Hi all.
I have recently had to hard reset my phone. Prior to that when I clicked on a location from a calendar event, it would trigger Google Maps and Navigation automatically.
Since the reset now when I try the same thing, it triggers the HTC Locations navigation instead.
IMO Google Maps and Navigation is better and I prefer it if only for the turn by turn and voice instructions.
Can anyone advise on the best way - without rooting my phone - to set Google Maps and Navigation to be the default for navigation call across my phone?
I have already tried to "Clear Defaults" but the option is greyed out for all the Locations apps and Google Maps too.
My phone is a vanilla HTC ROM without any modifications. I was able to use Google Maps as the default before the hard reset.
Please note I don't want to root my phone, nor do I want to use HTC Locations.
Thanks in advance
Same issue here, any thoughts anyone?
The only way I could fix that was when I had a custom rom (root access) and I deleted the apk's for locations, then google maps was the default.
Now I am without root on the HTC Sensation, I cant do that.
I am just about to call HTC and ask them how to make google maps the default.
If every one who does not like it calls them and complains, I am sure they will give you the option...
Warmly, Marty
Check settings then location and that is it. Integrate Google nav to locations.
Hi. I'm new here.
I have similar issue. I want to change HTC Locations to Google Maps. I have checked this option "Integrate Google navigation to locations" in options, but here is the deal. I wanna my phone to search my location with GPS and Google Maps. HTC Locations (with requested network connection) is pretty inaccurate. Is there any possibility to change that?

it wont let me do that! it says "no default set"
I've been reading on the web about this extremely frustrating issue. There is, for the time being, no solution because HTC is forcing its users to use its software vs the default android one.
I've been using calendar pad pro and my idea was to contact calendar software makers to include in their options the possibility to choose whether to use google maps or another routing software.
I do hope that someone can come up with a solution or a workaround for this issue, especially I don't wanna root my phone at the moment as I am quite satisfied with its stability.

This is just a way to intercept HTC Location, so there is no icon in apps.
Got it. It works excellently and solves the problem

Hi all,
Christmas is upon us (love and peace for all)
Since I will be travelling, I was wondering if it is possible to turn off all datatransfers while roaming except for whatsapp (dataroaming is expensive, but still cheaper than sending smsses to my friends who have an international)
I'm currently using cyanogenmod 7 on an htc vision.
I am aware that I can deactivate the data while not needing it, but then when I turn it back on everything starts syncing which slows that "quick" lookup down.
Or if I suspend the sync for facebook, google accounts etc, I'm afraid that whatever apps I have which have network access (eg news) still will be running in the background.
Many thanks for the brainstorm!

Hello, Supermooshman... you can also choose droidwall...i am new here so cnt post link but search for droidwall and select the first link and that what you go go for...
It has an option of white and black list... means allow/block all or just certain apps.. so you call configure it to allow only one app and block all other.. and its free ... solution provided
if you want certain apps to transfer data then use juicedefender and block the traffic for the apps that you dont want to use data

CyanogenMod 7 has a feature that could help you. Go to "Settings/CyanogenMod settings/Application" and make sure Permission management is checked.
Now you can revoke android.permission.INTERNET under "Settings/Applications/Manage applications" from all apps except whatsapp.

Solution provided indeed! Thanks
It's a proves to be a better solution than juicedefender (used in the past and made my phone less stable than francium) and less ticking off than using the cyanogenmod way
Cheers!
I recently installed a new ROM on my Sensation that updated it to Sense 3.5 and then discovered that my phone now tries to force me to use their locations app for maps and navigation instead of Google maps (very uncool HTC!).
If anyone else has this problem you can use this great app to fix it.
Search Android market for: "Select Other Map for HTC"
(Would have posted a direct link but the forum wouldn't let me.)
Used that for a while. Another option is to freeze/uninstall Locations via titanium backup.

+1 this does work. I also freeze all of the location widgets
Also it is the location services program that you want to freeze
Google think that almost every device running android, is their device. Therefore they implemented a service within Google Play Services that will connect your device often to the Google and it will drain more battery then needed.
NOTE:
I tried a method that was shown on i think this forum or another one. I can't remember which one it was, and i cant find the thread either.
So before i am going to start this, i wanna thank the guy from the original thread for this, even if i dont know where i can find you. I am only sharing this so i take NO CREDITS.
I repeat, i am ONLY sharing this.
+ Works with:
- AOSP roms
- TW roms
- Well, basicly all android running devices :fingers-crossed:
To start with:
- Turn of location settings
- Go to settings, accounts and go to your google account.
+ go to advertisements and untick the toggle that says that Google takes care of your advertisements.
Most important:
- Download Adaway (latest) from HERE.
Thank you @mrRobinson for this awesome app!
- Open adAway and provide Adaway root access.
- Press the menu button and go to your own custom list.
- Now add a line by pressing the + button in the upper right of the screen.
- Add the following line < mtalk.google.com >
- Make sure the the checkmark is ON with the "mtalk.google.com" line.
- Now go back to the homescreen of adAway, apply the patch.
Note: According to the maker of the original thread, this seems to be the server that your device is always trying to communicate with. So by blacklisting this URL, there is no connection anymore.
Note 2: Cyanogenmod (and maybe other AOSP or GE users) are experiencing that the Blue highlighted WI-FI icon and the blue highlighted antenna icon are now GREY after applying this.
This is because you are not connected anymore to the google servers.
Note 3: Keep in mind that you can still manual synchronise your calander, contacts, Gmail, and other Google account related.

This (syncing) only applies for manual updates. Leaving the entry in Adaway will disable auto-updates. Not a viable option for me, am not going to manually refresh Google apps...

Thanks for this.
I don't think Ad away works as it should though.
It says its syncing and merging with my current hosts file but after doing that my hosts file goes from 1.4mb to 700kb. So all its doing is deleting stuff. Weird

I always delete GooglePlayServices and never have any problems with apps updating.
I still get notifications in my status bar telling me when there is an app update available in the Play Store and also still get my Gmail notifications in my status bar.
Syncing works perfectly and so does Maps, Google Search, YouTube etc.
I actually can't see ANY reason to have GooglePlayServices installed.
All my Google apps still function perfectly without it.
And I no longer have RAM wasted and battery used up by this annoying app!!
My advice to everyone, delete it, it's not needed at all.

Was pretty euphoric when I read this so immediately disabled Play Services and rebooted like a happy little kid
That level of joy didn't last long:
Maps, Calendar, Keep, Youtube, these all need G.P.S. to function properly. Maybe even more apps but this is where I stopped.
Needless to say turned it back on again. This, as well, is not a viable option for me

That's odd, I don't get Google Maps requesting Play services on my device.
I do get one of those notifications after wiping cache and dalvik cache though, I just swipe it away and carry on as normal.
After you swiped them away can you still use the apps requesting it?
For example when I first boot up YouTube after wiping cache it says it needs PlayServices to run but I just ignore and cancel it.
I have never lost any YouTube functionality at all.

Some yes, some no. Keep refused to work. Anyway, can easily make it through the end of the day anyway and will always charge at night so no biggie but all small bits can help of course. This fix is a bit too coarse, for me that is of course
Greetings.
as you know, even if we disable "android device manager" from settings->security->device administrators, it still can be enabled from https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager "enable lock & erase"
from one side it is good, but from other side it is bad - i don't want that my phone can be remotely erased by google
this functionality definitely resides in gmscore.apk
of course, we can just kill all google services, but we loose too much.
so : probably someone from devs here already know answer what to patch in gmscore to disable this behavior ?
with latest gmscore update ( 6.1.74 (1511752-038) ) the only message i can see, when pushing "enable lock and erase" :

I can't seem to find that service, heck I can't even find gmscore.apk
When I use find / -name gmscore.apk in terminal nothing came up.

I would really not want my device wiped If my google account was compromised (really only have it for android)
as i remember, this service because build into gmscore from 4.4.4 and enabling downloading some external application.
can be wrong, though.
damn it google!
This is really frustrating. I can't find a way to disable it and I can't find 'com.google.android.gms.mdm.services.GcmReceiverService'.
This a serious security flaw, let me explain why.... I have a company account on my phone, just for the purpose of receiving gmail, and that's very important to me. This also means this account can access my phone through android device manager. So, anyone that can log in to firm's gmail can lock and erase my phone and there's no way to disable it. Best I could do was turn off location reporting and hide my phone from showing in device list. However, anyone that can log in to this account, can also change this in settings and unhide it, enable lock and erase, make it ring and.... well, lock and erase it.
This is very worrying when you have a lot of people with access to gmail account that you also have on your phone. ATM only solution I see is to remove account on my phone and search for other email app.
Anyone knows how one could deal with this and still use gmail app?

Instead of a problem with ADM, this sounds like a massive security issue on your company's side. I don't know why your company need to share the same email account, but the more people who have access, the more likely someone will spill the beans. If I am you, getting my phone wiped will the least of my worries.

This dosent appear to be working, as after I disable all the above services, clicked on "enable lock and erase" from my google account it reactivated said services. So which service is activating and overriding the services I disabled?
Im running Android 4.4.2(goldeneye rom, Googymax kernal) on a Samsung i9505, I use Xprivacy, Android firewall, and Appmaster(app uninstaller & autostart manager)
Trying to secure an oem samsung Rom from google and its services while still using all the factory apps is going to be like herding cats...
It's similar to going to the pool and expecting to swim but not getting wet.
If you use Google apps and use the accounts feature of Android then you are going to have Google play services and other Google services running, and sadly you can stop them all you want they update and restart themselves regularly.
You just can't get away from Google, if you still use Google play, the Google mail app, Google voice search, Google account verifier, Google download manager, Google hangouts, Google plus or the host of other Google services and apps that a baked into your rom.
All you will do in find yourself with a lot of force closes from apps, and less hair more cats.
What @Cyclu said was the right way. there are several services and receivers that have "mdm" , probably what you could do is use the search function in the app while viewing the services for GooglePlayServices. at the top of the screen, click menu, toggle full, (full/short option) then tap the magnifying glass, then the search box and type "mdm" , then do the same thing under the receivers section
This is so annoying. Can you imagine disabling admin on the phone, knowing that after reading the description in that area of the settings that it cannot be used to wipe the phone? Then someone testing it to prove it and they click "Enable" and wipe the phone? Know how dangerous that is? My phone is an S5 mini, stock firmware and rooted with SuperSU. What can I do to just prevent admin mode being enabled? I want to be able to track my phone's location but I do NOT want my phone able to be remotely wiped by anyone including myself, remotely.
I tried all. Looks like there is no way to disable ADM. Even if u disable corresponding service for ADM still when u restart that service gets re-enables it self again. Had any got a solution to disable this crappy android device manager fully?? thx in advance.
Forgive me, but this thread is just pathetic. If you have Gapps, your device is not yours. It is Google's. Period. If you can't live without hangouts and similar garbage, then enjoy them, but stop *****ing about remote wipe. You can't be half-pregnant. By the way, remote wipe is not the worse thing that could happen to you. Anything could be silently installed on "your" phone, even if you somehow disable ADM. It could be done through Google play and google services framework. Not to mention thar google analytics record everything about your activities and gsf regularly reports the same "home" i.e Google.
To gmail at work guy: if you can't use another client to access your work gmail, get a separate feature phone.

Hi all,
I use Google on Tap alot in my studies in order to translate what's on my screen, including images. I did not use it much in December. However I tried using it today and now I can't access Google on Tap, instead it's completely replaced with "Enable Google Assistant", which I DO NOT want, since it lacks the one feature I use most!
Changing to an unsupported English language region used to stop Google Assistant hijacking the long press home, but now it seems that all of the language regions are supported by Google Assistant now.
Google searches show many results for enabling Google Ass, or outdated methods for disabling it.
Does anyone know another way to disable Google Assistant permanently?
Maybe some modification of the settings in Google menu could do the trick. Did you already tried with a simple method like this one https://www.skyneel.com/disable-google-assistant for example?

I can disable Google Assistant, however, previously it would show Google Now on Tap afterwards. Instead, it is completely replaced by the notification from the screenshot. I can find no other way in the Google settings to change back.
Disabling the feed does not disable Google Ass anymore, so that method no longer works.

Yup, that one. It scans a screenshot for names, locations, potential translations etc.
I read that Google Assistant has a "what's on my screen" button but that doesn't show on my phone, and I generally dislike that Google Assistant insists on mic being enabled. (voice search - not my thing - it's so impolite to talk to your phone when 1) in company or 2) in class.)
