[Q] Desire S Rooting - HTC Desire S

Hello, im trying to root my 002 147 desire s. Ive searched and tried around 5 guides to do this so far and very frustrated. I have eventually got S off with the new revolutionary tool. When the cmd asked me if i wanted to install clockwork i did not, and i think i should of because i cant get it on at all now because im not rooted. When i enter my hboot recovery, now with revolutionary at the top and select recovery i get another screen with a phone, a red warning sign with an exclamation mark in it. Nothing further happens if i leave the phone alone. If i press vol up and power, i get another set of options, one being flash update, but it never works. Please, if anyone at all can guide me through this process id be very grateful.
Oh yes, ive tried gingerbreak v1.2 to do this also and it did not work.
Thanks

so whats problem with gingerbreak?
whats hboot version?

gingerbreak does nothing, ive copied it to my memory card, installed it and launched it. after waiting for around ten minutes it was still doing nothing so i reset the phone. have tried this a few times waiting upto 20 minutes and it wont root. my hboot is 0.98.0002. if i install a custom rom that is already rooted, how would i go about doing that, ive tried this also, do i need to rename things that go in the root of my memory card for them to be recognised in hboot ? thanks for the reply and help

Can anyone help ? Thanks

all is good, i used this guide to temp root and use revolutionary tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194488 then used this guide to install clockwork http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=852905 then rooted it easily with this file su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed copied to the root of my sd card. hope this helps others who had the same problems as me.

Here is another easy and secure way to root your Desire S. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194720

[Q] Please Help...Htc shows on screen then goes black..

Ok so i tried to root my htc inspire, the procees completed and then now phone is not working..if i take the battery out put it back in the htc screen comes on then it faes away to a black screen. I have tried to hboot by putting zip file on sd, ehen i do that i notice the hboot screen flash for split second(it says checking pd98img.zip...no image or wrong image...thats as far as i can get! If someone could please help i would be grateful thank you.
How long does it say that for? At least for me it takes a bit before it actually lets me through to hboot
yes when i power it up i get to thr htc screen and before id fades i can get to boot menu...thats as far as i can go..
If you can still get into hboot then you should be fine.
If you can select recovery and get into clockwork with no problems than you need to get a new rom onto your SD card and flash it via clockwork recovery. If you can not get into recovery than you will need to get a signed ruu that has been rooted and place it on your SD root and flash through hboot.
If you get into hboot and notice that it still says S-ON. Then your root did not work and you will need to install the official RUU from HTC website. To do this you will need to boot into hboot. Plug your phone into your pc. Select fast boot, you should see your screen say fastboot USB. If you get there with S-On you can run the RUU. Be sure when installing HTC RUU that you have latest htc sync installed and that it is running in the background otherwise it will freeze during sending zip. If you do get back to stock you can try and root again with ace hack kit.
I will try this later today..Thank You

Before i try when i get phone into boot mode, wen i try recovery the phone restarts....is this ok and still follow the steps you have given me?
Yes. I would still follow the same procedure. Do you know for sure that you are S-Off? It says at the top of boot screen.

I have the exact same problem as described above, but different history. I rooted my phone using attn1's ace-hack-kit-v12.3 (brilliant tool) and was successful. I then tried to load coredroid 8.1 (not successful). I hosed the phone and had the constant white HTC screen. I'll skip the gory details of why I couldn't get past that, but I at last discovered I could still use attn1's kit to access the phone. I loaded a stock rom just to get in (which worked). I thought I had lost s-off because I didn't have a superuser app (I'm new to this stuff) and so I tried using the hack again several times. Bottom line, I'm now at the same point as the original poster. My Inspire will boot to the white screen, which fades to black. I can get into hboot, but anything I try within that screen still fades to black.
Now I don't have clockwork on the phone. I am still S-OFF
Also, the attn1 hack no longer works for me. Says the phone is not connected/drivers not installed/usb debugging is off. Drivers are installed and the phone is connected.
I don't have anything on my SD card--reading through this, it sounds like I need to put a rom on it and name it PD98IMG. But I would like confirmation that this is the right thing to do--I've screwed my phone up twice by being too hasty. Don't want to do it again.
Tips? Or need more info?
Thanks!
t5
Unfortunately, you can't just put a rom on your sd card and rename it to PD98IMG. It will not work. If you can get into recovery from the Hboot menu, then you can wipe and flash a new rom from there. If you are unable to get into recovery then I might suggest a battery pull if you have not done that yet. If you have done this or it is still not working, then you might have to run a RUU to get your phone back to stock or rooted stock. Those RUU roms would be in PD98IMG format. You can find different threads for those in the General section. If you use the RUU you should still be S-Off. If you went back to stock you can use the hack kit again to root or use a PD98IMG file that will retain root.

[Q] Using official HTC unlocker for Sensation, Help installing Cyanogen

I recently "unlocked" my HTC Sensation 4g through HTC's official method. However, after successfully unlocking it, my phone is still set on S-On. Because of this, I am not recognized as a superuser, and so I cant boot into Clockwork Mod Recovery. Can anyone who knows more than me about this please give me a hand? This is my first time attempting any of this.
to make sure i understand this correctly- your phone now says "unlocked" at the top,but is still s-on?
what have you done to root?
once you have a truly unlocked bootloader, you can install a recovery thru that bootloader, and then flash superuser in that recovery.
having superuser permissions within a rom and being able to boot to a recovery shouldnt have anything to do with the bootloader.
if you are unable to install clockwork,or some other custom bootloader thru htcs "unlocked" bootloader, then they have lied to us... its not truly unlocked. that or something happened during the unlock process, possibly.
sorry im not of more help, its been awhile since i looked at the developer website. are there support forums there?
if everything is functioning correctly and you cant load whatever you want thru hboot, this unlock program is a joke. you could have gotten s-off with revolutionary or an xtc clip and not alerted them to the fact that you were messing with software and potentially "voided all or parts" of your warranty.
please keep us updated on this- im very interested to know how it turns out.
Thats exactly what it says. The method I used is on the front page of the htc dev site.
(the forum wont let me post outside urls yet)
The top of my H-boot screen says
"*** UNLOCKED ***
PYRAMID PUT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.80.0000
eMMC-BOOT"
So this is a problem. I think...
I just figured the official method through HTC would be the easiest and safest
Oh and when I try and flash Clockwork Mod Recovery through ROM manager this is the message I get
"You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superusuer was not found at /system/bin/su or /system/xbin/su. Use Google Search on your computer to find instructions to root your phone."
or
"An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands."
So what have you done to root besides unlocking the bootloader? Just tried to install rom manager and clockwork?
Unless you have done something else, you are not rooted, you are just unlocked. Search the sensation forum for a PxxxIMG file that is clockwork recovery. When named that, and placed on root of your SD,hopefully your hboot will find and flash it.
Once you have done that, delete the PxxxIMG From your SD card, and place the superuser.zip file on it. Enter recovery thru hboot, and flash superuser.zip.it will install the root files.
After that you should be rooted.
Later I can try and find some links if you can't find them. PxxxIMG will be specific to the pyramid,I'm not sure what it is. For example, this type of file for the thunderbolt is PG05IMG.
Hope that helps.
edit:
here are some links for you:
download clockwork from here or multiupload (found the download in this thread)
download from one of those 2 places. rename the download "PG58IMG" and place on the root of your sd card. boot to hboot(power+vol down). when asked to update chose yes.
download superuser from here (this is the one i always use. found it here)
after deleting or renaming PG58IMG from your sd card, put the superuser.zip, boot to hboot, select recovery, then flash the superuser.zip.
hope it helps
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Well I tried what you recommended and it did not work. But then I tried revolutionary and I managed to get s-off. However HBOOT doesnt recognize the P58IMG file. It just keeps saying P58IMG.*** NO IMAGE. (*** being different file types).
Im not sure if I need to try the recovery now that Im s-off but I cant flash the superuser file either.
gah! i wish you hadnt run revolutionary yet,as now we wont really know if your "unlocked" s-on hboot would have allowed the flash like a truly s-off one will.
one thing i know for certain,is that the troubles youre having werent because you were s-on. being able to place the superuser app,aND matching binary within the OS is not dependent on the hboot being s-off. s-off is handy,as it allows another method of flashing partitions like the radio and recovery. in the old days, before all the exploits were patched, alot of devices were rooted and a custom recovery installed from within the OS without ever bothering with the bootloader. the eris is a good example- prolly 95% of the eris community is still s-on and they change roms and such all the time.
-so i guess you downloaded the PG58IMG from multiupload? when i tried the first link, there was no valid attachement.
-you did name PG58IMG,correct? if you did name the file "P58IMG" maybe thats the prollem?
-make sure your SD card is formatted FAT32( not just plain FAT) and make sure you put the file on the root(not inside another folder)
*assuming you named the file correctly, have a FAT32 sd card, and placed the file onto the root of the SD,what happend when you went to hboot?
heres what should happen: the green writing flashes, hboot finds a PG58IMG file, then youll see a blue status bar on the far left as the phone unpacks it,then gold as it checks it. since the recovery file is small youll see that very fast. then you should get the "vol up to update" prompt.
if you have named the file correctly,FAT32 card, etc. maybe you just got a bad download. try downloading it again.
i downloaded and checked it- it contains a recovery image and an android info file,so it should be good to go. if you want to verify the integrity, the md5 i got is: 940fa14af3dcd055132adf292f668ad3
last and not least,if you ran revoltuinary it should have installed clockwork for you. if you dont want to keep messing with PG58IMG files, just run revoltionary again. it should detect your s-off,then ask if you want to install clockwork.
im sure youre getting a lil fustrated, but the method for rooting new phones is what im reccomending you to do:
1)unlock bootloader(revolutionary or htc unlock)
2)install recovery thru bootloader
3)install superuser files from recovery
it does work,i promise... ive done it many times on my thunderbolt.
Awesome, everything worked great. I had a few hitches but I figured them out. Thank you so much for all the help, I really appreciate it.
Until just now... I installed cm7 and now when i boot up my phone all I see is about 6 seconds of the cm7 start up animation (the one with the blue android guy on a skateboard). Then the phone starts up that same animation again. Its been doing this for about an hour now.

sounds like you didnt do a full wipe. pull the pattery,go back to recovery thru hboot, and wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik chache, and format /system. i dont usually format /system,but when youre stuck in a bootloop it cant hurt
well it was my own dumb fault... like extracting the .zip files instead of leaving them compressed.
And yeah now i totally have cm7 running! thanks for all the help man. I really appreciate it
No prollem.glad you got it figured out.

[Q] Cant install new ROM -> stuck in white HTC screen

I have tried installing several different ROMS all with the same result. -> stuck in the HTC white screen, not even the black letter that come after it normaly.
I followed the noob s-off guide, did every step like in the guide. Next i tried loading a new rom (Revolution HD and RCmix) both are the newest version as of now. Installing the entire ROM takes like 2 mins max (seems kinda short) but in both cases it says it is installed OK.
Everytime all i could do was reinstall the recovey (because that didnt work also) and then do a recovery of my old ROM.
I searched all the forums but nobody with a Sensation is having trouble with it.
I have a Sensation with HBOOT 1.18 and i have Android 2.3.4 with the 1.45.401.3 softwareversion.
I really dont get it. Can anybody please help with my Sensation problem???

do you have root access? s-off and root are two different things.
something definitely is off was your h-boot 1.18 prior to applying the noob proof s-off? because generally after gaining root your h-boot will change to 1.17xxxxxx
you will need this file
after s-off install clockworkmod or [4ext recovery (in my signature)]
*after recovery installed
*copy paste the downloaded file (su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip) into the rootof your device
*reboot into recovery and apply update.zip
it might say the install was aborted. (go ahead and try again) if it says aborted one more time thats alright. it did this for me for both my sensations but it still gave me root access.
there is an app called Root Checker on the market that will verify if you have gained root access and give you possible solutions if you havent acquired root access through this process.
after you have achieved root access you will be able to apply roms successfully
Let me know if this works
Hi rddocke,
Thanks for the quick reply.
I forgot to mention in my post that i did do the rooting explained in the guide and by you, i am 100% sure i have root acces on my device, i can run titanium backup for instance (and actually backup), use setcpu and i have the extra "Superuser" tile in my list of programs.
I have HBOOT 1.18 before S-OFF and after I have 1.17.11111 i believe (definitely 1.17.xxxxxx).
U have any more help to give?

Hi,
I'm not sure which guide you used to get s-off,but have a look in my sig for the s-off guide there.
Did you do the super CID stage?
If you haven't,that might explain why none of the ROMS you are trying are working.

[Resolved] [Q] How to unroot and turn s-on on HTC Incredible S?

Hi to all, i'm jauffre and i'm new in XDA. I have a problem and, as i searched all the forum without finding an answer, i need your help.
Last week i rooted my htc incredible s using the revolutionary tool, wich upgraded the hboot to 6.13.1002. i installed with the clockwork mod recovery tool a modded rom, and it was great. but sunday my phone crashed to the ground, and now the cover is broken (so i need to send it to the warranty).
i spent last day searching a guide for dummies to unroot the phone, and using the signed RUU (downloaded from this site) it appeared to work, but my htc is still s-off.
now, i know i need to downgrade the hboot, and i tried everything (i reinstalled froyo, updated the radio and then updgraded to 2.3.3), but this is still a problem.
please, help me!
Hey guys, this is the procedure i did to solve my problem. do it at your own risk.
first of all i must say that with this process i'll have the hboot back, but NOT the bootloader (so when you hold "volume back+power on" you will see the modded bootloader, not the stock one). i don't know how did you rooted your phone, what programs did you use, and i cannot assure you this procedure will work. if you're not sure, don't do anything.
first, you have to look for the original RUU of your phone (you can find it on this site). then follow this thread to find the rom.zip file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790022), where you can find several files. you need the android-info.txt and the hboot_xxx.img files.
open the hboot.img file with a text editor; in the first line you can find many strange symbols, and after that there will be a string of numbers (that is the hboot version).
you have to know what version of hboot have you currently on your phone (if you used the revolutionary tool, it will be probably 6.13.1002) and simply change the hboot.img string so that the release number is higher (than the modded hboot; i.e. you can write 7.09.0000).
after that you have to make a zip file with the android-info.txt and the hboot_xxx.img file you have just modified, and if you have an incredible s, call it "pg32img.zip".
if you have another device, simply you can turn on your phone in the bootloader mode, and if there's a memory card the device will look for a file, which name appears (it's the code you need).
then put that pg32img.zip file on the root of your sd card, reboot in bootloader mode (volume down+power) and follow the instructions to do the upgrade. after that, if you restart in bootloader, you'll see that the hboot version will be 7.09.0000 (the same you wrote) and will be s-on.
now, search and download the latest version of "superoneclick" (an application that should root and unroot your phone), and start it. link your phone to the pc and start the unroot process.
when it is done, simply leave your phone linked to the pc and start the RUU.exe file you downloaded. start the update process and if you have done everything good, at the end you'll have your phone with the stock hboot and the s-on.
i'm not a serious programmer, i simply was really lucky (i really didn't know if that could have worked) but i did it. i don't know how did you do the root, and how does the superoneclick work, so i am not responsible for any bricked phone.
if you are not sure, simply send your device to the htc assistance (better pay than have a new paperweight).
good luck
download superoneclick select unroot and uninstall the superuser app.Oh and download and flash your phone's stock rom
ok, thank you for the help!
there's a little problem: at the end of the superone process it says me "superuser not found", so it can't be deleted.
so i remade the root (using superone) and unrooted; then installed the RUU, but nothing: it's still s-off. what can i do now?
i tried to make superoneclick work, but with no success... although i have installed the superuser.apk, the program still says me there's no SU, and can't unroot my device.
Any suggestions?
ok guys, i did it...
first i remade the root process, and flashed the superuser.apk. then i wanted to "upgrade" the hboot, from 6.13.1002 (revolutionary) to 7.13.0000 (simply i changed the 1 to 7 opening the hboot signed image with a text editor). then i launched superoneclick, and started the unroot process. at the end, i launched the signed htc RUU with gingerbread, and now i have my htc incredible s with s-on and hboot 1.13.0000.
=)
the last thing: does someone know hot to put the original htc bootloader?
cant someone build a uniform high performance rom
i added a guide to do the process go to the first post and read it all
thanks for the guide, just one confusion here, that after putting the pd****.img into the sdcard, i need to goto bootloader right? (not recovery)
Edit: worked in first attempt . Just one suggestion if you can replace word "Recovery" with "Bootloader" inorder to avoid confusion for other users
thank you fshami! i just corrected the guide
Hi I just tried following the guide posted on the first post using the android-info.txt and the hboot_xxx.img files received by the OTA update released recently as well as one downloaded from the net "OTA_Vivo_Gingerbread_S_hTC_Asia_India_2.12.720.5-1.36.720.1_release_190041sn70bk4icw74exvv"
On both occasions the bootloader update failed.
I am unable to install the OTA update. This has been downloaded quite a few times already and the phone just hangs with the android logo screen.
P.S. My phone is an Incredible S purchased legally in India around June 2011.
Thanks.
then put that pg32img.zip file on the root of your sd card, reboot in bootloader mode (volume down+power) and follow the instructions to do the upgrade. after that, if you restart in bootloader, you'll see that the hboot version will be 7.09.0000 (the same you wrote) and will be s-on.
Sorry my friend , but this don´t work....
Sorry.....
I thought this is what I was searchinf for years but...What if I have an USB issue? Like usb brick? So I cant connect my htc with the pc x.x for superoneclick

[Q] Just can't get S-OFF Help Please!

For some reason I can't get my HTC sensation to S-off, I am not new to android or rooting Android phones ( Huwei pulse , HTC wildfire , Htc disire HD, samsung NC110 on 2.3 duel boot with wifi) But this one has got me stuck
I have searched and searched on the net for other solutions/fix's and just find the same methods and no solution.
This is where it all stops every time! ( straight of the bat basically )

I have had 1 OTA and Unlocked bootloader via HTC dev method, I can re-lock and Un-lock nothing makes a difference.
I have the Drivers, ADB, etc, ( and have deleted and re-installed )Factory reset also makes no difference in the outcome, the process stops at the same point ( above) and the time it takes also remains the same regardless of what I do.
I would Like to get access to the root folder to remove the T-Mob and other annoying apps and perhaps in future run a custom rom.
Any one who can help Please?? What am I doing wrong??
Thanks in advance...

Lucky for you I found this same problem yesterday and figured it out lol.
Hope this works......
1) Get to the part where you have to enter in the beta key but don't hit enter yet.
2) On your phone go to settings/connect to PC/Charge only
3) On your phone again go to settings/applications/development/USB debugging and check the box.
4) Hit enter on your computer and see what happens.

make sure you have all your drivers installed. if needed go to your start tab on your computer, right click on computer, device manager & search for the device and make sure it's installed all drivers completely by right clicking and pressing update driver.
sorry if this is known information already, but Hope this helps

Thank you for your help.
Thanks Guy's for you help so far,
I have tride most of your sugestions and I re-installed the htc driver and ADB/fastboot last night.
Then I thought I would do yet another factory reset..... and have another go, But I got a surprise oem recovery is dead??? and so is the factory reset??? both give me a white HTC screen, and this lasts for 1 hour or forever or till I remove the battery. I had not noticed this before.
After I pull the battery the phone will reboot and work as normal. so not bricked yet
Do I now need to re install recovery or ???
Help is much appreciated as I would like to get the thing S-Off before the ICS OTA update arrives, Tho I will probably not get the update till I fix the recovery issue.
For you followers, I have just ( finally )received the OTA update to ICS It is installing as I type.
My location is the south of Holland, My phone is the sensation and network provider is T-Mobile NL.
Just thought I should let you know.
Now once this is installed I will start reading about getting the phone rooted.
Final Solution
Go for Tacoroot method..it works...dont worry abt bricking and all..
search tacoroot method...(tricky process)it gives temporary root access...
then do Revolutionary S-off...it definitely works...
Install 4ext recovery
install Superuser...
install suitable firmware
insatall rom...
You might go into bootloops but dont panic...installing ROM will take care of that..
Ping me for any doubts...INDIA
Go ahead and ROOT...life becomes Awesome after that...

if you wnat to enjoy custom roms and all dont do OTA ICS update
as it will update your bootloader to 1.27 with S-ON
and there is currently no solution/tool to S-OFF with H-BOOT 1.27
so i strongly advise you to stay out of it
for your previous HBOOT (i presume its 1.18) there is solution..
you need to use tacoroot to do a temp-root then follow the revolutionary
there is a guide for that
search for it
