[Q] Reverting Back to MR1 - Thunderbolt General

I have a TB I need to return that has the MR2 update on it and I'm not rooted, how do I revert back to the 1st update or can that be done. I do not wont to lose my warranty on my phone.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13150834&postcount=31

How do you have MR2 (not an official SIGNED update) on you non-rooted phone?
If you didn't root and get s-off then the phone shouldn't let you flash any unofficial updates?
Did you just get the OTA update, or has your phone been rooted and s+off'd but you flashed one of the RUU's that's not rooted?
If you never rooted or gained s-off then your phone is still in its original form and you don't need to undo any updates. Only need to return to stock if you're rooted with s-off which it sounds like you did not do?

You can install the MR2 full update without being rooted. I had it on my phone also before i rooted it.

Nope. The original MR2 leak was for unrooted phones and it was signed.
Thanks, Robertus

Leaked MR2 was signed.

I thought it wasn't signed for some reason... My bad...

Do u think Verizon will even notice that it is on there because some of these instructions look way to complicated to get it back to the 1st update. The other phone I had shipped wont be here till July 6th, do anyone think the new update will be out then so I can put it on the old phone then ship it back?

There may be an update on the sixth since that is when the Hotspot promo ends. It usually required a software push to disable it. Don't bet on it though.

Official Captivate Froyo

After rooting and updating to leaked froyo
Will I be able to upgrade to the official update?
Is there a chance I wont be able to?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You can just one click odin back to stock and you will be able to. I believe there is no way you wont be able to unless you brick your phone of course
Not trying to scare u but I don't think u would be able to. I heard once u root and ur files have been messed with, u will no longer be able to ever update. Not even if u flash back to stock. This happened to me with the update they recently released.I researched why my phone didn't update and came across that info. But I could be wrong and why would u want to go to stock?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Above info is incorrect. If your rooted you can still update. If you kernel hoped you need to flash back to stock to do the OTA update. I have tested this.
So its safe just so as long as I flash with Odin and don't brick my phone right
Thanks for helping me out with this

the JH7 update for 2.1 eclair......the ONLY update that has come through OTA from ATT
just a thought, why would you want the official update as it will be made so much better after the guys here fix it. then just odin flash it... just my thoughts
happy captivate user cog 7.0 froyo.....
i need to go up to 9.1 but im happy as it is.
I was wondering the same thing. I have a rooted captivate running froyo and I wanted to install the update that was suppossed to fix gps. I erased the root and flashed back to stock eclair and I still couldnt install the update. I spent hours on the phone with att and samsung and did a bunch of factory resets and still no luck. Samsung said that the only thing left to try would be to send it in to them so they could flash their stock os back on it. But then I would be without a phone for a week and they wont give me a loner. Its really frustrating. The only reason I would go back to stock is if they fix the gps issue. That is the only major complaint that I have with this phone.

nobody knows. stop speculating
For the the last JH7 update, I flashed back to JF6 stock via odin one click, then pulled the OTA update via Kies Mini. Since it worked last time, why won't it work again? Once you flash back with Odin 1 click, Kies Mini sees the phone as fresh out of AT&T store. And the phone in such a condition is most certainly able to be updated straight to Froyo.
I just flashed back to 2.1 through Odin and did the update through Settings/Software Update. No issues.
Alright sounds great
I think I might root and get a new rom today
Any suggestions?
Thanks for the help

I was just reading about att updating issues. Came across something that worked for me. After that gps update I wasn't able to check att for updates anymore. So all I did was go to manage apps, filter to all, go to divice manager, delete data, reboot, and I was able to check for updates again. But fyi, I'm not rooted, so not sure if this will help or not.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You will be able to update, however it will most likely have to be done with Kies.
My phone was rooted and like you all would not allow the OTA update when trying to do so through the phone.
I updated kies itself hooked my phone up and installed the latest update. When doing so though, it removed my root access, reinstalled the bloatware, and undid any changes I did that required rooting (like the circle battery mod).
So updates can be had if you are rooted, it just may always require using the POS program Kies.
noone really knows about ota but probably. kies and odin should still work regardless.
the jf7 ota was not a full rom, it was a small file that contained scripts that replaced modules if i understand it right. froyo probably will need a full install and is more likely to work but is not garenteed by anyone, its all speculation. it is not clear that the last update failing was the intentions of samsung or att, they are not intentionally denying people the update they are just not going to go out of there way to support modded phones when they can save space time and data doing another way. people have reported that kies works and designgears is very fast to release odin versions when new updates are available.
Ahhh the GPS. I was in the car with my family last night and me and my brother have Captivates and I had to ask my mother for her 8GB 3GS so we could GPS our way. So sad. I absolutely love my Captivate to death but it Froyo doesn't fix the GPS I will, 100%, never buy another Samsung phone again. I don't care how awesome they are.
I'm going to wait for the update to be released and for a cooker here to make an awesome rom with the official release.
if you have a rooted and flashed phone why would you want the official update just get it from here, I don't see why this is a cause for concern

It will most likely unroot you, but not remove the ability to regain root. The Nexus does not rely on a security hole to gain root. If they were to lock the bootloader on a Nexus, I'm pretty sure they'd have a riot on their hands.

This is my first time doing an update, so this would be new to me. Forgive me for such a dumb question, but I know root can be regain. What about bootloader, can it still be unlocked? And how about flashing roms, kernels and what not?
That's what I'm worried about. I wanna update but I also wanna know 100% if I can easily root after
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
Well Mikey said rooting will be the same, but I'm just worried about flashing roms and kernels. Would that be any difference? Iduno....
Guys... the Evo can't be rooted because it has a SIGNED boot loader... not only because it is locked. The Nexus comes shipped with a locked boot loader, but you can unlock it easily. This update will be the same. Devs should be able to rip apart the update and make a flashable zip for the radio, which will be the biggest change.
^and i CANNOT wait for that! hopefully, and im sure i wont have to hope too hard, that we can get the other goodies that come with the OTA.
Someone already got the new GRJ90
If I want to get the update, should I wait until a custom ROM based on GRJ90 comes out or unroot my phone and install GRJ22 from Sprint back on my phone?

I myself decided to lock/unroot my phone to its factory state just to be safe. I really want this OTA and I assume that EVERY stock NS4G will get the notification and update with no issue.

I usually just wait for the developers to make a flash zip or incorporate into their rom. It usually doesn't take them very long after the update comes out. They do a pretty amazing job of getting it out to everyone.

I'm pretty sure that you made a mistake unrooting. The chances of you being in the 1st day release batch is very slim. The updated rom will probably be on xda before you actually get it pushed to your phone

You can try, depending on your ROM, but I seriously doubt anything you want to happen will come out of that. You might be stuck in a boot loop, it could brick it, it could just screw up all kinds of stuff. VERY bad idea in general. My advice:
Be patient.
im still running HTC Mecha.. I just used Revolutionary to root.. and still have everything running good on my stock ROM.

Mecha is the HTC codename for the device, much like the EVO 4G is known as the Supersonic and the Incredible S/Incredible2 as the Vivo/Vivow, respectively.
just be patient. Usually a workable, root version will be released shortly before or after the OTA goes live. I would not except an OTA on a rooted phone. just keep an eye out on XDA.
Since you're rooted and stock the best thing to do is to wait until they release a version of it so you can install it via recovery like already mentioned. If you accept an OTA update while rooted bad things will most likely occur.
You will not he able to install an ota if your rooted. This is due to the custom recovery. When the update checks the recovery, it will fail.

[Q] is the current bootloader unlock forever?

hey all.
i planned on getting my GS3 a week or so ago buy a family member on my family plan decided to take the upgrade without letting me know and now im stuck waiting for the next upgrade (comes in november)
i wanted to know if the current unlock bootloader method is permanent? as in cant be patch by future OTA updates?
i should have my GS3 by the end of this month (no later than the first few days of november) but i dont want to end up getting the phone then come to find that they released a OTA update (maybe official JB) and it patches the unlock method.
please bare with me as i have very little knowledge on how some things work with phones. im trying to learn. i have pc hardware pretty much down though (LOL)
i know that root methods can change easily with updates to the phone but not sure about unlocked bootloaders
thanks guys for reading and hopefully helping me out.
It could be patched, yes. However, if you unlock and install a custom recovery and never take an OTA, you will be fine. All you would have to do is be patient enough to wait for a Dev to release a safe version for you to flash.

Once I get my phone first thing will be to root and unlock bootlader. I don't plan locking the boot loader (unless I had to issue with the phone and needed a replacment)
I'm just worried that when I can use my early upgrade and buy the phone it would be to late and a ota would be on the phone already that would cause it to not be able to unlock.
I should be fine (plan on getting phone on October 29th) but I don't want to be stick with a phone I can't install ROMs to. (Hate touchwiz) want aosp.

Nope, it could be patched in an update.

You'll be fine. We have access to an unsecured bootloader so they can't patch that. The problem could be obtaining root. The current root method exploit could get patched and then another method needs to be found.
Sent from Galaxy SIII
I'm sure even if they did patch it, we can Odin back to original factory firmware and unlock again.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
You should be fine. Even if there is a OTA it most likely wont come installed out of the box.
Even if they put out an ota you can just use Odin and put older firmware onto the phone.
nothing lasts forever...
It will be patched but then unlocked again by the great dev here at xda

They didnt unlock it the first time. It was a leaked bootloader that got it unlocked.

[Q] Auto-Update: Can it be disabled?

The root for 2.20 was just released, but I won't be able to do it for a few days and I'm worried an AT&T update might fix it. Right after I got my HOX, the 2.2 update showed up and I was hesitant to accept it because I heard that the new update would stop rooting. I declined, but next time it came up it didnt ask me if I wanted to update. Is there a way to make sure this doesnt happen again?
Thanks in advance.

Everything it starts to automatically download the update factory reset and delete the part it had downloaded off your phone
There is an apk called updater or something like that. Just uninstall or freeze it, and you will never get the OTA update notifications again. This has been discussed before in multiple other threads, so do a search for the full details.
Grab Voodoo OTA rootkeeper from the play store and back up your root just in case if you are running the stock Rom. The JB update has broken root on many devices and will be coming soon for ATT One X. Voodoo has been able to restore it after JB.

Guys, he's not rooted, so Voodoo isn't going to work.
To the OP, I would not worry about a few days. AT&T and HTC do not move that fast (oh if they could--we'd have JB by now!).
