How's the battery life?

If you have gotten your hands on a TB, what kind of battery life are you seeing under various scenarios (3G, Wifi, 4G, etc)? This is the biggest hesitation that I and other folks are having...

Battery life is not that great, but much better than it was 4 months ago. With early firmwares it lasted about 4 hours without even using it. Now it is good for 8 hours of moderate use in 4G coverage. The phone does eat more battery while in 4G coverage than in 3G due to the higher uplink power used by LTE over EVDO. I think future firmwares will help, but the MSM9600 chipset was designed for datacards and not phones like the MSM8960.

That is such a stupid reason for poor battery life. It was also a problem when 3g stuff was new. The solution seems quite simple to me, automatically turn off the 4g radio when the phone is in sleep mode. There is no reason to have it using a higher data transfer rate when sleeping. The solution could be extrapolated further into an app based solution. Turn on the 4g radio only when certain apps are open and running. Who really needs 14Mb connection to read e-mail? To make everyone happy, allow the users to configure which apps turn on the 4g radio as well as allowing them to leave it on all the time or leave it off all the time. Viola, battery problem solved.

Hmm, that's pretty weak. What about 3G?

I have gotten into the habit of turning of 3g on my incredible while I'm at work anyway .. I dont need to be that connected while I"m busy working anyway... and pressing the little widget takes 2 seconds to get back online... that will help you increase your battery by 3 times

Battery life is terrible for me, I an on 3g, charged the phone to 100 when I got it and now after 1 hour of use its down to 60%. This is the first charge so its all up in the air, but def way worse than I am used to.

Not bad for me (Central Dallas area), but it is switching between 4G and 3G a noticeable bit, so I'm sure it could be better. I'm not too worried about it as my extended battery comes in tomorrow.

I don't care about the battery issues ,I just love this phone for what it is. Is there even a 4.3in phone out there that last 24hrs of heavy to moderate use, no there isn't. If u want 48hr heavy usage get a blackberry.

In theory, LTE should use less power than CDMA as it's on the 850 Mhz spectrum so the TX power needed should be a lot less.
While in LTE mode the CDMA will kick down to 1x and so should also use less power.

I don't care about the battery issues ,I just love this phone for what it is. Is there even a 4.3in phone out there that last 24hrs of heavy to moderate use, no there isn't. If u want 48hr heavy usage get a blackberry.

I came from a long line of HTC phones and I wold say that the battery life is better if not on par with the Incredible I had before this.
I bought the phone @ 9am and the battery was at 39%. I almost positive I did not put the phone to sleep until after 1pm. The phone was still at 33%
I am on the fringe of 4G, so it was switching between 3G and 4G, lots of downloads, about 6 calls, lots of texts, surfing/email and only a 6% loss. I'm happy with that.
Tomorrow will be the real test as I have not completed a full charge yet. I did notice that when I did connect it to the charger a little while ago, it charges much slower than my Incredible did.

Battery life is great so far. Better than my Droid X, Samsung fascinate, EVO

Unplugged at 3:30pm after fully charged. It's now 7:50pm and it's giving a warning to connect charger (at ~10%). I hope battery life improves after a few full discharge/recharge cycles otherwise may have to look into other options such as extended battery. I guess that's the price to pay to have screaming LTE on all the time. I'm guessing Verizon intentionally left out a way to disable LTE to keep data usage off the 3G network.

This is because the USB Port only pulls .5 amperes, and the T-Bolt's charger is rated at 1.0 amperes. This is why the charger charges much quicker than USB. Also, my motorola droid charger was .5 amperes too. So this kinda sucks. Power is definitely going to be an issue for the t-bolt.

I came from the fascinate which had a terrible battery but this is much worse. I don't mind though, I have a charger in my car and at my desk. I am very happy with this purchase so far.

Yeah... I actually bought a car charger for the first time since phones used proprietary connections (read lg chocolate). Good investment

It's ok, fully charged at 5, its 11 and down to 25%, need to cycle through a few times.

^This... seriously people... the power manager needs several COMPLETE charges to calibrate... also because it is new most people are using it far more than they will after the calibration is completed (remember display is than #1 battery drain and the hours you spend configuring and playing with it the first day or two gives an inaccurate assessment of 'normal' use)...

Is it just me or is the Thunderbolt battery life... kinda good?

So, I was well informed from many different sources that the biggest drawback to the Thunderbolt was the horrendous battery life (people complaining in the 4 hour range). I came from a Samsung Fascinate, which would most of the time get me through the day, but just barely, and the Battery Use was almost always 70-80% screen (even at the lowest brightness). I primarily got the Thunderbolt for the possibility of 4G tethering, so the first thing I did was buy an external battery charger pack (extended battery was sold out).
Well, I've had it for a few days now and despite geeking out on the phone, tethering whenever I can, using it probably more than my Fascinate, I haven't had any issues with battery. I pulled it off charge about 8am this morning, it's currently 9:45pm, I've been using it pretty heavily all day, tethering on the train to work, using it at work, and using it the whole train ride home, and it's currently at 33% battery. 6:18:00 Awake time. Where is this horrendous battery life I heard about?
I'm not using any battery saving utilities (Juice defender etc), have it set to Auto Brightness, just letting it be on WiFi when WiFi is available. I'm using the bone stock HTC Android 2.2 that came with it, not root etc.
So far this phone has much better battery life than my Fascinate and I'm pretty impressed, especially since I believe it has a slightly smaller battery. If I check battery use today, it's 59% Display, with the next highest being 9% Cell Standby.
I haven't used it as a 4G hotspot for more than maybe 30 minutes at a time, but even then it doesn't seem to die too quickly. Am I just missing something that other people are doing that drains their batteries like crazy or is it just that I'm careful about not using stuff the indiscriminately uses 4G for no reason? (I removed all the auto updating widgets like the Friend Feed etc).
Anyone else had a similar experience?

JK... the battery is ok for me I haven't had it die on me yet but when ever I drive it goes in the charger so I'm sure that adds up.

Seriously though. Go to any one of the Thunderbolt forums or read any Thunderbolt review and you'll see the battery being discussed prominently. There is definitely an issue with it. Who knows what it is though..
The thing that really bothers me is the battery isnt consistently bad. Like the last two days Ive gotten 24 hours of use out of my phone. Normally that's unheard of.. but next week something will happen and it will be back to being dead within 6-8 hours with barely any use.

You are correct that this issue is oft-cited in regards to the TB. However, I think the 4 hour data points may be slightly exaggerated. I wound up buying the oem extended battery because I wasn't make it past 6.5 hours with regular use. I travel pretty far to get to work every day, switching between many towers over the course of my commute, constantly going from 4g to 3g to 1x and back. Besides the screen (which will be the biggest battery drain on any phone with a modern touchscreen) data should be your next highest drain, and the biggest variable you are capable of tweaking to change your battery performance. My 6.5 hour experience was with a pretty abusive data usage scenario, and I don't see many people inflicting much more upon the battery in actual, real-world use. That said, with the extended battery, the TB has the best battery life of any phone I have owned in the last five years, and I couldn't be happier.

I'm getting about 12 hours with pretty heavy use. Running BAMF 1.6.2 with kernel overclocked. I'm pretty happy with battery life...it's just as good as it was on my droid incredible.

I have learned thru experience that all HTC phones with 4.3 inches screens are bad at battery life. When I say bad, that's comparing it to a smaller less powerful device. But take in account all it does and to me battery is ok. I mean the HD2, and EVO when I owned them were battery hogs. But I always had a charge. Ppl want bigger and faster phones,Well there's a trade off until battery technology catches up, the bigger phones will consume more battery. Its like saying I want a better car more sporty and trendy but I don't want to pay that much. Not goin to happen.

With just 3G available to me and using everything stock...I get slightly better battery life than I did with my incredible that was on CM7. Compared to a stock incredible, much better. I'm a bit scared for when I do get 4G seeing all the posts though =)

Rooting gave me an extra 2% per hour usage. I can go 15 hours and still have 40% left on my battery. I'm happy with this battery.

Thunderbolt has better battery life than my Samsung Epic had. Stock, my battery wasnt all that great. However, changing some settings and finding a suitable kernel has helped with my battery life.

I have had the same experience. Coming from a Fascinate, the Thunderbolt is so much better on battery life. Mind you, I do not live in an LTE area. This is what I do:
- Juice Defender (Balanced settings)
- Brightness - half way
- GPS only on when I need it
- Wifi on almost 100% of the time (at home and work I use only wifi)
- Non-Rooted
I even have 100+ apps installed including leaving Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger on almost 24/7. I have about 8 or 9 widgets as well. Most that pull info.

If you're in strong signal expect much better battery life but because 4g is so new I expect a lot of people to be in areas with low 4g signal as Verizon has not even turned up 85-90% of the towers past 45% power.

I've had the TB for 3 days now and am coming from a rooted Eris (running xtr rom). I have noticed that with the same amount of usage I am also getting better battery life on the stock TB than I did on my Eris. I am in an area that does not have 4G so I have that turned off.

where did you get this info about the power of the towers? btw what power do they normally work at? 100W?

I'd love to see some sources backing this info up.
When I bought my TB I left the store with the extended battery in. The battery easily lasts me all day. After reading all the complaints about how bad the stock battery is I decided to try using it and I'm actually surprised by how long it lasts. I was expecting much worse. It's easily lasted me 8-12 hours with my normal everyday use. I'm going to stick to the stock battery from now on. I was getting annoyed by the heft and bulkiness of the extended battery. My phone feels so sleek with the stock one.

Yeah, I'm with the "it's just you" crowd.
Pretty bad battery life for me here in NYC (plenty of good 4G around).
Not a heavy data user (less than 20min browsing per day).
Not a lot of long calls.
Accounts update once every hour (FB, 2 email accounts).
Brightness at min.
No video playing, no music playing.
No speakerphone used.
Rooted, BAMF 1.3.2
GPS and WiFi rarely on at all.
I'm lucky, --LUCKY--, if I get like 6 hours out of a fully charged battery.

Just curious, why are you still using BAMF 1.3.2?

running Bamf 1.6.1 and Imoseyon Lean Kernal set at 1.4Ghz with SetCPU on Smartass, along with ATK set to kill every 30 mins(oh I know they are the devil, yet my battery life is always better with one, so no comments about how they are bad.) I also always have 4G on, and usually fluctuate between -82 to -94dB in signal strength, and wifi is never on, as my home network is strained enough as it is. GPS is always off unless I need it.
I also use WPClock Live Wallpaper at the same time.
Yesterday I was at 18% with 2 days since last plugged in.
Of course I also calibrated my battery, after flashing Bamf 1.6.1.
I use my phone alot for facebook, angry birds, browsing the web and a crap ton of texting, I probably hit near 1000 text a month, I know that isn't what the high school brats are pulling, but still, for me, that is insane.
On my Evo 4G, with 4G off, I could hit 3 days running CM7 underclocked to 750Mhz max. That was with a bigger battery as well.
I am very exited for CM7 to go into a beta, or nightly stage, and the kinks worked out, as I am sure with 4G on I can hit near 3 days with the Thunderbolt as well.

Overall battery life is a lot better than my cm7 Incredible, and on mostly standby it lasted quite awhile before I had to charge it (I couldn't use it for a few days because vzw wonked up on activating my TB somehow), so it lasted almost 3 days with only occasional data use/seeing if the phone was working (I couldn't send texts or make/receive calls, but my data was working)

LTE has arrived Milwaukee

Just noticed LTE in the Milwaukee area and SE Wisconsin this week. Download speeds are smokin' fast... take a look at the broadband comparison.

Noticed last night that we have it here in Pensacola, FL as well, and boy is it fast!
Have you noticed a significant battery drain now that you're on LTE? My phone easily lasted a full day with moderate use. Today, I am at 30% battery after only 6 hours. I've got 4 bars of 4g LTE, and have never seen my battery go this fast. Coincidentally, today I also experienced my first random reboot EVER with this phone.
Regardless, the LTE speed is stupid fast! I really notice it when doing things like voice dictation and voice search.... it's almost instantaneous. :good:

Jealous! Still waiting for it in Tucson. Hopefully this means they're actively expanding the network and we'll be up soon...we're supposed to have it before the end of 2013.

Haven't seen any significant drain. It could be that you tend to use more data with LTE hence the extra battery usage.

I live near General Mitchell Airport. You would think I'd be getting LTE but I've only seen it in the downtown area.
And I spoke too soon. The highest speed test I saw was 16mbps.

I actually noticed it at a Brewers game in late September, but it seemed like it was only right around Miller Park. The last week or so it's been more consistent. Hurray!

Just popped up today in Columbus, OH as well. Nice.

Just noticed that Minneapolis also got it. Just in time for thanksgiving.

Yes, in my experience with the S4 it's a pretty big difference UNLESS you get a very strong LTE signal. I'm on tmobile and now have the N5 and use the 3G setting which is HSPA/+ Plenty fast for me for what I do. When I want some extra speed I'll kick on the LTE

Does anyone have a more detailed answer for this? I just got this phone yesterday so I haven't been able to find out myself yet, just with 5hour battery life from 100% to 4% on what will only be half of its normal day I'm looking for anything to help right now till I get a battery case. This phone is one of only two to have a LTE radio that is supposed to use 30% less power than usual so I'm wondering if that makes it as efficient if not more than 3G for idle in your pocket to light stuff like FlipBoard.

it would depend on the quality of the data connection. im in brooklyn nyc, and use lte on my nexus 5 exclusively, used to use it on my nexus 4 as well. with 3g(hspa+), on both my n5 and n4, i average about 4-4.5 hours screen on time. when using lte, i average about 5-6 hours screen on time on both my nexus 5 and 4. after noticing this difference, i use exclusively lte on both my devices, as i average an hour more screen on time when using exclusively lte.

Serious battery drain can have many reasons. One is having LTE on, syncing on(if you just booted it up, and input your Google account and let all your apps sync and download, its gonna drain your battery fast the first time), having locations on and wifi enabled. If you are in an area with poor reception, your phone will drain more trying to find connection.

Thanks for the information. That's what I was wondering but I couldn't find anyone that had already tested this with these new radios. If I get the time this weekend maybe I'll do my own test in detail to compare LTE to 3G. Am thinking of using a TV episode on Netflix and see which makes the battery drop faster over the 30 or so minutes.
Slightly off topic, does anyone's WiFi show as always on in the battery monitor even if its been off? Still trying to figure out my battery drain issue, if it even is an issue with just me, I bought this phone knowing it had a small battery.

go to the main phone settings, wifi, 3 dots on the bottom right, advanced, then disable scanning always available..

Seems that's a whole other debate on weather leaving that on or turning it off helps battery life. Apparently if you turn it off then apps that want your location will turn the GPS on and waste battery (looking at you Facebook...), but if you leave it on the phone just tells the app your location from WiFi networks around you.
One thing I didn't think about is I had added my work WiFi yesterday but it wouldn't connect to it, wouldn't tell me why but I'm assuming it's because of bad signal as I'm a valet outside and the WiFi is from a bar across the street so I forgot about it but WiFi was left on with that network saved, my Nexus 7 can connect to it on most days and any laptop has no issues but with this being a phone I guess it doesn't have a big enough antenna. So I'm wondering if now that I deleted that WiFi network, and I always have my phone set to not notify me of public networks, if my battery won't die so fast today.
And now I'm just rambling but I just looked at my screenshot I took yesterday of battery use before plugging in at 4% and WiFi isn't even being shown on top six things that used the battery, lowest one being shown is a Chrome process using 3%.
EDIT: Well off to work now with my phone 100% charged, will have screen 100% (am outside in the sun), BT off, WiFi on (disconnected, no saved networks nearby, open network notifications off, always on during sleep, scanning always available, avoid poor connections, and WiFi optimization), LTE on/connected, NFC off. So lets see how things go. It will have tons of screen on time as all I do at work is read through FlipBoard, then if I run out of things on there I move to FB. Lets see how this goes...

Nexus 5 has it and its doing its job saving battery

Sorry for digging up such an old thread, but with LTE my Nexus 6P, it switches between HSPA and 3G. When turned to 3G, nothing changes. Would that mean I would save battery?

Hi guys. My battery life is very good when i dont use my phone. And i dont have mm-qcamera-daemon problem. But when i open wifi or play a game (even when i play flappy bird, not joking) battery drains %1 every 3-4 mins ( just wifi is on, i use greenify), and when i play a game battery drains %1 every 2-3 mins. Is this normal ?
I use stock kernel, i'm on ondemand governor, stock rom. I'm rooted.

Sounds normal to me, would make screen on time of 3 to 5 hours. That's not to bad... Compare to SOT of others in other threads...

video games are battery intensive. you can use franco's per app mode app and use that to throttle processor and gpu speeds since most games don't need full power to run

You'd think simple games would always be less battery intensive but that is not the case. I'm not sure if it's lazy programming or just the inherent nature of Java.

Idk I am down to 60% with only 1 hour and 20 min since being fully charged. I'm displeased with my measly 2-3 hours of SOT. I have seen others with 5-6 hours, don't know how they do it

battery life is all about how you personally use your device, how you personally set it up, which apps you chose to install, and very much about the quality of your phone/data connection. even if you personally do everything right, if your phone/data connection lacks(quality and speed), then your battery performance wont be too hot.

When I am at home, I turn off LTE and 3G. Just use 2G and Wi-Fi. Brightness about 40% and NFC, GPS off as well.

you would/should do much better on lte as opposed to 2g, unless your signal isnt good. generally the faster data travels back and forth would be better for battery, since the job finishes faster. i get an hour more sot using lte as opposed to 3g(hspa+).

I don't need the data. Like I said, I am using Wi-Fi at home. I just use the phone for voice calls and 2G uses MUCH less battery than 3G or LTE.

lol, i use mobile data too often. on 2g i get junk for battery life, and i dont use wifi at all as well. on lte, i easily get 5-6h sot without any effort at all(5h min every day). and on hspa+, i get around 4-4.5h sot usually.

Can't beat wifi if it's available. And turning down those radios on your phone and turning off NFC, GPS, etc is the best way to preserve battery life. I only turn them on if I need them.

depends on the quality of the wifi, not everyone has fast wifi. my works wifi(max 3mbps download) is terrible on battery, and rarely touch it because of that. anyways, why wifi when 30mbps lte speeds are around, and an unlimited high speed data plan

Because 95% of customers don't have unlimited Data. And yeah, my 75Mbps wifi is much nicer than the 6-40Mbps LTE that I can find around here.

yea, i know, its unfortunate. i think pretty soon most the world will be covered with high speed data, i hope at least.
