Sensation 4g running Ubuntu 10.10 LDXE - HTC Sensation

just as the title says, with the valiant effort of #teamwin granting SU and busybox, we finally have ubuntu running on the S4G!
MODS: DIDNT KNOW WHERE TO PUT THIS, HOPEFULLY THEMES & APPS IS OK.
i take ZERO credit for any of the source material, please give props to devs beecause without them, none of this would be possible!
PoC video: (i hate making youtube vids for **** like this, but most ppl will complain "vid or it didnt happen :/")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28LQElx2zPU
and, yes i know that i couldnt get any of the apps running, but that is beacuse it was like the 4th time i mounted and vnc'd in, so the RAM was pretty full
HD2 Ubuntu main thread (dl, faq, etc.):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1025499
note that this is pretty simple stuff, if you cant get it running, you werent meant to run it!
READ READ READ the posts before asking silly questions that have already been answered!
EDIT: i WILL help with any relevant questions to getting the res correct, and any connectivity issues you may have, etc., but i will not be answering "how do i use terminal emulator", or any questions like that

nice ive been trying this but in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197377 it says i need a certain kernel can u tell me what kernel ur using for the sensation to allow this?

It runs through the script without an error, but VNC just throws a Connection refused error.

Stock TMOUS kernel
2.6.35.10-gb7a86da
If you're getting connection refused, make sure you're rooted with busybox, and typing in the login info correctly ( nickname: ubuntu, user:ubuntu, pass:ubuntu), and using port 5900 for the first time connection. That will have the image stretched, but after the initial log in, you can modify the res.
EDIT* also, give the TE like 1min to load the image, and BE SURE its still running (press HOME instead of BACK) when you run VNC)
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App

I put an echo at the end of the script to notify me when its done. But even if I give it 2, 3 minutes after the last line, VNC refuses to connect. The info put into androidVNC is correct.
Edit: I'm rooted, with busybox, but on a stock rom
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App

hmmm...i could be app ver issues, im running the following
busybox 1.18.4
TE 1.0.31
VNC 0.5.0
Ubuntu 10.10 LDXE (HD2 version) [/sdcard/ubuntu/ubuntu.img, ubuntu.sh]
INSTRUCTIONS (everything is case sensitive!!!)
load TE, then enter:
export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH:
su
cd sdcard/ubuntu
sh ubuntu.sh
wait a moment...
hit home and load VNC and input the following:
nickname: ubuntu
address: localhost
port: 5900
password: ubuntu
In menu options select 24bit colour, local mouse, 1:1 scaling and Touchpad only to make navigating menus much easier.
then hit connect
it should load with no issues, i still use it regularly

Works nice, I recomend to download package from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=962023 cause I couldn't get it from link in 1st post

Installing Debian + Gnome, KDE, IceWM or LXDE Desktop on your rooted G1!

Found an easy way to install Debian, resize the debian.img, and run a desktop on your rooted G1!
1. Installing Debain - has an installer.
For step 6. Do this instead:
Code:
# su
# ./installer.sh
OR
# su ./installer.sh
2. Resize debain.img
3. Installing Desktop
For those who run into problems or errors while installing/downloading tightvncserver and/or LXDE follow these modifications:
1. type:
Code:
cd /etc/apt
nano sources.list
2. add after the first one:
Code:
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian lenny main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian lenny main contrib non-free
3. Hold down the trackball and hit o
4. Hit return (to save the new sources.list)
5. Hold the trackball and hit x (to exit nano)
6. Type (enter after each one):
Code:
apt-get update
apt-get install tightvncserver
apt-get install lxde
For Haykuro's builds [Thanks to buttkicker!]:
The procedure is same for 5.0.2H versions as well.
However, some files need to be modified.
I am attaching two sets of files.
Use as needed.
1: debian_v21-sdcard.zip
extract to /sdcard/debian
2: debian_v21-system-sd.zip
extract to /system/sd/debian (ext2 partition)
Replace the files in the original downloaded package with the ones in this post.
If you chose option 2, remember to type
Code:
cd /system/sd/debian
in step 4

Thanks for this info, I'd also like to know if anyone hs tried it using the H build roms .... as apposed to JF's rom ... as stated in the instructions!
Thanks will try this on my G1 verry nice.
does this make a dual boot option? or how does it work?
no it doesn't. you run debian via the terminal emulator, then you run the Desktop app through a VNC viewer (i think, something like that anyway)
also this has been around for ages and doesn't have much use as all of them run stupidly slowly. (that being said, now we can get the processor running faster it might be better)
n1 on the guides though, much more helpful than trawling through countless threads

This is not dual boot. This runs Debian "like" an app running in the android Shell. Calls and everything will still work while in the debian.

[DEV] Boot Ubuntu on your HTC Desire HD - WIP

Ububtu for you HTC Desire HD
In June 2010, XDA zedomax got Ubuntu 9.04 running on Nexus One, tutorial is available at this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=718952
[email protected] then continued studying the tutorial and worked out a way to make Ubuntu 9.04 running better, smoother and cause less errors, here's hes post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=815532
Recently HTC_Linux team has released version 0.3 of their Ubuntu image, compare to the original guide provided by zedomax, the v0.3 release is based on the latest Ubuntu 10.10 and is a WIP, V0.4 is currently undergiong testing.
What benefits will you get from running Ubuntu 10.10 on your DHD (at least):
1. Fully functional Linux terminal, with all standard Linux command line utilities
2. Fully functional desktop browser Firefox 3.6.13
3. Ability to compile and run native Linux applications
4. Bunch of graphical Internet and utility applications as shown in the screenshots
As promised, here is a little guide to get Ubuntu Desktop running on you DHD, The image used is a WIP and has been built for use with the HTC HD2. the scripts, from the above threads modified by my self to work with the DHD
Credits:
Thanks to the great XDA-developers community.
Thanks to Zedomax for providing the original tutorial of running Ubuntu on Nexus One.
Thanks to HTC_Linux team for creating the optimised Ubuntu 10.10 image file.
Basic requirements
A Rooted HTC Desire HD (Ace)
A MicroSD with minimum 3GB free space
A Custom kernel wit LoopBack support (I have attatched mine )
The Below Ubuntu.rar which contains ubuntu.img & the required scripts (modified by my self)
An android terminal emulator -from the market
Android VNC - from the market
If you're using Froyo App2SD, move all your applications which are on SD card back to Internal Storage and ensure FroYo A2SD install location is set to internal(1) by typing #"pm setInstallLocation 1" into your android terminal. If you fail to do so, you won't be able to enter Ubuntu.
LeeDrOiD V2.0.6 custom Kernel - 21/02/11 5:25pm GMT(MultiUpload)(2.46mb)
MD5# ba511a40ef17352b9a8a35013eb16674
Ubuntu.rar (Torrent)
How to
1. Extract the Ubuntu.rar that you have just downloaded to an "ubuntu" folder on the root of your SD card.
2. Open your Android Terminal Emulator
3. Type “cd sdcard/ubuntu” (enter)
4. Type su to go to superuser mode
3. Type “sh ubuntu.sh
4. If you see “Type 'bootubuntu' to boot Ubuntu”, then you're almost there!
5. Type “bootubuntu” (enter)
6. You should now see “"[email protected]:/#"” Congratulations! Now you're running Ubuntu 10.10
Whenever you want to enter Ubuntu again, simply cd to the ubuntu directory and type “bootubuntu” (enter) in your Android Terminal.
To properly exit Ubuntu, you must type exit from the Ubuntu terminal.
If your Android terminal application gets killed by Android system (i.e. you lost Ubuntu terminal), you need to go back to Android terminal, type “exit” (enter), that will properly unmount Ubuntu.
Very often you can get “loop device busy” error when exiting from Ubuntu, in that case, type “exit” (enter) multiple times (it's harmless to run the“exit” script multiple times, don't worry). If still you get “loop device busy”error, don't worry, just ignore it.
Loading the GUI (Gnome desktop) 1. Install “android-vnc-viewer” from Market (free)
2. Enter Ubuntu terminal
3. Make sure that you have network connection (Wi-fi recommended)
4. type “apt-get update” (enter), and wait till it finishes
5. type “apt-get install tightvncserver” (enter) and answer “y” to the question
6. After you have installed tightvncserver, type “cd /bin” (enter)
7. Type the following commands (all are case-sensitive!):
“cat > x” (enter)
“rm -r -f /tmp” (enter)
“mkdir /tmp” (enter)
“chmod 777 /tmp” (enter)
“export USER=root” (enter)
“export XKL_XMODMAP_DISABLE=1” (enter)
“vncserver -geometry 1024x800” (enter)
(enter)
(At this point you will need to configure "vol-" as Ctrl in Android terminal emulator preferences)
(Now hold volume down and press D on your keypad)
“chmod 777 x” (enter)
8. The above procedure makes a script named “x”, whenever you want to start GUI, you need to type “x” (enter).
Notice that the first time (only the first time) you run “x” script you'll be prompt to enter a password for VNC connection, then you'll be asked whether to create a “view-only” password, since it is not necessary, answer “n” to the question.
9. Start “android-vnc-viewer”, create a new connection with the following settings:
Nickname: (anything you like to identify the connection)
Password: the VNC connection password that you created when ran the “x”script
Address: localhost
Port: 5901
Color format: 24-bit color (4 bpp)
Click “Connect” button, and in about a minute, you'll see your Ubuntu 10.10 desktop!
10. We still need to create one final script called “s”, now go back to your Ubuntu terminal and type:
“cd /bin” (enter)
“cat > s” (enter)
“export USER=root” (enter)
“vncserver -kill :1” (enter)
“vncserver -kill :2” (enter)
“sudo reboot” (enter)
“sudo halt” (enter)
(enter)
(press and hold Vol- & click “D” on keyboard)
“chmod 777 s” (enter)
11. If you have GUI running, you * MUST * type “s” (enter) to stop VNC server before you exit from Ubuntu terminal!
In case that your Android kills your Android Terminal application and you still have VNC server running, do the following steps:
a. Start Android Terminal
b. type “bootubuntu” (enter) to bring back Ubuntu terminal
c. type “s” (enter) to stop VNC server
d. type “exit” (enter) to exit from Ubuntu terminal
Fail to do so you will have problem with VNC connection next time you use it.
What's not currently working in Ubuntu:
1. Sound
2. Some applications may not run (I guess, due to Android memory management mechanism)
A little trick to access SD card from your Ubuntu:
1. Install “SwiFTP” from Market (freeware)
2. Set up FTP server using SwiFTP
3. In Ubuntu, “Places → Connect to Server” then:
Service type: FTP (with login)
Server: localhost
Port: (port number specified in SwiFTP, default is 2121)
Folder: /
User Name: (user name specified in SwiFTP)
Then press “Connect” and enter your password specified in SwiFTP. Now feel free to access your phone's file system!
This is a rough guide for the time being, I will hopefully continue work on this in the future (time permitting of course)
ENJOY!!
Thank you Lee!
I'll try this ASAP.

You have apps installed to the fat 32 partition as per FroYo A2SD.
Go to settings - applications - manage applications - select the sd tab, and move them to internal

[WIP] Ubuntu on the Thrive!

Hey guys!
A friend of mine who is into phone roms and modding, showed me Ubuntu running on his Nexus Android Phone, and thought about how cool it would be to get Ubuntu Running on the Thrive! With a bit of Research I found that there is an ARM port of Ubuntu. The reason why that is an awesome thing is because Linux has this cool thing called chrooting. chrooting is the process of running another version of linux within another running linux OS instance. The downside of chroot is that you can chroot an os made for your phones architecture. In this case, the Terga 2 IS Arm based, so we're all set to go on that. With a few hours of toying around, I have successfully gotten Ubuntu running on my Thrive.
What you'll Need:
- Basic working knowledge of linux.
- The Arm Port of Ubuntu. ubuntu.zip
Original Dev's Site: Download File - ubuntu_zip - DownloadAndroidROMs.com
Mirror 1: MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service
Mirror 2: http://www.zettech.net/ubuntu.zip
Mirror 3: ubuntu.zip - download now for free. File sharing. Software file sharing. Free file hosting. File upload. FileFactory.com
- A *ROOTED* Thrive, with busybox installed and atleast 3gb of spare space in the *INTERNAL* storage... Not the SDCard Storage. You can find out how to do this all at this thread: http://www.thriveforums.org/forum/t...ment/1399-full-working-rooted-thrive-now.html
- A computer with adb setup and the correct working drivers for your thrive. If your Thrive is rooted, than you should have working drivers, unless you rooted it from another pc, in which case you can look at the root thread in this development forum for help. You can check to see if ADB is working by typing "adb devices" at the command promt. A few lines that look like this should pop up.
List of devices attached
286416746464667 device
^ The numbers will look different. Thats OK. If the list is empty, you have a driver issue or connection issue with adb.
How to do it:
1. Download and extract the ubuntu.zip file from one of the above links to your hard drive.
2. Connect your thrive to the PC and Connect your Thrive to a Wifi Access Point.
3. A new storage device should show up. This is your thrive. Now place the ubuntu folder you just extracted in the root of the thrives storage device. NOTE: This is *NOT* actually the sdcard your storing the files on. This is the devices internal memory. (don't put it in the /sdcard-disk0 folder.)
4. Open up an adb shell. Do this by typing "adb shell" at the command promt. A "#" should appear, indicatng you are at a root shell on your thrive.
5. Type "cd /sdcard/ubuntu"
6. Type "sh ubuntu.sh" This is the script that sets all of the permissions for the ubuntu image. You *WILL* see errors on this part. Ignore them.
7. Type "bootubuntu". You should now see a command line that looks like this:
# bootubuntu
bootubuntu
net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1
Setting /etc/resolv.conf to Google Open DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
Setting localhost on /etc/hosts
READY TO ROCK AND ROLL BABY!
Brought to you by NexusOneHacks.net and the open source community!
* Congrats. You have Ubuntu running on your thrive now... Now for a better way to control it...
8. Update the OS:
Code:
apt-get update
9. Change the root password:
Code:
passwd root
^ Set this to a secure password. Wouldn't want anyone sploit'en ya eh?
10. Find your Thrives IP Address:
Code:
ifconfig
^ It should be listed as "inet addr" under the wlan0 interface. (See? Told ya you would need basic linux skills. ).
11. Install SSH:
Code:
apt-get install openssh-server
^ Once thats installed, you should be able to ssh to your thrive by either connecting to 127.0.0.1 from a terminal emulater on the thrive, or your thrives IP from a PC on the same network.
12. Install and start a VNC Server:
Code:
apt-get install tightvncserver
Code:
export USER=root
^Tell's what user to start VNC as.
Code:
vncserver -geometry 1280×720
^This starts the VNC server. It will ask you for a password. Remember this password. You may also try 1280x800 if 1280x720 gives you issues.
Now that VNC is installed and running. You should be able to connect to it from a VNC client on port *5901*. If connecting from the Thrive itself, you can connect to 127.0.0.1, or you can connect from a PC by using the thrives IP.
What the issues are:
Ok... So I literally *JUST* got VNC up and running as I am writing this post. I'm actually just on my way out the door to go home for the weekend hahah, so I'm sure alot of these issues can be fixed with minor tweaks. I'm also sure there are more issues out there. I just wanted to get this posted up though so that people can start playing with it.
- VNC Resolution and colors are set incorrectly. This I believe is just an issue with the default configuration file for VNC. I believe the color quality setting just needs to be raised and the resolution adjusted to the native resolution of the thrive.
- Has to be install to Main memory: This is because the script that sets all of the permissions is hard coded with /sdcard/ubuntu as the location for the installation. /sdcard/ isn't actually the sdcard on the thrive. It's internal memory. I'm certain that a quick edit of the sh script will fix this. Is it really a good idea to run ubuntu off a slow, and limited write capacity sdcard?
All of the above issues i'll look at tonight when I get home! Happy hacking guys!
I cant seem to get vnc working the client keeps failing

can you use the onscreen keyboard or do you have to use an external?
What you mean like the keyboard in ubuntu or while im in the vnc client
Sent from my AT100 using Tapatalk
I mean, can I put ubuntu on the tablet and use the tablet as a Ubuntu tablet or do I need to hook up a keyboard or use VNC in order to use the tablet?
With Android, I have a keyboard built into the software. Does Ubuntu have one?
Im not sure I havent made it that far. But you need to use a vnc client

You download a VNC Client for Android, and connect to your Ubuntu Instance via that. VNC should support whatever on screen keyboard you have installed.
Ok, so it's not really a "Ubuntu" I can walk around with... not yet anyway.

Well to an extent it is. You can use VNC right from the Thrive to connect to Ubuntu. Ubuntu would still be running locally on the thrive as well. You can also use a terminal emulator to ssh to ubuntu as well.
In all Honesty, I only posted this to show that the thrive does indeed have the power to run Ubuntu. The version of Ubuntu it runs is the ARM version; which doesn't have many working applications for it yet.
hey i am stuck at [email protected]:/#

[Q] Installing pkill CE5

I'm using Windows CE on a Symbol MC9090 and want to use pkill to kill a process. I'm having difficulty in these areas:
1 - downloading it from here: Well - sorry, I'm not an 8 time poster so I can't post the link but there's a simple page that the url looks like: htt p:/ /itsme .home .xs4all .nl /projects /xda /tools .html
* I did manage to download the ENTIRE binary from a link on that same URL but still, clicking the pkill link takes me to the wiki which is irritating when all I wanted was pkill.exe
2 - "installing" pkill, can I just drop it on the device and it'll work? I also copied down itsutils.dll manually to \windows. It won't run though, I try pkill /?, pkill --help, pkill.exe, etc but it "Cannot execute".
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Ubuntu Touch port for Captivate

I went on and ported from scratch (not using work done for the i9000) Ubuntu Touch for our magic samsung captivate! The port itself is just the base of CyanogenMod to be able to support the binary blobs (drivers) of various devices without having to rewrite them (source code is usually not avaliable). Mine is the i897 ATT variant.
I wanted to post the link to the rom from my google drive, but since i just registered here to post this I cannot post external links. PM me and i will send the link to you ASAP!!
Installation instructions:
1- Copy the CM_BASE_UBUNTU_TOUCH zip file to the phone (internal or external sd doesn't matter)
2- Download the latest image of Ubuntu Touch from the ubuntu website. The current filename is quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip (This will change once the builds are based on Raring - 13.04 - and not Quantal - 12.10): PM ME FOR LINK OR SEARCH GOOGLE FOR "UBUNTU TOUCH DAILY"
3- Copy the Ubuntu Touch image to the phone
4- Reboot into recovery
5- Install CM_BASE_UBUNTU_TOUCH.zip from sd
6- Wipe Cache
7- Wipe Data partition
8- Install Ubuntu Touch zip from sd card
9- Patiently wait
10- Reboot and Enjoy!
EDIT--> Now you have the system 90% ready, but for the resolution of our device and the size of our screen we will have to change some parameters to fix the dpi and scaling:
EDIT 2 --> All these steps are unneccessary if you flash http://goo.im/devs/pawitp/galaxysmtd...x-20130223.zip after everything else. Thanks go to Citrit who pointed out the post in the i9000 ubuntu touch thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2162534
If you want to go through how it is done, or if you want to play with the settings, follow on. If not, jump past the F.
11- While the device is on, connect to your computer via usb
12- From a terminal, run the following commands
A- adb root (necessary to be able to enter directly into a root adb shell)
B- adb shell (we are based on cyanogen, so our lovely adb commands still work)
C- ubuntu_chroot shell (to enter a linux command prompt, since ubuntu is a layer on top of the android linux kernel)
D- vi /usr/bin/ubuntu-session (edit the session configuration. I used vi but feel free to do however you like)
E- Here near the beginning you will find a series of preconfigurations for some devices and a generic one at the end: this is the one we have to edit. The GRID_UNIT_PX parameter with 18 as a value has to be changes to 11 or 12 (test and see how you like it), and the QTWEBKIT_DPR parameter with 2.0 has to be changed to 1.1 or 1.2
F- you can reboot directly from the chroot session typing "reboot" (without the quotes)
Taken from the Ubuntu Touch porting guide:
you can use adb port forwarding to easily connect to the container via SSH over USB. To do so, run the following commands:
adb forward tcp:8888 tcp:22
ssh [email protected] -p 8888
Currently the power button does not work with recent kernels, so one of the following options must be run:
remove the battery and replace it
run "reboot -p" from the adb shell
adb root
adb shell reboot -p
If you appreciate my work, leave feedback! If you don't, leave feedback! All feedback is welcome! I'd like to know your thoughts, experiences and what bugs or annoyances you encounter!
P.S If the mods could give me permission to post ouside links (or if they could post it themselves if i pm it to them) we would all be very grateful
What works and what doesnt

Sure! All you have to do is reboot into recovery (sending an adb command or using the usual button combination) and reflash your favourite rom from there! I tested with the nightly CyanogenMod and with SlimBean, both 4.2.2, and all went well

What we have to do is change a couple of lines in the ubuntu-session configuration file. It is located, in ubuntu, in /usr/bin/ubuntu-session. The way i chose to edit this file was via chroot from my pc.
With the phone powered on, connect it to a computer with ADB installed (install the android sdk if you haven't, i personally use linux but you can on windows and osx too). Then from a terminal run the following commands:
adb root
adb shell
ubuntu_chroot shell
After you have inserted these commands, you will find youself in a chroot session, basically any command you now write executes on the phone as if you ran it from there. So i used a terminal text editor (vi, to be precise, but i assume you can use whatever you prefer) and opened the file with this command:
vi /usr/bin/ubuntu-session
vi was designed decades ago, for keyboards without arrow keys, so to move around read a bit on the page i PM'd you.
What you now have to do is scroll down to where you see the following code:
export GRID_UNIT_PX=18
grep -q QTWEBKIT_DPR /home/phablet/.bashrc
[ $? -ne 0 ] && echo "export QTWEBKIT_DPR=2.0" >> /home/phablet/.bashrc
export QTWEBKIT_DPR=2.0
export FORM_FACTOR="phone"
What you have to change is the 18 and the 2.0, repectively in 11 and 1.1 (play around with slightly different settings to get the feel you prefer).
Save the file and type "reboot" in the terminal.
Your phone will now restart, and load up the UI with the settings you just changed
Let me know if you have problems, when I find some time I'll get back to you
anyone?
Has anybody tried this yet?
Looks good
Everything installed fine, had no issues with that. Only issue I'm having is I can't seem to change the resolution by following the above steps. Ubuntu touch looks good though . WORKS: Wifi, Camera. Will provide more feedback once I get into it more.

What problems do you encounter? I noticed that trying to edit the file with nano wouldn't let me save it, as if the command just wouldn't go through, but maybe that was just me.
Everything worked great for me, and the latest build fixes the need for an open Wifi. It now prompts for a password. Here is a fix for the layout, it was taken from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2162534
Grab the file http://goo.im/devs/pawitp/galaxysmtd_ubuntu/ubuntu-aries-layout-fix-20130223.zip and install this last.

Have you read the information on how to use vi? There are certain commands to use to edit text, it was built for computer from ages ago, that didn't have many things we're now used to. Excuse me if you are experienced enough to know how to use vi ^^

Follow the instruction in the OP about installing a third zip file, then you can safely ignore all the vi instructions.
Sorry if I'm being a dip**** by asking this, but where exactly do I obtain a copy of this "CM_BASE_UBUNTU_TOUCH zip"? I have a captivate begging me for ubuntu touch right now. lol :silly:
can you port to vibrant too
the vibrant is the tmobile version on the captivate can your port to that too. il help with testing:fingers-crossed:
Well from what in seeing I think all u do is flash the nightly of cm10.1 or whatever it is and u should be fine I think his cm_base_Ubuntu_touch thing is his rip from the rom and he's flashing it just as a kernel
