[Q] Phone doesn't boot out of box - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently imported a LG Optimus 7 and it finally arrived today. However, the phone doesn't seem to want to boot. The first time I plugged it in, the screen lit up with an LG splash screen, then the screen turned off and turned back on with LG on it. This kept repeating so I pulled the battery, however this time the phone didn't light up when I plugged it in and I couldn't get anything to respond, the power button didn't do anything. So I pulled the battery again. From this point I did several more battery pulls, each time the power button does not do anything, and if I plug the charger in, the screen may or may not turn on and show the LG splash screen.
Is the phone defective or is there something I can do to fix it?

"Is the phone defective" that's funny.

This may be stupid but have you charged it for like an hour at least, then tried? I found out that if the battery drains to zero, you won't be able to boot the phone unless its been charged for like 5 mins minimum.

Try plugging your phone into a wall outlet.

Phone Freezes While Charging

I had my phone freeze when charging, the screen would be of, when i would hit the power button the phone would not wake up, I would have to take the battery out to turn it back on, Any one else experiencing this? Its happen 3x to me already
I guess i am one of the lucky people i have yet to have any problems other then alittle bit of lcd bleeding. My phone is running great. I would tell you to keep an eye one it. If you bring it into a store will they need exchange it for u unless the problem is going on right the store. It could also just be something with android as well.
Probably bad grounding circuitry in the charger or phone.

I have had it happen twice, and once I found my phone stuck in boot loop forcing me to do a hard reset.
Just happened to me. Never happened to my G1 while charging in the same place

Its happened a total of 8 times for me (My 3rd day with the phone). First time I was late to work because the alarm didn't go off.
Always when I charge via a wall charger. Have tried the LG charger with LG usb cable, oem usb cable, blackberry charger. They all freeze my phone. I've noticed that every time it happens, my phone gets real hot, often times when i get a text in while its plugged in it freezes. The only way I can charge the phone without it freezing was through a usb port on my computer. Don't know if its an issue with the charger or the phone, but this is annoying
O and I've looked at the LG O2X forums too, it seems like they are having the same issues too, freezes and bleeds
It's happening to my "replacement" g2x. I have to pull out the battery to get it working again.

Could be a combined hardware/software problem with battery charging, which also explains the poor battery life many experience.
When charging via wall adapter I wouldnt doubt if it is going into thermal shutdown and the battery is getting too hot, pushing too many amps too quickly....usb connected to your computer fixes that issue since it cannot push that much current.
Sounding more and more like LG did something bad here.
I have never had this happen.
I use the included charger, a nook charger, and the charger for the HD7.
All have worked perfectly fine. I would definitely keep an eye on your heat.
I've had at least six reboots and a few of the black screen shutdowns where the battery has to be pulled.

Yea I think it really is heat related. Using battery monitor widget, I found that the last few times my phone froze up while charging, the temp was hovering above 35 celsius, seen it hit 39.8

Those temps aren't bad. I have seen up to 45c while charging and using wifi tether and I haven't got a force reset.

I had this exact issue; plugged in, got a text and it froze, requiring a battery pull. I also noticed it got really hot. Interestingly, I had received a bunch of texts prior just fine while plugged in. The last text I received was repeated three or four times and then I got a notification about what appears to be the SMS app hanging (I forget the exact package name but I know it had SMS or MMS in it).
I have had my g2x for about 3 days and this problem has occurred on mine about 3 times so far.
The first time it happened i pressed power button several times, also tried holding it down. After about a min of messing with it. i actually got the screen to light up with the lock screen by holding down power button and up volume. but once i let go of buttons screen blanked out again. i was unable to reproduce it again. so i pulled the battery.
Having the same issue here. I'm on my second G2x (exchanged the first one because of lcd bleeding). Had the phone for 2 days, and I've had 2 freezes with blank screen and one reboot while charging thus far.
Interestingly, both times I encountered the phone freeze with blank screen were when I've completely discharged the battery and the phone was off when I plugged in the charger. After I plugged in the charger, i turned on the phone, and about 20-30 minutes later, i'd get the blank screen phone freeze.
The other time my phone rebooted while charging was when I plugged in the charger with the phone at around 75% battery.
I think it's because of crappy charger or cable. I don't have difficalities at home with the original ones but in the office the touchscreen of my Motorolla Photon freezes.
Its the kernel. My Transformer will do the same thing on certain kernels. I haven't had it once while on MIUI and Faux, and I went through 2 phones.

Motorola XT 720 Start up problems

Why won't my XT720 start up?
When it is connected to my charger, the four action keys light up. Despite leaving it to charge overnight, it appears that the battery isn't charging. The phone won't start while it is charging, neither when connected to the mains or to my car power supply.
I bought a new battery without any improvement.
When I access the bootloader screen it says there is too little power in the battery to program the phone.
The phone is not recognised by my computer when connected.
The phone is running Froyo 2.2. with Dexter rom.
I would be very grateful for any suggestions......apart from binning the phone!
Thanks!
I think the phone likes to selfboot with too little charge. See if you can shut it down cleanly so it won't autoboot. It's annoying but you may have to watch it very carefully to catch it when it's trying to boot because it will drain itself back to death very quickly.

Hi Oakham, do you have any update to your case? I have the same problem now.
Yesterday, I noticed the battery bar went down to orange region (about 30%?). I plugged it to the wall for about an hour (the charging symbol showed up). Later I found out that the battery bar did not move (still stuck at orange region). Later the night, I tried to charge again (the bar was red at about 15% or less). The charging symbol showed up. Later I checked, the battery bar did not improve but declined. The phone eventually went out of battery and turned itself off.
I tried to continue to charge using both the wall outlet and PC USB. No luck. I could not even power up the phone now. Did you manage to resolve your case? Anyone got the same problem and found the solution?
I thought about buying a new battery to try, but then I saw your post, so I hesitated.
Thanks.

I've had this problem. Watching the phone closely while charging and pulling the battery whenever it starts to boot works. After about the fourth time doing this I got a battery charger from amazon for ~$5 because it's gently loving annoying.

Thanks for your advice.
So when you first bumped into this problem, how did you get it back to boot up?
I followed your advice to watch it while it's charging. When I saw the motorola logo showed up, I pulled the battery. Then I plugged it back and let it charged for some more time. Then I tried to power up the phone. The motorola logo came on and then the big battery symbol came on saying it's 100% full (but i knew it's not). Later, those 4 soft touch button lid on. This cycle repeated. And I'm clueless.
Please let me know the steps you took to recover your phone.
Thanks.

Once you get into the system use 'power off' from the menu. It won't autoboot then and you can leave it in the wall overnight. I think. A voodoo doll may work, too. It can be really frustrating, but I've been able to get out of it every time so far. Like I said, I got sick of this game and found a battery charger for pretty cheap.

Try deleting batterystats.bin and doing what M said.. can you get to open recovery and charge from there?
I also had the 'M' logo screen, stuck on-screen when the charger was connected. There is a post which suggests, for this, 'Pull battery.2) Insert battery and hit power button;3) As soon as you hit the power button, hold the volume up button down until the unboxing logo comes up.'
As my phone is still under warranty, I sent it back to see if there is a physical problem. I'll try the above suggested solution when my phone comes back from 'Motorola', whether or not it is repaired by them! I've also bought a battery charger for the phone's BP6X battery from e-Bay (£9.50, including another battery.)At least I will then know that a battery is fully charged before I try fixes.
Thanks for the other posts/replies!

In my experience OR drains faster than it can charge.

Damn!
I had about the same. Battery got drained down from 80% to 5%. Then the screen for "please plug in for charging" appeared. Some moments later the phone went dark and now I can't get it to work again. It doesn't react on the power button. Even when plugged in the charging-symbol doesn't appear. I can't turn it on. Sucks!
Any ideas?
My phone has been repaired by Motorola, under warranty, and returned after four days. Accompanying report is brief: 'Software update and screening'. Seems to be working fine.......just like a brand new phone!
This morning i find myself in the same situation. My phone have the soft keys iluminated but it didint work.OMG... what happend durring the night. So i tried to boot the phone but nothing happend, and after reading tje post on the problem i have tried to remove the battery and put`it back, tryed anothe reboot, and holdind the buttons power+vol up. Nothing worked. But when i have tried the combination power + vol up + cammera shutter and plugged the cable. at first nothing happend. but after i have relesed the buttons the logo apeared and started charging. after that i powerd on my phone normaly
My phone does that everytime it charging and I remove the plug when it's in sleep mode. I have to remove the battery and it's power on normally.

[Q] RIP to my Sidekick

So today, as i was on my way to work I accidentally held down the lockscreen button and the power menu popped up (I was on Glorious Overdoes V2) in the middle of a text and i pressed reboot accidentally... My phone never rebooted... It was stuck on the black Sidekick 4G/T-Mobile screen and then it would go black, then once again that screen would pop up... I removed the battery and put it back in, and without me pressing any buttons the same screen came back up... I let it sit for a while and after 20minutes nothing changed except the phone got really hot. Luckily I had my OLD Nokia in my car and popped my SIM card in it so that i could continue having a phone. I let The Sidekick sit for 4hours and it was extremely hot and then eventually it just turned off completely (Im assuming the battery drained, it was at 90% 4 hours before.) I got home, plugged it in and it wouldn't even turn on the charging screen. Somebody told me that my Motherboard is fried but I don't know. I called T-mobile and they're going to send me a new phone since it's still in the 1-year warranty period.
Anyone know if they're going to be able to inspect my old device and find out if i rooted/flashed it? because i can't get into it or anything to ODIN
I feel like they will try putting a new battery in it, and if it still wont turn on you should be fine.
It got hot because the CPU was churning over something and couldn't enter a low power state. I bet you could coax the phone into download mode and reflash it.
what do you mean coax the phone into download mode? by using the button combo to get it into download mode when turning on? I've tried that and it doesn't work. I tried rebooting into recovery and that wont work either. Also, it wont charge the battery anymore...
I've always had a hard time getting into download mode, and my phone works fine. I just spent 5 minutes trying different combinations until I got it.
I've heard people say trackpad-power button, volume down-home-power button, volume up/down-put battery in-plug in USB, etc etc etc. But the only method that works for me is to put in the battery, plug in the USB, wait for the charging screen, then hold volume down-trackpad-power, releasing power as soon as the screen goes black
You say your phone is turning on as soon as the battery is inserted? What if you have it plugged into USB first?
I had the exact same problem, I sent it into samsung and they just replaced a part(never told me which one) and it was fixed. I did noticed that when the sccreen was poped open to show the keyboard, it would stop. But it's probably a loose cable like I've read before.

Worst case scenario if you can't figure it out here on XDA, you could always sell it on eBay for parts as defective.

Moto G doesn't charge or power up

I'm sorry if this topic has been discussed so many times, but I couldn't find symptoms like the ones my Moto G has.
Two weeks ago, my Moto G reached out to 0% and shuted down. After that I've tried the following possible fixes:
Leave the phone out a day off the charger and then charging it for 3-4 hours or even all night long.
Pressing the power button for several minutes while connected to the wall charger.
Connecting it to several chargers (750, 1500 and 2000 mah).
Taking out the battery cover, disconnecting the battery flex and then reconnecting it.
A few things I noticed were that my phone came with a 450 mah charger in the box, and when I connect the phone, the LED light lits continuosly and it never goes off.
When I tried with 1500 and 2000 mah chargers, the LED lits too, and while pressing the power button, the LED light flashes one time after 2-3 minutes, and then flashes again after 5-6 minutes. But these flashes are very glimmer. And no matter what I do, the screen never lights up, and the LED light never goes off.
Please, I desperately need your help. I bought this phone two months ago and I've unlocked the bootloader, so I don't think warranty will cover the phone.
Thank you very much.
if you press power + vol down does the phone goes to recovery? i figured out that even if the phone does not boot you can go to recovery (or is it bootloader?) and than go to barcodes and press vol up. some codes will show up. after a min or so it will turn off. repeat this until the phone wont even boot to recovery. now plug it in the charger and hold power button for 2-3min and than leave it charging for an hour and than try to power it up. if it will not work try to unplug it and plug it in again after a minute and than hold the power button again for 2-3min and leave it charging for an hour again. i got my moto g booted after few tryes.
it seems that moto g wont charge until the battery is completely drained.
I'm sorry but the phone won't boot into bootloader mode neither. Are there any other recommendations? Thanks for your reply.
EDIT: I'll see if I can record a video of the phone's behavior. Maybe it could help.

Answer.....I have exact similar problem for last one week and i figured it out how to recover..u have to leave the phone for 24 hours to discharge and then open the battery...See youtube tutorial how to open it....
then go to any local mobile repairing shop and ask him to charge or boost your battery..they have some kind of boost machine..ask them to do it for 10 min the put on the battery and hold the power button led will blink 3 times put the phone in charge i guarantee you u ll get ur moto g back....i have also sucessfully removed the outer glass from digitizer,,...but that another story...hope i helped you...
I recently ran into this... I let my XT1032 battery deplete to 0% and then had a difficult time getting it to recharge.
When the phone was plugged in to any of these:
- my desktop PC
- powered USB hub
- game console USB port
it powered on briefly and showed the white screen with 0% battery indicator. The screen would then go blank and then after a few minutes the phone would boot successfully to my lock screen. However, it seemed to stop taking charge at this point and after a few minutes would shut itself down again. And the cycle would repeat.
I was able to get it to boot to the bootloader through normal means (Vol. Down + Power). But it behaved similarly in that it seemed to stop taking a charge and so after a few minutes it would power down as the battery ran out. And the cycle would repeat.
What finally worked for me was to use a different charger (and cable). I ended up using the charger that came with my tablet (Nexus 7) and the phone charged up the battery without issue -- I'm not sure whether the charging cable made a difference.
There's some discussion here:
http://androidforums.com/threads/moto-g-died-and-now-wont-charge.837568/
that suggests that when the phone hits 0% battery, it becomes fussy about the charger and that a high charging current is required or else the charging circuit shuts down.
My experience would support that theory. Seems a rather dumb design on Motorola's part...
Lesson here is to not let your device run down to 0%!

Nexus 5 boot looping after complete discharge

UK Nexus 5, recently OTA'd to 4.4.3, totally stock.
Forgot to put the phone on charge last night, found it dead this morning. Put it on charge for a bit, had to take it off charge to use it only for it to die shortly later. Plugged a usb cable in to charge, phone would loop and not boot properly. It would get to either the Google logo or the Nexus animation. Held vol- and the power button but couldn;t select 'Power Off' in time from the boot menu as it would just reboot itself.
Got home this evening, plugged in the proper charger. It looped for a while, but now I've got it to boot where I could choose to Power Off. It's now on charge where it started booting/looping again once, but is now sat charging properly. I'm not sure if all this weirdness is caused by the battery being drained completely. I'm suspicious of the power button. I banged the phone around the button in case it was stuck and blew around the edges just before it started stopping looping.
Any insight welcome.
Thanks

Thanks[/QUOTE]it's not the power button. I have had this happen to, I thought it was a bug in TWRP, it usually only happens when the battery is low, or wait a minute no it doesn't happen when the battery is low for me it happens when the phone gets warm because I've been flashing something over and over in TWRP.usually I leave it in TWRP for a little bit then when I hit power of it actually stays off as long as I'm not charging it. I am dictating this using voice to text hence the mistakes and forgiveness backspace delete backspace

Something I actually learned from paintball, a low battery makes technology go nuts. My Nexus 5 bootlooped with a low battery. It also said it stopped charging and basically acted like an overdramatic child with no cookies. After an hour on charge everything was good to go.
