[Q] wireless tether - HTC Sensation

just wondering but can this phone enable wireless tethering aka hotspot without having the hotspot plan? i have a mytouch 4g and i use wireless tethering a lot. i dont have the tethering plan but it still works. im hoping this phone can do the same because if it does im def going to get one.

Yes

Yep, there's an app for it preinstalled. I've used it briefly with no problems.

I think I read elsewhere that they can detect it if you use the built in hotspot app, can somebody with first hand experience confirm/deny?

im in australia and these phones have not even been spoken about as a release date... with my carrier im actually locked into a 'iphone plan' ie. the ones where they try to rip you off to unlock tethering, etc... i use wired and wireless tether all the time and it works PERFECT... actually im very stoked how it works!

Wifi Tethering and Mobile Hotspot Confusion

Heres what I understand:
$30 Unlimited Data plan to the phone (as usual)
Optional $20 Wifi Tethering with 2GB cap (through Verizon App?)
When 2.2 comes out, will the built in Android Wifi hotspot be removed? Or will it work without the $20 wifi plan?
They have to disable it. Otherwise, who in their right mind is going to pay for something when there's software already on the phone that allows you to do it?
I guess I'll just be sticking to PdaNet. Nice try though, VZW.
Yeah, darn. Hopefully the geniuses here can find some way to reenable built in wifi tethering so that vzw cant tell that its being tethered. I want wifi on my ipad
does this mean there is a high chance this phone will be un-rootable? because of http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
2.2 source code may be released to the carriers but they can change it however they want to fit thier hardware and needs.
So if they want to take out the free wifi hotspot capabilities in 2.2 for the X or other devices and still charge for wifi hotspot capabilities with 2gb caps for 20 bux then guess what, they can.
PDAbnet may do wifi tethering but that is different from wifi hotspotting to multiple devices
remember that once rooted you can flash different roms and install any apps to your hearts content

This doesn't really have any bearing on whether the phone will be unrootable - IMO every phone is rootable, it is just a matter of finding an exploit... Hopefully this phone will be easier than the last one I had (Droid ERIS :-/)
This is not correct. The Milestone has been rooted but no access to the bootloader has been had meaning no custom Tom's.

Here is a few things to keep in mind..
The Verizon 3G app is infrastructure, thus it works with things like PSP and Nintendo DS, which is why i keep it. The Wireless tether apps are only ad-hoc for now.
From what ive been told, the verizon app loads a different firmware before running.
Now, what verizon can do and has done in the past, especially on windows mobile phones, is take out a feature like wifi hotspot in an OS, and put their own in its place.
do NOT be surprised if VZW does the same thing with 2.2 and yes, it is 20 a month for a measly 2gb on the hot spot app, but wireless tether is unlimited for 30
this is why i ONLY use the hot app for PSP and DS and the rest wi-t for root
not to mention, i am not even sure if the 2.2 is ad-hoc or infrastructure.. anyone know?
This is how the USB Tethering works for Verizon's 2.2 FroYo build, and I'll safely assume that it'll be the same for WiFi:
When you connect via USB Tethering, the phone directs you to a Verizon webpage (https://dunsp.vzw.com/selfProvisioning/SelfProvisioningServlet) which informs you of the package costs, and gives the phone number to add the package.
Interestingly enough, this only occurs if you tether it's 3G connection and not it's WiFi connection.
You may wonder why you'd want to tether a phone's WiFi connection via USB.. well.. personally I just pay for the Boingo mobile hotspot ($7.99/mo), which will work on my iPad or Droid, and if I need to use my PC, I tether my Droid's WiFi to my laptop. Saves $9.99/mo.

[Q] Mytouch4g non ad-hoc wifi tether?

So, i recently bought a Mytouch4g after coming from a G1. I know all about the wifi tether app and its ad-hoc network. The Mytouch4g comes with wireless hotspot capabilities, but unfortunately tmobile wants to charge you 15$ a month for its use.
Does anyone know a workaround? I really bought this phone in hopes of being able to use it as an access point, but then found out that they charge for the service which is a real let down. I really cant afford the extra money every month right now but my phone is my primary source of internet at home.
I figure everyone knows the mytouch4g is capable of an AP network, so im hoping someone can help me out/point me in the right direction.
Anyone find a solution to this issue, im on the same boat.
Um, the wifi hotspot feature doesn't cost extra. Just the tethering.

[Q] 3g modual

can a 3g modual be used on the g tab. if so which ones work thanks all for help
How about...?
Hopefully this isn't too off-topic but why don't you just use the 3G connection from your phone (I assume you have an android phone)? That is what a lot of folks with the gTab do now.
I have a rooted Droid X phone that I've installed Wireless Tether on and since I have an unlimited data account with Verizon I turn my phone into a 3G hotspot and connect my gTab to it to surf when I'm out and about. This works great for me since I always have my phone with me.
Anyway, hopefully this info helps as I do not know of a way to add a 3G module to the gTab. Some folks have been discussing using a 3G or 4G usb dongle modem but I don't think they've been able to get that to work yet.
Good luck,
Steve

Absolutely agree!
I was in the quest of finding 3G module for my tab, preferably GSM, not CDMA (Werizon).
Later on I started counting and something dawned on me....LOL
If I install that module on G-Tab.... I have to pay for the access...
Since I already paying for my phone data plan, it would be a double whammy..
I have HD2 running WinMo 6.5 and WMWiFiRouter, which is the great program to tether to G-Tab.
Hope it helps.

USB Tethering

Hey guys,
I am from the Captivate forums and I was wondering if the roms for the droid charge have usb tethering and mobile hotpsot enabled out of the box with the current custom roms. I know Verizon is providing their mobile hotspot capabilities for a short term but I would really like to get some tethered 4G speeds without having to pay for separate hotspot capabilities.
I'm running GummyCharged 1.8.1 with the pbj lagfix kernel, and while there is not exactly a built in tethering app I was able to easily install PdaNet for usb tethering. I also downloaded Open Garden WiFi for my mobile hotspot alternative app which seems to work well. Verizon's built in tethering garbage is just plain ridiculously overpriced.

You thinking about jumping from att to verizon for the LTE lock in? That's exactly what I'm planning on doing either today or tomorrow. Don't you just love how easy it is to usb or wireless tether with our Captivates and custom roms?!
To USB tether, you can purchase EZ Tether (~ $10USD), or you can root and run this free app: Google Code Wired Tether
For Wireless Tethering, it's a little trickier - mostly because of the Wifi Access Point / Ad Hoc connection issue. I have heard that if you download this free app: Google Code Wifi Tether, and configure for the Samsung Fascinate, it will work fine. Haven't tested it yet, though.
Cheers,

Yeah that is exactly what I feel like doing, but I will probably keep my Captivate activated just in case because I still have AT&ts unlimited data plan. Yeah that is the reason I was asking becasue everything is baked into our custom roms and they inlcude all of the mods anyone could ever ask for.
I would never pay a seperate fee for wireless tethering to any wireless carrier especially if I already am paying for the data plan. Wireless providers are just too greedy at times *cough*tiered data plans*cough*
Thanks for the responses guys. I hope the custom roms on this phone one day are up to par with what I have come to expect from the Captivate forums.
Also I read that Verizon has been cracking down on wireless accounts that use third party tethering apps. Can anyone confirm this or point me to a reliable source?

Hey, if you get a chance, can you shoot me a PM. I got a couple questions for you and I think I can't send PMs or something.
everything is about to change. On July 7th est, there is be tiered data plans for verizon. 2gb for 29.99, 5 gb for 50 and 10 gb 80. So if your not already on the unlimited than you will not have unlimited more. sucky
Is there a fix to get android-wired-tether working on the charge?

I am running GummyCharged 1.8.1. I installed the wired_tether_1_4.apk, ran it, accepted root permission, but got the "Unsupported Kernel" popup. The adp-1_6-kernel-update_usbtether_r3.zip will not install as clockwork states it is outdated.
Is there a fix to get android-wired-tether working on the charge? I know pdanet/easytether/klink work, but are paid apps.
Thanks
@mrxhack - You are correct. I forgot that the SamChg won't run on the Google Code Wired Tether app. I like EasyTether, though - It works great, and doesn't cost too much. Try the free version first, to see if it works well with GC.

WiFi Tethering & PS3

Ok so ive searched countless threads trying to solve my problem but i cant seem to find any solutions. Im trying to wifi tether my g2x to my ps3 (not using windows) however i know that the ps3 cant pick up ad-hoc networks. Ive read that the wifi tether needs to be in an infrastructure mode or something like this. Ive tried using the wifi tether app v3.1 beta 11 and it works to wifi tether to my laptop and ipod touch but not to my ps3. Was anyone else able to accomplish what i am trying to do?
Additional Info:
Rom: CM9 ics beta
Kernel: faux123's ics beta kernel 0.49
thanks
So I'm guessing no one with a g2x has tried this???

It will work for cm7. Don't know about cm9.
theres a built in wifi tether in cm9?

Yes, if you can't find it then you aren't looking hard enough. I'm actually USB tethered right now and that's in the same place (as usual) as WiFi tethering.
I've got a question, does T-Mo charge for me using the phone's build in tethering ability? I know that 3rd party apps have found ways around it if they do because I've been using a 3rd party app for tethering and have gotten no complaints from T-Mo, using the built in one would be much nicer though.
As far as I know, regardless of plan, no, they don't. I'm currently on a contracted 2GB/month plan and I don't get charged, that's one of the ways they get away with the song and dance of "unlimited" data.
Edit: for the sake of explanation, I don't know about Pay as You Go plans, so hence the "as far as I know"

Sweet I'm on the same plan.
Tethering uses your regular data. No they won't/can't charge extra for you to use the data you paid for.
The tethering counts towards your "limit" so be cautious.
I really do wish some people would look around and try things on their phone before asking questions.
Even a simple "cm7 wifi tether" in Google would come up with results...

What that gave me was the Wifi Tether app I was using, I was afraid that even from using the phones wifi tether that T-Mo would detect it and charge me as other companies charge for tethering.
I would assume hotspot is the same?

Weird.. well cm7 comes with it's own wifi tethering. It's in wireless settings. Give it a try, should work. Never tried on cm9 and not running it either.
T-Mobile doesn't do that. They might ask you to pay for it but it doesn't apply because cm7 has it built in. I think T-Mobile has an app you download for wifi tethering?

I figured it out, it comes on the phone stock and if you use it with the stock ROM t-mo has it set up to use their tethering APN which they make you pay for, CM roms and other Wifi Tethering apps use your default Data apn, thus T-mo only.detects it as data usage.
It's what I used to do when I had an iPhone w/ AT&T, just changed the tethering APN to the data APN and BAM undetectable.

When I use foxfi it brings up the same exact symbol in the notification bar as when I turn on the wifi hotspot in the phone settings. Doesn't that mean t-mobile can see that you are tethering? I just want to do it so they won't make me buy a tether plan.
