[Q] ROM flashing? + stock root HELP!! - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

1I know this has been asked somewhere but what happens when Asus releases minor updates? We have to flash a new rom that will wipe our data??
2Also if I root using the androidroot.mobi procedure, which will give me cwm + Prime (1.4/1.5) can i flash the stock asus rom? will i lose root?
Please help
PS: I am aware of the pure root method but i cant download the file from megaupload. can anyone upload it on dropbox etc.

You have tutorials to just add root for your stock rom, you have cooked rom like Prime or you have stock roms with root.
A cooked Rom like Prime is good because it has minor changes that improves the experience of using your tablet. Everytime ASUS updates (Android 3.2 coming soon) Prime will also update and u dont need to lose your data.
But you can follow the tutorial, downgrade + root + install recovery and leave the tablet as stock rom just having root. So you can use apps that need root.
If you're scared that one day you gonna need to return the tablet for warranty, there is also tutorials to put it back to the start as if it was new.
So i think you should give Prime Rom a try, you will love it.

thanks for the quick reply

Just used the megaupload link less than 10 minutes ago and it was working fine.

Root question before I start

I have a B60 transformer with 3.2.1 HTK75_US_epad-8.6.5.13 on it.
From the reading I have done I should be able to use the 7.1 universal root kit.
My questions are
Where can I get the stock ROM to unroot it and set back to stock if I need to?
Other than updating CWM after using the root kit is there anything else I need to do.
I have rooted my EVO 4g phone and swapped out the rom many times so I'm hoping it is a lot like that but I'm new to this and just do not want to make any mistakes. I have tried to search and read as much as I can but there is tons of info on the forum and lots of it does not match or is very old.
Sorry if this is a newbee questions but I have to learn somewhere.
If you have links please post them and I will read that info.
Thanks
Brandon
ASUS has the stock roms on their website, but the 8.6.5.13 probably isn't available yet as a full rom, just an OTA. There are older versions available, such as 8.6.5.9, but I'm not sure if you can flash to an older version with the built in updater. Once the full rom is released, chances are better you can update back to stock. With nvflash and your B60, you can flash anything you want.
I haven't tried it, but I think that that root tool will let you back up before you flash.

Yes, it will ask you if you want to backup before you root but it tells you it could take 4 to 5 hours.
I have rooted and unrooted with this below method many times. I don't need to go looking for a stock rom...it simply reverses the procedure as far as I know...look into it...now if you go for a custom rom your on your own.

Thank you everyone for your answers, I did the full backup which did not take long as I had done a reset before I started and wiped everything.
The root was painless and is done.
For now I think I will stay with the stock ROM but I'm now going to look for a Kernel to OC it to 1.2-1.4 if I can.
Thanks again
Brandon

Go back to original ROM, get official updates again

About my TF101: rooted, Revolver 3.9.5 running without any issues.
So my question: if there should be any hardware problems and I want to go back to an official firmware:
- Where do I download stock-FWs? For example: if I want a stock-FW for my Galaxy S, there's samfirmware.com (now it's called sammobile.com). Is there a page like this for the TF?
- After flashing a stock-FW will I receive official updates again? Only reason would be, if Asus releases ICS (I love it on my Galaxy S) and I want to have it ASAP.
Thanks
you would have to unroot first I don't think just installing stock firmware would be good enough. Asus website has the stock firmware for download, but it is v8.6.5.13 not v8.6.5.19 but I think if you use that to unroot then you should be able to upgrade OTA with whatever the latest is. IF ICS is the only reason you would want to do that, why not just wait, the dev community here updates their ROM's fairly quickly after an update from ASUS from what I've read
Yeah, Asus is really very fast with upgrading the TF, I just wanted to know how to get updates again.

Here are two threads that people have had success with, you can pick and choose which one to try to unroot and go back to stock recovery.

Ok, thank you, maybe I'll try it soon.
Is the US ROM from Asus the same as used on the UK machines ?

[Q] Backing up apps

Hey everyone I love my transformer but I think i want to go back to stock before ICS hits. I'm planning on un rooting using The unlockr's method and want to know if it is possible to back up my apps. While i know it is possible to back up your apps on a rooted tablet it seems like you are only able to also restore them onto a rooted device. I have tried to use the Asus app back up but it doesn't seem to work (I am on revolver 3.10)
Does anyone know of any other apps that can do this or would revolver 3.11 fix the asus app ?
Don't give up your root! You may not be able to get root after the update. And if i were a betting man, I'd bet that Revolver will have an ICS build soon after the OTA. I'll either wait on that or CM9.

Agreed. There isn't even a release date for ICS for the 101 right now. You could go through all of this and ICS not drop until March some time.
If you just don't need root, you could try just pulling the .apk's for downloaded apps. No guarantee that would work though.
You can use Root Toolkit to do an APX backup of all your TF. It doesn't need root to do the backup and its able to clone the state of the TF.
Ok thanks everyone I was just thinking of going back to stock because I don't use rooted stuff and i would prefer the updates that Asus is really good at doing. Yet if it's possible i couldn't regain root well then mind as well keep it as is.
There is conflicting reports that the TF101 will have the bootloader unlocked and ics released at the same time as TF201; Jan 12
Cheers!

For backing up apps & data, I really <3 MyBackup Root. Super-simple user interface, and does everything I want.

stock us/ww on cn tft101,help needed

hi guys
I need a bit help. I bought my tf101 in china and now i need to flash another rom to get access to google play etc.
I have been reading about the reboot issue of ics so i think i wait for asus to fix it before i go there. I think i should stick with 8.6.5.21?I am on stock 8.4.4.11cn.
I have been reading up onth flash threads and it seems that i need to root then install cwm and then flash, right?
Do i need to backup something first? I dont have any info on the cn rom that i need and i dont want to go back to it again.
I have aleready downloaded root and cwm but i cant find ww 8.6.5.21 anywhere, anybody help with link?
well, actually i dont care if it is stock. Most of all i want to get rid of the chinees crap and have google play and youtube on my tf101.
For the moment i also want avoid going to ics until random reboot is solved.
Any help or suggestions?

Thinking of rooting, questions

Hey guys! New and proud TF300T owner. I got it last Friday and am absolutely LOVING it so far. This will be my 8th android device of all time and I am starting to get that itch to root it. First and foremost, i'm on the .30 firmware. This is the newest version and it updated as soon as i turned it on. I'm hoping that won't be a problem.
My first question, should i root? I'm loving ICS and i haven't seen a LOT of different ROMs available in the thread. Since this is my first android Tablet i'm sort of asking myself, why should i root? The Pad is very, very fast. The OS is nearly perfect. So i'm wondering, besides the obvious "Because we can" answer, why did you root yours?
I saw this guide :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1706588
Do you guys think its the best way to go? Should i unlock w/Asus tool before i start this guide? Can anyone recommend a rom? I heard CM10 is coming to the 300 and i have always loved Cyan since my days with the G1.
So, in conclusion.
1. What do you, personally, feel are the advantages?
2. Is the guide above the SAFEST way to root? (DEFINITELY don't want a brick)
3. Unlock bootloader?
4. Roms?
5. If it ain't broke, don't fix it? Or - If it ain't root, lets break it? hehehe
Thanks in advance for your responses!!!
It all depends on you. I rooted mine and am using CM10 (Jellybean 4.1.1) and love it. Stock is actually pretty good though on this device, usually stock Android blows. I would think you would have to be dumb to brick your device at this stage, everything is pretty simple, and you have ways to getting back to stock with ease anyway.
This is what I did. I unlocked my boot loader using the tool from asus, I then flashed CMW from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668173 , after booting into fast boot (power on, hold down vol, on the next screen you have three icons, select the middle one), and then flashed the root file. You have to put your ROMs you want to flash on the tablet memory, CMW doesn't support external memory yet.
Have fun!

I question for you? Now that you are running CM10 Jellybean, do you see any improvement with the I/O problem (very slow R/W) and what about flash player? Thanks

1. What do you, personally, feel are the advantages?
adjust settings, and run cmd's or scripts from cmd line
which can not be done without root
lots apps require root as well
2. Is the guide above the SAFEST way to root? (DEFINITELY don't want a brick)
yes the debugfs link you posted is the safest way to root, and it is drop dead easy
3. Unlock bootloader?
I did, and I don't regret
4. Roms?
hydro is based on stock and is smokin fast
night and day difference
5. If it ain't broke, don't fix it? Or - If it ain't root, lets break it? hehehe
if it aint root, let's break it!
I could not handle not having root
there's too many things I do that require it
Thanks for the great responses guys! Think i'll go ahead and get started...So,
1.Asus Unlock Tool
2. Root
3. TWRP flash, back up current rom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=D2ATyGP5JAk#!) using this guide
4. Flash rom!
5. Success!
Sound right?

sounds right, I do have 1 suggestion or maybe just a simplification
if you plan to use TWRP
download gooManager from the play store, it has an option that will install TWRP for you automatically
and also don't forget
step 3.5 go into TWRP and make a nandroid backup, and copy the backup to somewhere same
I doubt you'll have any issues, but better to have a backup
and not need it
than need a backup and not have it
Just my personal opinion ... unless you just have to have a custom ROM, forget unlocking and just root it. You won't violate your warranty and we're going to be getting jelly bean in a few months from Asus. This is exactly what I did running v30 and I'm loving it this way. Stock ROM isn't too bloated.

Yeah...I haven't taken the plunge yet. Its my day off and i love tinkering with stuff like this but i'm just having a hard time justifying unlocking/flashing on a device that already performs so well. Torn!

First answer, rooting isn't the same as unlocking and flashing! You can root without unlocking, like others have said there aren't that many ROMs out there and the stock is pretty good IMO.

Hey, I just unlocked my tf300-will I not be able to get jellybean at all when it comes out?!
You will have to flash the stock update through cwm or twrp, whichever recovery you used.

I havent unlocked yet but its my day off now and im thinking about doing it now. The only thing im worried about is i keep seeing people having issues like "soft brick after restore"...i mean whats that about? I have backed up/restored and flashed a million roms on all my other unlocked android devices over the years and have NEVER had a soft brick just doing a restart? I mean i suppose ive gotten a bad rom before that wouldnt boot but when that happens i just usually go back to recovery and restore what i had before. Also, it seems like TWRP has more issues then CWM at this point. Is that just me, or is that true ? What the advantage of TWRP then if that is the case? Sigh...I wanna unlock and flash it so bad! But i just can't bring myself to do it for some reason!
