Interesting that the Sensation has a locked boot loader. It seems HTC are following Apple's view on this that they are going to be discouraging people from interfering with their software. I wonder if with time other Android manufacturers will follow the same course.

I think you'll find, that it is the other way around. All Winmo devices, going ack to 2002, have had locked bootloaders that will only accept a Signed ROM. Someone will develop a Hard SPL type system and all will be happy
Oh, and moved to General as not Rom Dev

Every other manufacturer already does this, htc was the best. Now they think they are selling enough phones to screw over the dev community, and it seems Sony Ericsson is taking up the mantle for the dev community.
I for one an very disappointed in htc for this. Was holding off for this phone, but may now go the atrix, both are locked so why not get better spec'd phone and hope its cracked. Or go the Xperia arc, at least I know the bootloader will be open
Very disappointed htc, just wanted you to know that

I thought HTC has been locking their bootloaders for over a year now?
Incredible S is locked, as is the Desire S (I believe) - the Sensation isn't the first
They have been locking their bootloaders, but not encrypting or signing them in any way, it seems now they are
Which makes me ask, Why? They have been doing so well with android devices why act like douches now

HTC has always locked bootloaders. If the phone is popular enough they will break it. The question is is it encrypted. Which is most likely not. All we need most likely is an engineering build then wala the gates will be open. Every one thought the g2 was unrootable then one day permanent root.

I thought it was supposed to be the case that it is highly likely to be encrypted or so it appears to be at this stage. They seem to be making increasing efforts to make sure people are not able to tamper with the OS on it.
I beloved the reason they lock bootloaders is to stop the steady flow of people bricking their devices then calling in to get them replaced... seperating people who can read and follow simple directions from those who can't

Most htc android phones have locked bootloader
Signed code is required since htc desire(i believe nexus one was the last phone that can write unsign code to recovery even with s-on).From desire to desire hd, it was through different exploits to enable s-off. All older exploits are gone since incredible s.

Whats the deal with Motorola phones? Aren't they totally locked?
Part of the problem is irresponsible idiots bricking their phones then sending them in for replacements. Furthermore, and probably the most significant reason: that irresponsible people at tethering too much.
I for one love XDA. However, as it becomes more popular and easier for the layman to hack his phone, the development community becomes a greater threat to manufacturers and wireless providers
LG G2X or Sony for me!

Stop locking bootloader's and you will probably have less people bricking devices.
Or Sony Ericsson's new way of unlocking bootloader, send IMEI to them to unlock. At least that way they know who unlocked and can enforce warranty voiding fairly
We buy the device, we pay, its OUR device, if we want to hack it, then screw you (insert manufacturer) we can, stop telling us what we can and can't do with OUR property

i was thinking of getting the sensation but i hate the thought of them dicking with the boot loader and all the sense bloat so i got a g2x and i could not be happier rooted the day it came out this phone is blazing fast patiently waiting for some cm7 love
I hate how everyone is thinking a bootloader is the end of the road for the sensation. It will be hacked. No ifs ands or buts about it. The sensation is going to be an amazing phone with or without a boot loader. If you want to get a diff phone, that's your loss. But don't tell us your getting a different phone on the sensation's forum. No one cares about your lack of trust in the devs here. I'm getting one and you should too.

@sbryan12144, I wanna believe you dude but if you look at the Incredible S bootloader situation, it doesn't look too good for the Sensation. Unless HTC uses a different method and it's easier to crack.
Not being able to root is a deal breaker for me (I sold the IS because of that) and it's what makes Android better in my opinion! (custom ROMs, themes, etc...)
The Sensation is not what you want. This device may fall under the category with the Droid X and the Atrix. There is barely any support for either device. I suggest you ride it out with the G2X because support and roms will come in a bundle sooner or later. The sensation is tempting but once you do your initial setup than what?

But seriously, I'm a gadget whore. If it's shiny I'm one of the first to own it. I can't use cooked ROMs because everyone I've used (and I've used some of the greats) leave me f-d trying to register on foreign networks. I agree with you up to a point about dev support for the Sensation. Keep in mind it's HTC's flagship phone and will be highly sought after worldwide (as will the SGS2). Based on its popularity, I'm guessing it'll get some dev love.

This is the feature that kept me on the g2x.
Also the extra ram and processer power that the sensation has is for sense ui to run smooth.
Cant wait until new kernels arrive that will make the tegra a crazy powerhouse. The phone has been out for about two weeks, give it some time for the devs to get a hold of it. The nexus s for the first 2 months had a really lame dev section.

No because the only reason the THunderbolt was unlocked was because of a leaked old ROM that wasn't locked down. Total luck.
I just came from an atrix and there is one dev cooking roms. (He has two). While they were both awesome its not a whole lot...we have more development here in two weeks then they had in 3 months. The atrix has more ram which is its only advantage....I always had like 700 mb ram available.....so for me the extra ram didn't benefit me. I was tempted to get the nexus s due to it being pure google but the fact that its a samsung phone (had alot of problems with galaxy s) and with dual core phones coming out I figured I would skip it. The g2x is what the nexus s should have shipped with. Dual core tegra.

Motorola was a big name in Android because of the $100MM in marketing they and Verizon spent to put Android on the map with the "Droid does" campaign. Once HTC and Samsung got with the program Motorola's market share has been steadily declining. They're also primarily a North American player where Samsung and HTC are global. Both the SGS2 and Sensation will each individually sell more units than the entire Motorola Android product line. Spec wise the Atrix is a good comparison but sales and acceptance wise not so much. I at least give them credit for going back to the drawing board on the Bionic rather than launching what would have been an already dated phone.
Assuming all future Samsung and HTC phones are based off the internals of the SGS2 and Sensation, the impact of what you're saying is devs are going to stop working on Samsung and HTC phones. I find that hard to accept. Especially when the SGS2 and Sensation (and their derivatives) are expected to sell in the millions of units. Only time will tell.

Hey guys,
As we all probably know, most of us are not happy with motorola's product the XT720 and some of us are stuck with it just because we paid so much for the phone. The locked bootloader and poor support are just a few reasons to hate moto.
I'm interested in knowing what your next device would most probably be when eventually you want to move on and ditch motorola. For me it'd most likely be either a google product or something from the samsung range. Unlocked boatloaders, great support and constant updates + powerful hardware. Please enlighten me!
too early for me to say for sure as i dont have plans to get anything new anytime soon, but: 1: not motorola 2: probably either a SE device as i love how they look and they seem sincere in their support for their devices or a nexus line. all subject to change of course
In October, I can get me a new mobile (I can extend my contract). If nothing better comes in, then I will choose one of the following devices:
-Motorola Atrix
-Motorola Milestone 3
-HP Pre 3 (yeah, WebOS fascinates me )

While we're considering other OSs I'm intrigued by the Nokia WP7 device. WP7 actually looks very attractive, smooth and fluid - I just worry I would get bored of it after a little bit to be honest. MS3? When it will be...
For me: new nexus from google... maybe.
As i can say: NO, NO,NO to htc and moto.
Everyone else.. maybe..
My contract is also expiring next month, so I'm looking for new handset already. So, what's in my mind???
1. Motorola Atrix
Ya, most of you will said no more Motocrap. I always like Moto's hardware quality. So, if and only if they unlock the bootloader and it is possible to install custom roms like CM7, then I would take it. (There is already a leaked rom with unlocked bootloader. Everything is working except it's just not official update)
2. LG Optimus Black
This slim and shady guy is very slim and light-weighted. And truly it is a hacker's phone. Nothing is locked down. opened booloader, open NAND, now CM7 is already on the way to this phone. The problem is, LG's hardware quality is crap. And I also have doubt that this one would qualify.
3. Samsung Galaxy S II
Like it very very much. It has been a dreamed phone for me recently. But it's a bit pricy. S$348 with 2 years contract @ Starhub. Unless they give me a $200 discount voucher, I won't buy this phone.
4. Google Nexus S
If the 3 above is not applicable, this guy will be mine. No SD slot but 16Gb of NAND drive is more than enough for me. Though one this is still bugging me, no HDMI output. hmmm
guys, let me hear your suggestion. which one shall I take?
Just checked out the ATRIX. Wow, lol I want one. Its uncanny how even after the XT720 motorola continues to seduce me...haha
Well I got the XT720 because of the Xenon flash.

if you like the galaxy s2 so much, you could always cross the border and buy it there, its only RM2099 (around SGD854) compared to SGD998, or wait for the cheaper galaxy Z (Tegra2/SLCD/5mp)..
Optimus Black and Nexus S is not in the same league as Atrix and SGS2, so those should not be compared directly..

The app cataloque on WebOS has about 4600 apps at the moment including Angry Birds. So yeah, not as much as Android yet, but it's definetly a lot and it will get more once the HP Touchpad comes out later this month
And lack of support? WebOS get updates every 6 weeks or so and upgrades when an upgrade is ready (most of the time, that is).
According to Koush on his G+ apparently the AT&T and Verizon S4 will be bootloader locked. Whilst the Verizon one probably will be the AT&T one would be a shock. I can't imagine this is true as the other galaxy devices on AT&T haven't been but I thought I'd let people know if this is the case I imagine it will be bypassed .
UPDATE: according to the engadget review they contacted Samsung who confirmed the s4 is bootloader locked. http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/24/samsung-galaxy-s-4-review/
UPDATE2: according to many sources one being Steve Kondik on he G+ the AT&T S4 is bootloader locked.

completely different than a htc. they are in no way locked the same way the htc unlock was basically a bypass of how htcdev worked. this will actually take hardware level scanning etc. and then finding an exploit somewhere in the bootloader or the pit

if the bootloader is locked you'll go to HTC Lololololol - you are aware that HTC locks all their bootloaders right?and if you wanna flash roms on the go you have to also s-off the device...otherwise you will need a computer for every Rom flash...or flashimagegui.apk if it supports your phone. And lately HTC s-off has required hardware tampering like my HTC vivid...you literally to short the phone while running a program with a wire...HTC is the worst android company (nice phones tho...) Im thinking about grabbing the GS4 on my other line, which I'm sure i will...I already bought a few cases for it.. But anyways, I currently have the HTC One and its unlocked and rooted and I can flash roms on the go. I can also flash international roms as they also work on the ATT HTC One with no issues. And for everyone that likes CM, it was posted on G+ that almost the entire CM team grabbed a HTC One.

And oh yea then there was my first android phone the g2x (I wonder why I almost forgot about that one) I got to say I love my note2 it kicks ass and it sounds funny but my favorite was the s2 I don't know why but I just love that phone. Right now I am using the s3 because I dropped my note2. Its a nice phone but just not as good as the others. Plus its a picky processor. Unfortunately I regret the fact that I will not be getting an s4 because I am going to be tied up medically for the next year or so by the time I am around there will probably be an s5 or note 3 or 4 if they even go that far with them. Or who knows maybe samsung will start a new flagship. Sorry to go off topic fellas

The S2 was a perfect phone for the time. It's also been my favorite Android phone ever...but hopefully the S4 takes that title soon.

Im thinking about grabbing the GS4 on my other line, which I'm sure i will...I already bought a few cases for it.. But anyways, I currently have the HTC One and its unlocked and rooted and I can flash roms on the go. I can also flash international roms as they also work on the ATT HTC One with no issues. And for everyone that likes CM, it was posted on G+ that almost the entire CM team grabbed a HTC One.

While yes Steve Kondik himself got the AT&T HTC One... He also said he's going to carry both the S4 and the One in his review of the One. That being said... HTC has pissed away their chances with me. The One in my humble opinion is fugly, and the thing feels like a cheap toy.. I'm way more impressed by the build quality of my Nexus 4 or Optimus G.. Also I love having the ability to swap out the battery something I've missed having sold my S3 as well as the fact it has an SD card slot.. But that's just my opinion..

Same here. I'm absolutely done with HTC as a company after the Raider.
Who'd have thought that my decision to go with them because of solidly built devices and a good out-of-box experience would go so awry? Here I come, crawling back to Samsung (had an SGS1 previously).

The Nexus One was a great device, and I loved it.. But I've been quite disappointed with HTC ever since.. I like to give every company a fair shot, The One X (international version) was the last straw for me.. To be completely honest.. IF the Sony Xperia Z or ZL had the snapdragon 600 chipset, I would most likely be getting one instead. I can't justify spending more on that device with an older chipset for more money off contract. S4 is $639 before taxes.. Though I do have a Premier acct, so I'm going to TRY to get them to give me the $100 discount as well.. Never hurts to ask, ended up getting my launch date S3 for $49.99 after they matched Best Buy, and gave me the premier discount.. It's all in whom you talk to...

Well thank god HTC finally has started to get the idea of what android is all about-great to know you no longer have to flash the boot.IMG separately
