I came from the droid incredible and with an edit to the services.jar file you could remove the throttling of your data once you reached your 5gb. Now that we have a temp root situation could we apply the same principle to this phone? I'm sure T-Mobile doesn't throttle each connection individually. It has to be software related.
This sounds interesting. I don't generally pass the 5gb, but not having to worry would be great.
Do you have the part that was modded before? Maybe somebody can get an idea from that.

Does Verizon really throttle on the phone side? Seems quite unreliable and insane to me.
I, of course, can't say for sure but I think it is pretty likely that T-Mobile US throttles data connections serverside, that is the only way for the carrier to achieve reliable slowdown of cell data.
On an unrelated note, just to make you guys envious: I used up 7 GB of cell data last month

Nope. Its software based. It'd take so much work to track me invidually while I constantly changed towers etc that all it does is change a little setting from unlimited to throttled once your phone reaches its own peak. They have a throttle remover to the G2X and G2 and the Vibrant so I know it can be done. It can be done by simply using root explorer to copy the modified services.jar over your existing upon reboot and reroot. The Services.jar is phone specific so I can't just copy any old one someone would need to mod the sensations.

Over on the mytouch 4g forums they have a service.jar mod. I can confirm it worked until I rebooted, then once my sim connected to the network again I was throttled... why idk others didn't I did, so it either works or don't work. But I do know over there they said to do it in recovery and mount system and adb push the modified service.jar into /system/framework/. And since we don't have a recovery I think its not possible yet. But I could be wrong.

Not to revive an old thread but I hit my 5gb cap and since we DO have root and custom recoveries and full access to the phone is there anyone working on this or does anyone know a workaround?
From what I know and working for a cell phone company...(at&t).for example in our company we also throttle the speed once 5GB mark hits....the billing system adds special SOC (service order code) and applies it to your account through the billing system... which is where it shows all your services and features .....(rate plans.....features...(data...messaging...ringback tones../etc...)...so my theory here would be that the throttle is not software based on your phone because I'm pretty sure that if anyone in here thinks they can actually remove a throttle code off the billing system through phones internal software would be a ridiculous thought....is anyone in here saying that they can remove a messaging..or data feature through software and manipulate the billing system of a cell company...from a cell phone registry???? I would love to see a demo of that if its possible for at&t? Since i guess tmobile seems to work a little diffdrent? Someone please enlighten me..???

Recieved a text from my wireless carrier stating that my tethering would be cut off or I can pay an additional $30 or so per month. I think it came down to me downloading the OS for an iphone 3gs I've been playing with. Last month I ended up with around 10gb of data usage.
Tried tethering after the deadline date and was directed to a site, stating I need to call customer service. I also tried using data on my phone at this point and was directed to the same site. Call customer service and was told to access their data I would need to give them my phones serial number. go figure.... after the past two years of playing with various phones, nexus one, vibrant, hd2, iphone 4, iphone 3gs, nexus s.... they want to know what Im using .....
Solution????
a different android phone again, with tethering.
or
drop my sim card into my iphone 3gs for a few hours and switch back to the mytouch 4g

Seeing as how you are getting the same site from the phone browser and the computer browser, it seems they just assume, not know you are tethering. The hold should go off after your billing month is up. If not, well do they know you have a smart phone, or are you using it on a feature phone plan? If it is the later, then giving them a smart phone serial will probably make them change your plan to a smart phone plan.
I heard if you use the stock tethering app they charge you... what if you use the one that's built into CM 7? isn't that the same as using android-wifi-teather? I was always unclear about that

Well for lite usage you won't have problem. But if you are using bandwidth excessively they will notice it and based on using DPI/SPI techniques they can determine which service and protocol is being used. They would never want people to use free bandwidth when they can get people to pay money for same exact thing. Talk about milking the cow for all its worth lol.
Before the mytouch I had a hd7 and before that the first 4g I had was the g2..download were massive and big..never got caught...I was always using the stock T-Mobile tether option..I guess cus I'm on an old unlimited android web plan...

Yes I do use the tethering hotpsot often for internet at home. I downloaded the app you recommend, will test it out for awhile to see if itll make a difference and still allow me to tether.
I'm having conflicting information put my way about tethering. Is T-Mobile charging for using the WiFi Tether feature in froyo, or are they charging for the Wired Tether feature.
I can't even get a straight answer from store reps or customer service. It's like they don't even know themselves.

I'm not with tmobile, I have been using android phones for over a year plus, starting with the nexus one. I have always been tethering and kept my data around 5-6gbs per month. Last month I hit the 11 or 12gb mark, and within the first week of the new month I was already up to 3.5gbs. Mainly from downloading the Iphone OS, and other tools I needed.
Over the past year, I never once was charged for tethering nor was I warned about it. You shouldn't need to worry about tethering with tmobile, if you hit the 5gb of data they will cut your speeds. I download the tethering app from the first page of this post, and it seems to be working fine as of now.

Technically it's not a lie. They do not limit the maximum amount of data you can use via the HSPA towers. However after 5Gb of data they throttle you back, as the person above me mentioned.
But it's not a lie, not a false advertising move, but it is very shady IMHO.

One of the few downfalls of T-Mo. I just use my Wifi at the house so i don't touch 5Gb when i use it [wifi] but it's nothing for me to rack up 8-12GB off of it.
I have a no contract T-Mobile plan and buy web day passes... I use over 5 gigs a day sometimes.. no differences in speed other than coverage
just curious, but what are you guys viewing/downloading that gets you to 5 gigs a day? That sounds crazy to me. Wouldn't WIFI be better for that anyway? Or a computer?

There is nothing you can do as they throttle you because technically they can and will sharp you traffic for heavy usage. As we discussed this long ago since 2004 we do have the technology in place to determine what you use your service based on the SPI/DPI capabilities on the server. At this point they just have QoS based policy in place which just changes your provision rate. Be thankful they are not disabling any service based on the user agent or injecting data stream on the transport layer.

I know alot of people that tether and do their DL'ing (Whatever it may be).
I recently signed up for an unlimited everything $79.99 plan, I noticed the "small print" now says 2GB of full 4G before throttling might begin.
I deleted the contents of the "throttle" folder and write protected it. Has anyone heard of this yet ?

i believe it was in the data/system folder (use root explorer, or the like).
You do understand that the soft-cap that is placed under account is throttling the provision rate of users from the server itself. As the data is not allocated in your device which would be subjected to alteration. Unless you mean a dir was created after you were placed on 128kbps.
A friend recommended it to me, is it a waste of time ?
Why is there a "throttle" folder ?

I see, I just checked the location and found the folder also. Now if it makes you feel any better I don't use more than 200mb/month and I also have it. As the throttle happens on TMo's server so yeah its a complete waste of time. But however you can change the APN setting thats all ill tell you as I won't actually give you the meth which can cause it to be shutdown and for few folks its work around. I tested it back in 5-6months ago as I downloaded like 2.1-2.2gb porno on and applied it and it worked.

okay ive always used xda as a source of information and i made a new account for this soul question. i have a rooted HTC Inspire running latest android revolution ROM i read that u dont have to pay for AT&T data usage with this ROM....well i have and i want to know if i can or cannot get free tethering wired or wifi i dont care without paying? i have a 200MB data cap on my plan and i need to know if there is a way around that if i can keep using the data w/o ATT knowing. im willing to do whatever it takes flashing another rom whatever so dont hold back on the android revolution rom alone your answers will all be a use to me and i thank u for helping me
I don't know about using data without at&t knowing, but you can tether with a rooted rom (which still uses data) without the at&t tether plan.

Popupstoppa was correct about the plan. You will be able to tether using Android Revolution, but no matter which rom you use, AT&T will definitely know how much data you have used during the month. If you are only on the 200mb plan, I would say forget about tethering. You will go over your limit in minutes.

Not to be the **** of this discussion, but do u really believe that there's a way to leech data without att knowing? Really? Getting away with free tethering is one thing, leeching data without them knowing on their own network with the ability to monitor traffic from each device is another. Common sense will tell you that, first of all, if there was a way, you would have read it by now, considering your claim of using xda

It's not likely the throttling is done at the phone, so it would make no difference if you're 100% stock or running a rooted, 3rd party ROM. They'll throttle you on the network side.

I suspect he said they don't throttle 4G connections. They may throttle a 4G device, when it's using the 3G network. You didn't give any details on when you think you were being throttled.
VZW should not be throttling any 4G connections, on bandwidth usage alone, per 47cfr27.16(c)(1):
The potential for excessive bandwidth demand alone shall not constitute grounds for denying, limiting or restricting access to the network.

But, if you've been tethering, or using bandwidth to the detriment of other users, they can.

But, if you've been tethering, or using bandwidth to the detriment of other users, they can.

What I was told by a Verizon rep was 4G phones were exempt from throttle or network enhancements as they call it even if the 4G phone is using 3G service.
I do tether on occasion but most of my data usage is from downloading roms on my phone and watching netflix again on the phone.
I do like the thunderbolt a lot but it was the exemption that made me upgrade. My data speeds were horrible on the incredible. YouTube and netflix would buffer and sometimes not even load because of the slow speeds. HBOgo would not even work because of that.

Gotcha. As I explained in my last post I was told by the Verizon rep I would not have a problem if I upgraded to a 4G phone.
I just wanted to find out if the rep knew what he was talking about or if it was a lie to sell me a new phone and sign another 2 year contract.

Yes they can throttle.
No you can't do anything about it.

Have you checked with Verizon to see if there is network issues?
Check another phone if you can... Maybe sim or phone is bad.... Just some suggestions
In my experience, the commonly used Speedtest app reports poor speeds. It also defaults to the closest test site which isn't always the best. I'm in SW Ohio and used a site in California and gotten 25+ Mb/s. TRY OTHER SITES, especially in larger cities.
Also, try http://speakeasy.net/speedtest using same rationale as above.
Remember, if you get 30Mb/s on one test and sub-10Mb/s on all others, you're *not* throttled.

I thought I was getting throttled, but it was just my bad connection. I get 25 down and 4 up through speakeasy.net

When I re-read that I figure some conspiracy theorists will say that VZW throttles people off and on !

Do you have files in a folder named 'throttle' at the following: data/system/throttle
If so, try deleting the files and remove the 'write' permission from the throttle folder. Reboot your phone, wait a few minutes and then make sure that no files were recreated in the 'throttle' folder. This helped me, but the results seem to vary from phone to phone.
You may want to try disabling Smithmicro and Verizon Backup, as there should be no need for either on a custom rom in my opinion.
I use the Liquid Nonsense rom, did a lot of research and tweaked my 'build.prop' file. While doing so, I found that the buffer sizes for LTE, Wifi, etc. are also listed in a file named 'init.rc' as well. By making sure that the buffer sizes listed in 'build.prop' matched the ones listed in 'init.rc' I have almost doubled my download and upload speeds.
I am not going to debate the pros/cons of these changes with folks, but for those willing to take the risk you may boost your connection speeds as well.

With such an intelligent and convincing response like that, should anyone believe *you* ?

Okay this requires you to have another IMEI number so if you have a Infuse you will need either a iPhone a BlackBerry or a LTE phone's IMEI number
Call AT&T tell them you need to update your IMEI # and update the Unlimited Data plan to the Unlimited Data plan for that phone. I used a Skyrocket IMEI for NY Infuse they took a few minutes updating it and once I got off the phone I went into Airplane mode and out of Airplane mode and had full speeds again.
Everytime you are throttled call back give them the old IMEI # and have them update the Data Plan again for full speeds!
No need to change your APN!
Hit Thanks if this helps you!

This is a SERIOUS security concern that the govt. doesn't deal with easy. IMEI numbers are used to track phones, esp when they want to point in on law breakers.
I would NOT suggest anyone doing this.
One reprieve is that you are not physically changing the IMEI of your device. But I am still unsure of how ethical this is.
Edit: Also, if I am not wrong, IMEI number is transmitted every time you place or receive a call.
Yes but if you own the phone

i told you all they slow you down by the device!
i was slowed down on my infuse, then i got my blackberry and my speeds where back to normal!
i guess i'll start carrying another device. root it and then just use tether hotspot when i get throttled.
I tried putting my sim into my buddies g-note and I was still throttled!

Yeah. And then you will get the email telling you to stop tethering and then if you don't you will be pushed through to the tethering plan.
Optimus, I think that bbs are different. There plans are weird. For instance, you can tether to a playbook and whatnot.

Just change IMEI's to another device of yours that has a different data plan as long as its a smart phone it'll fix it
Sent from my SGH-I997 using XDA App
The other issue to think about is that there are different data plans, even for the same level. For example, there is a $30 3GB smartphone 3G plan, $30 3GB iPhone plan, $30 3GB iPhone 4S plan, $30 3GB smartphone 4G plan, etc. They may all seem the same to you, but when your bill comes you could end up with pro-rated charges for each one.

Simple answer: Use the phone data plan as a phone data plan, and not as replacement to home internet.
Whatever you do, you'll get caught one way or other. And changing IMEI's can have really bad consequences, even if you own the other device. Just saying.

Nothing illegal about switching your SIM to another phone and having AT&T update their database with the correct data plan. The government couldn't care less about this since you're not cloning or changing the IMEI of the phones.
Thank you, this was just away I got my internet back to working condition after I used 2.3 GB's of Data...

So you work for a phone store? Hmm.. Do you have the phone that ATT (I asdumr) gives you. And that's hilarious. Tell him to put a fan over it, turn it sideways and take the battery cover off. It cools it down real fast. I had to take the battery cover off after watching an or so of the Mentlist.. . On my phone. Not tethering.

lol i only tether (Only to my Ps3) when my home internet which we paid about $60 a month (Xfinity Comcast) for isn't working.
