[Q] How to get better battery life? - T-Mobile LG G2x

Okay, i must admit that the battery life on the G2X is bad. Im running CM RC 7.1
I have 2G speed because $50 prepaid plan for T-Mobile only gives 2G speed which is okay for unlimited data, talk, and text but the battery life is killing me.
Any way to make it better? Tips or anything?

Best solution
Use Juicedefender! The plus version is fine. Turn off GPS/4g/bluetooth as often as you can and charge when you can.

For those who want to switch to TB

Think again! I own TB since March and the battery is the worst thing i eva seen. Pls spare me all the tips abt charging the phone, i have tried themall. If i turn on lte, the phone will not last me more than 5 hours and it was not even heavy use. Please keep this in mind if u want to switch.
My gf has a charge I have a thunderbolt. Running a good Rom and kernel pretty much takes care if battery issues for me. I get about 2 hours more than hers with about the same usage. If you compare both using stock roms than yes the charge will last longer though.

Is she rooted and running a custom ROM as well, or are you comparing custom ROM to stock?
I'm giving up with running custom ROMs. Been there, done that. I just need a phone that works. Wait...there isn't one but really I just need a decent phone. I feel like I'm going down that road again using Android...ya know that Linux tinkering when Slackware was installing from floppies and the ego "I could do whatever I want" with it. Maybe I need to switch to the dark side for a break
If I switch to 3G on TB, I will have about 30% left by the end of the day. If I give the phone to my son so he could play a litto game or watch litto utube, I better have somewhere to charge the phone right away. It also depends on where you're at as far as LTE coverage goes. I think I have decent coverage (12mb/s dl; 2-3mb/s upload)
I'm confident that Samsung will release new firmware to address some of the issues. Don't think switching to a different phone, you won't have issue(s). For TB, I will seriously think twice as the known battery issue.

OP sounds like he needs to buy an iphone or a crackberry. Great battery life, no tinkering required.
I currently have active TB, Charge, Nexus S, iPhone 4.
Battery life - iP4 the best, then NS, then a total tossup on the TB/Charge.
Form Factor - NS the best, TB, Charge, iP4.
Screen/Display - Charge best, iP4, NS, TB horrible.
Call quality/coverage - VZW is great at both, AT&T is decent coverage, but call quality not top notch, T-Mobile terrible coverage, decent call quality.
The TB has a wonderful advantage, for my usage habits, over all the other VZW offerings in that it has the simultaneous voice/data over 3G. No other phone on VZW can do that yet.
A friend saw I had both phones on my desk yesterday; she asked about both since she wants a new one. She assumed the Charge was my favorite for some reason, but when she flat out asked I told her all things considered, the TB had a slight edge over the Charge.
I'd recommend either phone, but I'd also say they both must be rooted and tweaked to be of much use. The TB battery is much better on BAMF, but it still sucks, than stock, and the Charge is a laggy piece of cow dung if you leave it stock RFS file system.
I had the thunderbolt since launch day - and the one really, and only "killer" is svdo over 3g. Battery life killed me, as did the shoddy build quality (3 cln replacements in 3 weeks). The screen also was far far far too washed out in direct sunlight (didnt really noticed until summer, dang those grey New England days!). I ended up having VzW executive customer service swap my Bot for a new Charge - whilst my Thunderbolt would burn 15% mostly standby to 20% using the device on LTE or about 8-10% over 3g. I'm still a slave to wifi at home with the Charge, but at least the screen is usable outdoors and I can make it approximately 10 hours on 4g/18 forced to 3g/24+ on wifi. The LTE radio in all of these phones are the killers.
With that said, LTE speed overall really isnt needed, at least until video chat (or 2.3.4) is available and stable. I do really miss svdo over 3g from the bolt, thankfully Boston metro is blanketed in 4g, but I'm finding the Charge quite possibly the best overall 4G device on VzW especially after the debloat and voodoo mods.
OOB though with no modifications? Thunderbolt. If you can deal with the absolutely terrible battery life (on 4g) and are never out in the sun and need to see your display.
But the Charge's screen is superb, the phone is more comfortable to hold for an extended period of time, and battery life is head and shoulders better. I'm just scared that 2.3.4 will not make it on time, due to Samsung's terrible track record with updates and Skype with video will stall for Android on a whole.
Edit - I also absolutely hate TouchWiz. LauncherPro saved the day in that regard as well.
I had 1% battery drain overnight while the phone idled for 6 hours. I turned mobile data off at the time. 1%.
Right now the battery is at 75% and has been off of the charger for 12 hours and 17 minutes. The phone has been on constant 4G from ~6:45am until now, 12:41pm.
I love my battery life

Who said they weren't?
I just switched from a stock rooted TB to a Charge. My thoughts:
-Like everyone else, TB battery life was dismal in 4G areas. Even with the extended battery it was very poor.
-Screen on TB is *very* hard to see outside.
-TB pretty freaking heavy.
-HTC's Sense UI is a lot prettier than Samsung's UI.

How are you getting this kind of battery life. I'm running Gummycharged 1.7.5 with the PBJ OTC kernal (not overclocked though), and I lose 20% over eight hours while I'm sleeping.

As I said in the kernel thread, if you are going to stick with stock clock speeds, you will get better battery life on the non-OC version of my kernel.
I'm normally in a decent to strong 4G area, and I really don't see a huge difference in battery life between the TB and DC, but this week I've been working in a location that's 3G only, and in a building where the coverage is weak for data.
In this circumstance, the battery life between my Droid and my Thunderbolt is very dramatic. Whether it's just physically a better radio, or a better software for it, the Charge's battery life is amazing compared to the Thunderbolt's. This morning, after not even three hours, my Charge still had 90% battery life, my Thunderbolt was down to 48%. Neither phone had been used for anything; they were both just idle on my desk. Amazing.
The Charge clearly handles weak signals better than the TB in this area (Santa Clarita, CA - near Magic Mountain just north of Los Angeles).

Q:does Wifi use more battery than Huspa+??

i haven't been using wifi since i got the one x cause it seems to drain my battery faster then when I'm just connected to cellular data .. what do you guys think .. i've only had the onex 11 days and i already used 2 gigs data with normal usage .. I'm afraid ill be throttled soon when i hit 3 gigs .. i know on my iPhone the wifi used less battery than cellular data
I'd say WiFi probably uses more, but it's hard to tell. It could just be that my phone is having trouble locking into my routers signal.. it goes from full bars to 1 every 5 seconds.

I'm really hoping the ota update will make wifi use less battery than cellular data, does anyone know if past HTC devices r the same when it comes to wifi vs cellular data for battery life? Thanks
Wifi uses less in my experiences. Most of my day is spent in a building where signal is weak which drains my battery. I find if I use Wifi battery life is significantly better.

wifi uses less for me as well
When I'm on wifi all day I can get almost 5 hours screen time browsing. When I'm on HSPA I get about 3 to 3.5 hours. 25% Brightness.

grandfathered Unlimited plans switched over to LTE Unlmtd. have a cap for throtlling of 5GB. 3GB cap is for 3G plans.
thats great to hear that people have been having better screen time with wifi ... i haven't really given wifi the chance to prove to me it can be better ... ill have to experiment .. now if only i had lte!! i wanna feel the sPEEd!! i can't believe i still don't have lte and i live in s.florida!!
Wifi definitely uses less battery than cellular data...not even close.

I just had the coolest thing happen, I woke up and turned my phone on only to find I have lte at my house now! Has this happened to anyone else in the Atlanta area?

Be prepared to get worse battery life than before. LTE really chews battery life alive. I turn off mobile data when I'm not using it just to get better battery though.
im on LTE and get 24 hours easy...and id consider myself at least a moderate user.
I havent noticed bad battery life when I was using it before but its never been constant so I guess Ill find out soon haha
Ottawa - Canada
Where LTE covered pretty much everywhere. I've used LTE on my device and I get at the most 6hours of usage.
I consider myself very heavy user. Download, online music, browsing, IM+ etc... Switching LTE off and going only on 4G I get an extra 12hours worth of juice but the speed is more then what I need 4G speed here is an average of 8mpbs UP and DOWN. That translate to 800K per second in transfer rate. Just as fast as you regular high speed at home. So no there's no need for LTE personally. It just kills your battery off in no time.
I've consistently gotten over 24 hours with light usage on LTE. Obviously reception and level of usage will make a big difference. But for many people the battery life on LTE is plenty good enough to use all day, then charge when you sleep.
LTE destroys battery, but that's what 3g is for

I haven't noticed a significant drain on the battery going from HSPA+ to LTE.
I don't use wifi because of the bugs so i'm always using data.
I easily get 18+ hrs with heavy usage, including 3+ hrs screen time on LTE, so not real sure what you are expecting from the battery. It's a high-end Smartphone, use it for what its meant to be used for.
Based on some of the responses, the logic is like buying a Ferrari and only driving it 55 in the slow lane cuz you're worried about not getting good gas mileage.... Com'on people, use the damn phone!

Yes, I never got a LTE signal at my house which is roughly 50 miles from Atlanta, but recently I've started getting a very good LTE signal at home.
I also don't see any of these battery drain issues everyone talks about. I'm on LTE for about 16 hours a day before I plug my phone in at night, and I always have some juice left. This has changed to be even better recently since I tend to need wifi more using AOKP and it's inconsistent mobile data. But my good battery life was consistent with stock and other Sense ROMs using only LTE.

Lmfao, me too. I'm in hiram. I now have lte all the way from Atlanta to Paulding county. In fact, I have had constant lte since. I was sitting at the bowling alley, which I use to struggle just to get any signal, and I had two bars, lte.
Really haven't noticed much of a difference in battery drain either. Now I do use wifi at the house but still, been pretty impressed actually.

When you get throttled what are typical speeds?? Out of nowhere my speeds went from 16-24mb down and 7-11mb up to about 3-6mb down and 1-2mb up. Checked my usage (unlimited) and i've only used 200+mb so far. Whats up with that?
I suspect that the people complaining about LTE battery drain also have their brightness turned way up, like at full. I know, b/c I'm one of those people. Almost any phone is going to last you an entire day, of even heavy use, if the brightness is down to 10%. Even in the laptop world, the battery life differential going from 10% brightness to 100% screen brightness is double, real world use.

LTE battery life?

Hey guys just wanted to know how does different network/radio affect the battery life? I am on rogers.. if I am on LTE I usually only get about 10hour or less on 3G I can go for more then 2 days...
There is no easy answer to this question. Battery life is often a function of network reception, which varies drastically by location. If you are seeing such a huge difference from being on LTE, its possible you are in a fringe LTE reception zone and the phone is constantly scanning and trying to connect to LTE and draining the battery. Flashing a different radio may help, but its not necessarily a silver bullet.
Battery life always varies quite a bit from person to person, even regardless of LTE. LTE adds another level of complication. I'm on LTE all day, and I can easily get 24 hours or more before needing to charge. I think some on here have mentioned getting 2 days on LTE.
I'm on LTE 24/7 and my phone makes it through days no prob. I do charge each night while sleeping, but that's to be expected IMo.

[Q] AT&T and T-Mobile battery life differences?

I've been using both AT&T and T-Mobile (StraightTalk and T-Mobile) contract free for several months now and regardless of what my signal is on the two, I always seem to get worse battery life with StraightTalk/AT&T. Has anyone else played around with using both in the same places for an extended period of time and had the same results?
I'm trying to decide which I'm going to go with and so far even though I get LTE service in less areas with T-Mobile, I'm almost tempted to stick with them just because 1) when I do have LTE service, it's a ton faster then AT&T and 2) I get much less battery drain on T-Mobile then I do with AT&T.
Even in places where I had worse reception with T-Mobile (which less face it, is very often), I still get less battery drain then when I switch to AT&T and have a much better signal. Not sure if I'm hallucinating or if anyone else has experienced the same.
For example, at the hotel I'm currently at, while on T-Mobile my signal isn't quite as good as it is with AT&T but it takes several HOURS before my battery % drops below 90%. On AT&T I have a much better signal but yet I'll be within the low 80s after 3 or so hours.
Has anyone else tried this and if so have you noticed the same thing?
battery life is dependent on how you personally use the phone, how you set it up, and, most importantly, the quality of your phone/data connection. the quality of your phone/data connection could make or brake your battery life, by 1 or 2 screen on hours. thats a huge difference.

Oh I realize all of that. When home and not on travel I pretty much utilize my phone at two locations. Home and Work. In both locations I used each network for about 2 weeks checking cell signals etc and using the phone the same way the entire time. During this time I've noticed one constant, my phone with AT&T always drains the battery much faster. To be honest I thought I was crazy but I double checked and ran for another couple of weeks..this time basically logging battery life with usage and connection quality. AT&T on average had a better signal but also drained the battery faster...usage was about the same through the test. So I did the same thing while basically sitting in a hotel for a few days and just letting the phone sit as I was mainly using a separate phone on Sprint. Same thing..the time I had the phone sitting there with AT&T it had almost a perfect signal but the phone drained quite a bit faster then T-Mobile with practically no utilization. Obviously I rebooted prior to each.
I realize this doesn't make any sense at all but it's something I'm noticing.
I just found your post, and I'm experiencing the exact same issue. To quote a post I just made on reddit:
I've been a T-mobile prepaid customer (the $30 5gb plan) since I've had the N5, and recently I decided to switch to Straight Talk for the better coverage (I got the AT&T compatible SIM). I've been using the Straight Talk SIM for the past week, and I've notice two very odd things:
1. Battery life is significantly worse on Straight Talk. Unfortunately I don't have any before and after screen shots, but to provide context, a typical day of usage on T-mobile would leave me with ~50% battery life at the end of the day. Now, with Straight Talk and that same usage, I'm down to 10-20%.
2. With Straight Talk, I consistently have 4-5 bars of LTE, but oftentimes when I try and load a web page, there can be about a 5 second delay before the page starts loading. Even when running the Speed Test app, when it's testing the download speed, it will sometimes completely stop mid-download for a few seconds.
Have you found any solution to the battery issue you cited in your post?

again, it still fits right in, its the data/phone signal quality that decides the battery life, as i wrote earlier. lowered quality = lowered battery life, period.
