[Q] Help Radio Dump - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello community !
i have a problem that on my SD card i see RADIO DUMP files
from what i have read it means my modem crashes sometimes is that true?
i have MIUI rom running all is working well except these weird dump files that get created from time to time.
as far as i understood i need to flash a different modem if i got it right that will solve the problem?
the thing is i have no idea wich modem i need where i should download it and how to install it
for example i have a Galaxy S also running Miui and i flashed a Modem called JV4 wich is recommended for Orange Israel strait from recovery.
can i use the same file on my nexus s ?
if not could some one please point me for the right modem for me for Orange Israel
and is installation simply from recovery too (install zip from sd) ?
thnx allot in advanced i sure hope the solution for this is easy

theres no fix to it. its just completely random, you're more than free to delete the files.
but yeah, if you want.. you can flash other radios (its not modems) via flashable zips using clockwork recovery. refer to the android dev forums for the RADIO thread and download the radios corresponding to your phone model
you can verify your current radio by going to menu -> about phone -> look for baseband version

hey thnx allot for the quick replay
is the radio has to do something with signal and stuff ?
and when u mean random u mean like its not a problem at all ?
and basiclly flashing a new radio wont solve the issue of the dump files ?
im gonna head over and check wich radio suits me
ive searched for the radio thread but theres so many of them hehe im lost
ok so i found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116884&highlight=Radio
but it does not say wich radio is for what area

Yes it does. Find out what model of nexus s you have and download a radio corresponding to your model. You can check your baseband (radio) as I listed before. Reread what I said previously. Everything you need to know is in there.
Or you can just delete the dumps, they're nothing.
I used to get a lot when I fest got the phone and then try mysteriously stopped showing up.

I don't understand what you're asking for.
The DUMPS being dumped into your sdcard are GARBAGE. They happen MYSTERIOUSLY. just delete them. Is there a fix? No. Do we know why that happen? Not 100%, if you want to really find out. Use the search feature and find it. There is a thread about radio dumps in the past, you might find something there. But my solution is to just delete it. It'll happen again but it's not like its going to use up all the space on your phone.
Updating the radio will not help anything. Is there a chance it could? It's possible. But the main reason why you update the radio is to see if it improves your signals. The latest version doesn't necessarily mean its better. It varies between location.
If you have I9020T... download the ones for that. These radios are not based on location, they are based on your PHONE MODEL. It is a global radio and doesn't matter. As long as its respective to the phone model that you have, you're fine. You're making it more complicated than what it really is.

These radios are not based on location, they are based on your PHONE MODEL. It is a global radio and doesn't matter
NOW that makes everything more clear to me !!!
in galaxy s when i had radio dumps i changed radio and it helped this is why i asked for a different radio
but since u said there is really no use of changing a radio and it wont stop the dumps on the nexus s unlike the galaxy so i wont even bother flashing a different one
thnx u so so much for all your help and for making everything clear to me on how it works
thnx !

The only use of changing the radios is to see which of them gives you the best result. If you're that bored, you could go through each of them and see which gives you the best performance. I personally use KB3. KD1 has a bug where it says "3G" instead of "H" at various times and it bugs me.
You're welcome.

well as u said since those dumps wont go even if i flash a different radio then Fu$#*)( it
i dont really feel any poor signal in wifi 3g phone reception etc...
thnx again for everything it works different with the nexus s and galaxy s the radio thingy so now all cleared for me
im not that bored to start checking heheh you answered me perfectly now that i got it

Question about roms on wiki

Hi, I'm absolutely a noob in flashing rom but in these day I'm reading a lot about it while I wait to recive my at&t tilt.
I would like to put in it an original htc rom and I found a couple of those in the wiki. I also read to pay attention to the "radio version" (I still don't get what radio is though) so here is my question: does "3.03.405.0 (Radio 1.64.06.04) updated original WWE" in this page already include the correct radio version? in other words: is it ready to be flashed into a tilt as it is?
any advice is appreciated, thanks

A Radio is the Firmware for accessing the Cell networks, GPS, some sound/camera drivers etc.
Only certain radios are compatable with certain ROMs.
I can't speak for the ROM you suggested but it looks like it includes a Radio. You can check after flashing by looking on the boot screen, there are 3 version numbers, radio is the one next to R:.
If it isnt the correct version just flash a new radio like you flashed your ROM.

Kaiser stuck on custom ROM, cannot update ROM or Radio, Tried EVERYTHING!

Hi, I have a Tilt with PDA Corner Ultimate V.10,
Hard SPL 3.29,
and radio 1.27.14.09 (AT&T Stock)
The radio is causing the phone to have no sound, but everything else works fine. I know this problem is common, but I have tried everything within my ability and cannot get it to flash to any other ROM or radio.
When flashing a new ROM or radio, it shows the current version and update version, but never gets past 0% without a 262 error
I have tried all of the solutions I found posted on the forum, (Jump SPL, MTTY, EVERYTHING) trust me i've searched and read and searched more, I am not a newb to this although my post count is low.
Is there anyone with this particular problem on this particular ROM/radio combination that can help me out?

Maybe this is another one of those 'Radios from Hell' that won't let you upgrade. Note this quote from Ultimate Radio Thread:

A clear advice to all is: always make sure you have HardSPL installed and your device is security unlocked before installing a new radio !!
Also, maybe something in this thread will help you...

Thanx for your quick reply. I was thinking along the same lines, but I installed HardSPL just fine and flashed to the PDA corner ROM with no problem, the problem arose when I figured out that the radio was causing the phone to have no sound and wanted to update it..which of course did not work. Right now I am trying the stock ROM with the same radio to see if it will allow me to flash it...

That's why I'm thinking you may have flashed a 'Radio from Hell' which is preventing any further ROM updates. Maybe something in the RFH thread I linked to can help...
Good luck!
Ok, this is a radio from hell, i found some information on it stating that when it is used with any other ROM, sound will not function. Now I am trying to revert back to the orignial ROM but I have a new problem, I cannot find the original rom for this phone (AT&T aku 0.4.4 build 18128 radio 1.27.14.09) in working condition. There is only one link to it and the file is corrupted(rapidshare). is there anyone with this operating system that could send me a link that is NOT the one posted on XDA: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=341886). Thanx to drtolson, and thanx in advance to anyone else who is brave enough to get involved.
(Drtolson, I want to try the techniques on the post you sent a link to, but it states that the steps only work with that particular radio and others have not had any success using it with any other radios.)

Ok, i re-downloaded the file and it worked and also successfully flashed back to the original ROM, I probably won't be able to flash it to another custom ROM but at least the sound is working and the phone is fully functional. THANX TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP!

You can download and flash all the roms you want, you'll never change your radio that way because...
Custom roms flashable through clockwork recovery, nearly every one in the dev section, don't include the radio. The couple you will find will be an ruu type PD98IMG.zip, and will tell you if the radio is included and you'd have to flash through hboot.
When you rooted your phone, that's the type of ROM that was flashed.
Go to the inspire only radio thread, here, and read-up good before you start messing with radios.
Do the research first, and you'll be better prepared for some of the quirks of radio flashing. There's a lot of factors that can impact radio performance. The above thread covers the key concepts well. There's also knowledge to be had amongst the comments.
Good luck.

Best ROM For My Radio?

OK, so I figured out all my problems and such and flashed the second Radio in the stickied radio thread. I flashed the gingerbeast ROM and now I'm getting no service, so I'm just wondering what rom is the most stable for my current radio/ril?
Before you get slammed by anyone or scolded by the moderators, I will make a suggestion. You need to cut back on opening a new thread for every single question that you have. You can ask all of your questions in the first thread you opened. All of these answers have been posted throughout the forum. As far as Gingerbeast is concerned, it is a very stable rom. Reboot you phone and check your settings. If you are on the correct radio and Ril then you should be fine. Check the area you are in also. Asking what rom is the best or most stable will only get you a very subjective answer since everyone has different opinions on what they like.

Sorry, It's just i really want to get my phone working well as I've been messing with it for a while now.
Also what is the best radio for the Virtuous ROM if you know
I understand where you are coming from. I am just giving you advice that you should heed. As far as radio and Ril combo's go, what works well for one individual may not work as well for another. You will have to test it out for at least a week to measure performance differences. For VU rom I have personally had good success with two different radio Ril combo's. You can use the ATT OTA 6.30 radio and .79 Ril, or you can also try the 12.54.60.25x_26.09.04.11_M2 radio and you will not have to flash the Ril for that one because it is already included in the VU rom.

Thanks, right now I'm using the OTA Radio and .79 Ril and it's OK, is there any program to test how well the performance is with each combo?
EDIT: Also am I always going to have ****tier connection than before I rooted because right now with the wifi on i only get 1 bar with no H+, G, E next to it.
You can install and use the attached program on your phone, created by ZikyHD, to easily check your radio and Ril information. As far as testing performance, you will have to see real world usage and you can also use a program like Speedtest.net to check speeds. Remember though that speeds will vary depending on the time of day, your location, and what server you are testing from. Also know that after installing a new radio and Ril combination you should wait to let the radio and rom settle for a few days before trying to check performance.

I just flashed a new Radio and Ril today so could that be why my service is acting weird?
It is possible. Another thing to remember is that when you flash new roms your radio will not change, but your Ril file might change. The Ril's are included in the roms, so it is always a good idea to check and make sure your have a matching combination. Whenever you flash a Ril through CWM remember to mount system first before you flash the file. Follow the instructions in the radio thread and always check the MD5 sums to make sure your downloaded file is not corrupt.

So if the Ril is changed should I just flash the one I had before? Also how do you check the MD5 sums, I think you can do it through Astro File Manager if I'm correct.
EDIT: Yup the Ril was changed to 0131HM, should I see if the pair works together or just flash the matching Ril?
It is recommended to use the matched radio and Ril combination. I have attached a program that you can run on a Windows computer to easily check MD5 sums. Just paste the MD5 code into the program and then browse and select the matching file. It will compare the codes and let you know if they match. If they do then it is a good download. If not then obviously download the file again. It is also good practice to check roms to make sure the file is intact.

If you have the time, maybe try a few different radio/ril combos. I don't intend to contradict anyone but in my experience I don't always get the best signal strength, battery life, and data speed with the recommended radio/ril.

Agreed it has long been known that the radio is area dependent. The radio that works for me might not give you the best signal. A search would have told you this. Please use the search function before opening a new thread. Thread closed

Radio download links?

Hey all, I'm sorry if this seems an odd question, but I'm still trying to get my head wrapped around the process of how the One S gets different features flashed to the device.
I don't have my One S yet (Hopefully it'll arrive later today, 7/27) but I wanted to be prepared when it arrives.
It seems the links are broken in this post and it's stating that this thread is outdated.
If I'm going to flash a new ROM on the device, are the radios generally included in that ROM already? I see that you often times need to manually flash BOOT.IMG on a per-ROM basis due to not having s-off? I'm comfortable with all of that, I just want to make sure that I'm not missing anything, and unfortunately it seems as though there is little information in some of the threads on XDA that clearly answer my question.
Call it a personality defect, I just like to 100% understand something in every possible way before being able to attempt it. Unfortunately when I don't have the device in front of me, it prevents me from being able to do that, but that's what forums are for, right?
Cheers all, I appreciate anyone taking the time to answer my question.

The latest radio with android 4.0.4 rom is said to be much better in terms of performace of wifi and cellular data signal then all previous versions, unfortunately buying a phone at this stage means that you probably will have a later hboot version 1.13 and this hboot doesnt allow flashing radio from recovery like the previous versions. You can find out more info about the radio in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781033
To answer your other question the radio has to be flashed separately from the ROM. Hopefully your phone comes with a lower hboot so flashing wont be a problem, make sure you dont accept the ota update out of the box like i did so u dont accidently get an upgraded hboot. Makes life more diificult ;p.
Its a used phone and is already running CM9, so I'm hoping its the older boot. I already made sure it was the S4, but I just realized that the unlocked phones don't support TMOUS bands, so I'm a bit screwed at the moment.
I don't know what the next step is for me, so I may be forced to move to Straight Talk until I can get another 100% compatible TMOUS phone. I saw it has 2100 HSPA radio frequencies so I had assumed it would work on TMOUS. Needless to say I feel pretty stupid now.
Thanks again for the links, they were exactly what I was looking for!

If you want to get this new radio, the only way to do it at this moment is to change to SuperCID and follow the steps from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781033
