I have 3 or 4 conversations that I had saved for personal reasons that are over 1500 messages long and I no longer need them. Every time I try to delete the texts, my phone just freezes or gets really laggy until I have to just reboot or pull the battery. Is there an easier way or better way to delete threads with that many texts?
Delete one thread each night before going to bed. When you wake up it should be gone. Repeat each night until they're gone.

Yes in all seriousness I have done exactly that, I'm a text hoarder too. On some of my previous smart phones the phone would seem to freeze, but if i left it alone a few hours when i got back the threaded conversation was gone.
Rooted Thunderbolt on BAMF Sense 3.0 RC 4 with MR2 radio and latest dreamKernel.
you might try using handcent for your sms's. Just deleted a convo over 1000+ messages in a few seconds. Didn't bog the phone down either.
i have had a few conversations not nearly as large as yours before deleting
and it did seem to take a while.
I had the exact same problem. Try deleting them before you go to bed and see if they are gone in the morning. It took mine like almost an hour to delete 2000. It looks like its doing nothing, but eventually the disappear.
Messages settings delete old threads look there...or applications manage applications what ever sms program clear cache next step clear data...something goes south restart phone......

I use a program from the market called "delete old messages" - the free version. It has a few less options than paid, but it deletes my messages very nicely. I started using it when I had my Eris since the phone would get so bogged down.
Probably would be wise to limit message count to 200 or less as well. Much more and it really drags rump.

Hi i'm using EnergyROM 'Phoenix 2' (21877) ★|Nov 27|Manila 2.1
But! with every single ROM including stock ATT Fuze ROM i had this issue, and finally i cant take it anymore. Also i had phone replaced 2 times ( physical damage). So its not hardware issue or ROM, its Windows Mobile seems like... How can I fix it?
While in regular windows threaded sms application, finishing up conversation and hitting 'x' to go back to all messages view will cause a phone to freeze for up to 4 minutes, 9 times out of 10. It will freeze up the phone. The only solution, if i dont want to wait, is to hold answer button to open task manager and kill the sms process.
it is extremely aggravating, i think you can see that in my post.... Please does anyone have a solution? i tried searching
Ok... i might be completely wrong on this (i hate threaded sms, so turn it off!) but i've read before that the sms app can take some time to process the threading. This was noted & commented on after restoring a backup, not in general use. If you have lots of messages, it might be worth simply allowing the sms app to do its thing for 20 mins when you're not trying to use anything, and seeing if it makes any difference.
If not, sorry - i'm out of ideas.
Sup,
This is not the first time this happens to me. I had the old Dash/Excalibur and had installed the Evo rom for it as well and now the same thing is happening on my new Dash 3G. After some time of using this mobile OS (it's been about 1-2weeks), text messaging is basically unusable and unresponsive.
To load up the txt messages can take literally a minute, pressing the back button from a conversation can take a minute, sometimes txt msging cant even open up, etc.
I dont know if this happens because my sent messages get saved to a folder so it slows everything down, but i'd like to know a solution to it or i'll have to revert back to the original rom that came with the phone.
Anyone have a solution to the problem?
Thanks
Terminate the Text messaging application in Task manager every day or every other day, and all will be fine.
Gmail on my Vibrant is doing the craziest thing - randomly. It takes messages that I write and breaks them up into a ton of smaller, partial messages. It is correct on Gmail and in Thunderbird, but in Gmail on my phone it displays very oddly.
I've attached a few screenshots to show what I'm talking about.
In the first screenshot, you see that it says the conversation has 24 messages. This should be 2. I sent one, and got one reply.
In the second screenshot, you see the way it shows a bunch from me one after the other.
In the third you see how the first email shows the beginning of the actual email, then the second shows what was in the first, plus a little bit more. Then the third adds on to that, and so on and so on until, 23 emails later it finally puts the entire thing.
The fourth screenshot hints at the problem - notice how some of the email is in purple, as if Gmail thinks that it is part of "quoted text."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is really weird and it's pretty damn frustrating, too. Any ideas?
EDIT: I should also point out two other things I forgot to mention... First, this email (and I think all the others that have done this) were actually sent from my desktop/laptop and sycned with the phone. Also, looking at timestamps on the screenshots, it shows different times for each one... however, they were obviously all sent at once - in the web client it shows correctly.
I had this happen on my fascinate once and I killed the app, came back and it was fine.

No such luck. Kill the app, nothing. Restart the phone, nothing.
Hello,
last week my HTC Sensation started random rebooting. Sometimes it lasts longer alive (up to 15 minutes). Though what is interesting, is that my SMS Icon has (1) on it, while after opening the native SMS app it does not display anything, nor I am able to recieve any more SMS (aaand usually it crashes after I open the SMS app).
I do not ever delete my messages (well ... why should I?)
Could it be, that there is some SMS hack which causes the stock ROM to crash?
the phone is not rooted (except S-OFF, which I did just to see if it goes), no crappy apps installed, running only stock ROM. Since 2 months I am not able to install HTC Twitter client (it reboots and I get a blue Android with an exclamation mark and cannot do anything more) and on my SD Card I have ~160MB Free - could that an issue aswell?
Edit: the phone heats up like crazy
It's because the phone is overheating. I have the Xe and it's a nightmare: usually just take the back off, and take the battery out for ~10 minutes and put everything back in.

tried that, doesn't work
had the battery out for 4 days already, even the time settings had been reset.
Curious though: it started rebooting after first day I went skiing with this phone (wanted to do some Runkeeper stats). Outside temperatures never dropped below -10 celsius - could that cause the issue
Have a look to see what free memory you have on the phone and on the SD card, if the phone memory is getting low (below 40 mb ) or the sim memory is low (below 400 MB) then its time to do some hasrh house keeping
SD card is simple if you can replace it with a bigger (and faster version)
If its phone memory, a factory data reset is the simple way around it then use something like App2sd to keep the phone memory free
Lack of free memory is the number 1 problem for freezing and reboot issues into our call centre for android phones
Ooh if I were you, I'd delete those text messages. I save mine as well using SMS to Gmail Backup and have a limit of 70 SMS messages and 5 MMS messages. The rest of it gets backed up.
I don't know if I'm right or wrong but from experience.. saving ALL of those text messages up can slow it down. I saved up to about 20,000 with one person and it was pretty slow. (This was back then when I had an older phone though) However! Deleting it did help. I wouldn't suggest keeping all your messages... imagine if you had a million and the SMS app had to open up and load a million messages. that would take forever, and in your case, might not even work!
Seeing as how you save all those texts... I also doubt that you've wiped your phone. I suggest 1) delete your messages (or back them up) 2) factory reset if it's not yet working properly!
Some times when Im viewing Text messages, they dont appear in order properly, Like I will send a text and it will be higher up and one I received before, as if I sent it before that, which clearly I didnt as it was a reply.
and when I restart my phone sometimes it will send a random text message that I sent ages ago to the last person I was texting which can confuse the other person.
anyone have these issues?
yeah i know what you are refferring to....download sms time fix from the market, enable it, and under adjustment method choose use phone's time
it use to happen to me all the time, still Happens to my wife all the time(she has mytouch 4g). the only time it happens to me or her is when we use third party SMS apps never on stock sms
Text out of order:
1-Do you have a third party sms app? ie: gosms pro, handcent?
It use to happen to me all the time but ever since I started keeping up with the amount of text in a single thread the problem does not happen any more what so ever. For example: text between me and my wife I don't let pass 150 text. Anyone else that I might speak to on a somewhat regular bases I don't let pass 30 and people I text once an a blue moon I erase a couple hours later after I'm done texting them. It does sound like a little work to keep up with but better to do it then scramble your **** up (at least for me). My wife never keeps up with her text like I do and like every 2 to 3 weeks it's starts glitching and doing all that you have said. It got so bad one time that she had to fully uninstall gosms pro them restart her phone cause stock was force closing.
2- to fix it just delete all threads and clear app cache and app settings, you do this by going to phone settings/applications/find app then clear all. If it still does not work then your going to have to uninstall your SMS client (which can be a ***** cause you tricked it out to your liking)
Old text resending after power cycle:
1- I ****ing hate when this happens. It usually happens to an old text that had problems sending and ether never sends and you leave it alone and/or after a minute the app tried again and it sends successfully. But still resends after power cycle.
2- the only way I have seen this problem not happen to much is if you just try to resend the text your self and/ or erase it from your text thread.
You don't have a third party SMS client and are using stock and experiencing these issues:
1- **** out of luck, can't help you there lol. Never happened to me. Suggest you restart your phone and/or clear cache and SMS settings
I hope you or anyone else can find this helpful. Thanks for reading at the very least

Agreed with the sms time fix. However, it doesn't always fix it... Still a pain once in a while. For what it's worth, I've always had this issue with HTC phones. For some reason, the timestamps just suck and for that reason among other reasons, HTC won't be my next phone. I somehow grew to love sense though
Never had the issue with my galaxy s, it doesnt normally do it often, but today its done it pretty much every text. hopefully this fixes it, do love my XE

Check your time settings..
I once had this kind of problem where all of my text (sent and received) does not appear at the bottom of the thread (where they should be). After some troubleshooting (restarting, re-installation of Go-SMS etc), problem was still existed. When I examining my phone, I found out that my time was reset back to 1970's and I remember that day that I detach my battery to my handset thus the time went back to the Jan 1 1970. So I revert the back the date to the current and my posting of message is back to normal.
