[Q] Buying a new Android - General Questions and Answers

I am totally confused about what to buy... At present am considering Motorola Defy, Google Nexus S & HTC Desire Series
I don't wanna mod my phone for a year (till its warranty expires). I have to get satisfied with official updates for 12 months!
It should have a nice display (large enough), quality camera coupled with decent hardware
My budget is around Rs.15k (250 Euros)
Please help me chose my first Android

I guess the options u are considering for ur phone and ur budget is contradictory..
With ur price range,u can purchase only M Defy
Desire S is 22K
and Nexus is 20K

Sorry for the contradictory budget

Well my mistake.. It should have been roughly around 15Ks ~ 20Ks
Thanks for the rectification

If you don't want to mod your phone you shouldn't buy defy. It's a great phone, but without mods it's not the best. The best support comes with the Nexus S as it gets the stock Android so you don't have to wait for the manufacturer to update it. At the other hand HTC is one of the most reliable brand and Sense is really great.
I won't say you should buy one or the other because it's your choice, but for regular user (I mean non-developers) the desire s it better.

Most value is Samsung galaxy S2.
just my 2 cents

Now am even more confused :'(

Over here in India I've heard that after sales service of Motorola is not great. Thats why I'm a bit afraid of modding it till its warranty period is officially over. I'd love to tweak, but it seems that if I opt for Defy, I've to settle with Android 2.2 for a while atleast.
Moreover I'm a bit inclined towards Defy beacuse its cheaper (comparitively) & its rugged. I believe it has a good value for money considering the hardware it packs for €250.
Please do correct me if I am wrong. Purchasing a phone @ 15k INR is a big investment for me

you should only buy what you can afford bearing in mind that the mobile phone industry is constantly evolving.
My choice however goes for Nexus S...

I have DEFY and it was the best choice I could make. I can recommend it to everyone. If you can buy a Blur-less defy it's good for everyday use with the official 2.2 and you don't have to mod it.
But as you said it's a big investment and I don't want to give you bad advice. Defy is good for everyday use and gaming for a mid price and we shouldn't forget that it's life-proof (yes, that was an aspect for me). The truth is that I bought this phone because of the price, but if I could afford it I'd bought the Desire S.
I think YOU should make the decision, but whichever you choose you won't be disappointed.

From your choices, I'd go for Nexus s because its vanilla android (don't have any bloatware) and you'll get the updates faster than anybody else.
It may not be dual core but the hardware is good enough.

+1 for Google Nexus S

Desire for 16.5K (Not Desire S - It's not worth the huge difference over the Desire). The official GB update will probably be the last one for it, but, you can see the list of mods yourself for it.
Besides, I dont think its necessary to wait till the warranty expires, more so because the phones here ship with generic, unbranded and unlocked ROMs, so, getting back to them for warranty purposes shouldn't be an issue. (I modded my Wildfire in a week of getting it. )

Samsung Galaxy S2, best phone I ever had.

Out of those choices, get the Nexus S.
I'd root it instantly though.

Defy or Wildfire?

Please ref to http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3337&idPhone2=3514 I don't see any reason eXcept Sense UI (and the proposed Gingerbread update) why Desire should be preferred over Defy. Can you pls explain...
@PsHegger: Can a modded Defy has MotoBLUR in it? Desire is out of stock @ most of the stores over here... Nexus S (doesn't come with AM-OLED now a days) seems overpriced. Whats a Bloatware?
Will it be wise if I wait for Defy+?

My Mrs has the desire s, everything stock and its rapid very reliable great camera good battery, tough phone full metal skin, feels like a quality phone,
Or go budget and buy a used hd2 for cheap I've had mine for years now. Winner winner chicken dinner

Get the Nexus s , Its the best phone for your price range. I got mine a couple of months back and i rooted it recently. Its brilliant and i don't think you'll have any warranty issues also.
Think the LCD version is like 20K and the AMOLED version is 27K.
Even if you don't root the phone. You'll get the updates instantly.

Go for LG optimus black. Undoubtedly the best in the league. Display even beats the screen of iPhone 4

My Options
Price Index July:
Motorola Defy---------------------------- Rs. 15,500/-
Nokia C7 (may be Astound)---------------- Rs. 16,730/-
LG Optimus Black (P970)------------------- Rs. 19,500/-
Samsung (Google) Nexus S (LCD Version)- Rs. 20,000/-
Samsung Galaxy S i9000------------------- Rs. 21,000/-
HTC Desire S------------------------------ Rs. 22,500/-
LG Optimus 2X----------------------------- Rs. 25,500/-
To be honest I'm a bit inclined towards Defy & Nexus S... However I'd be glad to know more about two Motorola products: Defy+ & Droid 3... What can be the expected price of Droid 3? Should I wait for it?

Hero or the Backflip

Hi,
I am new to this forum.
I have joined because I have many questions to ask haha.
I'm currently looking to buy a new cellphone.
Right now I am looking at the HTC Hero or the Moto Backflip, but I am also open to suggestions.
What I'm looking for is a solid phone that would last me a good 2-3 years, with a touchscreen and wifi are musts.
I have heard that Android is probably the best OS out there, so i would highly prefer it.
A qwerty keyboard would be nice since i like to use MSN on it. However, it's not a must have.
What i usually do on the phone is just browsing some web pages, youtube, msn, and facebook using wifi.
I do not want a data plan that is why I am looking to buy the phone unlocked on ebay.
My maximum budget is 400 dollars.
Now my question is,
I heard that the hero is a great cellphone, and I am willing to pay an extra 100$ over the backflip's price to get it if it is indeed a great phone.
Would you guys suggest me get the hero? or to get the backflip that has a qwerty keyboard? I have heard that the backflip will have android 2.1 on it, is the update out already??
Or if you guys can suggest another good phone that would be great too!
The price on ebay:
$400 for hero
$300 for Backflip
Please give me some suggestions!
I have read in another thread someone said the Hero is outdated already???
Hasn't it only been out for about half a year only?
If it is outdated, what phone should I go for that is within my price range??
thanks
Hero 100%. Better design, HTC, support, not crippled, gorgeous looking, the list goes on. The backflip has no support from here, and personally I think it's basically the GSM version of the devour. Ugly, boring, no support, and you never see em'
Please get neither if you are willing to spend 400. Both phones are a bit outdated and will have a hard time holding up 2-3 years. Get a nexus one or a Droid (milestone ) for that price

Thanks for your opinion!
I found that the milestone might be a good option since it's within my price range and has a physicial keyboard.
The $600 nexus ones on ebay are a bit beyond what I am willing to spend haha.
So will the Motorola Milestone be the best choice if I have $400?
How's the processor??
Motorola Milestone is an ok choice, but you should try it out first. I would rather stay with HTC devices.
What HTC device would you recommend me to get then ?
Hey, so I'm looking into buying a new phone and the now I'm down to the hero and the backflip. I have never had an android phone before so the phone I decide on can't be too complicated. I'm 14 and I text a lot so the phone has to be able to type easily and fast. Please give me advice if you have experience with one or both of these phones.
Is there any other advices?
I am buying my new handset soon!
+1 for the n1 as already suggested above. You can also look at the HTC Aria or Samsung Captivate.
Unfortunately the Nexus one and the other ones you suggested are somewhat beyond my price range $400 is really my maximum. Unless I can get a used one somewhere ...
As it is one of your original options, I will give my opinion on it : The hTC Hero
Had one of these for a while (by my standards) for now, and its a pretty solid device. Okay, it isn't the fastest processor, and it has likely recieved its last official rom, but i love it
Have just got Éclair running on it, and there are noticeable differences since android 1.5, although no live wallpapers (not that i see this as much of a loss, as I don't tend to just sit and stare at my home screen, i try to use the phone)
There are plenty of apps for it, plenty of custom roms, and a sizeable (albeit not the biggest) user base on xda.
The build quality is pretty decent - it has withstanded my daughter standing, jumping, chewing, and dribbling all over it, so it has passed that test for me.
In my opinion, the downside is the camera - there is no flash. But even then, it is not the worst camera I have had on a phone.
Hope that helps
If you are on ATT and you have $400 you should go with the HTC Aria you can get it off contract for $350. Even though its only a mid level phone it is a much better and newer phone then the Hero and the Backflip.

[Q] which phone shall I buy ?

I need an unlocked phone
Thing iss my budget is 350
Maximum
I was thinking of getting a x10 used
or just get a samsung s.
Whats your opinion?
Thanks. Andriod only though. can you give me other choices ?
Thank you.
If you like messing around with your phone (Flashing, tweaking, modding, etc.) and the T-MOUS HD2 works in your area for 3G, go with that.
Otherwise, a used Nexus One or HTC Desire I'd say... The X10 isn't what it's cracked up to be.
Who is your carrier and in what country?
i don't like samsung ,because my sister have one , voice of it very low
Well I can start by saying there is a huge difference between a nexus s and a x10. They both suck. The nexus s is a Samsung and it's already falling behind many android phones about to be released, nexus s is much better than the Sony tho. I olwould wait a month or so and you can get a dual core. They are on the way.

Shop around. Keep your options open. Plenty of phones out there that are better than the x10 Sam S. Check Craigslist, ask your friends, etc. You can get a good deal for 350.
Desire Z/G2 is another option you might want to consider.
I bought my new desire hd a week ago and its amazing...highly recomended!
i think samsung galaxy s is the best at the moment

[Q] What will your next device be?

Hey guys,
As we all probably know, most of us are not happy with motorola's product the XT720 and some of us are stuck with it just because we paid so much for the phone. The locked bootloader and poor support are just a few reasons to hate moto.
I'm interested in knowing what your next device would most probably be when eventually you want to move on and ditch motorola. For me it'd most likely be either a google product or something from the samsung range. Unlocked boatloaders, great support and constant updates + powerful hardware. Please enlighten me!
too early for me to say for sure as i dont have plans to get anything new anytime soon, but: 1: not motorola 2: probably either a SE device as i love how they look and they seem sincere in their support for their devices or a nexus line. all subject to change of course
In October, I can get me a new mobile (I can extend my contract). If nothing better comes in, then I will choose one of the following devices:
-Motorola Atrix
-Motorola Milestone 3
-HP Pre 3 (yeah, WebOS fascinates me )

Booo motorola . Good devices though.
While we're considering other OSs I'm intrigued by the Nokia WP7 device. WP7 actually looks very attractive, smooth and fluid - I just worry I would get bored of it after a little bit to be honest. WebOS has some nice features but I'm concerned about lack of apps and support for it and also it doesn't look as attractive as Android or WP7 to me.

SGS2 for me.. keeping my hands off from HTC till they fix the deathgrip issue, and also their recent flip-flopping on signed bootloaders makes me think thrice..
HP Palm still pre not very stable...
Motorola Atrix? Afaik there is already speeches about it's glass e.t.c, but battery power 1960mAh..
MS3? When it will be...
For me: new nexus from google... maybe.
As i can say: NO, NO,NO to htc and moto.
Everyone else.. maybe..
My contract is also expiring next month, so I'm looking for new handset already. So, what's in my mind???
1. Motorola Atrix
Ya, most of you will said no more Motocrap. I always like Moto's hardware quality. So, if and only if they unlock the bootloader and it is possible to install custom roms like CM7, then I would take it. (There is already a leaked rom with unlocked bootloader. Everything is working except it's just not official update)
2. LG Optimus Black
This slim and shady guy is very slim and light-weighted. And truly it is a hacker's phone. Nothing is locked down. opened booloader, open NAND, now CM7 is already on the way to this phone. The problem is, LG's hardware quality is crap. And I also have doubt that this one would qualify.
3. Samsung Galaxy S II
Like it very very much. It has been a dreamed phone for me recently. But it's a bit pricy. S$348 with 2 years contract @ Starhub. Unless they give me a $200 discount voucher, I won't buy this phone.
4. Google Nexus S
If the 3 above is not applicable, this guy will be mine. No SD slot but 16Gb of NAND drive is more than enough for me. Though one this is still bugging me, no HDMI output. hmmm
guys, let me hear your suggestion. which one shall I take?
Just checked out the ATRIX. Wow, lol I want one. Its uncanny how even after the XT720 motorola continues to seduce me...haha
Well I got the XT720 because of the Xenon flash.
Not many phones out there with a Xenon.. may have to switch to another OS whilst I wait for an Android device with Xenon.
Definitely iPhone
Hey please don't kill me. Haha JK
It should be definitely next Google Nexus phone. Yes Google Nexus is win!

if you like the galaxy s2 so much, you could always cross the border and buy it there, its only RM2099 (around SGD854) compared to SGD998, or wait for the cheaper galaxy Z (Tegra2/SLCD/5mp)..
Optimus Black and Nexus S is not in the same league as Atrix and SGS2, so those should not be compared directly..

The app cataloque on WebOS has about 4600 apps at the moment including Angry Birds. So yeah, not as much as Android yet, but it's definetly a lot and it will get more once the HP Touchpad comes out later this month
And lack of support? WebOS get updates every 6 weeks or so and upgrades when an upgrade is ready (most of the time, that is).

Worth upgrading to Nexus S form Desire?

I'm planned to buy second hand Nexus s mobile for 350USD.
Is it worth buying Nexus S.
I own a Nexus One (same internals as a desire) and bought a Nexus S. The difference is very noticeable. CPU and GPU have more power and the screen is very nice. NFC is a cool feature that I found myself using a lot (I bought custom tags and use NFC task launcher http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1359057) The prospect of getting an official release of ICS is nice too. I've tried it on both and the performance is much better on the NS. All and all, I think it's a good upgrade. You just have to decide whether it's worth $350 or not. I did.
Maybe if you can trade your current phone and that cash, a better phone can be had.

I think if you have to ask the question, this means you're not sure, so the answer is probably "no." That looks like an expensive price for a used handset.
If you have a burning reason why you need to upgrade from the Desire to the Nexus S (better performance, NFC, AMOLED) then fair enough, but without a little more background, it's hard to quantify.
Not worth it for that price.
Too much for that price. Maybe you can still haggle

It's a little more for a new one. I recently got one. But hm... Is it heavily used or beat up? I would try to bring that price down, or as someone else mentioned trade in your phone too for a better phone. Regardless the Nexus S is an amazing phone. Very smooth, TONS of development still being done on it. It was Google's flagship phone of coarse. To this day I think it hold more than it's own against even some dual core phones.
consider money is not a problem in my below opinions, i just had to share my thoughts as a fellow Desire user.
mate, if you are from Desire, i think you better go for dual core. I had a Desire and then upgraded to SGS2. and it was a great phone and still are. One of the best HTC phones ever made. i missed it sometimes.
But going for Nexus S? unless you are totally new to smartphone, then yes it is worth it. From Desire then it is not. I gave my Desire to my mum and got me a SGS2. I bought Nexus S soon after that as my 2nd phone. Yes getting ICS first is awesome but it can be pretty sluggish at times, and the performance are actually the same as Desire had, except a stable ICS. IMO, go for dual core, or to be more specific, Galaxy Nexus if you want stock AOSP experience. I'm getting one soon too as my 3rd phone.

Which one of these is a good phone to buy?

Hello XDA!
Its time I got a new phone, and there are many choices in the market at the moment.
I have a LG Optimus One P500 (The most awesome, 600mhz, Jelly Bean running phone! )
And I wanted to know if I should get a phone or stay with this one.
My range is $150-$300, THOUGH I could exceed a bit.
My choices are:
HTC One V
LG Optimus Black
Xiaomi Mi-One Youth
I would've chosen the Mi-One, but it has to be shipped all the way from China, and I have to pay in advance, so I'm not really sure about that.
Also! If YOU guys have any phone that is in the price range, and is good, please vote as other and post it!

Out of those options I'd say Optimus. However, if you're on the market for a 600 MHz phone, I might recommend getting an X10 Mini Pro for a much cheaper price (if you can find it used) or, even better, an SK17 Mini Pro.
if i were you i would wait until google release a Nexus Quad-Core... and while waiting... save $$ for that !!! it will be the best phone ever! awesome hardware + google updates xd
Samsung Galaxy SIII
Thanks for the replies guys! My phone is 600mhz so not looking for that, but luckily my brother is giving me his iPhone 4 for free since he never uses it, which I'm planning to sell and buy something nice, so i might as well save up for a 9000 core phone
