No. Mines fine.
You're pushing it too hard.
Seriously, though, there's been a couple people that I've seen who report similar issues with either the power button or the volume rocker.
The part below the button that gives it spring/tension has probably shifted somewhat, causing it to "sink."
Aside from opening it/exchanging the phone, there's not much you can do.

It just seems that the button is flush with the housing. Im just worried that the it won't work in the future and I won't be able to bring the phone out of the locked screen

Unlikely. You'll probably still be able to push it, though it may get harder to do over time.
I doubt that the actual button that's soldered onto the PCB is out, its just that the visible button that the user pushes, that actually pushes on the little button that's soldered onto the PCB, is out of alignment/lost tension.
If it concerns you then you should get take it back for a replacement. Or open the phone and inspect it yourself, but that will void your warranty, so...

Are there any ROMs that allow the volume rocker to wake the phone up?
My friend has a Thunderbolt and I saw that the ROM he uses allows for this.

CyanogenMod 7.1 or one of the recent nightly builds.
Edit: Or any ROMs based on a recent CM7 build (such as Ninja-07061).

You can download an app called no lock. But ur phone has to be rooted

I use Widgetlocker which can be set to wake with any hardware button. It costs a few bucks but allows you to use any non sense widget on your lockscreen.

Incorrect. No lock does not require the phone to be rooted.

Alternative to a battery pull for rebooting Nexus?

I'm tired of having to take the case off and pry the battery cover off in order to yank the battery for a reboot! Is there anything else I can do when the phone locks up? Some sort of Ctrl + Alt + Del or anything? This tends to happen when messing with overclocking/undervolting.
I'd also like to know. Nexus One has the three-button salute (as it was affectionately called), which was power, volume down and trackball simultaneously. Does the Nexus S have a similar method?
with the screen on hold down the power button. Not sure that is what you were looking for. Its only a shutdown not a rebbot.
We're looking for something you can do even if the screen won't turn on or if the phone is frozen at some point. Not a standard shutdown/reboot with the power button.
There isn't another way, unfortunately. If it is frozen you have to do a battery pull.

if frozen, just a battery pull. if not, theres a reboot widget(that i used on my nexus one when the power button died and still use on the ns). if you have root, you can type reboot or reboot recovery in the terminal emulator app.
That's interesting...so only HTC handsets have a "secret" reboot key combination? Every one of their phones has a three key combination that reboots the phone, which is clutch when it's locked up or otherwise messed up. Shame Samsung didn't do something similar.

The HTC Evo had/has no such key combination to reboot while on.

The Epic had one as well. Shame the Nexus doesn't, but sometimes it can be more annoying then useful. I feel you though it's annoying to take the case off, but thats why I just dropped CM7 and went back to the stock ROM... no more freezes
HTC Dream had one as well (call, end call, and menu at once). The three finger salute
Phones with at least 3 hard keys can do that. If NS volume buttons were separate they'd probably include it in.

The galaxy S series is the same setup and had a shut off key. It was to hold the power button down and the phone would shut down even if it is frozen

Replace the battery cover, which is the entire back. It might be that the "button" isn't making contact properly.
Remove the entire back cover, and where the "button" should be, press down on it with your finger.
Do a battery pull and then try it.
I don't think it's anything to do with the phone, it was doing the same thing on mine. I had to pull the battery numerous times a day.
Until I flashed a rom with a stock kernel, and now it's fine again!

First off, what chris is trying to say is, that when in Recovery menu, you can use the capacitive buttons infront of the phone to move down and up and also select items in recovery menu. The search button can be used to select items that you would select with the power button.
Ugh..nightmares of the problems I had with my n1's
the phone is gone... thank youu everyone for your advice. when the power button stopped working first thing i did was take the case off and try with my hand still to no avail. so back to tmo it went

Broken power button

The button dosnt work it seems to click normal and I did not drop it or anything else to make it stop working right. So my question is: does it have anything to do with the rom im running (cm7 nightly 179) or is there anyway to make another button take over the action of screen off/on?

well volume on widget off is working but it is incredibly annoying to not have a power button. has this happened to anyone or is there any write up on fixing a button? or any solution for my button?
thanks!
I had the same issue. Used the app in this thread to remap the power button to volume keys. Then changed the power button in the app to "focus" to disable it. This app modifies the build.prop file so you only have to do this once or after each rom flash.

Have same problem, it really pisses me off. One day it works fine, the next day, nothing changes and it doesn't work at all. The button clicks fine, it has a case and has been well taken care of, and still for some reason the most important button breaks.
If anyone has had the same problem and found a remedy please let us know.

I think you should find a way back to stock and test it. I had a bad power button and regardless of the rom they do fail. Get it back to stock, and if you can do a warrenty claim

I am surprised by how many Captivates have this problem. Once it fails with your phone off, you may never be able to get it to turn on !!!
I had cognition 4.5 installed and i was at work sending a text where all of a sudden my sister screen shut off and I heard the locking click sound. I hit the power button and it was locked. I unlocked it and it did it again. And it got worse and worse till the power button stopped functioning altogether. Getting back to stock was a pain as to get into download mode typically requires holding power, after hours of googling someone on these forums suggested using adb and a gui. I was able to reboot into download and use hemdale to get back to stock, and i was off to an AT & T warrenty exchange center to get a new phone. It seems to be a common problem amongst all android phones, as I have a friend who used to have a droid incredible, and upgraded to a droid bionic because his power button died.

you don't need a power button at all to get into download mode. or adb, or gui.
The power button is replaceable on the board if you are highly skilled with removal and re installation (it's soldered in place).
If you have questions about replacing it...PM me.
My power button acts kinda flakey at times, but then works fine for a long time.
My power button is all good now, been using this cappy since October, rooted, cyanogenmod 7.1, it's like a new phone. But I'm about 2 weeks away from the 90 day refurbished warrenty running out, hope nothing breaks on it again

Pretty sure default has always been power+home. Power down doesn't do jack for me....well, it turns off my screen after my phone goes to vibrate.
Learn something new every day...
[POWER] + [HOME] on stock 1.85.
Power + down is the stock ICS way of doing it and it works...sorta. You have to get the timing right or else it'll just turn off your screen, bring your power menu up, or mess with your volume.
Power + Home is just so much easier though...

Also, I wish it'd get taken out of the power menu. Don't need 3 ways to take a screen shot.

And nobody says there is anything wrong with that!
I was just pointing out the fact that HTC has included this feature since before Google decided to incorporate it in ICS.
Also, its interesting that HTC decided to include both their own method, and the Google way. HTC typically seems to prefer their own way of doing things, and removing the more "AOSP-ish" components.

Holding power and volume down at the same time is native to ICS and will save the screenshot to
/mnt/sdcard/pictures/screenshots
if I'm not mistaken. The One X can also take screenshots via home and power button. This will save the screenshot into a new folder DCIM or just drop them into /camera. I cant remember.

I hate the volume down+home, lol. When I hold the phone in my left hand and go to press home with my thumb it sometimes takes a screenshot.
On a random note, I feel like the HOX and a lot of other phones are easy to use one handed. I have slightly larger than average hands, but people should just put their pinky right under the home key on the edge if they need to. ANYWAY

Hardware gurus: do you think this app is fine for our SR ?

My question is about this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...e&utm_medium=organic&utm_term=tap+tap+tap+app
It uses the proximity sensor to unlock the screen (so saving the power button) but I'm concern that it would probably over load the sensor over time from continuously being on ... What do you think ?
Seems like a waste of time unless your power button is broken.

I've seen other people use it before. Works well enough I suppose, however there are also ways unlock your phone using the soft keys.

How ?
It has been programmed into a few of our ROMS, so check the development section, and you can also find multiple apps that will do it however I would steer away from ones that use the proximity sensor or anything else other than the soft keys as you're probably looking at a pretty hefty battery drain.
Edit: just checked my current ROM (CM9) and it has it under lock screen settings.

Mahann! My apologies mate! I completely misread what you wanted!
Ok, I did have a way to WAKE my phone on my old og droid with the volume rocker.
However the only thing I know of that can wake your phone is an app where you shake your phone to wake it.
You can find it in the play store.
