The free and amazing mp4forHD.
You can find it on this forum, it's made for HTC HD but it also has a profile the HD2
MeGui - nothing beats it!
Toss3,
but for getting best results in MeGUI advanced experience is needed.
Could you do us the favour and post your most important settings for
best results on HD2 here? Would appreciate it
Best regards, Olioaglio

Search for p-krill's posts. I'm using the same settings he posted in this thread.
TMPGEnc.XPress converter looks so good but its taking me 5 hrs plus too convert a 2hr movie
the quality looks immaculate with the settings provided
am trying formfactory now so let you know how it goes but it seems alot quicker and has alot of functions aswell
Have a look at the HTC HD Touch Video Converter, get also really nice results. And you can use Subtitles too.
TMPGEnc.XPress
There have been really quite a lot of threads on this subject before: original poster, you might like try to searching the forum before posting a question to see if it has been asked before.
A couple of examples of earlier threads: here, here and here.
Sadly, such threads never seem come to any useful conclusions. This is partly because everyone piles in and automatically recommends whichever app they use, without stating why they recommend it, or what benefits it has over any other app, or what parameters they recommend using with it. It's also because I don't think ever completely nailed down the optimum encoding parameters. This thread got some way towards that goal, but I don't think we ever came to any firm conclusions.
If you are not sure what you are doing then I recommend MP4ForHD, which you can download here. The results are perhaps not quite optimal, but they're pretty good, and it's fairly idiot proof. Use the default HD2 profile, to begin with.
I would steer clear of the Touch HD "Video Encoding GUI" as its settings are too conservative for the HD2; it trades off video quality for ease of processing in a way that is necessary on a Touch HD but not on an HD2.
If you are more of an expert then I suggest MediaCoder.
To elaborate on my settings.
Install WinMEnc
Add my profile to the profile folder.
Load WinMenc, add you files, select my profile from the dropdown list, check 'fit to width' on the 'Video' tab, and encode.
Play the mp4 in HTC Album.
Example video
I've batch encoded Dexter season 4 720p with the above settings, and it looks amazing.

Simply because everyone has their own standards of what is good/good enough/who cares? There isn't a single encoding method that is the "best", per se.
For me, I have ended my quest for encoding specs, and I've already listed the software and parameters I've used. I'm sure someone out there will disagree, saying that other parameters would make it better in terms of size/quality, with or without CUDA (and the list goes on and on), and kudos to them. Personally I'm more than happy with my encodes, I'm glad that kr00t0n finds it useful too.

Recently I'm having troubles with this profile for encoding mkvs (mostly music videos)...They tend to crash a little into the encoding. You have this problem?
However if I encode them into avi with similar encoding specs, it works. It looks like encoding h264 into h264 causes a problem for mkvs, at least for me.

Hi,
i downloaded HTC touch HD video converter 1.21 version.
and converted a 2.5GB 720p mkv movie to 800x480 900kbps 160kb audio.
i am interested in mainly converting mkv to hd2 format.
i have a duo 2 core 8400 processor and it took me like 4 hrs.
i read somewhere that on HD2 keeping the video bitrate above 700kbps doesnt make a difference and just ends up using more battery while playback.
is that true??
what should be the best settings i should keep in order to get good results?
also is there any other way to convert in a shorter time than this??
will keeping a lower video bitrate decrease the total time??
i know many of you will say trial and error is the best way, but i am asking to get a head start as 4+hrs to convert one movie is alot of time.
anyways thanks for answering guys
i am curious too about the questions geronemo has, maybe some would like to share their experiences here?
I use badaboom it use your Nvidia GPU wich is much faster If you want the right settings for it ask me. 30 minutes video is 6 minutes converting video.
I was wondering what everyone is using to convert movies to play on your captivate. I tried handbrake with no success. (probably just don't how to use it). Any help would be appreciated.

Why, pray tell, do you even need to convert videos? Just throw them on this puppy. That is one of the major selling points of this phone.
You are probably right. You are using Handbrake wrong. It works great. Just look over the web to find some walk throughs. Make sure you use VLC with Handbrake. You can also use DVD Fab decrytor Use it for the trial but You can always rip your dvd's for free.
I am trying to get movies off dvds. I also have some movies I ripped from dvdfab in my computer that are in the weird dvdfab format
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I also had no luck with handbrake so I started using mediacoder. Only thing I really do is scale the movie down to the phone screen size to reduce the file size by a bit. So far it's been really easy to use and all the movies work great.
If I'm going to watch the movie on a bigger screen then I'll copy it over as-is.

I use ripbot264. Works perfect so far and its also easy to use.
I used Handbrake recently to load two movies on my Captivate (Big Lebowski & Trading Places) , I put in the DVD in my iMac and it took about 40 minutes per video to convert the file and then I moved it onto my SD card. I used store purchased DVD's and everything went perfect. Do a Google search for "How to rip DVD on Mac and convert video for Mac using Handbrake"
Does anyone one know how to convert from a movie file already saved, i cant get the sound working properly, picture is magnificent. when i convert the sound is garbled, when i put the source 720p video on it has no sound. anyone else having this problem?
I like divx converter, works well and is free
search youtube for winx dvd ripper platinum & serial
I use EncodeHD and choose the Nexus One profile for the few files which actually need conversion.
http://dcunningham.net/media-tools/encodehd/
For ripping I use DVD decrypter... For encoding DiVX encoder or Media Coder.
Though I have never had to "convert" any video for use on the Captivate. The video's that I have on my server run just as well on my Captivate as they do my 42in LCD.
Just drag and drop and watch.

This. You can slap a 2GB file on your phone and it will play, but that's taking up valuable memory. It would still look just as good if you shrunk it down to a workable 800mb.
I tried using Handbrake and ran into audio issues where the audio was severely slowed down. I switched to DVD Fab and had success. I have used mkv format successfully.
I too use DVDFab - the quickest way is to just tell it covert for iPhone and bam it is done and works every time. There are ways to optimize it, I am still looking for the best settings.
Hi,
I am new to Android and I would like to get some help for a few questions before buying a Gtablet.
1) Flash support - I saw it's posted on the official website it has a temp version of flash player. Can I know if it works well? I need to watch high-def flash movies on different websites. I hope it can play smoothly. Also am I able to play facebook flash games?
2) RMVB/AVI/MKV support - I have tons of these kind of videos on my NAS server but the official site does not say they are supported. I heard there is a Rockplayer that can do it, but I went to their App Store and found no such software. Can i know a way to play these formats? If the hardware does not support them, and there is a software does, how is the quality and speed?
3) Local LAN share - I think I already googled there is one called EStrong, can I open my NAS file share folders, and play Video directly?
4) Customization - Can I install apps from anywhere instead of their app store? for example can i install Android Market? or install an app from a file?
That's pretty much what i concerns so far, other than that this is a great tablet!
I much appreciate your advices.
I can help with the first and fourth ones. This afternoon I watched an episode of outsourced on nbc.com. it wasnt perfect, but definatly viewable, and youtube videos all look fine for me. As for the last one, I have the android market installed, and I have also installed .apks that I have the file form so yea they do work.
re. 2, my son user rockplayer to watch some mkvs last weekend. I'm not that familiar w/anime, but he said it wasn't handling embedded softsubs. We did find another player on market that did but I don't remember the name.
re. 3, ES Explorer will copy files over lan (windows shares or ftp), but it's not for streaming.
Mkv support depends more on how it was encoded. I ripped some DVDs to mkv with 5.1 sound using handbrake and those will play in rockplayer using software decode fine.

I should clarify my earlier post. We were able to watch the MKVs (animes) he had downloaded fine with rockplayer. But they had softsubs, and it wasn't showing those.

Re. 1, my wife uses the Gtab to watch Kdramas, on sites that stream flash, and it works pretty well. Served from sites like tudou, qdisk, etc., and works ok, but a lot of those sites sometimes have heavy traffic, and even with a PC, they get jerky, so it's not the Gtab, but the stream server and traffic usually.

Works on news sites, tv.com, hulu, but thats with vegan 5.1. The stock rom ran flash "ok" but would crash some times.

According to the specs It will play:
32-bit LP-DDR2, DDR2
S1080p H.264/H.263/ VC-1/MPEG-2/4/WMV9/DiVX 4/5 Video Decode
1080p H.264/MPEG-4 Video Encode
Supports multi-standard audio formats, including AAC, AMR, WMA, and MP3
Not all of those are working currently (some are and some aren't). Get yourself a good video encoder/dvd ripper for your computer and once they are encoded, you just drag and drop onto the gtab. If they are encoded properly with the proper settings, you get descent video quality.
4) Customization - Can I install apps from anywhere instead of their app store? for example can i install Android Market? or install an app from a file?

Yes but you will need to do a couple updates using the developer instructions from here and then do a market fix. The easiest one is the simple performance pack update to the 3389 build with a market fix, however over 5,000 people have gone to vegan 5.1
http://vegantab.gojimi.com/
It is the best from what i can tell, wicked fast. It has two issues curently 1) Micro SD card management/file mgt 2) Keyboard auto correct. Updates seem to come out every 10 days to 2 weeks right now.
Thank you all!
Thanks a lot for your answers it helped me a lot!

It looks like the HQ mode in youtube app is actually 480p.
Anybody knows of a way to coerce youtube app to play 720p in HQ mode?
Before trolls start yelling that 720p on 800x480 will not look different than 480p, let me tell you - IT DOES, BIG TIME. Huge difference. Easiest way to watch youtube in 720p right now is to use "jetvd" app, but it's not as well designed as youtube. Hence the question.

''Sorry...currently no option to play HD by default and there never has been. The "playback settings" in your account settings currently only pertain to either 360p or 480p videos.''
There is a whole thread about it here.
Yep, but that thread didn't go anywhere.
I'm just wondering since jetvd is able to pull videos in 720p, perhaps there's a way to hack youtube app to pull in that quality as well.
Although jetvd uses the stock video player app to play them.. maybe youtube app doesn't have capability for anything above 480p..
ohh nice. i never used that app. just played some youtube videos over the mhl adapter.. very nice! i dont see anything wrong with the jetvd myself.
Why can't I see the jetvd pro version? They took it out off the market? ?

Go to www.jetvd.com on your phone. Click the Download button at the bottom of the screen. Then click the red Download button at the bottom of that screen to download JetVD Plus! The dev is giving it away free now, apparently.
Yes is a huge diference between youtube quality and jetdv 720p
Thanks im download from your link

jetVD is awesome, but it's not perfect.
In youtube app you can see your subscriptions, your channel, the design is nicer.. you can watch video and see comments at the same time, plus post them.
JetVD is only for watching in HD really. And search isn't as nice - there are no "related" videos, etc.
In a perfect world, there would be a hack for youtube app to play 720p. That'd be an end-all solution.
works good for now thanks for the tip!!!

well you can use the stock web browser and type about:useragent into the adress bar setting the user agent to desktop and then access the full site. and i just downloaded jet vd and it has related videos. i dont care much for that other stuff though.
I just got my Transformer on Christmas. It was a Black Friday model, and I updated to the latest OTA since, at the last I had read, the root method asked for "the latest firmware." Oops. No root for me. Anyway, I have loaded up multiple episodes of multiple series of 720p subtitled anime MKVs. They all run terribly, stuttering and stumbling along, not keeping up in the least. I've tried using both QQPlayer (my old standby) and every other MKV compatible player on the Market. My old single-core Droid Incredible could handle these will significantly fewer stutters, and my new Rezound dominates them. Heck, even my Android-rigged HP Touchpad didn't blink. So, what's the deal? Is this normal?
EDIT: I've tried this off internal memory and the dock's SD card (class 10). No discernable difference. Tried on a fresh boot too for maximum available memory. Still no difference.

Video playback is disappointing for me too
I tried to view a video in tegra zone and couldn't even play that... Even tegra zone is making this tegra device look bad lol
Then I tried to find a game called Real Racing 2 HD and it's not compatible....
So much for one of the top Android tablets.. .
Give BSPlayer Lite a go. It has hardware decode for TF. It plays 720P mkv on my TF smoothly. It is free too.
Can you try to view the video preview for The Dark Meadow in the tegra zone game section with bsplayer and let us know how you go.
I couldn't watch it and it's an mp4 video

Cannot find the preview video. Only found a few images in there.
Note: I am using the Revolver ROM that has the Tegra Game Zone removed, I went to the Market to re-install it. Don't know if it is the reason for not seeing the video.
Did the game you selected show a black icon?
Would be good if we can find a common 720p video we can all test to confirm if it just doesn't work on any Transformer regardless of ROM, h/w version, viewer, etc.
My TF is rooted and I tried with CPU at normal level then up to 1400 and it was the same

Yeah. Black icon, coming 2012. Is it the one?
If you can upload the video to one of the file sharing service, like rapidshare or fileserve, I can download it and let you know the result.
Alternatively, you can just install BSPlayer and the ARM7 codec and try it yourself. It is free.

Ive possibly posted this a squillion times .. and im suprised it doesnt offer a more obvious fix but as ^^ above says "BSPlayer" is THE ONLY player ive used that will play 99% of movie files without hitch ... Including mkv's
IMO the only player youll need... and it is indeed free .. however i'd recommend a nice donation
Yeah I tried BSPlayer, Mobo, MX & the stock player and none of them would play it.
I'll see if I can take a video with my phone and try downloading the video somehow.
I appreciate the response(s). I'll try BS Player soon. Note that we can again, I'll be rooting, ROMing, and overclocking soon. We'll see how that helps. I just wanna use my tablet mostly for anime, internet, and some gaming. Basically, a bigger screen than my Rezound lol
