Hello everyone,
This thread is for those of you who have manually edited their APNs to increase data speeds. In my APN thread, every once in a while I see a complaint where the user says the "Phone" APN (which is the 2nd APN) will not stay selected. Historically I've been telling people to reboot their phone and try again, or try adding a 3rd APN (for some reason when a 3rd APN is entered, the 2nd one will usually stick). I have seen this problem myself. There may be a more elegant and effective way to prevent this issue, which is what this new thread is all about.
I took another look at the default APN config in the stock updated ROM (the OTA HSUPA update that came out at the end of April), and noticed that the "Phone" APN (which is the APN that provides the faster speeds in some markets) is listed first. As most of you already know, this APN is missing from all custom DHD/Inspire ROMs, which is what prompted this procedure in the first place. For simplicity, my APN procedure (up until now) has been telling people to just add the "Phone" APN as the 2nd one. Speed wise, it doesn't matter which order the APNs are in, just as long as the "Phone" APN is selected and stays selected, but some people have trouble with the selection reverting back to the 1st (slow) APN, sometimes later on without their knowledge. In this new procedure that is listed below, it tells how to delete all your APNs so you can start from scratch, and then add the fast "Phone" APN first, to ensure it will always be selected since it is listed first. The 2nd APN is merely for MMS. This APN layout is the same as the stock ROM.
This procedure "should" work on all ROMs, but that's why I'm asking for beta testers to see what problems arise. I want to get some feedback before officially updating my APN thread in the dev section. Anyone that performs this beta procedure and provides feedback, I will click on their "thanks" button.
Standard warnings apply: make a nandroid backup before making this change, etc. Messing with your APNs is messing with your data connection, but everyone should know that already.
Step 1. Delete all APNs:
Press Menu button --> Settings --> Wireless and networks --> Mobile networks --> Access Point Names
Press the left side of your 1st APN to go into the settings of this APN, then press Menu>>Delete APN.
Repeat this process for any other APNs you have. The goal is to delete all APNs so we can start from scratch.
Now do the next steps in the same order as below:
Step 2. Create a new APN (Menu>>New APN) with these settings, everything is case sensitive. This will be your 1st APN:
Name: MEdiaNet
APN: Phone
MMS protocol (if applicable): WAP 2.0
MCC: (don't change this number)
MNC: (don't change this number)
APN type: default, admin (notice there is no space on either side of the comma)
APN protocol (if applicable): IPv4
everything else: <Not set>
Press Menu>>Save. You will now be back at the initial APN screen.
Step 3. Create a new APN (Menu>>New APN) with these settings. This will be your 2nd APN:
Name: MMS
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Username: [email protected]
Password: CINGULAR1
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cinguar.com
MMS port: 80
MMS protocol (if applicable): WAP 2.0
MCC: (don't change this number)
MNC: (don't change this number)
APN type: mms, supl (notice there is no space on either side of the comma)
APN protocol: IPv4
APN protocol (if applicable): IPv4
everything else: <Not set>
Press Menu>>Save.
You will now be back at the initial APN screen again. Make sure the 1st APN (named MEdiaNet) is selected (via the round radio button on the right side). Your data connection will drop for a few seconds.
We're done. Let me know if you have any problems. If for some reason you notice your speeds are slower or faster, this is due to the normal wide variance in AT&T network speeds. If you were already using the custom APN config, there is absolutely no reason why this APN config would slow you down or speed you up; all we're doing is changing the order of them.
If you need to revert back to your default APN config, from the APN selection screen just press menu and select "Reset to default". Or worst case scenario, simply restore your nandroid backup.
Confirmed working: Virtuous Unity, CM7, NINJA-0706, HoneyGen
If you posted this yesterday, I would've been first in line to experiment. But I've finally stabilized my data speeds after countless days & hours of tweaking (using your methods, and others I've found around here).
Have you ever experimented with [email protected] (as opposed to [email protected])? This has given me better speeds, both when I was stock and on a custom ROM.
EDIT: I've read through your entire thread and don't remember if someone else had the same problem or not. When using the two APNs method, my connection would drop temporarily (always reconnected within a few seconds though) sometimes. Is this something you've seen happen?
Ill give this a shot! Always helping people out

I can do this. I am currently running Virtuous Unity 1.27.0 on my Inspire but am willing to test on Inspired Ace or ClearDroid as well.

No worries. As the old saying goes, "don't fix what ain't broke". Especially if the road to stability was a long one.

I just tried it and saw no difference. In theory, this shouldn't affect anything speed wise, since this username is only located in the APN used for MMS (when using the dual APN config). Maybe you've been experiencing the normal crazy AT&T speed inconsistencies, and it was just a coincidence that your speeds were faster when using the alternate username? Just a thought.

Personally I've never seen this issue. My phone doesn't normally drop its connection, regardless whether I'm on 1 or 2 APNs (unless I'm in a very low signal area of course). Sounds like your ROM didn't like having its APNs messed with, or something else was going on. Hard to tell.
Thanks for your feedback BTW.
@XAviierG, bcd420, biglittlegato - thanks guys!!!
biglittlegato, if you're willing to test on multiple ROMs then go for it! I won't stop you. I'll thank you every chance I get.
Rockin the new settings now. Will try mms next. Coverage is spotty here, will know more once I get her back home.
Edit: mms works. So far data is much slower. Will try next to the good tower after work.

Cool, thanks for the update. This new APN layout definitely shouldn't cause any slowdowns, so you were probably just experiencing some slowness in your area.

Where I work I bounce from 0-4 bars of EDGE to 0-2 bars of HSPA while sitting still. There is a tower in town where I typically get 3 to 4 mbps down and have seen as high as 5.5 down. My typical uploads are 1 to 1.5 mbps. Since the APN change I am getting 500 kbps down with 150 kbps up. I'm sitting about 3 miles from the good tower. I'll report back after I run some tests closer to the good tower. I figure I'll run this setup for a couple of days and then try again with a different rom.

I just installed ClearDroid 1.1.4 and I don't think this is going to work. The first APN is locked (wap.cingular) and there is no way to delete it. Nothing happens when you press menu, just the keyboard from a long press of it.

Yeah I forgot that some ROMs have a locked APN, so this procedure will only work on the less restrictive ROMs. Thanks for checking though.

Edit: Updated 7.31.2011 to include new "hipri" APN type, and a totally new procedure to prevent APN selection problems.
Just a quick note: the discussions in posts 2 through 169 of this thread are now deprecated, as the original post was totally different at that time. Posts 170 and onward are relevant to this heavily revised original post. So any procedures/workarounds in posts 2 - 169 should be ignored or taken with a grain of salt.
BACKGROUND
The stock Inspire ROM contains 2 APNs (Access Point Names) in the mobile network configuration. One is for data, and one is for MMS. Almost all of the custom Inspire/DHD ROMs on this forum only have 1 APN, where data and MMS are combined. This single APN is sufficient to obtain maximum data speeds in some markets, however in many markets such as mine, your phone needs to be running a dual APN configuration similar to the stock ROM to obtain maximum speeds.
As always, before making any major config changes be sure to fully backup your ROM. If you mess up real bad or something goes unexpectedly wrong, then you might permanently lose your connection with no recourse other than a complete restore.
These changes are for the United States AT&T network only.
FIRST, DETERMINE IF YOUR ROM HAS A LOCKED OR UNLOCKED APN CONFIGURATION
From your home screen, press the Menu button --> Settings --> Wireless and networks --> Mobile networks --> Access Point Names. If you see a lock symbol on your APN, then you'll need to jump down the locked APN procedure further down this post. For everyone else with an unlocked APN configuration, procedure is immediately as follows.
PROCEDURE FOR ALL ROMS THAT HAVE UNLOCKED APNs:
Step 1. Delete all APNs
If you're not already at your APN screen, then from your home screen press Menu button --> Settings --> Wireless and networks --> Mobile networks --> Access Point Names
Press the left side of your 1st APN to go into the settings of this APN, then press Menu>>Delete APN.
Repeat this process for any other APNs you have. The goal is to delete all APNs so we can start from scratch.
Now do the next steps in the same order as below:
Step 2. Create a new APN (Menu>>New APN). Everything is case sensitive and must be entered exactly as below. This will be your 1st APN:
Name: MEdia Net
APN: Phone
MMS protocol (if applicable): WAP 2.0
MCC: (don't change this number)
MNC: (don't change this number)
APN type: default, admin, hipri (notice there is no space on either side of the commas)
APN protocol (if applicable): IPv4
everything else: <Not set>
Press Menu>>Save. You will now be back at the initial APN screen.
Step 3. Create another APN (Menu>>New APN). Everything is case sensitive and must be entered exactly as below. This will be your 2nd APN:
Name: MMS
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Username: [email protected]
Password: CINGULAR1
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MMS protocol (if applicable): WAP 2.0
MCC: (don't change this number)
MNC: (don't change this number)
APN type: mms, supl (notice there is no space on either side of the comma)
APN protocol: IPv4
APN protocol (if applicable): IPv4
everything else: <Not set>
Press Menu>>Save.
You will now be back at the initial APN screen again. Make sure the 1st APN (named MEdia Net) is selected (via the round radio button on the right side). Your data connection will drop for several seconds and then come back.
We're done. If something went wrong and you need to revert back to your default APN config, from the APN selection screen just press menu and select "Reset to default". Or worst case scenario, simply restore your nandroid backup.
Proceed to TESTING section below.
PROCEDURE FOR ROMS WITH A SINGLE LOCKED APN:
If your APN is locked (it shows the lock symbol and you cannot change the settings), then we're just going to add a second one.
From the APN screen, press Menu>>New APN. Here are the settings for your 2nd APN. Everything is case sensitive and must be entered exactly as below.
Name: Media Net or Media Net 2 (if your 1st locked APN is named Media Net, then just name this one Media Net 2 - the name in this field isn't important; it just needs to be unique)
APN: Phone
MMS protocol: WAP 2.0 (this option might not be in your APN, so don't worry if you don't see it)
MCC: xxx (Don't change this number)
MNC: xxx (Don't change this number)
APN type: default, admin, hipri (notice there are no spaces between the words and the commas)
APN protocol (if applicable): IPv4
Everything else: <Not set>
Once you have the above settings entered, press menu and save. You will exit back out to the APN selection screen. Now you need to select the little round button for the new APN (Media Net/Phone) that you just created. Your phone's data connection will drop for several seconds as it switches to the new APN, and then come back. If you find that your connection doesn't "stick" on the 2nd APN (i.e. the selection button keeps reverting back to the 1st APN) then reboot your phone and try selecting the 2nd APN again. It is mandatory that the 2nd APN is selected to receive the speed benefit.
We're done. If something went wrong and you need to revert back to your default APN config, from the APN selection screen just press menu and select "Reset to default". Or worst case scenario, simply restore your nandroid backup.
Proceed to TESTING section immediately below.
TESTING
If you're in one of the markets that benefits from the 2nd APN, you will see an increase in download and upload speeds in a speed testing app. Also, uploads will not pause and stutter nearly as much anymore. If for some reason you notice your speeds are slower, this is likely due to the normal wide variance in AT&T network speeds, so keep testing. This APN fix is not known to slow down your speeds; they will either be the same or faster. If your average speeds are roughly the same, then your market is one of those that doesn't benefit from the dual APN configuration. For testing your speeds, I recommend the free Speedtest.net app (found in the Market). It allows you to choose from a wide variety of server locations to test against. Be sure to run multiple speed tests from different locations to different servers at different times of the day before jumping to any conclusions. With my phone sitting in the exact same spot I've seen speeds vary from 500k to 5MB/s in a 10 minute period, so keep in mind there can be a wide variance in AT&T network speeds and cellular conditions can change frequently and rapidly.
At this point, there are a few build.prop settings that might enhance your speeds even more, but that is beyond the scope of this thread.
Good luck and let us know your results. If you have any problems, post a message in this thread and I'll try to help you.
I'll give it a try. worth a shot.

Absolutely. My goal was specifically to get CM7's cell data speeds as fast as the stock ROM. This fix also worked for me in CoreDroid as well.
For some reason this didn't work for me. Swapping the telephone db caused the phone to fc. Even after restoring the original file the fc persisted. I had to flash my backup. I didn't change the build prop settings.

I just wiped and reflashed with CM7-stable, used the Root Explorer method and all is good...got a big time increase in download speeds, no FC's. So it's looking like this fix will not work for everyone. I searched the entire xda forum, and there's not much discussion of people messing around with different copies of the telephony.db file, so we are definitely treading on new ground here.

Just curious, are you seeing an increase in cell data speeds?
Regarding the FC's, I'm wondering if for some people the file permission needs to be reset once it is copied.

A bit new to the Android dev community but quickly becoming a big fan of it. Rooted my 2nd Android phone ever just this past weekend without much trouble at all. Again thanks to the fantastic dev community.
I even managed to pull off what you described here in your post...yes yes...even adb is sort of new to me.
But alas, it worked! My data speeds are noticeably faster now Running on Android Revolution HD 4.0 by the way.
Not sure if this is a ROM problem or something else. Every time I run google maps or speedtest it breaks my mobile data connection. I have to toggle mobile network off/on to get it to work again. Running Virtuous Unity 1.27.0; it happened with 1.26.0 too. Is this possibly a hardware problem? Or a ROM problem? Not sure... Has anyone had this happen?

Yeah, it kills mine, but it won't come back on until I manually turn it off and back on. The H icon still show up but no activity on the arrows
I'm now experiencing this too. In my case I have the RCMix V2.0 ROM. It happens with both the stock updated OTA radio and the radio/ril combo that is recommended for this ROM. It seems to only happen when the GPS is active. In other words if I use say Google maps with GPS, press Home and then run an internet app I have connection. But if I leave a GPS app (Co-Pilot Live for example) in the background with the GPS active, internet is down. Just like you I show the "H" symbol just no arrows for data. If anyone else has an insight please shout...
Ok, don't ask me why but I found the solution. It's simply having multiple APN's. I had originally created a second APN as per the instructions in someone else's thread to get higher data speeds. Well, after a search on the internet yielded this idea I copied the MMS settings from the original APN to my new one, deleted the old one and Voila, GPS and data now live happily together. Weird...

So, I'm flashing a bunch of different apps trying to figure this thing out. I loaded the latest MIUIJB and still my mobile data was jumping in and out, quickly.
In the APN settings, I noticed my "Type" was different than the above. My "Type" just said "default, supl, mms" When I added "admin, dun, hipri" it connected. Maybe coincidence? Dunno. Now I'm flashing back to Bruce's CM10 (9/28). Will check then...hopefully it'll be the fix for my specific situation (yes, I'm dreaming...).
UPDATE: Installed Bruce's CM10 (9/28) and mobile data is still working...APN "type" is listed as "default, supl, mms" only.

It's probably a coincidence.
I will tell you that I've had the data problem with the Type set at default, supl, admin, hipri, mms
The only thing different in this version is adding 'dun'. I just did that too for kicks because I'm curious about any possible fix. But I'd bet that it's either just a coincidence that the data just started working for you after that or what really fixed it was that you messed with the APN settings at all which forced the connection with the tower to reset. I've had that same issue where I've messed with APN settings and data mysteriously started working again too.
But keep testing data for 10-14 days and see if you get the instability again. I will too. If we don't then the 'dun' setting is the key.
I don't think we'll find that's the ultimate sollution thought.

My data was working perfectly fine when I re-flashed 9/28 (and it only had "default, supl, mms") but then I got greedy and flashed 10/1. Data is back on the fritz...

My data wasn't broken at the time I added the 'dun'. So I have no idea if it helped or not. I try to save these 'fixes' until my data breaks to see if any show immediate results but I didn't this time.
Flashing the new build has triggered the break fro me in the past, but it comes back within a few hours.
What shouldn't happen when you flash an update (if you don't do a full wipe) is changes to your APN settings. Whatever changes you made on 9/28 should still be there on 10/1

Bad timing for me to test this stuff...going out of town tomorrow and will definitely need mobile data this week. Senseless Revolution, here I come.

I keep a nandroid backup of Hyper NonSense ready to be restored on my SD Card for emergancies.
It won't have my latest text messages or anything but I can flash to it and have working mobile data in 3 minutes in an emergancy. And it only costs me 1GB of SD card space.
If you take the time to set that up once, you don't have to worry about flashing a fresh install of a Sense ROM and setting up your accounts and apps later.
Ok, for those of us that have problems connecting to non-mobile websites, this solution worked for me. I've tried so many combinations- all resulted in internet working, but no MMS. I need MMS!!!
I was also up all night with AT&T regarding this issue (still pending). So after a couple hours, multiple tries, I hung up, they said they'll call me back after they find a solution. Whatever! It was 3:30am, I was trying different combinations until I passed out. I woke up and it was working!!! Powered off & on a few times. Still working. Applied the same settings on the wife's Skyrocket and now it's all working.
Name: attwap (name it whatever you want)
APN: wap.cingular
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Menu> Save. BackButton. Select the APN you created (green dot). BackButton. Done.
Noobs - To get to APN settings: Menu> Settings> Wireless and network> Mobile Networks> Access Point Names. Menu> New APN.
I dont know if "wap.cingular" is faster than "phone" (other APN), or vice versa. I tried speedtest on both, same ballpark in my area. The point is that the internet and MMS is working. I will "settle" for this until AT&T fixes this problem. LTE not yet available in my area. They said the PTA network is brand new and they're still working out the kinks.
Hope this works for you, too.
Works great man, I spent a lot of time on this last night couldn't get both internet and mms to work.
Ditto, I ended up going back to pta because I couldn't get MMS to work on anything else.
I'm glad it worked for you guys too. I was a bit annoyed switching back and forth whenever I had to send an MMS. The trouble was my wife couldnt- didnt know how. Now life is good... for now...
Well LTE is suppose to roll out to NY in the near future so hopefully we only have to use this work around for a bit more.
APN Differences?
Thanks Mike-
Works great! Data is constant now throughout all the sites I visit, no data loss. Also MMS works! And through speedtest app my DL is very close to the other APNS here in my non-LTE market in Harrisburg, PA.
Can somebody explain or point me in the direction of the differences between the APNS: pta, phone, and wap cingular?

looks as though you can't even use the phone apn along with the those mms setting in the same profile anyway.
Worked for me also.
Seems to work for me too. I don't know much but, all this cingular stuff wouldn't suggest we are using a different network would it? And we get a bill for roaming or something lol
Cingular is AT&T.
Oh that's right lol I forgot
Got up this morning and no data. Had to restart the phone. apn still set with new settings.

After restart, did the data come back on? No problems here. Both phones working fine.
Yeah the data came back on but it just stopped working during the night for some reason

Dont think it's an APN issue. "wap.cingular" is widely used. Maybe the phone just needed a restart. I treat my phone like my computer, leave it on all day, but reboot it every once in a while... and of course, back that thing up. (I dont mean the song)
is this supposed to fix the network issue well when loading non-mlbile sites? i tested my rocket with a friend that has the htc vivid and i was completely humiliated because his thing is blazing fast.
I changed my settings and still don't have mms plleeeeasse help

No, not fix. Its just a work around to get your internet working with MMS still active. Not supposed to make things faster, better or orgasmic... just working.

You've been told many times on the forum, RESET DEFAULT APNS. And then one of them will be simple, and just check that one.
Settings
I tried it didnt work for me maybe my settings are wrong i will try again
You was right
sorry on the hellfire 1.2 it would not work for me i am using aokp now and it worked thank you for your time
Simple Mobile APN Configuration on the G2x
This goes out to all my broke peoples out there! Keep yo heads up, Fam, and we gonna get through these tough times together!
NOTE: This guide is for ICS-based ROMS, such as Hellfire Sandwich. This is the most highly recommended ROM for G2x right now ... according to ME!
After much trial and error--having just been forced to involuntarily abandon T-Mo US for Simple Mobile last week due to lack of having paper--the following procedure worked for me. Don't listen to NOBODY ELSE, other instructions DO NOT WORK, I know I tried them all! Especially don't go by the guide on Simple's website, they ain't got a ****in clue what they talking about either! Anyway, I hope it might help other people with the same problem.
If you currently don't see any APNs under System Settings > Wireless & Networks > More... > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names, good! Do the following procedure.
If you've already been pranking around with the APNs trying to get them to work, delete all your APNs under System Settings > Wireless & Networks > More... > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names, reboot your phone and then do the following procedure.
You must not be connected to Wi-Fi when you go through these steps.
From the APNs screen, press the Menu Button. Tap Reset to Default. Wait as much as 5-10 minutes and let the thing do its work. You should now see 2 APNs: Simple and T-Mobile US.
Now you have two APNs there, but neither of them will actually work ... yet. They're generic and now we'll need to do some tweaking.
Counter-intuitively, we're gonna ignore the APN called Simple and work with the one titled T-Mobile US. You'll understand why in a minute, trust me.
Press the Menu Button.
Tap System Settings.
Under Wireless & Networks, tap More...
Tap Mobile Networks.
Check that "Data Roaming" and "Use Only 2G Networks" are both unchecked.
Tap Access Point Names.
If you did the Reset to Default routine above, tap T-Mobile US.
Here are the settings (be careful they are case sensitive and don't put stray spaces in there or you'll be pulling out your hair wondering why it won't work, trust me on that!):
Name: Don't change, leave it as "T-Mobile US". I don't know why but the G2x seems to like it better that way.
APN: simple
proxy: 216.155.165.050
Port: 8080
Username: Don't change, leave T-Mo US setting (whatever that is) intact.
Password: Don't change, leave T-Mo US setting (whatever that is) intact.
Server: Don't change, leave T-Mo US setting (whatever that is) intact.
MMSC: http://smpl.mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MMSProxy:[empty]
MMS Port: [empty]
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
APN Type: default,supl,mms
APN protocol: IPv4
Once you finish filling all this in, press the Menu Button.
Tap Save.
This will take you back to the APNs screen.
Now tap the other APN, Simple.
When it opens up, tap the Menu Button.
Tap Delete APN.
You are done. Watch the Signal Strength indicator in the Notifications Bar. It may take a minute, but it should now turn Blue, you should get 5 bars, and your should see a tiny H appear next to it.
You're now good to go, but you can optionally reboot if you feel like it and then check if your APN is still there. If it ain't, program it again and use APNsBU or APN Manager Pro from the Market/Google Play Store to backup your APN settings for easy restoral just in case they keep vanishing.
Good luck!
Hit the "Thanks!" Button below if this helped you.

If you're on Simple Mobile it lets you use the web and mms (Multimedia Messaging Service, or "picture messaging"). If you're on T-Mo or another network, it will stop you from using the web and mms.
You say you're a n00b, don't worry my man, we all were once upon a time.... Stick around here and you won't be for long!
Check out this here link, it might help you understand this APNs subject matter: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Access_Point_Name
Good luck.
trust me, ive been a n00b in a lot of places, it will come off soon
but as for the APN, when put a new rom on i get simple and tmobile and it defaults to tmobile and i can browse the web and send mms messages
MMS Still don't work
I'm on EB ICS 4.0.4 Build3. I was having problems with apns just disappearing. I did everything as had been described earlier and my internet started working. Though apn still sometimes disappears I just hard reboot the phone and it comes back. One problem though MMS is still not working, it just keeps saying sending and never goes through. Will see, maybe there is an answer somewhere out there.
Okay so I followed the above instructions but the T-Mobile APN's are locked, there is T-Mobile Data and T-Mobile MMS - HTC Sensation 4G

im not 100% sure but it may be different on your HTC, this is the forum for the LG G2x, you might want to try asking in the HTC forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1110
also this is for ICS roms, are you running an ICS rom? are you rooted? or have a custom rom installed?

ICS APN Setting Simple Mobile Working
I Know The Answer But I Need Ten Post To Post Outside Links Meaning I Can't Put The Apns.. =(. But Go On Youtube This User Named muzzzmaggg Has The Video Showing You. The Name Of His Video Is How to setup APN/mobile internet and MMS on SIMPLE Mobile for HTC. It Works For Any ICS ROM. Check It Out And Follow Step By Step And Where The APN Says Not Set Make Sure It Says Not Set Instead Of None. If All Goes Well You Should Have Simple Mobile Running On Your ICS ROM. It Has Worked On 5 Devices So I Know It Works On ICS 4.0.3 And 4.04 Etc..
