Disadvantages??
You can easily hard brick your phone.. If you dont know what you are doing..
Other disadvantages are really dependant on perspective..
But this is the main disadvantage..

Advantages of S-OFF..
You can resize the 'system' partition.. So you can fit a larger ROM into it, without having to delete stuff from it..
You have complete control over your phone..
You can change SIM lock..
Right now you only have read/write permissions to the 7 partitions..
If you have S-OFF, you can duplicate someone's IMEI number, if you know what to do..
And do some other cool stuff..

The "S" refers to NAND storage security, so "Security On" and "Security Off". It has a number of effects, but the most obvious is that if you have both S-Off and root you can write to the /system partition while running Android, so easily remove system apps (device changing the sizes of the internal storage partitions is the main use).
I can write to /system/ while running Android without S-OFF.

How?? If you're talking about flashing ROMs, and removing or adding system apps, then we are saying two different things..
If not, then please elaborate..
I mean adding and removing files from /system/.
For example, I can remove Trebuchet.apk from /system/ with some kind of root explorer after installing Nova Launcher.

Yes that you can do from the OS.. You have unlocked bootloader, so you get access to these partitions.. But not to radio.. And also, you cannot write to any other partition, except /system and /recovery..

Download an RUU.. It'll be a *.exe file.. Run it.. Then, while it is running, go to Start > Run > Temp folder(the command should be "tmp" or "%temp%" or something like that, I've lost touch on windows)..
In that folder, you'll find all the files that the RUU extracted.. There should be a ROM zip, an HBOOT file, a DIAG file, etc.. Bring all the contents except the ROM zip itself..
Download the asian RUU.. I'm almost done with the European RUU.. And PM me the files.. :good:

I'm in the same simple situation u r..
From the way i see it now, we need to BOOT with the XTC CLIP to make the DS S-Off
Then u should root it with SUPERONECLICK.. search on the forum ..
Finally, install any ROM u would like in ROM MANGER .. (CayanogenMod / CoreDroid..)
Hope i helped

You're right in saying that the only way to root on DSS is currently XTCclip.
But as for ROMs the only ones you'd be able to instal (except official ones) are the customs that you'll find in the android development section of this forum (although I don't believe that any are available through ROM manager).
there are four or five different cooks.....to choose from, but the number has doubled in the last week alone so things are certainly looking up.

would i be correct in saying that once i s-off'd my phone and then rooted it, i would be able to uninstall the apps installed by my telco?
i'm not opposed to using the rom installed by my telco, it seems fast enough. i only want to uninstall their stupid bloody apps (which aren't actually apps, but rather links to their website).
Yes, you are right

Can you root using Gingerbreak ? Cuz i read that you need to flash an unsecured boot.img to make SuperOneClick work. What's the difference?
excellent.
i might look into buying myself an xtc clip.
unless a software method comes up soon.

yeah, i'll probably have a look around but they're not that expensive.
i could probably then re-sell it and make my money back.

Yes u can use Gingerbreak. That's how I rooted mine since superoneclick wouldn't work. You'll get an error message which u can ignore and then just reboot. Greetz

Yeah, i know about the S-OFF part, I'l wait for 2-3 weeks, then use the XTC Clip. If gingerbreak is usable, why is there so much fuss about superoneclick?? There must be some cons......do you know any? Anyway, thanks !!!
Edit: i read somewhere that gingerbreak wipes the data on ur SD card. Is that true?

I used gingerbreak 1.2 to root after getting s-off and it has done nothing at all to damage my sd-card
It made the card un-mountable when you tried to temp root with out s-off, but that was easy fixed with a battery out reboot

Did you format your SD card or did it have data? Cuz the gingerbreak page says it's better to have a formatted one, but i don't wanna format, cuz there's a lot of data on it.

copy the data from the card to your computer first.
then after you've run gingerbreak, copy the data back.
or, go buy another sdcard. they're very cheap.
Please forgive me as I am definitely a complete newbie here. I am trying to root my DS so that I can hopefully run a Bluetooth RSAP app to link my car phone system. I have sent the phone away and had it made S-OFF and I have tried to download Gingerbreak from downloads it says "cannot open file" what am I doing wrong.

I've been thinking the same, also the gold card that the xtc clip makes worked in my old desire to flash ruu's that I couldn't previously flash no matter how many times I tried to make one,so maybe a copy of the card would work for all HTC's?

Little confused between the Subject and the text.
"SD, finding the system in the root file" ??
Your phone is S-OFF have you also got su (i.e. root access) ?
If you want to go into /system just use ADB or something like Root Explorer.

In es file explorer goto settings and make sure all root options are checked.
On the main screen of es file explorer you should see a star or something in the upper left corner.

Why you can't see the files, I do not know, but the bootanimation.zip file is in:

If it doesn't work in /system/customize/resource try /data/local
However in your desc.txt file make sure you have a blank line in it after the 2 commands (the tutorial doesn't mention that)> You can download my boot animation as an example and just unzip it and look at the desc.txt file

I have been in a similar state before when i bricked my phone.
Nothing is going to happen to your phone. You were able to unlock the device, with the Unlock_code.bin from the htc website tutorial, isnt it...
The same way, try to get to fast boot by holding volume-down and power key. Are you able to get to the boot-loader menu? it shows fast boot, reboot, factory reset and sim_lock. Can you get to this screen? This shows the Hboot and Radio too.
I have upgraded my HTC Butterfly x920d to android version 4.2 sense 5 and the problem was internal memory doesnt show. I went back to recovery mode and i wiped all the data and also the backup. So now i cant go beyond the HTC logo screen, it stays frozen. I have tried TWRP Recovery but it doesnt work. Also when i try to flash a ROM it always fails. I have also tried CWM but tht didnt help either. Now i cant even flash a ROM or wipe any data in the memory. So if there is any way i can fix this please help me to fix it???? And I try to adb sideload but it didn't work all the opposition getting feild..:crying:

So I need to downgrade my hboot I have had a look at the official guide and it seems rather complicated for me I need it written clearly I no it says noob proof but unfortunately I can't get on with it what really does not help is that he does not provide the necessary files apart from the misc version its easy to say your need to use search when you know what your looking for I can't find any of the files I need. Thats good so u wont need a goldcard, u can use a wwe/eu ruu.
Unlock ur bootloader via htcdev then flash 4ext recovery. Click the link and download, then extract the PG88IMG of 4ext recovery and flash the recovery.img.
Plenty of guides here how to do that. Let me know once thats done.
Well I have 4ext recovery well pretty much everything I can flash custom just would like s-off so where would I find these ruu because HTC dev don't have them apart from Android 4.0 which is hboot 2. Unless you mean PG88IMG is like flashing a different version of 4ext? I'm sorry for all these questions just want a clear enough picture before I attempt the downgrade and thank you for helping me hopefully this one should be my last.

Struggling how? When u done the misc version, did u type in the number of the ruu ur going to use? 1.47.401.4
Can you check CID? That will help us to choose right RUU for your phone.
When you do misc_version successfully you have to reboot in bootloader and start RUU.RUU install from bootloader. Then it will check is your misc_version is ok.

The misc version has been detected by the ruu but it says that my battery is low when I try to flash it so it won't flash and my battery is 100% charged
