[Q] Droid X Rooting Questions - Droid X Themes and Apps

I've had my DX for almost a year, and from the day I got it I heard about rooting. I know that rooting can allow you to do some really awesome things to your Android phone, but I also hear that it can come with some problems. What are the major complications that can go along with rooting and what are the risks?

There are really no risks i can think of from just rooting you phone the problems come when you flash roms but even then you cant permanently hurt your phone cause you can always restore to factory with sbf file

In the forum search look fo "z4root". I used it to root my epic . It took a few uninstall-reinstall-reboot-run-repeat cycles but I am successfully rooted and didn't even need a PC
Epic is as Epic does
Thanks ill try that.

Is that even on the market anymore?
I used one click lag fix to root mine

I tried the z4root and another one click root I found on the forums nneither of them worked. Probably because im running 2.2. I found a one click root using a computer so I think that will be my next attempt

App Back Up No Root

Hi,
I am using a Captivate not rooted. If something goes wrong with it and I use a market backup app for NOT rooted phones...
1) When I restore the apps will they appear in the Market under "My Apps" and will it detect updates when available?
2) Will it preserve the settings in each of my apps?
I have so many apps on my Captivate but just scared that something might go wrong and it'll be a pain to restore everything from scratch.
Thank you.

Which app backups apps without root again?
Which app would you use for non rooted phone?
I know of only two good ways to keep everything and they are only good for root users.
As far as keeping your settings... again the only way to do that would be titanium backup which needs root (but does sync to dropbox)
I have deal with building my phone from the ground up with out TB or App backup....
If you find anything that works for you with out rooting I would love to know.
Rooting for the most part is easy and safe (if you not trying to do coustom ROMS) and very easy to unroot if you ever need to return the phone to at&t. I have dealt with it a few times... if you have any questions feel free to ask..
I'm not all about the ROMs but being able to backup and also install non market apps... like the amazon appstore... with out a computer is very nice
Good Luck
PM me & let me know how it goes

Yeah you guys are absolutely right it seems like TB and others all require root. I was thinking of using apps like ES Explorer or Astro which has an app backup feature. I guess those don't work the same?
My Captivate is working like a beast right now and it scares me to think if something goes wrong then I'll have to spend hours setting up everything again.

I would recommend rooting the phone, then you can use any backup method you want.

Alright I am going to use z4root to root my Captivate on Rogers then use TB to backup.
Z4root seems to be easiest. Am I missing any steps?

Z4root does not work for the Captivate. If you have a PC the best and easiest way to root is from XDA called Super One Click. I ahec used it to root and un root more than my fair share of time. It is simply and easy to use. And with just one more click it lets you do the off market app install thay I was talking about before. Which you would have to sideload the z4root anyway.
Good Luck
PM me & let me know how it goes

Thank you for all your help. I will check out SuperOneClick.
I was reading the z4root thread and it said it works for all variants of Galaxy S so I thought that would apply to the Captivate.
I never had any trouble installing non market apps maybe because Rogers in Canada is different from AT&T.
Thanks again.

you can backup without root using "mybackup" its free and its in the market, and you can select to backup the app and the data, but if you want to root the "superoneclick" is the best!!

Have not had time to root yet but soon hopefully.
Thanks, maybe I'll try MyBackup first before root.

Just tried Z4Root and it didn't work on my Captivate. Used it cuz it seemed like the simplest.
Going to use MyBackup but too bad it doesn't restore market links unless you are rooted.

Yeah... I had the same thing happen to me... the super one click works great... all you need is a pc and be able to follpw simple directions... so I think you're good on that one
Good Luck

More info please. What did you do?
What makes you believe that the update is for GB v2.3? Is this an OTA update from Verizon?
Sorry my question wasn't worded good. So here it goes LOL, I downloaded one of the leaks of Gb for the TB and I placed the file on my SD card and renamed it and shut the phone off held power and volume. Then I went through the steps and it started updating itself the when it finished it said error failure to update software to new. Once again thank you for responding to this I really appreciate all and any help.

Rooted or unrooted currently? I assume unrooted?

If you downloaded the RUU_Mecha_GINGERBREAD_S_VERIZON_WWE_2.10.605.1_Radio_0.01.78.0802w_3_NV_8K_1.41_9K_1.64_release_209273_signed.exe
Do not place on the SD card, is a Windows application to update your TB via Data cable.
Takes about 10-15 mins.
This is exactly as I did and worked without any problems.
On a further note...
A couple of days ago I rooted using the Revolutionary tool and flashed Clockwork recovery using ROM Manager then created a backup. Now I no longer have problems with constant ads, no verizon bloatware, and a full backup img of my rooted Gingerbread TB.
Unrooted can't don't know much about rooting with the method used. Actually I'm kinda scared, now I did root my Eris and my Incredible and LG Ally. But don't glum have to know adb.

There should be an unrooted zip file that you could flash via hboot floating around here some where or might look on Rootzwiki site as well.
I would also check the md5 of the files to make sure they match the numbers posted by the OP before I attempted to flash it

You guys were awesome thanks again. Nice to know when someone gets stuck there are people willing to help. And think I'm going to attempt rooting my TB. I know if I get stuck ill be ok.

Root

I have been looking for a way to root my droid pro since i got it. I am having problems on other forums.
Is there a wiki or a thread that somebody can direct me to that will show me how to downgrade to another android version and root my phone upgrade the version and keep root?
I am not asking for a one click method or anything lazy like that i will spend 3 hours typing commands into terminal on unix if that is what it takes to root my phone.
Even if the guaranteed method you point me to has a 95% chance of bricking my phone i will still try it i am determined to get this thing rooted.
Thanks for all help in advance.

Start small and slow, it's really hard to mess things up. The more you do the more you'll learn.
