Received an ASUS Transformer tablet for Xmas. So far only use it as large-screen book reader and checking eMail. AKA Not much knowledge, so if my questions are dumb then my apology.
Need to change or delete my google account to start over - anyone know how?
The author of ROM TOOLBOX told me that I need to ROOT my tablet first - what is this? What are the reasons, pros & cons? Will it involve my warranty? How to do?
Also; Want to delete a few default programs that came with the ASUS, or create & move them to another folder - is possible?
Have also been told by various others that I should install Android-4. Why? How-to?
Any help/suggestions will be seriously appreciated!

Why do you want to change or delete your google account? i ask because depending on why, there may be an easy solution.
heres how to delete if thats your main goal http://tinyurl.com/7zurtj2

Once rooted, you will be able to remove any Bloatware apps that you may wish, just be careful not to delete system dependent apps.
4. Have also been told by various others that I should install Android-4. Why? How-to?
Android 4.0 IceCreamSandwich is the newest version of Android out right now and its simply Awesome.
I think its already available as an Over The Air upgrade for the Transformer

Thank you for the reply and information!
Finally found on this site a "one-Click" Linux Live CD with script for the ASUS TF101 to automate the Rooting process, Ran that and came back with error 0x8 which the CD producer/author says means the device version can't be rooted yet (NvFlash can't connect).
Oh well!
I think this can be very helpful..
Upon looking and looking, I found that the /acct/uid/10221 folder is writable
and in that folder the cgroup.event_control file is not readable.. but is writable
My thoughts are this is a library that gets called.. not sure what calls it but it seems to run at the system level..
I was thinking it could be possible to get the file from an already rooted device, or a 4.04 sdk
and should it be written in Java, leave the current instructions intact, but add ones that import su,
verify and then restore the original file so the phone doesn't try and root itself every 5ms or something.
I'm pretty new to android programming and only have trolling experience, xda saved my SE X10a from being worthless..
But through those adventures with that phone got a good handle on ADB, the SQLite, and config files such as build.prop
To save time, I'm looking for:
1) A readable "cgroup.event_control" file from a 4.04 HTC install so I can rewrite and attempt this..
2) Information regarding the ability to call a java library from an app that's located on the SDCARD.
3) Victims who will try this.. my thoughts out there that some of you have unlocked bootloaders and can
just re flash your phone should things go ape ^%@*.
If any other developers want to use this information.. please do and god speed!
Thanks for your suggestions. But it would be helpful if you post this in General thread where already topic root think tank http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30351905

I'm rooted on 2.20 and I don't have a 10221 folder in the location you mention. I have folders of all sorts of numerical names, but the closest is 10220.

You can't get a readable "cgroup.event_control", not from the ROM itself.
I have tried pulling it from MIUI based on JB, and I just flashed 4.04, still nothing.
it needs to be executable (i think) to pull it.

A little update.. I have done some homework through adb.. and found they are created by an app, and each app has its own group for permissions, I would bet my left shoe it's AT&T ready2go, I bet they fixed it's ability to push apps but forgot some details in the permissions side of things..
also as a note I have moved over to the Root 2.20 ThinkTank in the General section @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30351905
as abhipati pointed out..
I think when an app is installed, it is given a profile via the cgroups for memory allocation, cpu time requisites, etc.. my current mission is finding out which app did this.. I listed more info on cgroups in my post at the link above.. kinda interesting

Good job man. Hopefully it helps those poor souls that are locke din to the AT&T Hell!
Because there is already a thread pertaining to this very topic, and because this doesn't belong in development....

So, let's be honest.. I know that this is a Nook Color board, but given the delay in an HD board coming around, I thought I would throw a bone out there for users. Here are the ground rules for this thread:
1) This only a hold over, and will be moved/closed as appropriate when a correct forum is made.
2) In this forum, this is the only topic where HD/+ content may be posted. Any bleed over to NC threads will be merged were possible, and closed where needed. Consider this thread the entirety of the HD/+ developer board right now.
3) This topic is for true development only; general discussion will be moved to the discussion thread.
With that said, consider this thread open, at least until we know what is happening with an official board..

How about incorporating this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994129 here so the discussion can continue, or is it reopened elsewhere?
That thread is not development ( dev threads must either be the release of software (ROM, kernel, tool), or active development discussion (debugging, error logs, etc). The the guide is handy, it would not belong on a dev board anyway ( when the time comes, its proper place will be general discussion).
Now, if somebody wishes to post a rooting tool, and some guide with it here, that would apply. Otherwise, discussion belongs in the open general thread).

Are you then going to reopen this thread in the general forum/thread?
The thread that is open in the general forum is sufficient to handle current discussion. As I have mentioned before, once I have an actual place to put HD threads, they will all be reopened and moved where appropriate. I am sorry that you do not have an HD forum yet, but would also like to remind you that you are lucky to have ANY HD threads in a board for a totally different device.
As it is, this is not the place for this particular discussion. This is a DEV discussion topic. If it will not be used as such, I will close this thread, and just have everything back under the general thread. Given how many people had been asking for this, I had hoped to see more progress than just being badgered here..
If you users appreciate help given by me, verygreen, someone0 and others, please stop badgering Divine_Madcat to open other threads here in Nook Color. This is not a Nook HD forum and he is giving us a break by keeping this open. Just keep pushing him and we will lose this one too.

Like I promised, I am publishing a cwm image that people can boot off sdcard. Grab it here.
To install: gunzip and dd into an sdcard (not a partition, but entire device) whose content you don't care about.
This is targeted at people experimenting with root only at this point, so that they don't need to undergo the full 8-reboots-factory reset scenario.
When you screwed something up in system, just put this sdcard in, and it'll boot on the next reboot cycle.
adb into it, and:
Code:
busybox mount /dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.1/by-name/system /system
fix whatever breakage you introduced, and then umount /system, remove sdcard and reboot.
This is a very minimally functional thing right now, uboot menu and all other fancy stuff is disabled for now.
More full-featured thing and device tree are still coming, hopefully very soon now.
Thank you, verygreen! Just in time. I semi-bricked my HD+ again messing with framework-res.apk and it won't boot. I was afraid I would have to 8 fail reset again. This should get me out of it. Will report back.
Edit: Worked! Got it to boot to your CWM. Had to install a new driver (Windows) because it has a new device ID. Chose Android ADB Interface from list. Installed fine. ADB worked. Serial number is a dummy 123456789... ADB shelled to mount /system per above command. Pushed original framework-res.apk and rebooted. Victory! Thank you so much.
I have a NST that I rooted awhile back that I love. My brother wants to get a Nook HD or HD+ for his wife and wants to know if I can root that as well. I am having trouble finding specific resources for that. Is the Nook HD+ perm rooted yet? Are there still some work that needs to be done with development? It's a newer device so I would completely understand that.

Thank you for this.
When a CM10 is released and we install it to the sd card , can we still use this sd card for storage etc or does it all have to be taken up by cm10 ?
Also with the current way you are getting past the bootloader does this mean cm10 will only work from an internal sd card and we wouldn't be able to load it from internal memory ?

I don't think he can, at least not initially. Mainly the problem is the locked bootloader. It's like you have a PC that don't allow you to reinstall windows/linux on the HDD/SSD. But it still allow you to boot from USB/CDROM/floppy. Sure in case of linux (not too familiar w/ android, so I won't say that it can for sure), you can have just the kernel on a floppy and the rest of the OS on the HDD. I know some people do this to lock down their machine. The entire OS is sitting on a HDD encrypted with one missing part, the kernel. Then you boot it from the USB which have the kernel and the decryption key for that HDD. It's like a physical authentication method and can be combine with password and that make it two-factor authentication. Then again whoever does that better backup that USB key, or he/she would be toasted if that USB become corrupt or lost.

Booting from internal storage is possible too, but I we are not in the state yet where people should be replacing BN software with CM, as such I think sdcards provide enough playground for now to mature the product before we move further.
Noob question, since I am using Windows, how do I 'dd' the image onto the sd card?
TIA
PS found this for other Windows users:

PSS ok, that worked but I couldn't find what I horsed up. Just had to reboot 8 times and start over...

You can use a few different software in windows to write the image to SD card. Try https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/+download, I personally use version 0.5 if I have to us a windows machine

Thanks, yes, my link got me there too.
Divine_Madcat,
This one needs to be moved to dev and renamed. It has verygreen's CWM in it. Or at least move that post over there somehow.
edit: you moved his rooting thread there. Why don't you just move his CWM post to that thread and close this thread.

Hey Guys,
I'm having a couple of issues with setting up adb on my Linux Box (Xubuntu 12.04) I downloaded Android SDK and installed Platform-Tools. I've tried most of the methods on XDA but when I "./adb devices" I get nothing. I have a Micromax A87 which is a rebranded version of Mito A78 (Anybody heard of it???).
I would like help with another issue too. I recently got into theming, I edited some .pngs (not 9s) and compiled it, then signed it and zipaligned it but when I put it in /system/app and rebooted, it worked only partially. The one's with the default mode as RGB work, but the one's with the default mode "indexed" didn't. Does Anybody have any Ideas???
BTW, I use Gimp and I change the mode to RGB before editing them.
Thanks in Advance...

Might be worth reading this before starting another thread - [GUIDE] - XDA New User Guide - Getting started on XDA, I know you're new, you're obviously eager to do something based on your other thread, but keep this in mind, nothing you've got to ask (which so far) hasn't been asked or discussed many a time before, so if themeing is what you want to get into, click the second link in my sig, read it, bookmark it then try and put into practice what it is you're trying to learn, and if at first you don't succeed, starting a new thread to ask a question that you'll probably figure out the answer to whilst you wait for someone to reply with an answer you could have probably found by typing your thread title into Google, isn't going to speed things up or help you learn.
There are some links to using apktool with Linux in my guide btw which should be of help.
THANKS, XPERIENCED!!!
I already read your theming guide and about 5 others on XDA Forums and I decided to get a better understanding of Themes.
I still face an issue, I can't setup ADB! I've tried most of the methods on XDA Forums and everything I can think of, it isn't working. I did use Google, most of them simply don't work. My question is not "How do I set-up ADB on my Linux?", It's "I can't setup ADB, can anybody help me?"
*sigh* Can anybody please help me???
EDIT: Solved it, adb working now!
Hello:
I am terribly confused and I hope that someone can help me to understand a few things! I am sorry if I don't understand all the links but they seem to go round and round. Right no I have no less that 27 tabs open trying to figure out the first step.
What am I doing? That much I hope I can explain! I am trying to install (if that is the correct word?) a recommended form of Ubuntu onto my rooted Transformer and I am using the Guide "Guide for SBK1 Install of [Win32/64][Dual Boot] Tubuntu for x3Maniac Thread" by TomTcom.
So, to my first question (probably the first of many): This guide was written to help "newcomers", of which I am definitely one. But, right under that statement comes the statement "The Tubuntu installer application will not install the updated kernels for SBK1 devices and the manual procedure in post #2 will tell you what you need to do." Does that mean I'm actually supposed to start at Post #2? But Post #2 assumes I already have "Tubuntu installation directories", which I don't have so I can't locate the two files. So far I have downloaded the file "tubuntu.img.tar.gz" and I have used 7z to create "tubuntu.img" but I can't open that and don't know what to do with it!
I am attempting to be a user of Ubuntu on my Transformer, not a developer - I take my hat off to all of you that have put your Transformers in harm's way developing the techniques and software that I want to use, but the instructions are terribly confusing for someone not familiar with all of the terms!
Any help would be most appreciated and I thank you in advance.
Sparky
I have responded in the main thread. Also, don't treat post 1 and 2 as steps 1 and 2. You need to complete post 1 stuff first.
