[Q] Confused about Froyo vs Gingerbread - G Tablet General

I have a 1.2 branch G-Tab with Andriod 2.2 (Froyo) running Brilliant Corners but I have noticed that a lot of people seem to be running CM7 (CyanogenMod 7?). I was under the impression that CyanogenMod requires Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), doesn't it? How did everyone get Gingerbread on their G-Tabs? Does it update when you load the CM7 ROM or other Ginger edition ROM?

CM7 is Android 2.3. So when you load it onto your Gtab you will actually be running gingerbread instead of froyo. Since you are running 1.2 based brilliant corners (which is a rom i would really recommend) you would have to switch bootloaders to a 1.1 version to be able to load Cyanogen Mod. It really comes down to what rom you like the best. If you are more of a "noob" who wants all the features possible, I would stick to a Froyo based rom, because video acceleration as well as everything else is possible. Basically the further you step away from android 2.2 the more things start breaking.
2.3 --> video acceleration (main)
3.0 --> camera, flash, video (main)
I hope this helps.

Cyanogenmod 7.1 on bootloader 1.2 is also available on Slatedroid an perhaps more. I have tried it. Nice, but as said, Froyo-based ROMs are the only ones that work 100%. On Cyanogenmod 7.0, gyro messed up Army. Iper, on 7.1 no sound at all.

I was totally gonna add that section but for some reason forgot I have personally tried them and they work well. I just said 1.1 because that is what it was initially developed on. Something tells me that sooner than later the Cyanogen Mod team will make the bootloader switch when they really start seeing their work ported to 1.2

Given up

Has anyone else here just given up on 2.2 being released, and instead are more excited about custom 2.3?

Nope, 2.2 overcomes a bigger barrier than 2.3. With 2.1 I'll finally be able to use the new GMail app, the new voice search app, etc. 2.3 is nice & interesting, but there really aren't any killer features to me besides the new look. And even that is achievable using a theme. Plus a released 2.2 will be more stable than a ported 2.3.
Note: The only reason I am on 2.1 still is I am waiting for a stable 2.2 captivate release to use as a basis for my next custom ROM.

you should try the axura rom. most stable rom to date! AND its 2.2..... AND GPS works great for most people using the rom. AND it has awesome support! AND....
The main reason i'm waiting for the official release is i don't want to wipe my phone/
I haven't given up because I've been using a fully functional Captivate-build of Froyo thanks to Cognition. Yes, it's not the 100% official 100% final version, but ya know what? It runs really damn good and I have yet to find anything missing/buggy due to the Froyo leak itself.
Don't want to wipe your phone? There are so many apps out there that make backing up and restoring a breeze. TitaniumBackup and ROM Manager to name two. I can flash a new version of Cognition AND have all my apps back up and running with their saved data in 20 minutes or less.

Not interested in no voicemail, the look of Axura, or using a kernel not built from Captivate source. Plus I'm tired of flashing ROMs lol
I'm sure Axura is a fine ROM for those who made that jump. I just like making my own ROMs from other people's Captivate parts.
I'm more tired of seeing yet another thread about the unreleased official Froyo 2.2.
I deem this thread close
We will see when they release an official version of 2.2 and there will be threads all over the place when it happens.

[DEV] GreenBreadMod - green lensed cameras mod for official GB!

THE DEVICE HAS BEEN MODIFIED SO THAT IT CAN NOW SHOOT BOTH RED(NEW) AND GREEN(OLD) CAMERAS.
I've been unable to make green lense kernel modules work well with new kernel. GB kernel is dicks!
So i performed a fusion of 2.3 firmware onto 2.2 kernel via 2nd-init.
Pros:
Stable kernel
No ultra-bright buttons
Cons:
Somewhat slower than official 2.3
Live Wallpapers don't work
Contents:
2.2 (3.4.2-177) kernel
4.5.134 ramdisk
EGL drivers from Froyo
Camera libraries from Froyo
Sensors library from CM7
libsurfaceflinger/libserver_init from Droid2 GB OTA
libcamera wrapper by me, based on CM7 wrapper by maniac103
BlurCamera ported from Froyo (GB one is not stable)
Installation:
Install official GingerBread via nandroid + fixed sbf
Install 2nd-init recovery 0.6.1 or later
Install zip from recovery
Download:
http://tihiy.net/files/greenlens/GreenBread_1.1_release.zip
Make mirrors.
Disclaimer:
This is tested on latest (134) leak but may work on older or newer releases. I'm interested in results on those.
This is beta mod of beta firmware with frankenstein-esque methods
This may or may not work on red lenses
I'm not responsible for your damages
Please don't spam this thread with bugs, don't start flamewars and don't whine
Thanks to everyone in CyanogenDefy team!
Mention me if you're using my work.
GOOD。
but i used CM7 now.
I guess this will cause usb and wifi tether to not work?
This is great. i have red lense but this makes gingerbread development able for everyone.
This is just a great work for green lensed phones....

Usb thether seems not working (was it ever working? dunno), 3g-wifi tether works.
great job,
i tried to mix old kernel with new ramdisk&/system - apparently failed.
Amazing, I will wait some day and I'll try for sure
Anyone already running it? If so how is it.

im trying it rite now, will post feedback asap.
good job!
my defy with green lense works fine!
thx
I'm really happy this has finally been done. I've sold my Defy few days ago and I regret that I could give the official 2.3 ROM a try. Good work !
works like a charm in my green lens defy. by the way, its the first time im running official 2.3.4, 4.5.1-134. i found it a bit laggy in comparison with nordic froyo and miui. maybe i need some reboots. im runinng shadow´s rooted version by walter (nandroid + fixed sbf).
EDIT: in the OP theres an advice that says live wallpapers dont work, im at wpclock 1.5.3 working as well.
yes dont work live wallpaper!

Help?
I have a stock gingerbread unrooted and I wanna try this. I've been searching, and it seems that the only way to get the phone rooted is having froyo first and flashing a nandroid. I am really lazy to go back to froyo. Is there any way to root GingerBlur?
I dont understand its for kernel 2.2.2 but we want for Gingervread kernel
But thanks
Is there any problem except live wallpapers. How is performance?I shld install and try this.
Is it support touch focus???

How many times does it needs to repeated there is no such thing as gingerbread kernel. Kernel is one thing android version is another! Gingerbread can work with 29 32 35 kernels. Moto uses 32 to GB and froyo too.

[Q] What ROM to choose?

So i've been looking at all the XT720 ROMs that are available now, and it's got me wondering which rom is the best? They all seem to be very similar.

It depends on what you are looking for, ill break it down for you.
Everything started with dexters froyo 1.3. Excellent breakthrough for all XT720 users so most of us started out with this ROM. Over time the excellent devs like khal powers, fjfalcon and Mioz7ae, worked on the same dexters froyo to create basically 3 ROMS.
1) Khalpowers Epic Steel V4, heavily optimized, fast stable, swap support and non stock appearance.
2) Fjfalcon, took the stock dexters and created RusMod 1.19 which is dexters with stock appearance and all the optimizations. He recently changed the kernel to the one from CB's Froyo, and also added build prop changes from there. It has multilanuguage support. He also created the SWAP kernel which can be applied to all the said ROMS, but needs a fastboot via USB everytime your phone reboots.
3) Khalpowers, ported MIUI which is a whole new experience. Depends on how much you like MIUI. Like epicsteel its very fast and stable.
4) Cincinnati Bell Froyo, built by CB using the same process as dexter. Much more stable than dexters.
5) WanHU's rom based on the original korean 2.2 is what most people are looking into right now. Stock 2.1 appearance. Very fast, media buttons working, radio working, TV out working, and with haptic feedback. This is the closest well get to an offical MOTO release.
If you want to go with a stock froyo appearance I suggest try either CB, or RUS mod. If you want different appearance try MIUI, or epicsteel. If you want the latest and most promising ROM which is just a treat to use go for WanHU. Personally id tell you flash WanHU, been using it nowadays and I have to say its pretty cool.

[Q] CM7 and Flash Player

I have a two part question. I am currently running CM6 with Android 2.2. I am using Android 2.2 on my Milestone xt720 due to the Flash Player.
I have seen there are some CM7 builds out there. My camera is not working too well with cm6. I am looking to upgrade to CM7 but I am also seeing a lot that say to go back to Android 2.1. Will I lose the Flash Player and which CM7 build is most stable?

[Q] To root or not to root...

Hi,
I have a Triumph and I'm considering rooting it, but I was wondering if doing so would disable any of the stock functions like the camera or the HDMI output.
I'm also wondering what the best firmware is for it. I know most are partial to Cyanogen Mod. Are there others that are better?
Thanks,
Lanie

Well there's Rooting and Flashing
If you root it then everything will still work fine
If you flash a Custom Rom then it's unlocked or Pre-Rooted, but there are things about each
1. Froyo Roms: Custom Froyo Roms should have all things working as stock but they'll probly function better, there are some froyo Ported roms however that have things not working so read the first posts carefully
2. Gingerbread Rom or CyanogeMod 7 or CM7: CM7 Roms have everything working just like stock except the mini hdmi, mini hdmi wont work at all anymore, but there an upgraded android os gingerbread, adds many things like tethering, overclocking and many custom settings
3. Ice Cream Sandwich or CyanogenMod 9 or CM9: CM9 has no camera and no mini hdmi but its two android os's above froyo, also adds tethering overclocking and custom settings
4. Jelly Bean or CyanogenMod 10 or CM10: Still Highly Alpha or Still Highly in Test Phase, No Camera, No Mini Hdmi, Many other things dont work but if you were feeling sporty you could atleast see Jelly Bean on your Triumph lol
No it won't disable any stock functions but it would open your phone up to more options and possibilities then before. I would root the phone and flash 2.3 (gingerbread) on it, froyo is pretty out dated but 2.3 is a really good ROM, a lot of development went into it, especially cm7

Nothing wrong with the stock rom either, once you root and clean house.
