[Q] Restoring user settings after installing a new ROM - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hey guys,
I just installed CM7, which is awesome, but I'm wondering how everyone keeps up with the new nightly builds without spending an hour restoring their phone every day. Is there a way to backup everything about your phone - even your settings, shortcuts, widgets, etc. - and then restore those settings after you install a new ROM?
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

U don't need to wipe data between every nightlie, I only do that when going from cm7 to faux Rom or vice versa. Just wipe cache, dalvik cache, install zip, fix permissions , reboot.

You probably wanna flash gapps after the nightly, as well...or you won't have much fun.

+1 to this. You wont lose any of your installed apps or settings this way. If you've edited your build.prop file for Netflix then you'll have to do that after flashing a new nightly. And if you are using a custom kernel then you'll have to re-flash that after each new nightly.

between google backup and titanium i have pretty much everything restored in 10 minutes

what about using ROM manager?

All good ways, but I agree with the not doing a full wipe. But if you want to full wipe before each nightly another quick way to restore your apps is Android Commander, a pc program. Also, you do not have to do this:

after every nightly, you never have.

Nice
Worked perfectly! Thanks to all of you for the tips.

How?
I have to wait for market to download every app (including titanium). I can't figure out how to get titanium running without waiting for it to get downloaded from market in some random order.
Thanks.

Stuck in boot loop every time I flash a rom

I've flashed a few roms now (masters stock rooted voodoo versions of nexus s firmware) and every time I do the boot logo just keeps on going until I do a battery pull and reboot, and then it's ok.
It's not a problem, I just wondered why this happens??
did you wipe dalvik, factory settings, cache?
did you change the kernel?

No. These roms don't wipe anything and I don't want to lose my stuff. I don't think you are meant to wipe with them either.

I was asking if YOU did wipe them because if you're going from one ROM to the other ROM you are supposed to wipe.
You lose your settings and apps. Back them up using Titanium Backup (Or any other related app).
Or.. better yet, just perform a nandroid backup. After that, wipe those 3 and reboot. See if the problem is resolved, if it is then you already know. If not then nandroid restore.
If you're going from one ROM to a completely different ROM made by someone else, you have to wipe data/factory settings!
If you're flashing an updated version of the current rom you're using, wipe cache/dalvik-cache.
If you're flashing different roms every other day, go buy Titanium Backup to backup your apps/settings.
And uh what ROM are u flashing where "you're not meant to wipe"

I am new to this so I'm still getting my head around it.
From stock I went to the rooted voodoo version of this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=971690.
From there I went to the stock rooted version of this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979851
In both cases it says:
Rom Information:
Does it wipe: No
Does it flash the radio: Yes
So since they don't wipe, I assumed I shouldn't wipe anything, but it looks like I was wrong. From your post it looks like I should have wiped the cache and dalvik cache. I know how to do this in CW but I've never done it and my roms are working fine.
So next time master releases an update I gather I should wipe cache and dalvik cache yeah?
Also, when I do this will it remove any of my settings or apps?
Hope you can answer these questions, and thanks for advice so far.
<<edit>>
Just did a bit of googling and it looks like you don't lose settings when you wipe dalvik cache and cache, so what does actually get removed.
There is a thread stickied in development called ref roms themes and kernels. It gives step by step directions on how to flash all three including what should be wiped. Check it out

because its saying that the ROM doesn't wipe. Some ROMs are built in a way so that it automatically wipes your phone to ensure best performance. The creator is just saying that it doesn't do that BUT you need to wipe. The keyword does and need are two different things. The basic concept between going from 1 ROM to another (unless its the same ROM series) requires a wipe in all three: dalvik, cache, factory. If you're going from the same ROM to a newer version and encounter bugs, its best if you wipe.
I'm a more advanced user when it comes to Android since the first Android phone. I know what I'm talking about. When you go from stock ROM to another, its going to have bugs if you don't wipe.
If you're using Axura 1.1.1.0 and its fine, and he releases a new version. You can flash without wiping (but you can wipe cache & dalvik to be safe; none of your settings will be wiped). Wiping factory settings is the only one that will wipe your settings / apps.
If you're going to be a flasher, its best if you purchase Titanium Backup Pro (or MyBackup.. but I highly recommend Titanium Backup). Use this program and it will save all of your apps + settings to them. Just don't use it to save SYSTEM apps/files because it will cause FCs.
Dalvik Cache / Cache.. its nothing you need to know in particular. It's just removing cache that your phone set up to increase speeds. It just wipes them and gets the Android system to re-establish them. So no caches from the previous ROM will carry over onto the new one.
EDIT: n/m..............

That is a very helpful post and clears a lot up. Many thanks. Looks like I had better do it again and do it right this time.
I've got titanium backup. Bought it after I rooted, but never restored with it yet. Also, thanks for the info about no saving system files with it, as I currently do have it setup to backup all user apps and system data, so I will have to change that. I gather I should just change it to all user apps??

Backup all user apps is the one you want to do. You can backup bookmarks using Google sync or a app known as BookmarkSB
If you have system apps backed up, delete all backups using batch and reapply user app backup

Thanks for your help. I reflashed the rom and I did it properly this time. Had a bit of a problem with TB restore as I'm a noob but Joel from TB answered an email I sent him very quickly and I got it sorted (thanks joel).
How long does it take to flash a rom once you get good at it? Took me a while tonight because of mistakes.

[Q] need suggestions on fixing FC's

for some reason the last 3 apps i've installed all FC on me. at least 2 were from the market. prior to this i've installed a ton of apps from the market and TB.
open maps, movies, yelp.
i managed to install yelp after i uninstalled movies. not sure why that mattered. i actually got the FC message but then it went away. movies still didn't install correctly. i've completely removed open maps.
i've heard fixing permissions in cwr can work but i've screwed up my phone on a prior rom doing that so i'm really weary of using it. also, why would i need to fix permissions if it's a new install?
Update: fixing permissions did nothing. Does clearing dalvik do anything?

Clear cache and dalvik and try again. If you still have problems, then reflash your ROM on top of your existing ROM without wiping anything. If you still have problems after doing this, then backup your apps/app data with Titanium and then do a full wipe (system, data, cache; everything). Then reinstall your ROM, then install Titanium and restore your apps (do not restore system settings; only restore apps and app data).

[Q] Plague Inc has no properties or permissions, force closes

I upgraded to 4.2 liquidsmooth rom and everything works fine except for Plague Inc, which is like the only game I play.. I've tried several uninstall-reboot-reinstall and every time the .apk has blank properties and no permissions, can't set any either. I downloaded an old version of the game and fortunately that .apk shows properties and permissions but it still FC's upon launch
this is pissing me off and I have no clue what to do, anyone have any suggestions?
how did you install it originally? Are you moving it to SD card? I would uninstall wipe dalvik and reboot. then install from market. Not titanium
do a reboot before you restore data only from titanium.
Love that game By the way

I've been downloading it from the market originally.. wiping dalvik made the properties/permissions show up but the app still stops upon launch
I haven't restored any data at all
I've googled everything I can think of and read some stuff on here and other sites about the game not working well with 4.2.. who knows

It sounds more like a ROM problem rather than a 4.2.x problem. Is this the only game that is FCing? You've said you have been installing it from the market. Have you tried restoring it from titanium or possibly extracting the app or app and data from a nandroid backup?

just wanted to update this.. I finally got the app working after flashing a nightly cm10.1 build and restoring with titanium

Is this the right procedure to flash/update a ROM?

Hi guys,
I've got a Nexus 4 running PA 3.50 and I would like to update this ROM.
I've downloaded the latest PA mako 3.65 and GApps from Goo.Manager
I've done a "update.zip" (apps and data) backup with Titanium BackUp PRO and now I am going to flash the new update of the rom.
Is that right to:
- go to recovery
- wipe cache and dalvik cache
- install PA 3.65 and GApps
- flash update.zip
- wipe cache and dalvik cache
- reboot
Am I loosing anything? I mean, ROM settings, sms, whatsapp conversations and stuff like those?
Thanks in advance

Thanx for the tip dude, I've watched the video and looked for guide on XDA and Google about updating a rom flashing the backups but I didn't find any...
Well...actually I've found tons of them and I'm pretty confused. That's why I decided to post here.
In the video you posted it says to do a Full Wipe, but maybe it's because he's flashing a different om, right?
Maybe I can skip the process and wiping cache instead, 'cause I'm just uploading it.
Cheers
If its just a small update, yes you can just wipe cache and dalvik, but if its a full update/rom,then you need to do a full wipe, also to make sure and check the developers notes to see what he/she suggests.

May I ask another question?
What about restoring data? I mean, if I backup with Titanium PRO, creating the update.zip file (containing both apps and data files) are there possibilities to get problems on system datas?
'cause I read that system app backups can create conflicts. Is that right?

It's possible but unlikely when flashing only a small update.
Backup and only the app data and download the apps again to be safe.

Oks, so...I am downloading the latest GApps and then do the procedure.
- Wiping cache and dalvik cache
- Wiping factory reset
- Flashing the update of the PA 3+ ROM
- Flashing the GApps
- Rebooting
- Setting up the phone as I did the first time I've booted it
- Installing Titanium BackUp PRO from the Market
- Restoring App+Data ONLY for the green and white colored ones
- Having fun with the updated ROM
So, this is the shortest/best process to flash an update of an existing rom...:good:
I let you know guys.
How did you make out. I use team win it makes it so simple also usually on fire page is where the developer of the rom shows you what to do.

Everything went great!
Well actually at the first flashing of some GApps GooManager downloaded me I got errors just after the boot, but I went to recovery and flashed another GApps I'd downloaded using PA Updater.
So, with Titanium BackUp I simply restored everything...and now my phone has the brand new ROM, but everything with every setting as it was before! :good:

This is a tweaked versions of CARBON-JB-UNOFFICIAL-B11 so all credit goes to killersloth for the ROM. Without his work this ROM wouldn't be possible. So if you like this ROM please go to the CARBON ROM thread and click the "Thanks" button.
Changes Made:
Replaced Trebuchet launcher with Nova launcher.
Replaced stock gallery with Sony Z Album and Movie app (Facebook & Twitter integration working.)
Added Sony Z Walkman app with UPNP/DLNA Media Server.
Replaced the default kernel with the kernel from CM10.1 Stable by verygreen.
Added BeatsAudio+xLoud+ClearAudio for audio effects and ViPER4Android for the sound engine. Settings I am using.
Added Mobile BRAVIA® Engine for improved video processing.
Modified Adobe Flash 11.1 with Hulu support.
Host level ad blocking. If you are having issues with adblocking see attachments to remove it.
Forced all rendering to be done on the GPU. Should help with gaming and make things more smoother. To help improve performance even further see this post.
GoogleEars.
Kick Ass Kernelizer
Auto-zipalign and defragdb on boot
Auto Calibration on boot. Only does a few programs each boot. So may take a few reboots to calibrate all of them.
Plus many improvements taken from this thread.
I also added some terminal commands.
Run each command with SU first then the command.
fixfc - Fix apps force closing.
sclean - Clean the dalvik cache and cache partition
v6 - run the V6 SuperCharger script. I would run this as soon as the ROM is setup..
Know bugs
Not a bug as such but something you should be aware of. It does take a few reboots to optimise all the apps.
V4A XHiFi may do a hot reboot when first getting root, same with Root Browser. This will only happen once and will work fine afterwards. This is only normally an issue if you try getting ROOT on first boot. On the second reboot this doesn't happen.
Wifi will turn off then back on while it is setting up wl1271-nvs.bin. Once the file is created Wifi shouldn't disconnect.
Any more issues please report them.

If you would like to use the WALKMAN app from the Sony Xperia Z Ultra you can do so by flashing this: Xperia-Ultra_WALKMAN_SemcMusic.zip. Make sure you boot into the ROM before flashing. If you flash this without booting into the ROM first it will not work.
Most of the features in the Sony Xperia Z Ultra WALKMAN are working but "Music Unlimited" service isn't.
Thank you, I will give it a try.

And how do you flash the scrips? Just like any other zip file? Can it be done when installing this ROM ?

Just installed with full wipe restoring apps and data from TB. So far everything is ok.
Feels slightly less laggy than B9.
Dunno about battery life yet.
This is working great for me.
I did a dirty flash over RootBox and it's really nice.
Been the best rom for me on my Nook so far. Pinguy1982, please keep the thread updated mate.
Only issue I had was my usual
Android.process.acore has stopped
Which I resolved by following the text below. (cribbed from somewhere on the net)
If you go to Settings/Applications/Manage Applications/ then choose the All tab. Scroll down to Contacts open it and clear the data cache. Now do the same again but this time open Contact Storage and also clear the data cache. This issue is related to an Android bug and affects many devices. It's related to apps that use the sync function.
Works for me.
Cheers all

I agree completely and would urge the poster to revise his comment or certainly remove the subject. Way too hasty and unfair to make such a quick judgment certainly in the absence of a full or data wipe.

Dude it's all cool. But I have changed a fair bit to the ROM so just installing over it probably won't work. I have made drastic changes to how dalvik works so using pre-installed apps from a previous install probably won't work.

Apps no, dalvik cache maybe. Restoring apps settings and the apps won't be a problem, but using the dalvik cache might be.
The cache is in /data/dalvik-cache. Using that maybe an issue.

Definitely like this ROM, it is faster and smoother than any other I tried for my Nook, seems quite stable as well (no random reboots etc.)
