I've just installed CorePlayer but it doesn't seem to recognize all videos I've downloaded in Vuze (MKV) - unknown file format! That seems strange, since the MKV file format for Vuze videos (Matroska) was actually developed by the CorePlayer people. I have a HTC Touch GSM (Elf) running on Onyx Ultimate 4.2 ROM (awsome, by the way).
So, any thoughts?
From what I have seen - MKV format is usually used for high def video's. I have not heard of any PPC supporting this format yet and many people don't even know yet what codec's they need on their desktops to run this format of video. You must have a large micro SD Card as a typical high def movie in MKV format would take up anywhere from 6 gigs to I have seen as large as 9 gigs. That is too much memory in my opinion to waste on my PPC - On my desktop is a different matter as I have plenty of drives and drive space but my PPC only has 16 gig micro sd and I don't want to fill it up with 2 movies only.
Stick to Divx - Xvid type files - you know .avi's and encode them again using something like pocket Divx encoder or something for viewing on your device. Not only will a typical movie only take up maybe 300 megs but it will still be very good quality for viewing on your PPC
Thanks a lot for the tips. However it is a bit strange tough. As I've mentioned they sell coreplayer mobile specifically to windows mobile operating devices, and MKV is one of the formats it should support. So it shouldn't be an issue at all. As for the movies size, I was not talking about full lengh movies encoded in full hd. I was referring to some documentaries that are encoded in mkv. Those files never surpass 700gb.

Yes, I still do it, because movies take less space on my SD card once they are in MP4 (with the right format) instead of original format.
I cannot change movies every nigth, I have to store 6 or 7 for the week... (and music, and pictures, and...)

SUPER is NOT a media player, its a video converter to use in your PC.
on my X10i (unbranded) the SE Mediascape video player plays better than Rock player, the sound is in sync more than Rock player for example.
I have also used "IM TOO" but found it very slow. (1.5 hours to encode a 30 minute episode of Alan Partridge.
I now use WinX DVD Ripper winxdvd d0t c0m (no I dont work for them).
If this is spyware or whatever please let me know, but in encodes a DVD film in 45 mins (even a Disney one with all that special encoding)
My question is....
"what is the ultimate setting for encoding a DVD to MP4 for the X10i?
Please do not reply if you are just guessing, the X10i does not like frame rate 30 for example..

x2 on using Super as the video convertor. It's free and it offers more features than most other video convertors.
but with RockPlayer (and yxplayer for some files) I no longer need to convert. my 16gb only stores documents, some pictures, and videos but no mp3 since i'd rather listen to streaming internet radio than download mp3s.
the "best" video setting will depend on how you rate video quality. imo, for smoothness and when you are watching movies, i'd go with 23 fps or less, and have high bitrate but reduced resolution (above half the resolution of the lcd display).
video conversion speeds depends mainly on your video converting settings (format, bitrate, resolution, etc.) and your CPU power, not the software.. just fyi.
I am currently using xmedia recode.
I use the settings for the Motorola Milestone when converting, as for some reason the X10 settings mess the audio up.
Pretty quick, and audio/visual sync is spot on
It doesn't matter what to use.
for example, I convert films from my 720p/1080p hd collection, using parameters, such as 854x480 resolution, 160 kbit audio bitrate and 1000-1200 kbit video bitrate.
And it looks like I watch a real hd video! The picture is perfect! Enjoy
Oh, and I noticed, that it's better to use h264 codecs with *.mkv container than mpeg4 with .mp4 and .avi
RockPlayer is the best for my monster-like videos Avatar with 1200 video bitrate and near 2gb file size works without any lags. This is the power of nice program code (thx for RockPlayer devs) with the connection of Snapdragon processor
i got some 700mb avi movies and dropped it on my phone. it said it could not play. do i need to resize it or is it an encoder issue? maybe the file size is too big? idk!

use rockplayer or vplayer, I had played 2.7gb mkv 720p movie with no issue.

Try the program "handbrake" with high profile settings
Are you using a custom rom? Because I have been watching 700 mb .avi and great big hd .mkv with no problem, on both stock and newest cognition. Only format I HAVE had a problem with is m2ts.
I use PavTube Ultimate Blu-Ray Converter to make Xvid MP4 files out of my discs. They work great on the Captivate. I played around with different settings and there really isn't much visual difference between using the native 800x480 resolution compared to HD rez, but the difference in file size is significant.
I get the same issues with some AVI's in both Rockplayer and the stock player on the stock rom. Haven't tried movies since flashing to Cognition 2.3b7. MKV's don't typically play in rockplayer, the few that have skipped a ton, or they would play with no audio. Not sure what you guys are doing to your movies to make them play. All of my videos are encoded properly, and play on my WD TV Live just fine. The WD is a good test of media quality for rips.
The WD TV Live also can play pretty much any audio and video codec you throw at it.

There have been mkv's that have not played correctly on it, so if it's not encoded properly, the WD is a good test, from my experience.
I have some 700mb xvid movies on my phone and they play fine on stock rom w/stock player. But I highly recommend vplayer for video and rtsp watching.

Requirements:
Installed copy of Handbrake software
Video files and or DVD of your choice
Samsung Captivate with microUSB cable
Step I: Launch the Handbrake application on your computer and select the video source
In the menu on the right-hand side, select the iPod Legacy preset (figure 1)
Select your video source by clicking on the Source dropdown menu (we used a DVD for our testing purposes)
Select the destination and name for the file once it has been converted (both the .mp4 and .m4v extension work for the Captivate)
Confirm that the container is set to MP4 File and that Large file size, Web optimized, and iPod 5G support are unchecked
Step II: Adjust Handbrake's Video Settings
Picture Tab:
Uncheck Keep Aspect Ratio
Set the Captivated Width and Height (the Captivate supports a maximum of 800 x 480 pixels)
Video Tab:
Confirm the Video Codec is set as H.264 (x264)
Framerate (FPS) should be set to Same as source
Under Quality, select the Avg Bitrate (kbps) and change it to 1500
Step III: Adjust audio settings
Confirm the Audio Codec is AAC (faac)
Mixdown should be set to Stereo
Change the Samplerate to 48
Change the Bitrate to 160
Step IV: Save as a preset for future use
Click on the Presets menu and select New Preset
Enter Captivate in the dialog box and click Add
"Captivate" will now be saved as a preset and listed on the right hand side in Handbrake to be used in the future
Step V: Convert the video and copy to your Captivate
Click on the Start button in Handbrake
A command line/DOS window will open and start to process the video conversion
Once the conversion is done, mount your Captivate on to your computer via USB
Once mounted, create a folder named Video in the root folder on the Captivate
Copy converted file into the Video folder
That's it! The converted video can now be played on your Captivate using the Gallery app. It should look fantastic on the Captivate's screen as long as the original source was of good quality.
A few things to keep in mind when converting video:
The Captivate does not like video file sizes over 2GB (the settings in Step II should help insure that the file size is kept under 2GB)
Your converted video will only be as good as the source video
If your source is over 800 x 480, you must be sure to set the width and height to a maximum of 800 x 480 as noted in Step II

i hate converting! all i want is drag, drop and play.. easy as that.

I don't know what went wrong, I can just say I'm running same cog rom you are and so far .mkv, .avi and .mp4 work just fine for me on the stock vid player :-/

Tried Handbrake using the settings above and the video was garbage. I'll stick with Pavtube as it converts anything I throw at it in any format without issue and it does Blu-Ray, as well. Looks like 1500 bit rate is the sweet spot for good video quality and manageable file size.
I believe all you have to click is High profile on the right side , that is it

I don't think u would need to convert any vids for the captivate. Captivate by itself plays a variety of formats
Actually, since I'm ripping mostly Blu-Ray discs, they DO need to be converted. And I did a check ripping standard DVD to both mpg2 and mp4. A 50mb mpg2 rip was about 3:40 (min:seconds) whereas the same settings ripped to mp4 was closer to 4:20. Over the span of a complete movie, the mp4 conversion will yield a smaller file size.
I have been using an older version of DVDFab v8.0.7.3 to convert dvd's to m4v files to watch on my phones. All of my older movies play fine. Anything I convert now with this newer version will not play. They will play fine on my computer but not my TBolt. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Anyone familiar with DVDFab v8.0.8.5 feel like giving me a little heads up?

What are you using to play the video. Try a different player.
I have the stock video player and the 3d gallery one. But that still doesn't explain why my older videos work and the newer one don't unless there is a problem with the new program I'm ripping from vs the older version.
I've used Badaboom, Xilisoft Video and AVS to convert videos. If you're really nuts like me, first you use SlySoft to remove the DRM from the DVD in your computer's optical drive. Then I use 1ClickDVDCopyPro to rip the DVD into a folder on my hard drive.
From that hard drive folder I use AVS Video Converter (v7) to create a video from the profile for Android devices with some slight modifications. I change the frame size to 800x480 or 720x480. I also change the audio down to 128kbps (just to save space). The bitrate for the video I go between 800 and 1500, depending. For documentaries and dramas, 800 to save space and 1500 for action movies to give a cleaner video playback.
Then use RockPlayer (download the ARM v7 - don't use the universal player) to playback the MP4 video. That's the best success I've had with converting my own video.
Usually anything that I download from the Internet, I use the Xilisoft Video Converter (v6.5.3) to create pretty much the same thing as the DVD rips. The reason I don't use Xilisoft for DVD rips is the way it reads the IFO files from DVD's. The AVS software is pretty intuitive for the files based on the IFO. I also try to download the highest quality I can find so I don't lose much in re-encoding the video to a lower bitrate.

Oh yeah. Forgot to mention. I've used Badaboom, but found it slow and didn't seem to make my video conversions better or equal to the AVS or Xilisoft converters. Hard to tell on the TB because of the small screen, but when viewed on the computer it looks worse by comparison.
Plus, the Xilisoft CUDA seems to work faster (I have a new Intel Sandy Bridge with a GTX 460 for processing) than the Badaboom. Xilisoft converts 4 videos at a time on my computer, each hour long video taking about 15-20 minutes to complete (simultaneously). Very nice.
Well... I tried that Rock Player and it works okay. I still can't figure out for the life of me why my other videos play when they were created the same way as the newer ones. Rock player seems to play them fine and the stock player plays the avi files I created I just don't think they look as good as the m4v ones I made previously. I guess I'm just going to have to fool around with it alot more to get things figured out.
For newer movies, DVDFAB to remove the protection then Handbrake to convert. DVDFAB is free for just ripping DVDs but they don't make that really known on their website. This is possibly the most fool-proof way to do it but it also gives you plenty of options if you're into that.

I already have a good software - Badaboom which is nVidia Certfiied as it uses the GPU for both Encode & Decode.
The format that I use with it for the Motorola Xoom, same display resolution as the Galaxy Note.
However, I have noticed that the output is not as what it should be.
It seems a bit off.
The movie which I have encoded is a Full HD 1080p. - Original Size is 7.8 Gigs or so and the Rip comes out to 3.02 Gigs.
There is a little noticeable Lip Sync, but the picture is little different.
Have you tried MoboPlayer? It has a soft decode feature which can play back pretty much any format (no need to convert any files at all ).
DVD Catalyst?
Badaboom sucks. It's fast, but quality...meh. GPU encoding has a long way to go.
If you have a decent CPU and are not too technically minded try Handbrake, it works wonders.
I owned a Xoom myself. The screen is nowhere near as rich as the Note although they have similar pixel resolution.
I tried handbrake and it looks nice but doesn't take dvd rips, ie .vob files? But it will scan a dvd to rib? I alway rip my dvds with dvdripper on mac then convert them when i fell like it. Even though it seems more realistic to just rip the dvd to the desired format in the beginning.
Edit: so i tried some things. for awhile i was doing full dvd rips, then i started just doing main feature extraction(to save space) and in handbrake when trying to load the main feature rip it says no source found. When i select a full dvd rip it loads. Im assuming handbrake is looking for the audio ts folder among other things to think its a valid source ... Bummer because i save 1-2gb by not doing a full dvd rip...
MX Player will play .vob and almost all other formats.

Try VLC Player, Its only beta at the moment and is almost identical to mx player, I use it on my pc and you can adjust audio sync and stuff, I'm sure these features will be available soon on the android version.

I have to say I am not sure what you are trying to do here, have you ripped a DVD to VOBS and then try to encode it again?, why don't you just rip the DVD straight to a compatible file with a compatible codec that your PC, Phone and Tablet can handle.
Most devices can handle a 1080p Hn64 high profile rip as long as you have summed audio channels to stereo, this way you can have very large bitrates and upscale your DVD's to play on your PC as well. Playing them on your Tablet and phone will be smooth if you use the sammy video player as hardware acceleration will come in to play.
