Hey guys,
Rooted my phone within the first week. Basically i'd like to customize individual things such as the boot animation, how certain things look etc. but i'm not really quite sure how to do this? I used to be really into the psp scene and everything was a lot easier to mess around with there (just flash0 haha)
Basically i'm looking for some kind of direction of how i can do this?
Theme and app section of forum but here is a link to some that flash in recovery. [BOOT ANIMATION] Flashable boot animations. - xda-developers http://bit.ly/npcV00
i've looked through the theme and app section, seems really unorganized haha, the only thing of worth i've seen was the transpart sms.apk, but i'm not quite sure where to install and all that stuff.
Edit:
just flashed the cyan boot over, pretty cool.

Here's what I ahve so far. Pretty much everything's customed from the boot screen to the boot animation, to the theme, and even the icon. I even edit apps to match my color scheme.
Here's a video of what I've got so far, and I've attached some thumbs as well:
My question is, what do you guys think that I could do to make it look even better? There are some really creative minds here (seeing what you guys have been doing was what inspired me to root my phone and start doing this to begin with), so I'd really like some of your input.
Thanks in advance!
I'm running CM6 with Snap7.6&Turbo and just trying to spice things up a bit. I just don't know where to start. I have been reading through this forum trying to figure out how to apply customizations that are CM6-compatible but just don't feel like I've found the right direction yet. I was looking through some of the screens on the "Post your screens" thread and some of those look pretty cool!
I'm trying to gain a sense of knowledge so that I can start making my own cool screens! Thanks for you help!
You know you can customize it alot. Look in the cm settings.
Sent from my supersonic yea....
lol
Check out this rom. It flashes over CM6. It's got some nice features already built in.

Get LauncherPro and have at it.
this is fun

this is fun
custom icons, battery and boot animation all in one...

fun with fonts (always a winner)

(you can even add stuff to the zip made from the UOT kitchen. thus making restoration after a wipe or ROM flash even easier. for example, i include my custom font so everything is flashed in one go)
adw.launcher and launcherpro are not so far apart as some claim..unless you need a lot of Sense type widgets. i have tried LP and it's ok, but i prefer adw and keep coming back to it over and over. /shrug

I really like Cyanogen, but this is one of the reasons I am toying with MIUI. For the moment it has great features an awesome sms app. A good bit of eye candy and is quite fast. And its all AOSP. All of this out of the box.
Blasphemy! JK. Bland is such a strong word.
I got bored and thought I would try new app and saw the Absolute System app, it has LOTS of boot animations and will let you edit them to fit your screen and install them right from the app. (Root and S-off required, of course)
It's lots of fun and helps ease the pain of early development.
Check it out... https://market.android.com/details?id=com.canvs2321.absolute.system

That is a fantastic app, and I like it a lot. It's pretty handy for a lot of stuff.
I never did get around to playing with the boot animation part of it, though i've scrolled by it a few times.
The original boot animations are located at:
/system/customize/resource/
Does Absolute system back up the originals, or do you lose them when you start playing with it?
Total file size of all 3 is just under 4 megs, so they're easy to send out if someone ends up needing them.
What kind of artistic talent do you have, can you make your own? (i'm not so gifted in that department...)
I got bored of the android blue gears down animation, I've been browsing the forums for a down animation but nothing seems appealing
any suggestions?
Uh, look again? This is going to be subjective. People are going to suggest things you've already seen and passed up.
I know this is a bit late in the HTC Hero game but I still have mine and I still mess around with it a lot and while it wasnt until recently that I decided to see if I could dig up info on changing the splash screen and found some info and decided that I would create a nice little tool just to make it a bit quicker for me so I thought I would share it.
Huge than you to tehdarkknight for his original tutorial. Without it this would have not been possible.
All I did was simply create a easy to use batch file to make converting the images and automatically renaming them much easier for everyone.
tehdarkknights original HowTo can be found here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7847088
What is a Splashscreen?
The splashscreen is the image that shows up before recovery/your ROM's bootscreen/etc... By default, it is the white screen with green HTC lettering (if you have flashed Sprint's 2.1 release.)
The method used here is for flashing the HERCIMG.zip via the bootloader (HBoot)
All of the instructions are included in the download and its pretty self explanatory.
Hope this is of use and hope it works for you.

Thanks for providing this. I find that bright white HTC screen rather annoying. It would be great to replace it with something far more muted.
By the way, have you ever replaced the boot animation screen that follows? I discovered UOT Kitchen, but I've been a bit leery to try it for fear of wrecking the bootloader and becoming stuck.. I'm on CM 7.2 with TWRP and the last CM ROM supported on UOT is 7.1. Plus, it only mentions being compatible with CWM 3. The boot animation doesn't require modifying any APK files, so that's one thing that is less concerning. But... you never know, until you hear about someone having tried it successfully.
Incidentally, I'm finding CM7.2 with TWRP to be a terrific combination. The phone is quite a lot better than it was. I missed having HTC Sense, but Fancy Widgets provides a nearly identical clock/weather widget so the home screen looks good. And of course functionally, you're so much more liberated with CM7. I wish I'd done this over a year ago!

UOT Kitchen won't "wreck your bootloader."
The boot animation is just a zip file in /system/media. It will either work or not. It won't stop anything.
Everybody has used UOT, you're just a litttttle bit late to the game.
Any questions just ask

What he said.
Thanks for the help, guys. Btw ajrty, I saw one of your more recent themes from earlier this year... looks really nice and dimensional. Did you create those icons or find them on-line?
Yeah, I do realize that I'm very late to the party... I missed a lot of the excitement with new ROMs and the tension in the early stages of getting things to work right. But on the flipside, a lot of the work has already been done making it easy for those who show up later. I do have a few questions about UOT Kitchen, as there's not a lot of info provided on the website. I know a series of GIF files wouldn't cause any harm, but I just worried that the other files that direct their usage might not be compatible. It's good to know this isn't the case. In retrospect, it makes sense that Android would be more robust and simply skip any incompatible scripting like that and proceed to normal boot.
Can you use UOT kitchen to generate font updates and various indicator replacements on the Hero with CM 7.2? Do you have to select "Amend scripting" versus "Edify scripting"? Concerning Cyanbread.apk and Androidian.apk, which one is preferable or required to upload so that the theme update works on the Hero? Lastly, is there a particular thread you recommend reading that provides a lot of useful tips and examples on using UOT Kitchen for the Hero?
Switched over to dev-host so should be easier to download for people. Guess Mediafire was requiring people to register to download the files and I know how that can be a pain sometimes just to DL a file.
Updated the download link if anyone want this still.
