ED1 to EE4 - Verizon Droid Charge

I have rooted my charge on ED1. I dont have CWM or anything installed. I am wanting to update to EE4 and reroot it. I have been reading but finding different answers. My question is can I just take the OTA update and then reroot the charge?

What I did was use ODIN and flash the full ED2, accept the OTA and then root once on EE4.

ED2
Is ED2 the update before the EE4 update? Also thank you for your quick responce.

I cant find the ED2 update that you would use with oden. I found the ED2 update zip file that you would use with cwm. Could you please point me in the right direction for the download for the ED2 that you would use with oden.

Easiest way possible.
Go Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1096657
Download the first rom (THE ONE WITH THE BURNING DOWNLOAD)
This is ED2 to be flashed using ODIN.
Use the second download of the rom. ( THE ONE WITH THE SPINNING FLOPPY DISK. NOT THE BURNING DOWNLOAD)
The second version is EE4 to be flashed with CWM.
Pull battery, plug OEM Cable into phone. Hold Vol Dn button and plug into PC. Replace battery. Open ODIN3. You will see a yellow box show up on your Odin showing you are connected and in Download mode.
Using the AlteredBeast download you just grabbed.
Click PDA. Browse to the .tar file. click ok (MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON PDA)
click start and let ODIN do it's thing.
Should get Passed 6:30 (or something around there) when done.
From here you have CWM+ROOT+VOODOO
Now you can flash any "FROYO" rom you want.
I would suggest staying away from the Gingerbread Roms from now as we are still testing them.

i am in a similar position. i have rooted ed1 and wanted ee4. i do not want a custom rom. why is it suggested to go ed1 to ed2 then ee4. can i just do ee4 ota and then root. my only problem is that i see no root for ee4 listed in the sticky thread. i currently don't want lagfix or voodoo just stock rooted ee4. the rooted ee4 thread listed in the sticky is old and has bad links

drewcam88
I am in the same boat you are in. I am still looking. If I find anything I will let you know. My thunderbolt was easier to root then this. lol

I honestly don't understand why you all are having such a hard time with this.
If you want a rooted stock rom. sorry the closest you will get is the EE4 Debloated 4.2.1 rom. If you follow the instructions i gave you, then you can flash the EE4 Debloated rom from within CWM.
Part of the rooting process is having CWM. If you don't want voodoo, then you have other options that you can find by searching from the main page "CWM UPDATE".
Hope this helps.

Sorry for the confusion. But I have been able to root the last stock roms of previous phones so I didn't understand why a custom is needed. I now understand that there seems to be no root for the stock ee4 rom. So you are saying just flash the custom ee4 rom and be done with it? Does doing the OTA for ee4 remove root?

Yes sir. The OTA pushes will return your phone to unrooted stock. Basically like using ODIN to flash the stock.

Just follow this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122657
As long as you follow it word for word(which is very easy as it's noob-proofed) you will have absolutely no trouble. Just get your phone to stock EE4 by accepting the OTA download and follow the guide, you'll be rooted and lagfixed(if you want to lagfix, but why wouldnt you?!)in about 30minutes.

so i don't seem to have root. i got cwr, kernel, and Rom installed but no apps have root. superuser was installed with Rom. now what???

Then you are rooted. I'm not exactly sure what you thought was going to happen. You can now dl apps that are reserved for rooted phones. Regular apps do no need superuser to run. The apps will tell you in the description if it needs the superuser rights or not.
If you want to test it out the simple way.
Download Android Terminal Emulator.
at the "$" prompts type in : su (lowercase letters as linux is case sensitive)
if your prompt changes to "#" Then you are rooted.

dude I was not rooted. all root apps would not run. I tried a new kernel and that fixed the issue

[Odin]EE4 various packages Read Carfully

Warning!!!! Do not flash these if
A. You dont know what you are doing
B. you have not already done a manual update to EE4
C. you do not understand what they are for
XDA, any developer, or myself are NOT responsible for anything you do to your phone.
All packages are compressed in .rar form they need to be extracted and flashed with odin. If you are a developer and just want the deodex system...well you know what to do. Also Notice Using a custome kernel on EE4 is required for root but this also write protects your sdcard for some reason so just be aware.
First package:Fully stock kernel, recovery and system(this will come in handy)
www.androphiles.com/files/android/EE4stock_DXC.tar.rar
Second package: Deodexed system, imnuts modded CWM , stock kernel (not rooted)
www.androphiles.com/files/android/EE4deodx_DXC.tar.rar
Warning having a Custom kernel Write protects your sdcard when trying to mount to your PC otherwise everything works
Third package: Deodexed system, imnuts modded CWM, jt voodoo kernel (Rooted)
www.androphiles.com/files/android/EE4dxvodo_DXC.tar.rar
Again if you need instructions on how to flash these just hold off till we can mess with this build some more.
Awesome, but, definitely holding off on this.
So we're supposed to update to EE4 before installing any of these packages?
Sweeeet. Thanks driodxcon!
Dammit, you never figured out the sdcard problem?

Kinda curious tho if we are already running your AB build with a custom kernel with Voodoo and lagfix how will we go about updating to EE4 so we don't mess up and loose root access in the process. Thanks in advance for any input.

Kind of a tedious process, but here is what I did:
1) I disabled the lagfix (create a folder called 'disable-lagfix' in /sdcard/Voodoo)
2) rebooted the phone to disable the voodoo lagfix
3) ran the stock rooted ED1 ODIN file (which I created )
4) took the OTA ED2 update and lost root
5) downloaded the EE4 update file (http://goo.gl/XTDA9) and renamed it 'update.zip' and put it on my sdcard
6) booted into recovery and applied update.zip and then let it boot
7) flashed JTs rooted voodoo kernel and his CWM in ODIN (you should probably delete the disable-lagfix folder after step 6)
NOTE: I didn't wipe at all during this process.
I have EE4 and JTs voodoo kernel and I've confirmed that I have root access.
Now it's time to get rid of this orange and brown crap... again :/

so after the whole 9 yard process of getting it back to stock and then updating all the way up to EE4, when you flashed JT's voodoo kernel, you still maintained all the capabilities of the EE4 update? currently, i believe it seems that flashing a ROM like altered beast (after you've updated to EE4 from stock), makes the functions of the EE4 update disappear?

[Q] Quick Root Questions

I have never rooted an android device before. I have read several of the posts in this forum on the subject and have a few questions before I start:
1. I am still on ED1. Should I upgrade to EE4 before I root?
2. I was going to follow this guide. Is this the best way?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122657
3. Before doing this, I want to make sure I know how to get my phone back to stock in case I have a problem. Do you just use the Odin full restore?
4. I was thinking about installing a voodoo lagfix kernal. Is the difference worth it?
5. (Voodoo Lagfix Kernals) I also read that once you flash a lagfix kernal, if you (accidentally) try to install any future OTA updates you will brick your phone. Is this true? Is there a way to disable the update nag screen so that I don't accidentally hit the upgrade button?
Thanks for the time.
Brian
What about just question #1? I am 99% sure that I should OTA upgrade to EE4 before doing anything, but I want to make sure. Please help.
Thanks,
Brian
1 & 2. Yes. Accept the OTA update to EE4 so that you get the new basebands, then follow the steps in the link you posted.
You can find all the kernels and roms you want in the development section. The basic steps are: Download Odin, download CWM, download kernel, download rom, flash CWM with odin, flash kernel with cwm, flash rom with cwm. (flashing roms is optional, but you need to Odin CWM and flash a kernel in order to get permanent root.)
3. The steps here are the best way to get back to factory stock with no root: http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...harge-full-factory-tar-flashing-software.html (I would do a wipe and whatnot to be safe and also make sure you have lagfix disabled so you're back to the rfs filesystem)
4. I think the vodoo lagfix makes a difference. I would recommend it.
5. I don't know if accepting an OTA update while running the voodoo kernel will brick your phone for sure, but there is a way to disable the OTA update notifications. I read it somewhere in these forums, but I don't remember where. If I find it then I'll share the link.
Thanks man. +1 to you

Rooting Question

I followed the instructions on how to root. I am a little confused on some things. Does the kernel give you root or does the rom. I have CWM installed and was able to flash the imnuts peanutbutta jelly time kernel. The kernel shows up when I look under "About Phone." I was going to flash Gummy charged 1.9.1 but in reading the instructions it says to make sure you have root. To check root I downloaded the terminal emulator and typed "su" without the exclamation marks. It said permission denied. That is my dilemma. Do I flash the rom to gain root or do I do something else? Sorry for the questions.
Did you follow; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122657 ?
That's pretty straight forward. Also, it's the ROM that gives you root not the kernel.
Just flash the full ODIN package of the 1.9.1 that will root you automatically.
So i install using odin just like using odin for cwm?

No, its actually the kernel that gives you root, in this case. Hence needing root BEFORE you flash a rom.
But yes, the quickest and easiest way to get to gummyCHARGED is to flash the full odin. It will put you on gummyCHARGED FE 1.91 with imnuts OTB kernel, and latest CWM.

Root, EP OTA?

I just finished putting on Clockwork recovery after the OTA and then flashed Imosyen's 4.0 kernel. During the process I heard the Voodoo stuff take place, but upong rebooting my phone I don't have root. I read in these boards on the EE4 OTA that this should have worked, any ideas and has anyone got thier phone rooted on the new OTA?
Thanks.

Try getting back into CW recovery and let me know how that goes. If so then just download superuser and you got it.
No root
I can boot into CWR after using ODIN to put it on once and under voodoo controls app it shows my phone as being voodoo on all partitions, just don't have root. I knew the OTA would kill root, was just hoping thier was a quick fix out there like just flashing a kernel. The phone is pretty snappy though with imoysens kernel running voodoo and using ADW as the launcher. Like what I see so far.

Someone didn't read the instructions for properly installing the leaked OTA?
BEFORE YOU ODIN BACK TO EE4, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE SU FLASHABLE ZIP, THE OTA UPDATE AND IMOSEYON'S KERNEL ON YOUR SDCARD!
Make sure the update file is renamed to "update" and that it's on the root of your sdcard. (not in any folders or anything)
Odin back to EE4. Reboot normally.
Turn the phone off, then reboot into Stock Recovery and run the update.
Once the update finishes and the phone boots regularly. Reboot into Download Mode and plug the phone into the computer.
Start Odin, Uncheck "Auto Reboot", select PDA, NOT PHONE!
Click on the PDA tab and find your recovery file then click "start."
Once it is done and you see the word "PASS" on Odin, unplug the usb cable and press down all three buttons to boot into recovery (volume up, home, power)
Once in recovery, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, mount /system and flash the SU flashable zip.
Go back and wipe cache and dalvik again, mount /system again and flash the kernel.
After that, your recovery will stick and you're good to go. You are now rooted and running on EP4D.
Here is the flashable Super User zip. http://www.multiupload.com/V6R1RZJPXV

most if not all root issues can be fixed by simply flashing superuser in CWM (you can get the latest .zip from the dev ChainsDD's superuser site), then downloading/updating it in the market if it doesn't show up

If interested, the CWM version found here is already rooted.

Can someone give me instructions on how to get back to stock, gain root, and install custom ROMS/ MIUI

1. for restoring stock : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989

4. Install custom roms.

Then I wouldn't do that 2.1 Odin one click.... Look for a stock 2.2 Odin or Heimdall, make sure to read thoroughly too.

Note: as b-eock pointed out, make sure what was your stock version before restoring it!
I've always just flashed newer than my stock to avoid that problem and it always works well for me, after bricking or when i want to flash a new rom i flash to cappy gingerbread and flash boog kernal to get CWM(clockworkmod). CWM is essential is you plan on flashing to other roms. If you plan on flashing to another rom anyways it doesn't matter which version of stock you load as long as it work so I'd just flash 2.2 or newer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
- this has all the odin 1-click flashable packages for captivate
To do everything you want to do...
flash back to stock, use 2.2 or one of the 2.3 versions. If you plan on flashing to a gingerbread rom (2.3) you'll most likely need the gingerbread bootloaders, if you don't originally flash a odin package with the gingerbread bootloaders you might be asked to install them later depending on what rom you use
incase you don't know odin is the computer program used to flash one click packages, you can find it by searching XDA, one click packages won't require it.
odin has to be open before you plug the usb into the phone putting it into download mode.
to flash to other roms you need CWM (ClockWorkMod-a customized recovery mode for the phone) the thread in this post has links to odin flashable kernals with CWM for each software build. To get CWM flash the respective kernal for the version you use. You'll need odin to flash the new kernal, its essentially stock apart from CWM. In odin select PDA and browse to the kernal zip to flash it.
you can search around XDA for oneclickroots, they will typically be odin or CWM flashable it's quite straight forward. New roms will typically already be rooted so you shouldn't have to root again.
good luck!
Does anyone know which exact ODIN i need to flash to get back to 2.2 from download mode.
You can use adamoutler's uckb2 heimdall one click. That's stock 2.2.
But whitch ODIN do i use.

Unfortunately, there is currently no Odin one-click of stock Froyo (at least that I'm aware of). If you want stock Froyo, you'll need to either piece it together with full Odin, or use the Heimdall One-Click.

Take a look in this post. That should get you the right 3E recovery.
Once you have that, you can either use ROM Manager to install CWM recovery, or see if you can find a kernel with it already baked in and use ODIN to flash the kernel (look for the speedmod kernel).
Or you could flash stock GB, but that updates bootloaders and is a whole different can of worms.

Normally, the answer would be yes. However, as part of the Froyo update, AT&T managed to mess up the recovery menu, meaning that it won't flash unsigned packages. This makes getting CWM basically impossible without doing the steps in that post or flashing a different kernel.
You can root if you want to, but doing the steps in that post first will save you some headache.

I already rooted =/ , should i still try this?
If you have full ODIN, go here, and download the kernel labeled "speedmod-kernel-i897-k13c-500hz.tar" at the end of the first post. Open Odin, and in the "PDA" slot, navigate to the .tar file and flash it. That will get you the speedmod kernel, which has CWM, which you need to be able to flash.
Once it's flashed, just hold V+/V-/Power until it reboots, and then you'll be in CWM and can flash MIUI.
I'm assuming you've backed up all your apps with Titanium Backup, right? If you haven't, do that before you do anything else so you don't lose them.
