What's the bestest way to root the Desire S? - HTC Desire S

Can anyone point me in the direction for rooting the Desire S? I have Alpharevx S-off and tried rooting with Superoneclick but I kept looping at Psneuter. I even removed the SD card to make sure it was unmouted. Besides, microdosft.net 2.0 framework wont work on a 64bit machine...parently!
Any other methods?

Gingerbreak 1.20 worked without any problems for me (gotta reboot manually though)
Also, you might want to look at the first sticky in the dev forum, it would have shown you that gingerbreak is the root of choice for this phone.

This, though reboot was automatic on mine.

Yep, gingerbreak.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App

The guide simply says load the Gingerbreak.apk onto the phone "somehow"! How and where to?

InfernalByte
useing usb Tranfer it on to sd card(say downloads) download a file explorer ,locate it with the explorer and run, job done

Thank you I did it.
It was one o thos things I was on half tryin' anyways, knowin' it wouldn't work an then you comes along.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEeee

I S-OFF'd my Desire S within a few minutes using the Alpharevx method. Worked first time without any issues, then rooted using GingerBreak 1.20... very straightforward.

ALPHAREVX is awesome! tried with windows first and failed. then installed ubuntu and within 2min -> S-Off

How to Root CDMA Desire! HOOT 0.98

How to Root CDMA Desire! HOOT 0.98
Original post can be found HERE/
As many of us have researched, the Hoot on the desire is 0.98 and is hard to find any other instructions to root. Im a DROID user on the Cell South network and Last night got my hands on a Desire. The root was tricky but my friends desire is running Cyanogenmod no problem
Note: I take no resposability if you brick your phone an/or any other devices. This is just how i did it.
Instructions:
1: Download unReVoked Rooting tool. Click Here
(This tool works best if you are on linux ubuntu, windows users must install HTC Sync for the ADB Drivers)
2:Linux:
>Extract reflash, Open Terminal, Place your desire in Charge Only Mode with Debugging enabled.
> Plug in the phone and give it a few seconds to be reconized fully.
> In terminal type: cd /path/to/unrevoked then chmod +x reflash then sudo ./reflash and finally
> If it asks you for a password, use your root/user password. Unrevoked should start working and detect the phone.
Windows:
>Again Phone must be in Charge Only Mode with Debugging Enabled.
>Download the unrevoked package, Run the EXE. If you have HTC Sync installed it should detect the phone.
>Works same as Linux, Patience is a virtue.
(DO NOT CLOSE THE PROGRAM UNTIL IT SAYS ITS DONE!!. YOU WILL BRICK YOUR ****)
3. Unrevoked will begin working its magic, Your phone will reboot about 2-3 times. Be Patient!
> When its all over you will be brought to the recovery menu. (Green writing)
> Ours spit out some error code, but i restarted the phone and re entered recovery mode by holding down (Vol Down + Power)\
>You will be brought to a white screen HTC Labeled, Wait for hoot then do volume down to recovery, Push power.
4. After you have re-entered, Go down to manage and backup to Backup your stock ROM.
>Push back after the process has completed.
> Wipe the Device, then press back
> Go to mount and unmount storage.
> Mount your storage card to the computer.
5: After you have your phone plugged in make a folder on the memory card called Roms and Kernels (Whatever you prefer really).
> Go download the latest nightly/stable rom from the BravoC thread.
6:After download, Place the zip into the memory card in the Roms and Kernels folder i asked to make.
> On the android, when the file is done copying, unmount the memory card from the pc.
> Then in recovery menu, install zip file.
> Choose from SD Card
> Go to Roms and Kernels Folder.
> Select the file you downloaded.
> Click yes and enjoy!
7. You can download the Google Addon for your desire Here
YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY ROOTED and flashed YOUR DESIRE, This works on Cellular South, US Cellular, and other BravoC Desires with the 0.98 Hoot.
Don't forget to say thanks!
I have been looking to do this for a long time. And it worked great, the only problem is I don't understand the rom.
in the second step when it says:
> If it asks you for a password, use your root password. Unrevoked should start working and detect the phone.
you should use your user password, not the root password.
(of course your user must be a member of the sudoers group)
No need for passwords. But wish I had my HTC Clock and Calendar back.
You lose some you gain some buddy. there is a clock, look up fancy widget 1. 3 apk in your google box. and you can get it free.. Not gnna post a link cause of the rules. but its the ported HTC clock.
Thanks, but didn't care for that clock, saw one for $2 but couldn't get it to display so I uninstalled it. I know about "Win some, loose some" After all I have had a WinMobile phone for a couple years. And started flashing ROM's since the Touch Pro. My problem is, by the time I find a perfect ROM, I upgrade to a different phone. Did that with the TP1, and again with the TP2. Now the search begins again with the Desire. Actually the only problem I had with the stock 2.1 rom was that I kept running out of room. But thanks for the help and I am off again to find the perfect CDMA ROM!!!
awesome! just got my desire last night. to be sure after i root i will lose clock and calender? also (sorry, maybe a noob question) i like the sence, wasnt a big fanof AOSP and i notice all the Rom's here seem to be for GSM not CDMA. if i was to root and run the stock 2.1 and get rid of all the junk apps in it would that be possible? and lastly, does anybody know if there is a RUU for Csouth's desire incase i need to go back to original like we could with the hero?

1. You shouldn't lose clock and calender.
2. After you root, install Titanium Backup. It will allow you to uninstall those apps you don't want.
3. No RUU's available for CDMA at this time. Make sure you do a nandroid backup immediately after rooting
uhh buddy there is a RUU out for it. Thats what the recovery menu basically is, the installer for the zip file. Cyanogen Mod is the ROM. To keep your Cellular South ROM you just backup like the instructions say, if you ever want to go back you Wipe the device and restore the image from your SD Card. Theres a link to Cyan in the main post. RC1 Came out yesterday!

when i said RUU i meant a stock RUU put out by Csouth just like they gave us for the hero. it would put your phone back exactly like it was when you took it out of the box so if you needed to take it back to the store for whatever reason you could simply use it to go back to original.
ok guys one more question, i got root just fine. gonna keep running my stock rom but when i installed titanium backup (never used it before) it said busybox not installed and i dont have root access. i do have root cuz shoot me is working. i searched busybox in market and it says wont work for the desire yet.. any ideas? i ran into this problem with SU on my hero and had to change to the chainsDD version of SU. could this be the same thing?
ALSO: trying to use ADB and it says permission denied.
EDIT . Spoke to soon and did unrevoked forever and seems to all be working now.
Hi,
I am new to this sort of thing. I just got my phone and I am following this guide and I am thinking about trying it on my phone. Here's what I've got:
HTC Desire
Running Android 2.1
Alltel is my service provider
This is the information I get when I boot up my phone while holding the "back" button:
Bravoc DVT2 Ship S-ON
HBOOT-0.98.0000
MicroP-051e
Touch Panel-SYNT0101
Radio-2.05.10.08.11

Will this guide work with my phone?
The sole reason I'm wanting to do this is because I want to use a Wii remote with emulators on my phone. I am aware that there is an Android app that will do so, but that app doesn't work with phones that use HTC's "sense". I'm also aware that there are certain third-party wireless bluetooth controllers, but don't want to use them. So, I've been told that my only option is to root the phone so that I can have a custom ROM on it. If there is another way to do this without rooting, I'd love to know what that is.
Any information pertaining to any of this would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

Rooting is the only way to flash a custom Rom and yes unrevoked will work with your hboot. Not sure about any of the wii stuff your talking about tho.

Thanks. And one other question I forgot to ask: Suppose I do this and an update to android 2.2 comes out for my phone. What should I do then?
If they give you a ruu just do it like normal, but as soon as they do cone out with a ruu for it whether its uscc or cellular south, there will be a custom Rom made from it.

Check the MD5 checksum for the Reflash_Package.exe
Most likely a corrupted installation.
I have the same phone/hboot/ etc...
I was able to root with unrevoked, no problem. I did get an error in the recovery at the end but per this guide, that seems to be normal.
I was able to run a backup in nandroid, which also worked, but I noticed S-on didn't change to S-off. Is this normal for this phone? Should I try rerunning unrevoked?

I had this same issue. I did some research and there is a thread on unrevoked wiki that has an updated unrevoked-forever.zip to flash that gives us successful S-off. There seems to be a problem with S-off ing this route though. After it was complete, the APN info was gone and MMS settings were blank. I used APN backup/restore to put APN info back in, but still would not send/receive. I had to restore MMS via Goldcard, which changed back to S-on. Any ideas?
Since this seems to be the only generic CDMA Desire thread, I have some questions for other CDMA Desire owners. First, the only rom I can find with everything working is CM, but not sure I like the way it looks. I'm looking for a Sense rom. Anyone running a stable one? Second, I have found a rom called Ultimate Droid 2.3 and 2.4 for CDMA desire that looks worth trying. Anybody running it or tried it yet? 3rd, is there any other good forums specifically for CDMA desire? I am sick of having to weed through the billions of GSM threads to find a CDMA one...

Desire HD unlock/debrand

hi all. I’ve been trying to unlock desire HD for a while and eventually managed to get it sorted.
The info was on this site, but scattered around a bit, so if this is useful (i.e. all in one place) let me know..
Like all these things:
IM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE, AND YOU SHOULD ONLY DO THIS IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING...!
IT WORKED FOR ME FIRST TIME. I DID THIS AS AN EDUCATIONAL EXERCISE ON A BRANDED ORANGE UK HTC DESIRE HD PHONE.
This was done with no sim card installed at any point, just a formatted SD card.
First do a factory reset of the phone with an SD card inside, no sim.
Start the phone, and go through the basic setup, by skipping most things, just so you can get to the home screen.
Step 1. Put your device in USB debug mode.
Press 'settings', then 'applications', press 'development', then tick 'usb debugging'
Step 2. Get visionary and install to the phone to do temproot, then permroot.
The apk file you need is com.modaco.visionaryplus.r.14.apk
I will try to upload, if the site lets me. Otherwise a quick search will find it.
Once it is installed to your phone (i used the htc desktop sync tool to install the app) by connecting my phone, select htc sync as the type of connection (as opposed to charge only) then from HTC sync suite (on your PC) select application installer, then select the visionary .apk file.
Once installed, disconnect the phone and power cycle the phone. (With all the power cycles mentioned in this post there is no 'holding of other keys' required)
Once back up, go into settings on the phone and you will see the visionary logo in your list of applications.
Start the application, and you will see the temp root option. Select this, and then come out of the application and power cycle your phone.
Once you do this, and the phone is back up again, go back into the visionary app, and then select permroot option.
Then again power cycle your phone. BTW, i did not select the tick box to make the folders r/w, some instructions said to do this.
Once you have restarted the phone for the second time, it should be perm rooted. To confirm its rooted, you can take the time to install a terminal program, and run an 'SU' command, but i did not bother. I just figured that the permroot worked.....which it did...
OK we are finished with visionary, thanks visionary guys..!
Step 3:
You need to get hold of the 'HD easy radio tool', again, i will try to upload the file.
Basically you need to unzip the zip file to a folder on your PC. Connect your HTC Desire HD, and then select 'charge only' in the phone selection. (i happened leave the HTC sync suite running on the PC, even though it was idle)
Go to the folder you unzipped on your pc and run the desire hd easy radio tool_V2_2.exe. you then get several options to choose. I went the whole way and selected the first option 'super CID,s-off, unlock'
Then proceeded to do it. It took about 30s to 1m. You should get a message that it was successful.
Thanks easy radio tool guys!!
Step 4.
You need a ROM, or RUU file. I chose this one. Its quite a large file and i will try to upload. I got it from this (xda) site, but cant find it now. From what i understand this one is completely 'blank' ie it does not appear to have lots of modifications, and it appears (from what i see on my phone) to be a clean factory rom. I tried to upload, but too big for site. You may need to google it.
RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.72.405.3_R_Radio_12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17_M2_release_161342_signed.exe
Connect your phone (again in charge only mode) and then start the 'RUU_Ace....' application on your PC.
It will start an HTC installer application that will try to connect to your phone. It will then show the current ROM you have installed, and confirm that you want to update to the one shown.
Remember to have a good charge in your battery, and don't disconnect during this point, you will brick your phone if you do. Make sure your PC does not go to sleep, and have it on external power if its laptop.
The flashing process takes about 2-5 minutes.
Once complete the pc htc application will tell you all was good.
The phone needs to be rebooted, if it has not done so already, and when it starts up, the phone will be brand new. No orange logos, no orange s/w, and fully unlocked to use any SIM card.
Good luck!
The only thing is using the 1.72 ruu you will lock yourself out of hboot and you missed off eng s-off as you would need this if you decide to flash a different Rom or update the radio
You also will not have root access once flashed as its been explain in the forums including the thread warning do not flash 1.72
The method is good but add the eng s-off and advise to flash 1.32.405.6 not the 1.72

Thanks, this worked for me first time.
what does the eng s-off mean and will I have any problems with OTA updates?
sorry new to this
Thanks

What makes it worse mate is all he done is downloaded the tools then made a guide then uploaded the tools what could work well if it was the right ruu and included how to do eng s-off which is required
My guide on how to flash radio.img has also got all the info all ready and links to the right threads to do everything you need before flashing anything
So this thread is pointless really the op should have read better

good good
right here goes nothing once again like every one else if you attempt this its at your own risk you can leave the phone as it is if you choose to do so
here is a link to another thread how to downgrade to 1.32 you can follow this guide as there is a high chance it will work but it is difficult to get your head round
but the other option you could try is the way i did it when i wanted to clean my phone of everything i had done including installing custom rom with build 1.72 it did work but it does not work on every phone im told download the signed.exe ruu of 1.32.405.6 from >>>>>here<<<<< 7th one down from top of list
you will need htc sync installed then plug phone in set to charge only
extract the zip folder to the desktop
then run the ruu.exe as you would any other application double click it
follow on screen instructions yes it does take a while and it will wipe your phone of anything you had on it so do a back up of what ever you want to keep
dont forget you can back you contacts up to sd card using people>menu>export to sd card
like i said it is your choice if you use this information i take no responsibility if anything goes wrong but the second option is the way i did it and my phone is running
good luck if you do do it either way let me know how it goes

If not, then you will unroot your phone

Problems Rooting - HELP

Hi
I have a DHD and it was rooted using One Click Radio-S off method and Visionary tool. This worked fine for me for 3 months. My DHD's camera stopped working so I had to send to HTC for repair. I had to install the latest Orange RRU onto the phone and sent the phone back. I have now recieved my fixed phone and Radio S-Off is still on as I didnt take it off. When I try to temproot using visionary, it states rooting and then just sits on a black screen. The only way for me to exit is press home but the phone runs sluggish and I have no root or Superuser.
Any ideas on how I can resolve?
Thanks in Advance
First of all, There is an Q&A sub-forum for this and it's quite easy to find the solution thru Google.
Whilst in repair they usually update your phone to the latest firmware. Since the 1.72.405.3 OTA one can no longer root on the original firmware. Just follow this guide to downgrade and then root/S-off.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
Edit- Typo
Would I need to create a GoldCard. My device is already S-OFF and was branded on Orange before I got it unlocked.
Nope, just put the PD98IMG.zip into your SD and reboot to bootloader. No need to run any commands or make a goldcard.

Incredible S Full Root Successful

Ok im not sure if many people have done this yet but i managed to unlock the security of my phone and manage a full root on my INCS..
basically i followed all the steps mentioned in the alpharevx q and a thread...but made a few changes....instaed of using the optus rom i used the htc_wwe rom...and while making a gold card i noticed that instead of using mmc1 or mmc0 it worked with mmc 2 which i figured out thanks to gold card helper which can be downloaded using the market...also another tip while using the CID, instead of typing it you can simply copy it in cmd, that way it prevents mistakes( also im sure many must be knowing how to do this so i guess its redundant to mention it but what the heck )
p.s. alpharevx does not work with the native asian rom hence i had to use the other one...although its in beta stage it worked perfectly on my phone
anyways if anyone needs help lemme know
This is great! Some of these methods might be used to crack the Sensation's Bootloader, I'm going to go pass this along to the eager minds of the sensation forum, see if they can get anything out of it! Congratulations!

[Q] Desire S Rooting

Hello, im trying to root my 002 147 desire s. Ive searched and tried around 5 guides to do this so far and very frustrated. I have eventually got S off with the new revolutionary tool. When the cmd asked me if i wanted to install clockwork i did not, and i think i should of because i cant get it on at all now because im not rooted. When i enter my hboot recovery, now with revolutionary at the top and select recovery i get another screen with a phone, a red warning sign with an exclamation mark in it. Nothing further happens if i leave the phone alone. If i press vol up and power, i get another set of options, one being flash update, but it never works. Please, if anyone at all can guide me through this process id be very grateful.
Oh yes, ive tried gingerbreak v1.2 to do this also and it did not work.
Thanks
so whats problem with gingerbreak?
whats hboot version?
gingerbreak does nothing, ive copied it to my memory card, installed it and launched it. after waiting for around ten minutes it was still doing nothing so i reset the phone. have tried this a few times waiting upto 20 minutes and it wont root. my hboot is 0.98.0002. if i install a custom rom that is already rooted, how would i go about doing that, ive tried this also, do i need to rename things that go in the root of my memory card for them to be recognised in hboot ? thanks for the reply and help
Can anyone help ? Thanks
all is good, i used this guide to temp root and use revolutionary tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194488 then used this guide to install clockwork http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=852905 then rooted it easily with this file su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed copied to the root of my sd card. hope this helps others who had the same problems as me.
