My wife has a stock Inspire, not rooted yet. She keeps getting a notification that there is an update available, 1.84.502.11. She currently has 1.80.502.3 (CL318736 whatever that means). If we do the update, will we lose future root capabilities? What does the update expect to improve?

1.84 is rootable. Also, the stock rom is available here abouts, try the dev section. Really, though, just root it now and save yourself some headaches.

I agree, root the phone now and just head to dev thread and find attn1's stock rooted update with updated radio.

2.32.651.2 is available. I got a new hero today and updated OTA to the new software. then I applied this root method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296
ive been deleting much bloat. the update has a new baseband, new software, new PRI. kernel is the same. im sure theres more that i dont know about.
This update makes it feel fast and responsive. To me-a little smoother than the last .7 official.

sorry i can't tell you one or the other; however, i was curious why you're jumping on a hero instead of something like the lg optimus s which is cheaper and has gotten great reviews?
one obvious negative of picking another device is that the community isn't quite there for it yet, but... i know it is rooted at least.
also, if it's a matter of price, two of my brothers ordered their evo's from this site:
http://ordersprint.cellbenefits.com/ind/sprint/devices.html
the prices seem unreal, to be honest. but it might be worth looking at what they have available. much cheaper than direct from sprint and the lg ends up being $50 in your pocket after contract, rebates, and/or giftcards.
anyway, just a thought. i do love my hero, but this late in the game, i'd be looking to snag a slightly more modern device. or, maybe you could find one to buy from people in the forum. i know a lot of people have been upgrading recently (i'm up in a week or so, but plan to wait until after ces before i buy a new phone).
sorry for the off-topic question!

Updated op
Ah.. I see.
Well, thanks for the update. Good to know that root is still available!

i flashed nfinite's .7 update 3.1 odex version after all that. device retained the baseband and pri versions. if i try the ota update to the new software, i get the triangle exclamation point. when i press menu, im at clockworks menu. id like to have the latest software but a new baseband is good too.
Any way to get the update other than OTA?
I'd like to have the new PRL and Baseband as I run CM.
Thanks.

prolly not until someone extracts it. i dont know much about it.
I knew about 2.31.651.7 OTA, but didn't realize there was another. I am still running .6 with an odexed basically stock ROM (see sig).
So, really better performance, or just a bit? Any difference on mflops, or other specifics?

I have finished rooting the new update and I can say that the SuperOneClick method works as well. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Rom Manager went on fine too.
Edit: My bad, I lost root after booting. I will try your root method. Sorry
Getting the S-off again is now trickier due to the new radio baseband.
why not pull the update off your phone change the script a little sign and flash through recovery
so the new update is worth keeping? I was planning on rooting my device to get the wifi sharing option that 2.2 has but i wasn't thinking and let the new ota update go through the other day. the only difference i've seen is more lag and more battery usage. opinions?
The only way to get WiFi sharing on the hero is through rooting the hero does have a native usb tether but u have to pay for any data u use on it

Super one click worked to root the phone after the update to HTC Hero (Sprint) Maintenance Release 2.32.651.2.
Got the download on this site, just search for the super one click method.
Thanks XDA.
So lets see if I get this right;
I'm using cm6 exblue. If I want the new baseland and prl I have to go back to stock sense unroot apply the update and then root again with super1click and flash my cm6 backup. Is that how it goes?

no. you can flash the radio through either s-off bootloader or recovery, and there isn't a new prl. 60671 is still the latest.

It will most likely unroot you, but not remove the ability to regain root. The Nexus does not rely on a security hole to gain root. If they were to lock the bootloader on a Nexus, I'm pretty sure they'd have a riot on their hands.

This is my first time doing an update, so this would be new to me. Forgive me for such a dumb question, but I know root can be regain. What about bootloader, can it still be unlocked? And how about flashing roms, kernels and what not?
That's what I'm worried about. I wanna update but I also wanna know 100% if I can easily root after
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
Well Mikey said rooting will be the same, but I'm just worried about flashing roms and kernels. Would that be any difference? Iduno....
Guys... the Evo can't be rooted because it has a SIGNED boot loader... not only because it is locked. The Nexus comes shipped with a locked boot loader, but you can unlock it easily. This update will be the same. Devs should be able to rip apart the update and make a flashable zip for the radio, which will be the biggest change.
^and i CANNOT wait for that! hopefully, and im sure i wont have to hope too hard, that we can get the other goodies that come with the OTA.
Someone already got the new GRJ90
If I want to get the update, should I wait until a custom ROM based on GRJ90 comes out or unroot my phone and install GRJ22 from Sprint back on my phone?

I myself decided to lock/unroot my phone to its factory state just to be safe. I really want this OTA and I assume that EVERY stock NS4G will get the notification and update with no issue.

I usually just wait for the developers to make a flash zip or incorporate into their rom. It usually doesn't take them very long after the update comes out. They do a pretty amazing job of getting it out to everyone.

I'm pretty sure that you made a mistake unrooting. The chances of you being in the 1st day release batch is very slim. The updated rom will probably be on xda before you actually get it pushed to your phone

You can try, depending on your ROM, but I seriously doubt anything you want to happen will come out of that. You might be stuck in a boot loop, it could brick it, it could just screw up all kinds of stuff. VERY bad idea in general. My advice:
Be patient.
im still running HTC Mecha.. I just used Revolutionary to root.. and still have everything running good on my stock ROM.

Mecha is the HTC codename for the device, much like the EVO 4G is known as the Supersonic and the Incredible S/Incredible2 as the Vivo/Vivow, respectively.
just be patient. Usually a workable, root version will be released shortly before or after the OTA goes live. I would not except an OTA on a rooted phone. just keep an eye out on XDA.
Since you're rooted and stock the best thing to do is to wait until they release a version of it so you can install it via recovery like already mentioned. If you accept an OTA update while rooted bad things will most likely occur.
You will not he able to install an ota if your rooted. This is due to the custom recovery. When the update checks the recovery, it will fail.

Hey Guys
Just rooted my Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE on the Rogers network. Just wondering when the Rogers ICS update comes out tin the new year will this re root my phone?
No one knows. Yet. The oneclicks i have a feeling will not work on 4.0 they dont on 2.3.6 so you may have to wait until 4.0 hits and is posted into a rooted rom. Which im sure will happen within hours of the ota happening

as Silver says, no one can say today if you'll lose current root when ICS rolls out... however, I was rooted on 2.3.5 (with stock 3e recovery) and after I took the ATT OTA 2.3.6 update, I didn't lose root.
Historically however, you would lose the root correct?
Also, if my phone remains rooted after the Rogers update to ICS. Will it function ok on a rooted phone?
Thanks

"Historically" I didnt lose root when I took the ATT OTA 2.3.6 update (when I was on 2.3.5). All my rooted apps worked perfectly after OTA update as I still had superuser permission. Rooting just gives you more permission.
So... I used to be rooted until my old tbolts 4g data bit the dust and I had to get a replacement. I have my new tbolt in my hand as we speak but I'm faces with a dilema. Should I root or wait for stock ics Rom to he released and live with that. I've been waiting a long time for this update as I have had the tbolt for almost 2 years now. What is your guys' opinion on this. I know it would be nice to root and debloat the thing as my battery drains so quickly these days , but maybe with the promise of ics we will see improvements? Also how long before a custom Rom is released when the ota for ics hits our phones?

I'm not sure what future updates have to do with unlocking and rooting your phone. It's such an easy procedure and it helps immensely when debloating and saving battery life.

OTA's are just patches to take you to the next level. RUU's are released at the same time (speaking specifically about ICS here). With S-Off you can do whatever you want as far as installing things. Honestly it's pretty pointless to not S-Off if it's available to your device.
ROOT NOW - and wait for ICS! Seriously, as soon as ICS comes out it will be rooted and posted here. Then you can flash that on top of what you have.
Will the ruu install radios and changes to hboot (if there are changes to hboot)?
RUU's are EVERYTHING. OTA's are just the parts that were updated from the last version. Usually OTA's end up causing little issues here and there. The RUU's do a full install on the phone.
I suppose nobody can knownif it will be possible to go back from rooted ics ruu to rooted gb or even if it will be possible to root s on phones once ics is installed?

If you are S-Off you can go in any direction you want to. S-On could be a problem if they patch our S-Off exploit (which i strongly doubt, but a possibility nonetheless) This is why it's pointless to have a phone without S-Off if it's available.
