I was just exploring my phone and I went onto the hidden menu:
*#*#4636#*#*
From here, I changed the network thingy from GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) to GSM only just to see what it was about. All of a sudden my data connection went from 3G to edge. So then I changed it back to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) and there isn't a change. I have turned off my phone and restarted but still only get Edge connection. The area I live in has a very strong 3G signal all the time. Is there any solution on how to get my 3G back? Im on stock rom 2.3.4 rooted. I also have the I9020A version from Rogers. Any help would be much appreciated.
*PS I really don't want to do a factory reset
Have you tried mark and unmark "2g only" in network settings?

Hi all,
I'm new to the Nexus S 4G root scene. I just flashed Miui yesterday, and I am getting no 3G. I couldn't find anyone else that was having this issue.
Everything else works, and I get 1x data, but not 3G. It's not the location because stock gets me full 3G service in the same location.
I flashed this kernel: http://www.peteralfonso.com/2011/08/download-nexus-s-263514-kernel.html?spref=tw
but it didn't fix anything.
Thanks for your help
Edit: After going out with my phone, I realized I do in fact have 3G reception, but it's very poor and constantly switches between 3G and 1x. I normally have very good reception with stock Android in my area. It doesn't stay connected to 3G for more than a few seconds at a time and switches back and forth between 3G and 1x
Have you set up the phone to use 3G at all?
Go to Settings, and find Mobile Network settings, and there should be one box that says something like 2g only.
You probably know what to do from there on.

Under "Mobile Network Settings" there is no option for that. Only "Data Enabled" which is turned to "on"

Maybe I'm just being dumb, but it's not there.
Settings > System > Mobile Network Settings
there are 4 choices:
Data Enabled (on), Always receive MMS (on), Data roaming (off), and System Select (automatic)

I'm on bamf soab 1.03 and I dont think anyone else is habing this problem but I'm wondering if anyone knows how to fix this issue. When I get 4g signal the phone will use it but won't use 3g. It drops out of 4g and then just stays without data. So basically its only using 4g or else its just not connecting to 3g. There is no data problem in my area because people I live with are getting 3g just fine....any ideas?
Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks > Radio Info > Change LTE only to CDMA/LTE mode
if you don't have the radio info option there, download LTE toggle from the market and do the last step.
heh. i tried out the new 1.03 and market just kept crashing on me(even after force stopping/clearing data) and uninstalling updates. so i just thought "to hell with it" and switched back over to shiftao3p
No such setting as LTE only. And my phone has always been on LTE/cdma so its not that I already checked that. I'm not a noob user.
do you have EHRPD on under modem settings in ##778? It should be. Past that I sometimes reset if it has issues locking on to one and that will resolve. That's all for my ideas, though I'm still on SOAB 1.02

This is what i was going to suggest. Here's some information that might be helpful. I've found that with the network testing and stuff the past few weeks in my area, sometimes revision a enabled is better, sometimes eHRDP works better. Try switching revision A and see what it does.
Try dialing ##778# on your phone, hit call if you need to.
Choose edit mode
Password is 000000 (six zeros)
Choose modem settings, go down to revision A, and change from e HRDP to "enabled"
Press menu and commit modifications, phone will reboot.
After it settles you may need to go to *#*#4636#*#* and choose phone info then change your preferred network settings to get a solid signal.

I was messing with it last night and seems that the issue is fixed if it happens again ill follow those steps. I'm a pretty advanced user but I'm not so familiar with those settings so thanks for the help

I'm running a version of 2.11.605.3, de-bloated and rooted.
I lost 3G on October 21st. I would either get 4G, or nothing. On occassion, I would get 1x. Selecting CDMA only gives me NO data
If I change the REV-A option under the ##778# menu from EHRPD to enabled, the 3G comes back and the toggling between 3G and 4G works fine.
Switch back to EHRPD and 3G goes away. Seems like the problem is with EHRPD. I don't know why all of a sudden it stopped working correctly and I don't have enough tech skills to identify the possible cause.
VZW has had trouble with their Data network the last two weeks, could be a VZW problem. I have not had any 3G problems on my phone and I am running SoaB v1.03 on my phone.

How to Fix AT&T Data Throttle Your 4G - Your Data Usage is Among The Top 5% Of Users
There is a nice little APN fix. Just change the APN to Phone and force your phone to use HSPA in your phone's settings. I have instructions with a screenshot...
http://www.traemcneely.com/2011/12/...rottle-4g-data-anti-throttling-trick-for-att/
How do you perform the first step on the skyrocket?
1. Go to Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Click Network Mode and force your phone to use GSM/HSPA (Auto mode).
I don't see "network mode".
Click Access Point Name..
I am now getting 512k vs 150k.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk
Found another trick.
I named the access point the same ATT pta, then I put Phone under the APN setting.
Put your phone into GSM/HSPA (auto mode) let it connect to the network,
then go back and put it as HSPA only.....I'm getting 1-2g+ bypassing the throttle using HSPA+ works like a charm.
Att Throttle Samsung Skyrocket
i did all when i click on Mobile networks i see access point names and network operators and use packet data. When i click on network operators is says Default setup doesnt allow me to do anything. Please help
Same here. Don't see 'network.mode' selection. Please help. Does it have to be rooted?

I am still not sure where/how to pick "GSM/HSPA (Auto mode)" on stock rom. Thats not an option.
What I have are:
WCDMA preferred - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 3G is favored more.
GSM only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
WCDMA only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
GSM auto (PRL) - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more. This one is a bit confusing to me since PRL is associated mostly with CDMA technology and not GSM technology.
CDMA auto (PRL) - The CDMA phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more.
CDMA only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
EvDo only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) - Some phones are equipped with both GSM and CDMA capabilities. This setting appears to just have the phone attempt to stay connected to the data communication type that works the best. (Maybe the Samsung Galaxy S will take advantage of this???)
Unknown - If none of the above fit or the phone is acting weird as far as connecting to the carrier, you will see your preferred network type is set to this
(Cut n paste from another thread, dont know if these are applicable to Skyrocket/LTE)

Thanks for the pointer to the thread but my whole point is that I dont see those options and for some reason my network mode changes dont stick.
So if I disable packet network, switch the APN, change the network mode and then enable the network again, I see that it has gone back to GSM?WCDMA/LTE auto mode again.
So for some reason my network mode changes dont stick. Also, I am on stock rom, could that be the reason!

Custom ROMS give you the options you are looking for.
I am confused ! If the stock radio is *locked* to use LTE if available, why are some people reporting to lock onto HSPA+ network with stock ROM. Are they exploiting some bug?
I have tried various things but I cant switch my radio to anything except GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto mode. It seems to come back to that mode.
Do I need a reboot after changing the mode.
I am using *#*4636#*#* to switch the mode.
Switching APN 's worked like a charm ;o)

some time ago i set the phone to LTE in the testing menu to see what LTE networks it could see. it saw them fine but not for the network i use yet.
the thing is ever since then everytime the phone reboots it seems to default back to LTE only. soi have to ga back in to the test menue and set it back to LTE/ GSM to get the signal back.
Help! why is it still doing this and how can i fix it?
Go to Settings, More... under Data usage, Mobile networks, Preferred network type. Make sure the radio button for 3G is selected.
so i cant leave it on 4g preferred? 4g should be coming to my location in the next coulpe weeks so id not want that to be perminant.
or will setting it to 3g reset things?
ooooooh, did as you said rebooted, 3g locked on. sat back to 4g preferred and rebooted, 3g locked on.
yey! thanks, i dont get why it worked but much appreciated.
I really need help with my device, I searched all over XDA and no-one seems to have the same issue as me.
Here is some information:
1) Nexus 6P (H1511)
2) 6.0.1 Absolute stock, no rom, no root, no custom recovery. Build number MMB29P.
Recently got a new Nexus 6P and imported to Russia. All of the major bands here are supported. And the phone worked excellent for a few weeks, but then it lost all 3G or GSM connectivity. Just randomly, didn't do anything with it, the only thing I did is move to another city but than I got back, the issue didn't resolve. LTE works perfectly but can't call or receive calls, can receive sms though. Reseting network settings and factory reset changed nothing. Tried manualy set network to WCDMA or GSM with *#*#4636#*#* command, the moment I switch to anything besides LTE the connection is lost. Contacted the provider, no problem on their side, my SIM works good in other phones, my phone with other SIMs - no.
I don't think it is a hardware issue because a few times I managed to get everything working after an hour of switching networks and bands with no particular order in the *#*#4636#*#* testing mode.
After a while I figured that if I set phone to "GSM only" on USA bands in testing mode, but at the same time set it to "LTE prefered" in the normal network settings menu. I am able to set phone to Band mode 7 and set the network back to 2G in network settings keeping it on " GSM only" the whole time and only after this compicated algorithm and after a reboot 2G and 3G starts working. But any reboot after that revertes everything back to only LTE stage. Also if I get everything working but than reset network settings everything stops working again.
I have no idea what caused such an issue, I really hope someone can help.
