S" refers to NAND storage security, so "Security On" and "Security Off". It has a number of effects, but the most obvious is that if you have both S-Off and root you can write to the /system partition while running Android, so easily remove system apps (device changing the sizes of the internal storage partitions is the main use).
I can write to /system/ while running Android without S-OFF.

How?? If you're talking about flashing ROMs, and removing or adding system apps, then we are saying two different things..
If not, then please elaborate..
I mean adding and removing files from /system/.
For example, I can remove Trebuchet.apk from /system/ with some kind of root explorer after installing Nova Launcher.

Yes that you can do from the OS.. You have unlocked bootloader, so you get access to these partitions.. But not to radio.. And also, you cannot write to any other partition, except /system and /recovery..

Download an RUU.. It'll be a *.exe file.. Run it.. Then, while it is running, go to Start > Run > Temp folder(the command should be "tmp" or "%temp%" or something like that, I've lost touch on windows)..
In that folder, you'll find all the files that the RUU extracted.. There should be a ROM zip, an HBOOT file, a DIAG file, etc.. Bring all the contents except the ROM zip itself..
Download the asian RUU.. I'm almost done with the European RUU.. And PM me the files.. :good:
Even though I followed the steps given on htcdev.com was unable to unlock the bootloader. The cmd window kept displaying waiting for device even though i had connected it to the pc.

Just download the latest version of HTC Sync from here. It contains the necessary drivers for Windows 8. Uninstall the current version (if you have installed it)
Also update the Android Platform Tools from SDK Manager
If this doesn't work install drivers with compatibility mode for XP sp3. I was thinking about another thread but this also should do the trick.
