Best gingerbread ROM? - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hey XDA!
I need some advice, I've been searching through peoples ROMS with Gingerbread.
Quite frankly. I don't know which ROM is best for the galaxy s 4g. As of now.
I heard KF2 Is more improved than KF1. But does anyone have a specific they use? Like A KF2 GB Rom with Root possibly? Even though I don't even know what I would do with the Root. Ideas are appreciated

KF2 is good for someone which doesn't look for a lot of performance, but likes to stay 'up to date' with the most current s/w.
If you're a performance junkie, stay away from gingerbread and go with KD1, or Froyo.
Aside from that, if this question is about either KF1 or KF2, go with KF2. I personally, along with other members have seen a few bugs fixed in KF2.

I see your point. What I'm looking for is like Very fast performance, not much lag, very small bugs in the rom and like no problems with the APPS that come with it, because when I updated to KF1 gingerbread (not on this forum) i had a problem with the call log, like it wouldn't record my stuff. and then today I reflashed to Krylons KC1 Froyo Stock+Root, and everything on it is good. no problems with any of the preinstalled apps, or call logs or phone or anything of that matter, it was a clean rom that I enjoy, but I would like to update my ROM if anyone has a better one with some of the preferences I mentioned above.

Gingerbread has fixed call logs, and I haven't had any problems with the apps. No bugs so far for me, tbh.
For totally lag free performance I'd stick with KD1 and either flash the ICBINB ROM, which has all the performance tweaks compiled for you, or flash them all on your own.

[Q] Leaked 2.2 or Syndicate?

Hey guys, first post on the forums. I've been reading them now for a few months, at least with android development, and I've really been liking all the knowledge that's here.
So, I've been looking at the Syndicate ROM (with all the goodies), which looks pretty freaking awesome, but right when I was going to flash it, I saw the leaked 2.2; which, I flashed immediately. I've been greatly enjoying all the little changes here and there, not to mention the simple fact that the community has brought us Froyo. Now, I tried reading around a bit to see what my best option is, but I'm just not sure which I should go with. I like a lot of the features each has to offer. I'm sure I could just go flash Syndicate and try it, but I hate reflashing my phone constantly back and forth. Anybody experienced with both care to shed some light on the subject? The help is to be greatly appreciated.
I should also note that I do enjoy testing software and helping report any bugs I come across, to help development progress easier.

This might belong in general. They are both great roms but if you are looking fo instant gratification and stability go with syndicate rom. The froyo beta still has a few bugs that need to be ironed out as it not official yet, try it if ur feeling dangerous but if you just want a fast stable rom id wait a little while before flashing it

Syndicate/Epic Experience. I played with 2.2 for a few days, but Syndicate/Epic experience is a much more stable package with better features than 2.2 offers us now. Its also a lot snappier and more pleasant to use.
Great question and definently needs its own thread lol,but I would go with syndicate cuz 2.2 is not stable enough yet,im runnin syndicate and lovin it-its best rom to date, only thing that could be better is syndicate 2.2.

^ This.
Wow, so far I've had zero problems with stability or bugs. Keep in mind though, I've been playing with it for about two days so far.
It really sounds like I should give Syndicate a shot, with how highly people talk of it. Backup, wipe, and flash, here I come. (And hopefully I decide to do it tomorrow and not after I get home from a party tonight.) Thanks for the input guys. I'm sure I'll post my opinion of the two compared in a few days for anyone who might have the same question in the future.
Yeah I tried the 2.2, but just didn't like it as much as the Syndicate with xtreme 1.6 and the custom theme. Plus, it didn't seem as fast and actually scored lower on the Quadrant and the same on Linpack. Soooo... yeah stuck with the awesomeness that is Syndicate.
I can tell u 2.2 leak isn't as bad as much ppl .said....so far I haven't had any fc or buggss....so I only see a lil bit lag in the browser but that's because flash.....but believed me I won't go back to 2.1 just cuz I really like 2.2 (but that's my opinion)
send it from the Galaxy System Core ....dont mess with it

I'm working with the Syndicate rom At this time and loving it along with the Extreme Kennel. Just think what it'll be like when Syndicate is based on the actual stable Froyo release. Dude, I cannot wait to see what that's gonna be like.
Does Froyo come with the newest Touchwiz to get the newest Samsung widgets?
I had syndicate rom. It was a very smooth and fast rom, but the battery life did not seem to work for me. Apparently the cooker of the syndicate rom thinks my phone is the problem.

I'll go with this recomendation also. I was really excited when I heard Froyo leaked out and it was ready for us to test! But with that being said, like noobnl said, DJ29 is very buggy and Syndicate ROM is so well put together, it's just hard to pass up. So I'd go with Syndicate too. Thats what I'm running now til Ofgficial Froyo comes out...
P.S. I "heard" Froyo will be comming to us within the next week or two...
Yeah baked snack is purrin. I like'em both and I'd like to see a stable " baked syndicate". Baked kernel.....syndicate rom. Yeah, that would be something.

How about 2.2 from syndicate? hhhmmm
I've not had any major issues with the froyo rom but I'm gonna go back to the syndicate rom. Just too many annoyances with the beta. It's good enough for a daily use rom though.

Unless you use GPS on a daily basis

rooted and unlocked my 2.1 android, now what?

What ROM should I get to increase the phones overall performance and responsiveness? I just want something that is very stable and something that will improve my phone in a good way.
Every single rom is gonna be a million times better than stock eclair...for your first time I would stick with a froyo rom as those are easier to flash. Just pick one
oh man.. where to start. Honestly it varies so much from user to user. Your best bet is to hop on some of the threads and read some of the comments.. first few pages and the last few.. try to get an idea of how well the ROM is working for users and battery life. There are a plethora of 2.2.1 ROMs with excellent battery life. The gingerbread ROMs are coming around to having decent to good battery life. But again, it all varies from user to user.
Good 2.2 or 2.2.1 ROMs
Serendipity, Paragon, Phoenix, Ultimate and theres more of coarse, these were among my top choices.
A lot of the gingerbread ROMs can be found in the first page of development.
But please use the search function. There has been multiple threads started with the same question.. about the same topic.
Once you go serendepity, you can't go back. but seriously I tried a lot of roms and serendipity is BY FAR the best!

I tried serendipity and its a great rom but I like a side scrolling app drawer as opposed to the cube effect. I use apex 5.3 (froyo 2.2.1) not to be confused with apex 6.x( gingerbread) because its simply works. The five dock bottom is great and battery life is amazing. And the jk4 modem actually gets me much better reception than the stock kb1. but if you like the stock feel cognition is the way to go
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
I flashed Serendipity 6.4. So far the first thing that I noticed is that the apps are organized scrolling down, not side to side which is the one thing that I do not liked very much. everything else seems to be very good.
Toad858, which version and where did you the 5.3?
also what kernel do I need?

If you'd like to use your original TouchWiz side-scrolling app drawer, give Cognition a try instead. Cognition is best-known as the 2.2 ROM that tries to stay as close as possible to the original, with a ton of under-the-hood features and fixes (like lagfix), minus the bloatware.
(I can't stand TouchWiz, but still love Cog's stability, so I use Launcher Pro (with its vertical app drawer) instead)
cognition rom is my favorite rom when it comes to stability. and its smooth as ever now.
I think I will stick to serendipity. Now I am trying to figure out what modems do and if I need one to be able to use a kernel? I was looking at Onix Kernel and it says "Since based on i9000 sources, use an i9000 modem". I am not sure what a modem is first of all.

technically, as long as everything works for you as of right now - you're done. You can sit back and enjoy the rom. If you feel ambitious, you can try a different kernel. I dont know what serendipity uses but I found the Onix kernel to be one of the smoothest froyo kernel, available. Thats, of course, my opinion though.

That's what's packaged in the rom. You don't NEED that modem specifically or need to change ... Unless you're cell signal sucks then check out the modem sticky at the top of the dev section. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876391 You do need an I9000 modem because the kernel in serendipity is based off I9000 sources.
What you NEED to do is stop right now. Enjoy your phone and READ everything you can. Once you feel comfortable with flashing and knowing how to get yourself out of bad situations, flash away. No one can tell you which rom is best for you. You're more than welcome to narrow your choice to a few, then try them out or try them all. The key is knowing how to do it and the things that can happen.
You may also benefit from THIS new thread
Apex 5.3, as most other roms do, comes with a great kernel and modem so you dont have to worry about it. I cant link the thread right now but you can search for it under development

WiFi calling Volume is very low

Im using drhonks KG4 2.3.4 on my SGS4G and for some reason the tmobile wifi calling app volume is very low. Meaning, I cannot hear the other person, although they can hear me very well. Anyone else have this issue? I searched around xda but couldnt come up with anything conclusive.
I know that there were some that experienced issues with the Bali kernels wifi calling.

Thanks but no thanks. KG4 is very stable and works best. I tried KH2 and KG6 as well among a myriad of others Including Bali which bricks my phone. KG4 provides the most stability and best benchmarks for me.
I dont know how using a stable kernel for my device makes me a noob but to each his own.
Also since you are going to call people noobs for using Kg4, you should change your sig file. It still says you use KG4. I wouldn't want you to be associated with the plebs.
EDIT: KH2 does not fix this problem. thought you should be aware of that as well.

Benchmarks should be about the same for all of them. For some reason, Samsung Adrenaline Shot v6 isn't giving us the proper scores for Quadrant on the KH2 kernel. The smoothness of the phone and the tests run Quadrant are very similar to the KG4 kernel. AnTuTu gives a similar, if not, better score.
Bali kernel would obviously soft-brick your phone. It's a kernel meant for Froyo, not GB.
As for your WiFi volume, that's normal on all GB ROMs. There has been no fix for that yet.
Honestly, using any build on this phone is fine, except for KF1 and KF2. You would be crazy to use those, lol.

BTW, it says I use the kg4 kernel. The hacked voodoo one. NOT KG4. I use audiophile.
Considering that we all have the exact same phone, I find it *very* hard to believe you're getting better performance and stability out of KG4 than KH2. I just made the move to KH2, and I've noticed several subtle yet substantial improvements over KG4 -- including wifi calling volume. The *ONLY* instance where I have a problem with wifi calling is in a situation that will never arise for me in real life:
When wifi calling is on *and* you're paired to a BlueTooth headset or handsfree kit, the other party hears an echo of their own voice *when you call them*. Incoming calls don't suffer from this affliction, and calls in both directions are just fine if you're not paired to a BT audio device.
I guess it's also worth mentioning that I avoid "deodexed" roms/releases like the plague, and the KH2 I'm running is the raw leak that krylon360 got his hands on. I really don't know if that could or would make a difference in the wifi calling issue, but I know for certain that I've run into less problems and quirks on odexed roms and releases than I have on deodexed ones (not to mention there are GOOD reasons for odexing (that far outweigh the primary reason for deodexing, which is themes), but that's not for this thread).
As far as the condescending attitudes of some of the people here, I say just shrug it off. When someone's a **** to you, take a few minutes to look through their posts and topics, and often, you'll find they're a condescending **** to most people, not just you. I usually only read 4 or 5 words into airfluip1's posts, and often, that's 3 or 4 words too far.
Oh, and airfluip1: Why do 'noobs' insist on running kg4 kernels on their kh2 roms when drhonk released a kh2 kernel for it?
P.S. -- If you can recover from it, it's *not* bricked. Flashing a froyo kernel over a gb rom will definitely send you into a bootloop, but that's not a brick. A brick implies just that: your phone is now dead and useless, you may as well slap some mortar on it and use it to fill a hole somewhere in your house.
hello all,

A simple question about wifi.

Hi everyone, i'm glad to see we are on official gingerbread now.
I wanted to know if anyone will be working on a cwm package (or something) to make previous GB roms have the wifi strength of froyo?
-I want to emphasize that i'm not asking for an eta. More so if this is possible and something that I just need to wait to be released.
-I'm running icbinb ki3 tweaked exactly how i like it with battery how i like it. I'd rather not flash stock 2.3.6 unless that's the only way to improve my wifi. If I only have to wait for a package that will improve it on ki3, then id rather do that.
So thanks for reading, dont flame if you can help it.

The short answer from me is that I don't know. I wish I had more insight into what changed between Froyo & GB to cause the wifi to weaken. Could be as simple as drivers, could be that's how they're saving power, etc. I know flashing the KJ6 modem file caused people to have a big of an improvement with wifi though not the same level of performance with Froyo. I also read a lot of people had issues sending big SMS messages with KJ6, so that might be something to be wary about.
Anyway, you could flash the KJ6 modem file to see if it helps. As for something to get it back on par with Froyo, I'll have to leave that to the experts around here.

To be honest, noone really knows exactly what the problem is.
But if you want to add the wifi properties of KJ6 to any ROM, which are way stronger than any previous GB build, you can refer to my thread in the development section. The mod I posted gives you the wifi of KJ6 without the modem. (Im currently using this mod with KI3 and my wifi is pretty darn good ATM ;p)
Look in dev section... possible fix posted earlier

[Q] - Development or Stock?

Just curious others opinion on this. I thought once gingerbread source was available that things may pick up some in the form of development.
Looking in the development section, I did not even notice a real ROM that was (a) on the official GB now and (b) had some tweaks done to it.
I'm trying very hard not to be a debbie downer... but what are you guys running? Old GB leak roms like Valhalla, or just plain stock rooted ROMs?
For the stability (even though I still get freezeups when I use anything gps-related: google maps, etc) I'm using the official KJ6 debloated with the KJ1 kernel. It's worked alright, though I miss my EDT tweaks and crt on and off.
Keep in mind the massive lack of devs and that a good working build takes time.
Running KJ6 with honks KJ1 kernel. Missing Valhalla a lot though. Have managed to get the 9 toggles and clock / battery EDT Tweaks working smoothly on KJ6 but still messing to get the lockscreens and power menu to work without FC's. Would love to see a valhalla with voodoo KJ6, but I know Whitehawkx will get to it when he's ready and in the meantime it's forcing me to get educated and figure some of it out myself.
yeah its a shame i hear you there no really well developed roms on this forum i miss the support the vibrant had :'(
I'm running octane, still using ki3 (it works best for me) I stole the wifi files from kj6 and noticed some improvement
