Disclaimer: Each to their own.. blah blah blah.. all personal opinion.. blah blah blah.. if you like what you have.. good for you.. this is not an attack on people who love sense 3.0.. or any developer/fan .... ya, it is understood certain features can be turned on/off... etc etc..
Well, I'm a bit bored..and since I don't have a twitter account.. I feel somewhat stifled about not being able to broadcast my inner most thoughts that the world so desperately has to know about.
Sense 3.0 is kinda lame.. The lockscreen sux big time.. .. the idea of having apps on the lockscreen.. though a novel idea.. doesn't work that well practically.. it's like threading a needle.. it's not quick.. you have to be precise
and boy the carousel animations of the screen!.. what the f*&%$ was HTC thinking? Weather animations are neat.. but a bit slow to access...
All in all.. a total eye candy and distracting design.. with not much practicality to it.
Agree/disagree?
And a battery burner.

It was nice the first time, but quickly got old. CM7 is where its at. Simplicity, AOSP and speed.
Sense 3.0 is not perfect, but it is light years ahead of Samsung's Touchwiz.
I'm not a fan of the carousel effect (I think it just makes things lag), but the lockscreen is AWESOME. You don't have to be precise at all.. I've never had any issues.
The Sense 3.0 lockscreen is actually pretty nice. The carousel is ugly, laggy, and a battery whore at best. I really wish devs would just remove it from their roms.
Sense is like a BBW in the world of android GUIs... I'm a AOSP man myself.
I enjoyed 3.0 for about an hour. Then slapped myself and restored my CM7 backup.
I did like having apps right on the lock screen, so I just set up some new lock screen gestures.
No lag for me I like it +1 on the touch wiz
Sent from my HTC INSPIRE using XDA App
I definitely liked the lockscreen. I keep email/handcent/camera apps here and it was very handy for quickly accessing those programs. Basically saves 2 extra swipes under most scenarios.
Everything else, while visually pleasing, I didnt really care about. I stopped noticing the weather background after the first day, and the homescreen carousel takes a hit on framerate. I like how homescreen switches in Sense2 are buttery smooth.
Other than that, what else did they update? I didnt notice too much. I ended up trading my Sensation for a Thunderbolt on verizon, and like Froyo/Sense2 just the same, if not more.

Yeah, I have to agree. Lots of eye candy but sluggish as sin. I'm not a fan of the sense UI for what its worth.

I put CM 7 on my TB over the week end, and while snappy, is plain as ****, and came off rather quickly, just as before. I love sense widgets and integration. Never been a vanilla fan, to each their own. However, did play with my sister-in-laws Sensation and that thing is snappy as hell. It definitely is so much quicker on Sense 3.0 than the TB. While I thought the TB was perfectly fast on Sense 3.0, you did see the difference. I will stick with sense. Beautiful widgets just doesn't get it done.
While sense 3.0 is pleasing to the eye, and an amazing feat of development to have on our phones, I just don't think at the end of the day that it will run as intended on the Bolt. Some people say that there isn't any lag but I believe its just a matter of what you think lag is. My girlfriend has the Sensation and with my Bolt loaded with sense 3.0 sitting side by side with it, you can certainly see the performance difference. Sure there's no hangups or screen delay, but its certainly operating at what appears to be a lower FPS. In this arena I believe dual-core is king.
I REALLY REALLY like cm7/omfgb but the aosp camera app is so bad i cant stand to use it. I wish we could use the htc camera app in aosp roms and i would be in heaven.
I'm not a big fan of AOSP.. I love Sense.. but NOT the 3.0 sense.. 2.1 with Froyo is unbeatable at the moment for me.
Best thread ever!
Nothing touches cm7 + honeybread IMO
Sense is bloat trash. :-!
I dont really understood the point of putting a CM7 or any ASOP on a non ASOP phone that comes with sense or touch wiz or crappy Blur. Isn't the point of buying those particular phone because of its special features like special skins that offer interesting widgets and apps.
Im not turning down ASOP, i love ASOP, but on my OG Droid or similar type of phone. I bought the thunderbolt for the 4g Sense and was the best phone at the time i bought it.
And yes Sense 3.0 isn't the best ever, but its nice for people who want to open apps without unlocking the phone, just look at everyone using widget locker etc, its a nice feature. Or check the weather on the lock screen. its just little things Sense 3.0 does

You do realize Sense 3.0 was designed for dual-core phones, right?
I love Sense. I've given AOSP a chance, many times in fact. I ran it on the Incredible for a couple of weeks, I just always come back to a Sense ROM. I love a lot of Sense 3.0; the lock screen is great, and the camera with panorama is pretty sweet. I do not like the carousel Rosie, even if it ran super smooth (I'm sure is does fine on the dual core phones) I just don't like the animation. I've ran LauncherPro before and even with all the animations available I like the simple side to side scrolling. When they bring a dual core HTC phone with and unlock bootloader to Verizon I'm sure I will have it, even with the carousel Rosie. Some times you just have to make sacrifices, you know?

What? how? what is the firmware? any bloatware installed on it?
where did you get it.. do you work for them? i dont see it on the website.

to speed up ui. try he stalling fix.. with the symlink.. assuming the root hack works.. keep us informed.
Job Secuirty
For my job sake I'm really care not to give out that info. It has AT&T apps preinstalled but I'm not sure how that would affect the UI performance? All I know is the HTC "seemed" much faster than this device .
Please let us know if anything changes in terms of perkiness.
What aspects of the UI seems slow?
Responsiveness of touch?
Let us know whats going on, there are lots of interested people out here!
atrain, you'll likely have to do the lag fix mentioned above, I was in the same boat, the myTouch Slide felt much snappier until I did the fix on my carrier-branded Galaxy.

guys mind my sudden lost of sanity.
Suppose the firmware revisions are different on those, but guess it doesn't hurt to ask: What's the firmware version on it?
(enter *#1234# in the phone app to find out)
Yes, any more information that you could give about the device w/o compromising your career would be appreciated. As mymansionisabox said, there are tons of people here interested.
To the rest of us: if this guy's legit, & he does indeed have a Captivate in-hand, then we can assume he's an AT&T rep of some sort. If they're giving the handsets out to employees for play-time/testing, release must be pretty close. I do find it odd, however, that he thinks the UI is slow, since the innumerable videos on the web from the 6/29 event didn't show any such lag in the Captivate... The only video that showed any UI lag was the Engadget vid where the person shooting was at a Starbucks & admitted that they were playing w/a pre-production device. All of the videos of the Captivate at the 6/29 event (which came after that Engadget vid) showed no such lag.

But who knows what kind of "improvements" at&t has done to the firmware since showcasing it?
I tried the galaxy s the other day and the UI is indeed slow especially when live wallpapers are active, also got used to the desire's hardware keys which made using the galaxy a bit difficult, also the interface is a bit boring...

Without showing parts of the UI that might disclose your identity... would you be able to make and post a video of the UI and show the issues that you're experiencing? Short of that... as mentioned before... can you tell us the firmware version and if your Captivate is pre-release or if it is the hardware and software that's going to be "officially" released.
Update
I removed the live wall paper and some large widgets and the UI seems better, I think I was just spoiled by how insanely fast the UI is on the HTC aria.
Can you root the Galaxy S without putting a stock firmware on it? I need to leave the AT&T firmware on the device.
Sorry I am noob on android still.
No

OK, srsly? I may have to call b.s. on OP. Sure, Aria's UI is quick/responsive, but I find it hard to believe Captivate's that much slower, no matter what AT&T might've done to it since 6/29.

Okay
The Captivate is awesome once you have a app open like the 720p MKV file I was watching on it earlier, but the UI is sluggish compared to HTC aria.
I came here just looking for tips to improve performance I could care less about "forum glory".
It actually isnt what at&t may have done to the firmware, the galaxy i tried wasnt locked to a carrier, and it was slow, especially when the ocean live wallpaper was active...

Well, since AT&T just officially announced availability in 10days, I guess I'm going to have to reverse my stance.
I still can't comprehend how the UI is slow compared to the Aria, though.
**Edit - Samsung confirmed the date/pricing as well. 10days to go, boyos!
UI
It does seem faster now that I have replaced the stock home screen with LauncherPro Beta. Maybe its just the touchwize homescreen that is slow? Again app performance is fine it was just the homescreen UI.
I finally got the mytouch today and i wasnt sure sure what to expext. But now i know.... this baby is a BEAST. Fastest phone i have ever used. The processor blows away the competition, by far! Internet wise, the 4G yeilds 6.5 mbps up 1.4 down. Also this the first Android phone that has smooth multitouch. Not choppy, and no lag. Also dont let pictures of this phone fool you, it is sleek and sexy. I got the black one. I definitely recommend it if you need a new phone or are thinking about getting one. What do you guys think?

I checked it out in the T-Mobile store this evening. Seemed nice, but the UI really ircked me. It felt laggy and bloated, often lagging between the app drawer and menus. The device has nice hardware, to be sure, but it'll need perma-root to really shine.
I'm trying to decide whether I want to buy a G2 or MT4G, depends which gets full root first, I think. Or if the N2 rumors turn out to be true.
I can confirm the HSPA+ speeds are pretty snappy though. In Phoenix, the '4G' network is live, and I got similar speeds to what you got in the TMO store.
I might have to get one of these to accompany my G2... I like what I am seeing so far

If you try the phone at the store, remember that people have been screwing the demo phones up. The one at the store was so full of junk that it crawled.
The one I bought has been flawless. Even with Sense, and I came from an N1!

I always do factory resets on them.
I've had a G2, wasn't impressed with the weight, hinge or keyboard. Basically it was a fat N1 that felt a bit speedier. In comparison, this MT4G is great, super fast, the HTC keyboard is better than stock and the screen is accurate.
All total I've had a Sprint Hero, EVO, G2, Vibrant, and N1. This MT4G is tops by far.

The MT4G I played with seemed to only have Swype as a virtual keyboard option, which I didn't care for. On my Droid 1, I use the HTC-IME keyboard for those few times I use the on screen keyboard.
You've obviously had more Android phones than me. I'm looking to buy a new phone for myself for Christmas, should have plenty of options, but I don't see Verizon offering me what I want.
Edit - Seems to be plenty of AOSP builds for the MT3G, a good sign once permanent root is achieved.

coming from the vibrant, i love the quickness of the phone along with how sharp it displays text.
S-amoled is great and all, but its pentile arrangement of pixels renders jaggy-looking text.
I like everything about it except for the following:
1. Genius button. Wish it was software mappable. They shouldn't force us to use it. Just give me a regular search button and then make it an option of what it does when you hold down on it.
2. Speaker starts crackling on loud setting.
3. Wish it wasn't locked down so we could get easy root and swap roms. That goes for all the new phones, really.

The HTC ChaCha and the HTC Salsa. Some Facebook-centric phones.
The Sensation in the review is NOT "T-Mobile" branded, but the back cover does have the extra connector missing from the EU-Vodafone Sensation.
Can someone explain why the HTC Sensation is stuttering so much in web browsing, especially with Flash enabled? The GSII just smokes it, is it because of a better browser on the GSII?

The short answer - Yes.
The longer answer - Yes, but...
The browser smoothness in the SGS II comes from Hardware acceleration - the only feature from it I really wished would come to the Sensation as well.
I do hope a software update would fix it, though I'm not sure whether that's possible. It seems that in terms of performance, according to the AnandTech benchmarks (back on topic), the Sensation has failed.
Badly.
And I'm afraid that although clearly the bloated (though lovely) nu-sense isn't helping that much. A Stock-based rom would make it run better, but then you'll obviously lose Sense, and the SGS2 with its Stock ROM would still be faster.
I won't cancel my order though. I still prefer it to the SGS II.

I have read this so many times. Many say GS2 browser and TW has hardware acceleration enabled. But I don't seem to find any "official" confirmation of that nor any proof.
The disadvantage of the Galaxy S2-browser is the checkerboard-pattern displayed when scrolling (very similar to the iPhones browser).
When comparing performance, don't forget that the Sensations much higher resolution will put a higher strain on the phones hardware. But the benefit is obvious - much crisper text, more content displayed on a single screen compared to 800x480 resolution phones.

I'm waiting to get the Sensation as my first Android device (coming from Blackberry), seen the video comparing the "smoothness" of the SGII vs Sensation, and have to ask... what is the big deal here? Excuse my ignorance if I'm missing something. So the SGII will scroll as smooth as your finger across the screen. How often are you reading a web page by continously scrolling, line by line. At least when I read on my BB, even my PC, I'll scroll a whole page down, read the page, and scroll another page.
Only browser test comparison I care about is Dolphin HD on both.

Good selection on your first Android. I'm glad you are getting a flagship. Hate when new Android users pick a garbage device then think Android sucks.
The big deal... to you would be zero. Either phone would blow your socks off. It only matters to those who want that phone that's 2.5% better performing than the second best phone.
If you look at the sunspider and browsermark benchmarks you can see why its not as smooth or fast or whatever.
Nothing to do with SGS2 being anything special.
Something is not right somewhere going by these scores.
Why are people comparing the Sensation 4G to the Galaxy S II?
Who cares?
The Galaxy S II does not exist for the USA, and probably won't ever exist for T-Mobile users.
I love Android Ice Cream Sandwich. I love the fluid user interface, the futuristic Holo theme, the aptly named Roboto font and its swipe-able UI elements among many other qualities. Hell, I love it so much that I’ve even started eating more Ice Cream Sandwiches ever since it was announced. ( just joking )
ICS is a completely new direction for Android, it is its first version that has a coherent design vision behind it, and its Director of User Experience, Matias Duarte has outdone himself. The care and love he has put in while designing it was pretty self-evident, that is, until OEM’s got their slimy hands upon its shiny, beautiful interface. ( yeah, Samsung, i am talking to you )
The crux of the matter is that Samsung just started rolling out its ICS update for its most popular smartphone to date, the Galaxy SII. And it is horrendous. Absolutely horrendous. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with it, except the fact that it looks EXACTLY the same as Gingerbread. Samsung have taken a revolutionary update to the Android operating system and turned it into an iterative one, which is behaviour that I cannot, in good conscience, condone. I am surprised that Google is not yet up in arms against such a base defilement of its beautiful child.

Samsung’s logic states that it does not want to change an interface that millions of its users have now gotten used to, which, superficially, seems pretty sound. But, the problem is that people were expecting ICS to be an absolutely revolutionary change and as Nokia and Symbian have already shown us, companies should not keep sticking to a familiar UI and ebb the tide of progress while the world around them keeps evolving. It is a cut-throat world right now, you either innovate and move forward or stagnate and die.
Which brings us to future innovation from Samsung. The company is about to introduce its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy SIII. The question then arises as to what Samsung shall make of the software atop such a seminal device; will they again cater to legacy users and use the same version of TouchWiz as on the SGS2, or will they completely re-vamp the UI to accompany the new device? As the situation stands, both of the options present potential pitfalls. If they stick to SGS2’s UI, the tech industry at large would be completely disappointed, as Samsung would be the only company to blatantly ignore ICS to such an extent. On the other hand, if they do introduce a new UI, they would be fragmenting their own Android smartphone portfolio.
Samsung has already garnered a reputation for being very flaky with regard to their updates. They decided not to update the Galaxy S to ICS at all and all this further confusion might be a potential nail in Samsung’s coffin for the year 2012. That is just how fast a single bad decision travels among the tech fraternity in these times.
I don’t want to sound like an Apple fanboy, but this is one place where Samsung and the whole Android OEM conglomerate sorely need to learn the ropes from Apple. They update their phones regularly and consistently. You can still pick up the iPhone 3GS, launched 3 years ago and it would still have more or less the same experience as a newly minted iPhone 4S, while in Samsung’s case, every subsequent generation of their flagship ‘S’ line has a monumentally different experience. Come on Sammy, wise up!
The good ole' Galaxy S, is not getting an 'OFFICIAL' ICS upgrade, why? Because according to them, the RAM in phone is not enough to run the touchwiz and the other carrier added crapware, even when the Google Nexus S ca be updated to the latest ICS offering, which essentially have the same hardware.
If you take a look at the homescreen of the S II, one which is still on Gingerbread and the other one which is updated to ICS, you can barely notice any difference between them.
So, in the end, i just want to state that if samsung's gonna include touchwiz n it's next flagship, at least please update the touchwiz so that we can tell any difference between Gingerbread & ICS.
P.S. I want to add a link for a youtube video which shows two S II, kept side-by side, one Gingerbread & one ICS, but the forum rules doesn't allow me to post the link.
I agree, but the reason I don't like TW is not because of fragmentation, but because It's just so extremely ugly. I know this is a personal opinion, but I know many people agree with me and I can't see how Samsung can possibly have missed this and continues to use it.
Also the fact that it is so similar to gb TW is stupid. HTC understood that they had to renew themselves and created a, in my opinion, amazing skin

yeah, they've completely bungled up the ICS update for S II, only because of the ugly touchwiz. i mean just watch the video once, one can hardly tell the difference between gingerbread & ice cream sandwich, if they want to upgrade the software just to make them look-alike then i guess that their next flagship will be just like their previous, at least when it comes to os
The two biggest cons for me are that Samsung updates horribly slow because of it and that it's plain ugly.
Gingerbread, TouchWiz and Sense are closer to the style of iOS, while Ice Cream Sandwich is closer to the modern Windows Phone 7 style.
I like that much more. The only thing that I find better in WP7 than in iOS and Android is the design of the User Interface.
to be honest I am using a port of the HTC One with Sense 4.0 and Htc did nearly the same thing. If you didnt tell me it was ICS I would think it was gingerbread with a new sense clock widget. I am not sure why the OEMs continue to do this. Maybe samsungs or htcs decisions suite some, but when the first thing I need to do with the HTC port is start yanking apks and adding different launchers to convince myself I am running ICS there is an issue
incredible step backwards. total gingerbread sh!t.
ruins the whole essence of ICS if you ask me.
damn you and your Galaxy Value Pack upgrades too!
I dont want to unlock my phone with my face OK?
Guys you have to understand. We are the 1% of their users. And even some of us prefer ugly UI (MIUI). The OEM will always do this. The UI is their branding on a phone. Most normal users like the way it looks. Personally I have not seem a good looking UI from anyone. All 2 tone colors and flat images. Thank god for custom themes. Lol
If you want regular updates then get a Nexus. When it comes to anything other then the nexus, the carriers have all the control over the updates. (At least in the states)
Some people don't know that you can disable defaults on twlauncher and go to stock launcher instead.
I've made simular comments in the past few months after the first leaked images of the Samsung ICS update.
I argued that what we are seeing is a midcycle update and not the rule of thumb for future devices.
Don't get me wrong, this by no means advocates samsungs decision to strip ICS of its looks and feature set. I'm merely able to understand that many millions of people have bought this phone (millions of very ordinary people) and this isn't like an upgrade from froyo to gingerbread where the notification bar gets changed to black. ICS is a different animal all together.
My mother chose her green screen nokia 3210 over a cybershot Sony Ericsson simply because she wasn't keen on the icon style UI. She has never strayed from nokia since even though they now have icons.
Its a fear of losing customers which has lead to such a timid update and samsung as a brand doesn't have the same innovative swagger as HTC let's say. Where as HTC customers are almost expecting HTC to make everything more glossy and spin around like a disco dancer every two weeks in an update.
My GSII is still amazing with gingerbread. I've changed the launcher which I would have done and will do no matter what they did with ICS. Orange UK will release the ICS update in the coming weeks and my expectations are safely low.
I don't believe this will be the case for the GSIII by the way. Plus I also here that samsung may be the first to offer a choice of the new TW ICS (that's not so locked to the gingerbread experience) and Vanilla ICS.
My fingers are crossed and anyway my next upgrade cycle isn't until next year when jellybean will be out and the GSIV or "the New GS" will be in full swing.
Booooom!

ICS status bar battery is green! need I say more?
maybe they honestly tried, but with that touchwiz camoflauge, I have to do a double/triple take to see ICS.
SGS2:
Lol see the problem is, samsung believes in only changing the interface and adding true new features in their next flagship phone, unlike iOS where the new interface changes show up on older models. Samsung i hate you, and not by opinion but because i have the tab 8.9 and captivate and you havent done anything to fix their various bugs etc, so i have to rely on custom romsol
It's embarrassingly bad.

I guess the rational is that too radical a change would upset the uninformed users

ICS not support ad-hoc!!!
using ICS only 1 hour and i flash it back to gingerbread 2.3.6, at least my gb 2.3.6 can connect to ad-hoc network and ics CAN NOT!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24766415
yeah, samsung are just careless when coming to device maintaining, but i don't care as long as there are devs that make ports and roms that i love, and samsung releases sources !!!
I agree, I have not had a stock firmware on any of my android devices for longer than a day or so in years. I guess that is actually a pretty hurtful statement to the OEMs software though

Is this the thing where the wallpaper moves based on how you're holding the phone?
Just get another launcher like nova or something, the parallax effect only works with the touchwiz launcher
Just sold the phone too much iphone copy
Contacted Samsung Support about this. They will forward the request to the developers. If enough people complain and request an option to disable this effect, then it will probably come with the next OTA.
I returned my phone yesterday because of this and got charged $50 restocked fee I was livid! So I ended up buying the phone again today and installing Nova launcher to remove that parallaxitive effect.

That's just loyalty. Some people are just sell outs and jump to the nearest ban wagon, not me and a couple of others...

Typing like you talk in real life is so 1990 =p
But yeah, I see your point!! Look below, you can barely tell the difference! Which one is the iPhone?? No one knows..
And FYI parallax wallpaper was on android before iOS. 3D live wallpaper. They just rebranded it. And live wallpaper in general has been around since the Nexus One.
Some people are just dumb returning a phone because you dont like wallpaper? This is android. You install another launcher... make your phone your own. I bought the phone for its hardware... not its software... if your too lazy to make the phone your own... please go back to apple.. so you can be stuck in only one vision of a phone.
returning a phone because of the wallpaper? WOW, and i mean WOW, that's pure unrefined stupidity. It would be like returning a house because you didn't like the color of the paint in the living room.
Copy of the IOS?? since when did parallax become solely associated with the IOS? Parallax effects have been around since the 1990s on NES games, animated shows, flash animations and games, etc.; Did they not consider that the parallax effect is actually just a LIVE WALLPAPER? Which has been with android since android 2.1 before its implementation on the IOS? If at all, the Iphone is actually copying and slowly becoming an Android device.
As for the overall appearance of a lot of Android smartphones' default launchers, is Android really copying the IOS? or are they just being affected by the ever changing preference of the general consumer? How do you actually define the "Android look"??? Is it the "80s retro-futuristic" look or the cheesy customized-friendster-ish look of a lot of themes of the multitude of launchers in Android? Is it the low-res or the 3Dish looking icons that makes an Android smartphone look "Android"? Sheeesh, talk about old relics that don't like change and advancement in technology, i for one, like the sleek and clean-looking icons and the minimalist design on the menus on default phone launchers, but that's just my personal preference, if you don't like it then change the launcher, root it and install a custom ROM or something, but SELLING??? Remember, you don't have a feature phone on your hands with a fixed set of capabilities and appearance, IT'S A SMARTPHONE for crying out loud.
Oh, and loyalty? loyalty is about sticking by someone or something whatever that may happen. They sold their phones because they didn't like parallax wallpapers, doesn't that make them literally "sell-outs"? Also, isn't hating the iOS a bandwagon thing too? Because I rode that bandwagon for the fun of it, other bandwagons include iOS fanboyism, Android fanboyism, PC fanboyism, Console fanboyism(with sub-categories and in-fighting amongst PS4 and Xbox fanboys), hating on Nickelback is also a bandwagon(yes, i've researched for years the core-reason why a lot of internet people hate Nickelback....and i've come to the conclusion that it's really a bandwagon), and a lot more bandwagons, there's a bandwagon for almost every imaginable thing, except for Justin Bieber hate, that's a real thing.

Sorry to respond to such an old post but this is the single most stupid thing I think I have ever read. Congrats, you should win an award or something. Like a gilded turd that has been sculpted to resemble an iPhone.
