[Q] Differences from vanilla Android - HTC Sensation

I've only used vanilla android devices (nexus one, g2), and I'm thinking about getting the sensation. Other than the obvious differences in the UI, what else is different about sense devices like this? I've read stuff about them not automatically syncing contacts with Google. Is that true? Can I replace the launcher with one from the market?

I actually far prefer Sense devices, although you can download a different launcher from the market, none are as polished as sense is. One of the greatest things being sense's widgets. As far as syncing with contacts I might be biased but I think sense actually handles this a little more flawlessly than most devices. It will sync with pretty much any major account you might have, email, twitter, facebook, google etc. I love the sensation, I came from an htc mytouch 4g which was also an outstanding phone. Do it and if you don't like sense you can pretty much find any kind of launcher you want on the market, although I highly doubt you will be disappointed.

If you get S-OFF and start playing with custom ROMs there are a few AOSP ones out there. CM9 for example. Virtuous Inquisition has Sense backend but has had the UI de-sensed as much as possible.
At the moment I'm playing with CM10 Alpha/Beta.
I have never had an issue with syncing contacts with Gmail, stock or custom ROMs. I think the issue you refer to is that as standard with sense you can say where to sync the contact when you create one, Phone, Gmail... The Phone contact can then be synced with Outlook etc. via HTCSync and not with Gmail !

Sense has a few apps and Widgets that other launchers dont have.
No that's not true, Sense can sync contacts with Google, Twitter, Facebook, etc.
Yes you can use any launcher from the market.

[Q] Mail apps - which are interchangeable between Sense, AOSP

Looks like there are a handful of different mail apps (AOSP, DesireHD Sense type, older Sense type, Galaxy mail, Dell mail, etc.) and I am looking for one that has a unified view of several accounts (1 Exchange, 1 Yahoo, 1 Gmail, etc.) and which can support the show conversations view like the DesireHD can - that can work on CM 6.1. I don't know if they require the Sense framework of if CM just prefers vanilla, and even if it might work I don't know if it would just be a single apk pull from a ROM or if it would be multiple files. Anyway, I think this is a general Android issue with email "fragmentation" (loose use of the word) and it isn't specific to my Evo so I post it here. Would be great if we had a table for this, like we do with ROMs, to say what features each has, what files are involved, and if it is AOSP only, Sense only, or both....Anyway, if you know how I could pull this off I'd appreciate the info.
Your requirements are a bit all over the place, but pulling from multiple accounts is something K9 Mail can do. If it has a "conversation view" I don't know, I wouldn't use something like that..
It's a great mail client.

Really? I don't think so, but the question may have been mixed in with the complaint. Here is what I need:
1. has a unified view of several accounts (1 Exchange, 1 Yahoo, 1 Gmail, etc.)
2. support the show conversations view
3. can work on CM 6.1
The rest of it was a bit of shocked grumbling that with like 6 different versions of Mail out there that no one has ever really tried to differentiate between them the way they do with 100 other things on every custom ROM. I mean, we get 500 post threads about how to get circular battery percentage indicators in a theme.
Anyway...thanks for the reply. I'll look at K9 again. I had a G1 and used it early on and it was way better than what we had until Android 2.0 or so, but then I thought it fell behind.

Facebook for Android or Facebook for HTC sense. Opinions.

THe HTC desire being my first HTC phone I had never used the sense UI or any of its features previously, so had only had experience with the official facebook for android app from the Market.
Ive just set up facebook for htc sense with the friend stream etc and I'm rather impressed by it. Just wondered what your thoughts are on both these apps? here are mine.
Facebook for Android:
Pros
Has the chat function
Official app from facebook so gets updated (eventually) with new features, although still way behind the iphone app apparently.
Cons
Doesnt allow tagging of photos
Doesnt allow you to remove/delete a post/comment or that you have made or un-like something.
Facebook for HTC Sense
Pros
Allows tagging of photos
Allows multiple upload of photos to albums etc..
Integrates extreemely well with the rest of HTC sense UI, and the phone features such as the people app, gallery etc..
Cons
(most of these are things that I am not 100% sure on, so they are more like a question than a statement)
Not sure if the app gets updated when new features come out on facebook, or being as the app is shipped with the phone is it pretty much that what you get now is what it will always be, and no changes, or do HTC release updates for the sense features?
I dont think the check in feature is available with this?
I also dont think this app allowed you to delete a comment/post, althought I havent tried it yet, if it is possible, how is it done? Same with un-like...
What are you guys thoughts on both of these apps? Which do you prefer out of the 2?
I've been facing this same issue for past 24 hours. I needed batch upload for photos. I assumed, oficial fb app should be able to do that. Well, horse hockey. It's not even able to move photos from album to album or delete album. Before I discovered that Fb for sense is able to do that, I uploaded it via email. All in all, fb app from fb lackes many features, some even included in web version for phones (touch).
well you can always choose between the two, you dint have to just use one
persinally i think sense is amazing! (wish i had it on my sgs2)
the android fb is mediocore, so i use it mainly fir chat.
so i use the facebook mobile site mainly! it has the most info on news feed etc.
I personally still use the m.facebook.com website for facebook interaction on the phone. I found the facebook application a little too limited and clunky.
Although didn't know that it could enable FB chat, until I read the posts above...so thanks.
This way I don't get constant Facebook notifications, but get the ones that I have choosen to get through my FB settings as alerts through new emails. I use both Yahoo and Google mail applications.
I have still enabled Facebook for Sense, so that I still get the status updates, birthdays etc which then add value to my users from Google contacts...
take a look at FriendCaster

Gmail vs. HTC Mail?

I know it's a subjective vague question - but what do you guys use? Obviously I'm speaking of a gmail account, not yahoo, etc...For non-gmail accounts obviously htc mail is the way to go. But I only use my gmail.
I've been using the main gmail app since I've been on Android until a couple weeks ago, when I finally tried HTC mail. I did this primarily for the fancier UI, and deeper Sense integration (quick launch widget, etc).
But I'm realizing that HTC mail, while impressive in its display and interface, seems to not work 100% smoothly. For instance, I've noticed a couple emails that didn't show up in my inbox in HTC mail, but are visible in the stock gmail app and on my gmail on my computer. Once HTC mail "misses" an email it will not appear upon refreshing, weird...this hasn't bee a widespread problem, but still if it happens to "miss" that one important email, that's not good...also, you lose a lot of the labeling and starring functionality that gmail has. Also - another thing is you can only sync up to one months' worth of mail with HTC, but with the native gmail app you can access all your emails. Theoretically, HTC allows you to search the server for older emails, but for some reason it's not working for me. Every now and then I need to dig up an old email, and HTC doesn't seem to want to let me do it.
Anyway - sorry if this is a lame thread, but I've been thinking about what I want to do and figured it was worth throwing it out in the general section to see what other people think.
I think, even though HTC mail is much prettier and 'fancier' - I'm going to go back to native gmail, because while it's not as exciting of an app, it seems to generally work better.
Thoughts?

aww man sorry to hear that. well think of email as speculation. would you rather hear it from the horses mouth? HTC mail is nice ... I think its for emails that dont have their own app (ie company or personal website)
Maybe its the ROM.When I was using sense 3.0 i ran both of the apps you mentioned and they came in simultaneously.

I actually think I figured the "missed" emails out - I have labels set up in gmail where emails from certain people or with certain tags, get put in a label. In gmail, all of these emails appear in my inbox as well as their respective folders...but in htc, it seems that these emails appear ONLY in the folders (labels) they are linked to, but NOT in the general inbox...which is another thing I don't like lol. I don't want to have to jump between several different folders to try to find an email. I only use the folders when I want to group a certain label together for easier viewing and for archiving, but not to actually read incoming mail...
It's too bad - I love how integrated HTC mail is in Sense...whereas with gmail, it's just an icon. With HTC you have a choice of widgets, unread count on the icon, display in quick launch...btw I'm running TDJ's port of the Sense 3.5 Runny rom...love it!
But on topic, looks like I'm heading back to native gmail. I just wish that update didn't remove 3rd party access...or at least I wish gmail would implement an unread count option for the icon or a widget...

Love it too but i think with a few more updates itll be ready to go with widget functionality.
I was running that for a day but some of the features werent working so I went back to MIUI.
TDJ has MT4G on lock giving people that love full animations (sense) and minimalists (MIUI) what they want.

Yeah I tried MIUI for a day myself. It was cool, different, but ultimately I preferred the more traditional 'android' setup. I was on cm7 for a good bit, but I always wind up back on Sense. I guess its vain of me but i just think the software feels 'higher end'
Gmail is superior to me for one reason only: push email. HTC mail does not offer this.

I get much better battery life using HTC mail set to sync every 30 minutes.

[Q] whatsapp contact pictures with various roms

Hey nerds,
I write this here in the developer section cause I'm not really shure if it fits in the general secction.
I tried different ROMs during the last weeks and instead of one I used the FACEBOOK contact pictures are not showing in whatsapp. If the contact uses a google account contact picture everything works well.
I tried different workarounds to fix it but nothing helped.
-Installing whatsapp from the market, new login, restore message backup or not
-restoring a titanium backup from a working rom including and exccluding data
-erasing app data, stop the app, deleting app cache, actualizing contact
-install whatsapp first then facebook and vice versa
...nothing works
If I use a ROM where the pictures where not showing from the beginning there I can find no fix.
I tried the following roms
LBC Mod 0.6 - everything works fine
Runnymede S 3.3a amd former versions - don't work
MIUI - don't work
CM 7.1 (final and latast nightlys) - don't work
SAGA 3D 3.0 an former versions - don't work
If I switch the contact pictures to google it works but I do not have pictures in all contacts there.
Only ROM it works is LBC which is still a very good ROM but a little otdated and I definetly like sense 3.5
Is there a known fix I didn't tried or found here on XDA oder google?
thanks
Nick
I've had this issue myself too...
From what i've learned over the course of the last couple of months, i see that the Whatsapp contact pictures work on all the Sense 3.0 ROMs i have tried....(The GoAPK leaked release by Proxuser, Hyperion by Lowveld) and DO NOT work on any of the Sense 3.5 ROMs (Runny ports by both Proxuser and Lowveld). I must be honest, i never tried CM7 or MIUI... I'm a regular sense guy.
I figure it is probably because of the way Facebook integration has been implemented in Sense 3.5....instead of the separate Facebook for HTC Sense account, and Facebook regular account, there is now a consolidated account in 3.5 which embraces the both. That has screwed things up for Whatsapp somehow...
The photo integration is working well with third party apps and Whatsapp shows contact pictures from, say, Friendcaster Pro, but not from native Facebook. I've solved the problem by assigning pics manually to contacts uncer the "Phone Contacts" account and they show up in Whatsapp just fine. I know its painful, but hey, whatever works, right?
However, other third party apps have easy access to facebook photos from my phonebook, so it's not like sense is at fault here...
I think this needs to be looked at by the developers of Whatsapp, rather than try to overhaul an entire version of Sense. I have been in touch with the developers of the app and put in a request for Sense 3.5 integration fix.
Now just waiting patiently for a bug-fix update from Whatsapp. I suggest more people mail them so this issue is taken seriously... Just a thought.
Cheers.
So I'm looking forward to a fix by the developers. Thanks for answering.

I have the same issue - try the app syncmypix which has been suggested on androidforums.
Ive tried it and it works - now have contact pics for contacts from facebook or joined with facebook and they feed through to whatsapp - so it is a valid workaround...
Right now I am back on LBC (best ROM for my use so far and very good battery life) - but synched my contact pict in google manually. I dont't have that much facebook contacts (I know them all in real life ) so this was not that much work. So evertime I play with sense 3.5 (which I really like) I will have my contact pics in whatsapp. Nevertheless, this seems to be problem on a lot of devices using facebook app and whatsapp (I searched a lot) - so this is not a problem with our devices using sense 3.5.
I'm on a different phone and rom but Sense 3.6 and is having the same problem!!
This is neither sense nor any rom related. The problem is caused by whatsapp itself. By any reason the app is not able to show contact pictures from the Facebook app itself.
In sense 3.0 Roms and below you could use Facebook for sense to sync the contacts - no problem for whatsapp. The newer sense versions are using the Facebook app for syncing. If you use a third party app like friendcaster the pics are shown correctly.
I recommend to sync the pics with your Google account manually, this is what I did. And then use the Google pics in contacts. I know this is a little work to do and there are apps in the store you can use therefore. But you only have to do it once.

[Q] Facebook Photo Contact Syncing

One of my favorite features was being able to sync my contacts from Facebook to my phone in Jellybean so that all of my contacts used their Facebook photo for my contacts on my phone.
Either I am not seeing how to do that in Android 4.4 or that feature was removed.
My Facebook account is synced to my phone and when I go to it under accounts in my settings, it doesn't have anything in there.
Can someone point out how to do this?
That was never part of Jellybean! You must come from an device with UI like touchwiz or sense..

Wow. Yeah, i had an HTC One X+. Sad face.
I guess I had just assumed that was how all android phones were. Dang.
So does anyone know any way to do this then? Maybe a 3rd party app or something?

Download the app Sync.Me. I've been using it for a while now and it seems to do a pretty good job at syncing Facebook contact pictures. Can also do LinkedIn, if you have one.
Ubersync works well and you can choose the quality
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ro.weednet.contactssync
As I don't know the name but only that it exists, you can google for it as good as i could.
So check it out yourself. There are some apps who can do what you want ! (ofc not as good as it is implemented in sense)
Download Haxsync - best app there is for syncing contact timeline information and photos
I'm gonna give Sync.ME a try. Thanks everyone!
