Trying to root my thunderbolt and have usb debugging on, unknown devices checked and tried stay awake. Tried all usb ports and it charges etc. Tired different cables but when I try root commands it doesnt recognize the device.
Did you try toggling debugging?

i believe that the internet pass through option has to be selected. allow drivers to update/sync. then disk drive again.
Got it worked out thanks.

I'm trying to unlock my dads old Captivate, but I need to connect it to the computer to do this. No matter what I do, this phone will not connect or be recognized by the computer. I plug it into the computer and it makes the little beep it makes when you connect, but thats it. No "USB Connected" on the top bar or anything.
I can connect my captivate fine, its just his. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and that wont work. Any ideas?
Do you have the drivers installed?
Sent from my SGH-I897
Ye, the drivers are installed. Would it be a driver problem though if my one captivate works, but the other? That sounds like a phone problem to me.
Settings> applications>usb(something or other)> mass storage.
Also make sure usb debugging is enabled...
The froyo settings might be different...the usb options could be in "wireless and network" instead of applications.

Nope, that doesnt work either. Its like its not even connected. Nothing showing up on my computer, nothing on the phone. The only thing that shows up when you plug it in is the charger icon comes on to let you know its charging.
i would recommend that you try another computer if that doesn't work, restore your phone to factory and if that doesn't work then you have two out of three possibilities that might lol, be seriously i think its not a drivers issue if the other phone is working. It might be a problem with the computer recognizing the port i really cant think of anything else..

If it's not connecting to either captivate it's a driver issue. Make sure that USB debugging is on and that under the application usb setting you have it set to ask on connect. Try a different usb port on the pc, or another cable. I had a bad cable a while back that would charge but not connect, it was even the one that came with the phone.
Use a USB port off the back of the computer, coming DIRECTLY off the MB. There have been tons of issues with using remote USB ports. If it's beeping when it connects, it's being seen by the computer. Just that there's a problem with getting the proper info.
I get this problem sometimes too. This is how I solve it. Under USB settings select Samsung Kies and plug the USB cable into your computer and phone. See if your computer recognizes your phone. Mine won't recognize Mass Storage but will Kies. I don't have the program installed so windows will say Drivers Not Successfully Installed. Once you have done that, restart the computer and phone with USB cord unplugged. Once both come back on, switch your phone back to Mass Storage and plug in your USB cable to both the computer and phone and see if it will be detected by your computer. If not I would try a different USB cable. That is what works for me when I have that problem.

Some cappies have issues with generic cables. Make its the original or a high quality one.

Would be a good idea to check if the following
1. Settings- applications- USB settings : make it ask on connection.
2. Change the USB port which you connect
So I can't connect my Droid RAZR to my windows 7 machine...
I have tried a lot of things!
I've tried:
*Different computers including Vista and Linux
*Different cables
*Different fastboot files
*Re-installing drivers
*Factory reset
*PIM sync from the market etc.
What happens when I plug my phone into my PC is the computer recognizes it, it makes a sound, then it says Unknown Device connected or some times it says USB malfunctioned and then on my lockscreen it says the phone is charging but it doesn't show on my battery icon.
Whats also interesting is if I got into Fastboot mode and connect to my computer it says USB connected and then I can use it in RSD with no problems.
I'm on ICS with no root.
Please help!

Try turning on USB Debugging (if you haven't), under Settings > Applications > Development.

With the phone plugged in, have you tried opening up the lockscreen so you can get to your phone? Please take a screenshot of the device manager settings.
Computer Management -> Device Manager -> Find the device (double click on it) -> Details -> Hardware Ids
Or you can write out what the hardware ID is. Thanks.
YOu said you also tried it in linux. please post the output from lsusb for any unknown devices

I am also having a similar issue with the pc not recognizing the phone. I never had an issue with this problem. I have only rooted my phone with no custom room. I have always connected my phone to the pc and was giving a connection screen on my phone asking me if i want to connect as a mass media storage. A week ago this behavior stopped. I don't know what to do anymore. I don't remember doing anything to the phone to mess up the setting? I connected it to several computers using different micro usb data cables and nothing occurs.
The only thing happens is my phone receives a charge from the computer and thats it. Any ideas? Is there anyway i can reset the system or what not?

me also facing same problem and already i turned on USB Debugging mode but nothing happened. still i can't connect USB mass storage of my android device
Hey guys what you should try to do is use this :
after pluggin in your devices and removing their current driver in device manager(control panel>admin tools>computer management>device manager>
and then install this
http://adbdriver.com/upload/AdbDriverInstaller.exe
also make sure you adb debugging is enabled (if it's not visible(setttings>about/info>build number tap it multiple times) usually its settings>dev options>usb debugging.
also maybe try using this software as pc suite myphonexplorer
Can you guys go to the storage menu in settings, press the menu key, select USB connection mode (or something like that) and play around with the settings in there? Try that out.

Not sure if it is supposed to be disabled on purpose or not.
Assuming you're a local admin and it's a windows machine, you can enable the USB-controller device by going in the control pannel -> devive manager. Locate the USB controller and if disable, right-click on it, enable.
That's also a good way of "reseting" your device if you encounter errors with it.
Yeah, its windows xp sp3... and required hrdwares are also present in the machine.. but it doesn't show any "usb controller" in device manager list(supposed to be there in last)...I installed the chipset drivers in that pc...successfully... but then too not showing the PD.
There are a handful of ways to disable usb in a computer. Easy way would be to unplug it directly from the inside of a PC. It's also possible to disable it through the pc's bios. And it can also be disabled by disabling the driver like the one mentioned above. Also it could be disabled through registry and group policy if on windows machine. There are alot more ways to do it that I didn't mention.
Thanks Riyal, i'll be trying that through bios and..i'll chck if hardwre is unpuged...
Tell u nxt day..
I would first update the usb drivers. I dont know if its your computer or one in a lab or whatever but if its running XP. Its a good chance the drivers havent been updated in awhile. When you say disabled, do you mean when you plug in a usb stick nothing happens or do you see in device manager that its disabled. Also it would only be relative to the motherboard controller if your using a front access usb port, as a back usb port is built in, have you tried other ports? Lastly there is always the bios, bios is probably hasnt been updated in awhile if this is not your computer, but make sure any usb controllers and or legacy usb devices are enabled.

Yes, the correct answer and very helpful ...
Hi,
I would like to see if I can get anyones assistance with solving my problem. I have lost the ability to connect my Nexus 5 to my computer via USB. I had previously been able to connect the phone without any problems.
Connecting my phone to PC charges the phone but no drivers are loaded, nothing changes in device manager and I cannot see a change in windows explorer to view the memory card.
So far I have tried the following:
searches on various sites
rebooting phone, starting in safe mode, wiping all data, performing a hard reset
connecting other phones to usb cable to check that it is not a charge only cable, also trying several other USB cables
connecting phone to other computers
connecting other phones (HTC) to load drivers (then uninstalling drivers)
displaying all hidden devices in device manager and removing all drivers that resemble something to do with mobile phones
uninstalling programs I no longer require on the PC
using "wugs nexus root toolkit" to uninstall and re-install drivers
checking & unchecking MTP, PTP, developer options, USB debugging in various combinations to elicit a response from the computer.
I have also tried to visually check the connections of the USB port on the phone wondering is there is a break but I cannot see very well.
does anyone have any further suggestions to get this phone connected to a PC?
my only last thought is to attempt to open the phone and check the resistance of the plug connections.
Have you tried enabling and disabling usb debugging while plugged in?

Are you sure you're using a data usb cable and the usb port is good?
Same Issue
same thing happened to me today when i connected the device to PC.
Mine says unknown device on PC under other devices. so i hope my USB port is ok.but im not using the original SUB cable. i wonder that's is the issue. but it didn't bother me until today. my original cable is at my friend's house.
Tried updating drivers manually. But following error message occurs once i select the drivers folder and hit ok.
Windows was unable to install your unknown device
Please help.
so, not really a solution but while at work my phone fell on to a nice rock cracking the screen. I have replaced the phone and the new phone connects to the pc fine, drivers come up without a problem (I will put this down to a fault with the phone)
Thank you for your assistance
I've seen many solutions for the reverse, but not for this problem.
I've got my Nexus 5 connected to my PC right now. I'm trying to copy files off of it, but the Nexus doesn't realize it's connected to the PC. With Android debugging on, Windows realizes there's an "Unknown USB Device" connected, but Android doesn't recognize the computer is connected at all. I've tried the other computer in our house and had the same issue.
I'm running on 4.4.2, so it shouldn't be something too out there, but I can't figure out what else to do.
On the other PC, did you use a different cable?

Using a different cable I was able to get the Tethering options to show up. Activating Tethering, the Nexus 5 was recognized as a "USB Composite Device". Trying to manually specify the USB driver to use hasn't changed anything.
With the different cable, deactivate tethering then delete the device in device manager. See if anything else shows up. Could be cable issue, could be phone port issue

Got it working. At some point I unchecked both the MTP and PTP connection options, but for whatever reason plugging the phone back into the computer didn't make the notification pop up. I had to go to Settings -> Storage -> (menu) USB computer connection in order to turn it back on.
Sorry for the trouble.
