This thread is intended for stock users running 2.3.3 or OTA users to root.
I am not responsible for any damage to your phone.
Steps:
1. Download PC36IMG.zip from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141
Then place PC36IMG.zip on the root of SD Card.
2. Reboot into Hboot by holding the down volume button with the power button.
3. At the top of the Hboot screen, verify that "S-on" (Do not proceed is "S" is off.)
4. Allow PC36IMG.zip to update. this will flash the previous version of Android to allow for root to be accomplished by one of the many different ways.
Once flashed, "S" will remain on, so you will have to use a rooting method which turns this off.
If you are comfortable using ADB, that is looking like the best way to attain root. You can also use one click root tools also on this site.
Hope this helps. These are the steps I had to follow to root my HTC Evo that I got yesterday.

If this works there's a pretty big bounty to be had in the general section.

Do you want to reboot device?

Ok, this worked for me as of 10/20/10, i had my phone rooted by unrevoked, I am like many of the people here who kept having issues with all the PC36IMG.zip not working. I have extracted a new PC36IMG.zip from the ruu's and have not had any issues. I also had the dreaded "main version is older" issue. This seemed to take care of the issue! Im now back to stock!
Step 1 you will need to go here:
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/current/unrevoked-forever-son.zip
If you used Unrevoked Forever at any time, flash unrevoked-forever-son.zip from recovery until hboot shows S-ON(Credit to djR3Z tut)
Step 2
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=108Z9R8Y
This is the PC36IMG.zip file that you will need
- Put this on the root of your sdcard
- Boot into hboot and let it load up the PC36IMG.zip
- It will run like a normal update
- Reboot when finished
- It will do a few other things (Load radio and update)
- After it fully loads you should be back to complete stock!!!!
Lemme know if this doesn't work for you
LIKE I SAID THIS WORKED AS OF 10/20/2010!!!
I am not responsible for damages to your phone! You chose to go the route you did, so face the consequences, I'm just posting what has worked for me, so use at your own risk! Love the android, love my evo!
Has been tested and works if you have a rooted via unrevoked method.
So can I update my evo ota to 3.29.651.5 and then follow these steps? Right now I have the stock 3.26.651.6 rooted with unrevoked3. TIA

Im not understanding? If you apply just the PC36IMG you should at least lose root and be updated to latest update. You have to run the first tool to relock the bootloader. You will see in hboot if it is locked or unlocked. Locked is s- on unlocked is s- off
My bad, I was wanting to root or better yet, update to 29 and then root.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
yes you can achieve root on the new update through unrevoked. I'm not a fan of rooting this way, as people have had lots of trouble unrooting (had this problem myself). Thats why I came up with this tut so you can unroot if you have to send back to sprint. my method was the only one that worked for me to get unrooted.
people...just use unrevoked 3...i mean its a one click process...u dont have to do anything after that in about 2 minutes your rooted and nand unlocked =P

Just flash a ROM that's based on the 3.29 update.
Well hopefully this works. I'm not going to root with unrevoked again I don't think. It was much easier for me to unroot my last phone w/o using unrevoked.
Nope, as of 1/19/11 this does not work.
Will this work if I didn't use unrevoked? I am currently having an issue where my usb/charging port is not working properly and can not connect to the computer. I am rooted but need to unroot so I can send my phone back.

I tried just putting the pcimg on my sd card and power up into bootloader and it gives me an error saying that the image is older or something...Agh.
so I have an ATT Inspire 4G. I had it rooted by someone, and installed custom roms a few times before using the S-ON tool and unrooting using the radio I found on this forum, after trying to download the OTA 1.84 update. Now that I have the update, I want to know a simple, up-to-date method by which to root this. I am a n00b, but I did unroot/S-On it. I want to reroot it, and really get into modding my phone. thanks! Thing is I want an up to date method, not one which will brick my phone.
The hack kit will still do it.

That's a tall order considering just about anything you do has the potential to brick your device.
But to answer your question yourgonna have to read and research rooting the Inspired. Read the hack kit thread or bubbys One Click thread. At the very least you're gonna need S-Off to flash the rooted/ sideloading enabled stock ROM.

does it tell me what to do as I go along? I am a true n00b
so I'm lookin at the "effin manual" optional menu steps. If I install what I see on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042 will this get me the radio which is 1.84? If I'm gonna do this, I want a phone faster than non-modded, not slower, like when I previously had it done.
so now it IS rooted, and works except it still says "Desire HD" and I want it to be at least as fast as the it was when I got the 1.84xxx. What should I do now?

Which one are you downloading. I recommend the so version so you can have side loading options.
Just follow the steps attn1 provided. Don't extract the file. Rename to PD98IMG.zip. place in the root of your SD card(not in a folder). Verify the md5 sum. If it matches. Boot into hboot.(turn phone off. Press volume down +power button). It will find the file and install

the regular one. Wait so because I'm downloading the regular one, what won't I get? What exactly is "sideloading?" I mean like will I be able to use apps like the one required to find certain emulator roms? and should I flash it per the method of the hack kit which says "Before running this step you must:
Obtain a COMPATIBLE Inspire/Desire HD Radio in RUU format.
Name the zipfile rom.zip and place it in the romzip directory."
or
"Notes:
S-OFF is required to flash this
Rename to PD98IMG.zip and put it on your sdcard
Flash it from HBOOT when prompted to upgrade.
This WILL wipe data. Do a nandroid backup, then you can selectively restore data from nandriod after installing this (Provided you are coming from a compatible ROM).
I did not make this Clockworkmod flashable because it contains a radio. I believe the RUU method is a safer way to flash radios." from the thread on this radio?

so I'm done with attn1's hack kit for now? because that has an option to install your own radio, and I am downloading a radio. I supposed I should then disable USB debugging, and then put it into disk drive mode when the download finishes? Please walk me through, I'm still kind of a n00b, tho less of one now than before. Thanks a million!
Yes you are done with the hack kit. You are not downloading a radio. What you are downloading is a RUU. I believe it stands for rom update utility. Which is a rom plus a radio. Later on as you read up you'll see that you can flash radios by them selves (around 12mb)

Alright guys, this post is just for reference and ease. I've been using xda ever since I got my old HTC Hero a year and a half ago. Now I have the EVO and xda has been nothing but helpful to me. I've decided to make this post to try to help anyone that might not know much about android so I will make this a simple, easy to understand post tutorial.
HTC EVO 4G 2.3 Gingerbread root tutorial:
(Step 1) Power down your phone and take the battery out. Printed on the phone under the battery is a serial number. It is on the bottom line and usually starts with the letters: HT then a series of numbers and letters. Write this code down for you will need it later.
(Step 2) Download superuser from this link: http://www.mediafire.com/?q3ujsx1m4uq1662.
(Step 3) Download the HTC drivers from this link: http://api.viglink.com/api/click?for...13139469417033
(Step 4) Plug your phone to your computer and put the phone in disk drive mode. Now put the superuser .zip on the sdcard and change the mode to charge only.
(Step 5) Put the phone in usb debugging mode. Do this by: home>menu>settings>applications>development>usb debugging.
Also, enable fastboot. Do this by: home>menu>settings>applications>fastboot.
(Step 6) Got to: http://revolutionary.io/ Go down to the downloads section and select either windows or linux. (depending on your machine) Allow the file to download and proceed to the beta key generation.
(Step 7) Select your operating system (windows or linux) and your device and hboot version.
If you are unsure of your hboot version you can check by powering down your phone and holding volume down and the power button (make sure fastboot is turned off before doing this. just make sure to enable it again once you have checked and have the phone powered back up.)
Now enter your serial key (the code you got from under the battery.) select generate key and it will give you a beta key.
Make sure to keep the window open.
(Step 8) Extract the revolutionary.zip and run revolutionary. It should recognize your device and then ask for the beta key. Enter the beta key it gave you, remember it is case sensitive.
(Step 9) Revolutionary will now work its magic. Let it do its thing and DO NOT interrupt it. It may seem like it is frozen but it sometimes just takes a few minutes.
(Step10) After it gets done with all of its operations, revolutionary will ask if you want it to connect to the internet and download the recovery. type the letter "y" and hit enter. It will do it and then reboot.
(Step11) Now you need to flash the superuser .zip. Disable fastboot and and usb debugging and power down the device. Hold volume down and power at the same time until you get the hboot menu. It may check for an image and shouldn't find one. Just let it do its thing. Volume down and select recovery. It will reboot into recover. Now just volume down to install .zip then select choose .zip from sdcard and choose the su 2.3.6.3 efgh signed.zip and select yes. It will flash it. When it is done just reboot.
Congratulations. You are now rooted with superuser and s-off and have full root access.
Thank you, xda. I am grateful for this forum of great and helpful people, without you guys my android life would would be simply mediocre.

For the love of god, if you're already rooted (on 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3) flash whatever you want. Flash ginger roms, flash froyo roms, flash eclair. Thats the beauty of root. Flash wahtwver the hell rom you want. You Dont have to reroot or something to upgrade your google code.

Just cuz its new dont mean its better.... but if that what you want you obviously know how to get to development... Read Read and Read some more in here and pick a nice stock 4.24 rom or whatever you like...There are quite a few choices. What you dont need is to unroot upgrade and root again... Just as an fyi
need help
I have went through these steps and have a problem when I enter my bata code it keeps telling me it is invalid. also I have noticed that when I pull up boot loader it says supersonic EVT2-2 SHIP S-OFF but I don't have recovery so if I could get some help it would be much appreciated

The only reason to unroot and upgrade would be to get the new Sprint stock GB 2.3.3 ROM to have the latest HBOOT/bootloader. It's something I've been thinking about lately and just trying to debate on when I feel like this hour or so task. Is my thinking anyway, I'm just not sure if it is the best course of action or not (please feel free to post opinions)...
thank you

That's what I am wondering. Every other RUU he uploaded were zip files that you just flashed through HBoot & this one is a exe file. How do you use this? This is a non-Rooted Rom right?

Don't know exactly where you coming from and going to, 4.53 to 4.54? But something and that has been working and continued for me.
This ruu.exe is ran from the PC through usb debugging enabled, and having the correct drivers installed, I am on xp so I ran latest drivers maually, for higher o/s ver. its going to regonized the android and try to install autmatically....press stop/cancel you will need to configure it manually to have it install the correct drivers.
assuming you done this already, then enable settings>applic>develop>usb-deb and device powered on to home screen, from pc just double click the .exe and go through simple menu's and continue to process.
good luck and hope it helps..

it should!!!
brad
my dilemma is that I have a rooted evo running a synergy rom on Hboot .79 and Radio 1.39
thing is that the s status is S-ON on this particular phone and unrevoked forever does not work on that radio version.
I've tried to upgrade the radio through clockwork recovery with the prepackaged zip yet when I reboot the phone still shows the old radio version.
I've tried installing an RUU from the PC but they all error out.
I'm looking for an RUU packaged in an install-able .zip that includes updated Radios Kernels Hboot and ROM in one. Is that even possible so i can fix this phone and get it some updated radios?!

So I know you say it "should" but I don't want to RUU and then still have my batman logo as my splash screen, that would suck. I would ave to re-root it to try and find a splash .img, but I guess I will try it out and see if it works.

just saw you replied to me, sorry for the lateness. first of all, i would try aman ra for recovery, as many users have had problems with clockwork. as far as the ruu, how can you be s-on and still be rooted?

I have the opposite issue. I have S-OFF (Revolutionary) but on stock unrooted (brought the phone to Sprint for a broken power button, and they ended up not fixing it, but flashed 4.53 stock rooted).
How the hell do I get this ROM rooted since Revolutionary doesn't want to root it because the bootloader is unlocked and I can't go to recovery because once I'm on the HTC white background fastboot screen, the volume button are locked and my power button is dead anyway...
I'm trying this Ruu .exe hoping it will give me S-ON but I'm doubtful it will happen...
EDIT: Just as I thought, I'm now on stock rooted 4.54 with S-OFF. And no power button

They will always update the splash screen, it helps to identify the firmware and rom versions at a glance. During install the setup program will create a temp folder with PC36IMG.zip or update.zip look in this zip file and you should see a splash.img file or something like that (sorry haven't looked HTC updates since my Hero Days).

Any way to get this to be able to install through the bootloader because my usb port is broken on my phone and it won't stay connected to the computer and I need to get Unrooted, s-off, return to stock, stock hboot because I need to take my phone to Sprint to get phone replaced/fixed. Thanks.

Hello all, just got the MT4GS I have latest boot loader and update previous owner did it right before I purchased.
I thought we should get together and see what works and what doesn't.
I have tried the temp root method and SuperOneClick and the official HTC unlocker to no avail.
I know on some phones its possible to downgrade using some sort of official package or signed update. Is there such thing for our phone?
Threads I used for reference:
[APP]SuperOneClick v2.3.2 - Better LG Phone Support!
permroot for S-off MyTouch 4G Slide
Anyone notice the MT4GS Bootloader Unlockable?
Poking at latest OTA update for fun and profit
[TOOL] PERMANENT-ROOT (NEW!) & Temp-Root (v2) for any MT4GS (Windows)
There has to be a way to get this done. I found a signed and stock firmware and instructions

To undo the update/restore the stock firmware that came with the phone:
(Note: this will only work if you are still S-OFF even tho you have the new HBOOT version. If you are S-ON with the new HBOOT, then at this time there is no known way to revert... hopefully we can get the devs. of Revolutionary, etc, to update the root methods. Also, if you want to update just to check it out, make sure to turn S-OFF first if you'd like to give yourself the option to revert later.)
1. Download the stock firmware package from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1178082
2. Rename it PG59IMG.zip and put it on the root of your sdcard.
3. Boot into the bootloader('adb reboot bootloader' or power down the phone then hold volume down + power), let it read the update package, and press 'volume up' to update when prompted.
4. At the end it will prompt you to press Power to reboot. It scared me because when i pressed Power, the screen went off and seemed to not come back on, so i pressed power once again, and it booted into the system.
That's it! Just remember that if you do this, it will of course erase all your data... your phone will be like it was out of the box.

It won't work because the version is too old obviously. These are specially crafted archives with data in the beginning of the archive. You can't modify the android-info.txt because it throws off both winrar and 7zip.
I tried changing the version number in a hex editor. This makes the crc fail. Is there a way to just alter the crc to the new CRC? This way when HBOOT checks for the checksum it will pass and downgrade. I know for Unreal Tournament based games hackers would use a method called bytehacking where they are able to change certain values without upsetting CRC checks. Would something like this be possible?
I found a tool that recovers it and fixes it I have to try flashing in HBOOT but I doubt it will work I'm afraid the important data in the beginning. Maybe if I sign it, it will work?
The latest idea I had was using the OTA update, it contains a firmware.zip what if we modify the contents of firmware.zip with the contents of the stock firmware? You can flash using fastboot (i hope) as it will be formatted as an update and will downgrade the hboot as well.
are you S-ON? i mentioned in that post that it will only work if you happened to have S-OFF from before, which i did. but so far no one has been able to do anything with S-ON and the newest update. have you tried Tacoroot?
The search button is your friend ._., there are 5+ threads that share information and methods none of which work but the people on said threads are putting information and ideas out there.
Sorry noob question, just got the Mt4gs and It's updated to newest, how do I check if I am s-off or s-on? Also in short what does s-off/on mean? Thanks in advance.
Doubleshot on XDA App
Power the phone off with fastboot turned off. Or pull the battery when you power on hold the lower volume key and power simultaneously to boot into hboot. It will tell you S-OFF /S-ON. If you have latest OTA you're most likely S-ON.
S-Off: This term is used when describing the security radio. With S-on only signed ROMs may be flashed, when S-off unsigned ROMs may be flashed IE custom ROMs.

HYUH at team revolutionary has discovered that the new bootloader from latest OTA has hboot protection similar to Evo 3D. HYUH has also written a version of misc_version that writes to the correct partition for our doubleshot. Link here. Downgrade still doesn't work because when it checks hboot version it realizes its older and will abort.

correct. the only possible way to root is if your HBOOT happens to be S-OFF, in which case you could downgrade and then root. there is some work being done, but i don't know that anything has quite worked yet.
