I want to flash a rom on my epic 4g. Does that wipe my paid applications? If it does then is there a way to back them up and restore them on the new rom?
You can use titanium backup to backup and restore them if you are rooted. Otherwise you can always re -download them from the market for free.

Thanks appreciate it
Tit backup is the best, but if u use custom rom, try to avoid intall busybox, coz that will screw everything...

If you are rooted, I definitely recommed TiBu and also paying for the premium version. It makes batch restoring of all apps quick and easy IMO

Hi, I recently got my nexus S, I'm looking to flash MIUI ROM into my phone.
Will I lose all my contacts, txt msg, etc...?
If so, how do I back up and import them after flashing the new ROM?
Hey! Glad to hear you are going to flash a new rom, if you decide to flash a New rom over the rom you are using "WITHOUT" wiping or factory resetting then your contacts apps will be there when you turn on for your first time on the new rom, however that is your choice, it is recommended by developers to wipe/factory reset before flashing new rom but, again, thatisyour choice, so why not wiping/factory reset when you can download back up and restore apps that will back up those paid apps or those important contacts for free on the market and they will back up on ur sd card and to later restore aftera fresh new rom!! Hope ihelped.

Thanks for the quick response.
I guess I will back up my stuff first before flashing new ROM. By the way, I have not root my phone yet, are there any application that I could use to backup my data, or do I have to root my phone in order to backup my data.
Data like? Apps or your network settings? Mms? Didn't quite catch that? Well first of all you have to root your phone on order to flash new roms, when you root you get what is called a "recovery" on there there is this option where you can back up your current rom also called " nandroid backup" it saves contacts, apps, settings, and data! Idk if that's what you meant. But after a flashing a new rom just go back to recovery mode and then backup/restore then advaced restore then choose data. It should restore your data.

I am curious to know what other people do to restore apps and associated data. Do you go to market and download all from "my apps" or do you restore from an app backup? Or is there a better way? Can you help a noob out?
Thanks

So you just restore app+data? That's what I did, just wasn't sure if there was a better way. And a big thank you, I love your ROM.

thank you.
yes, just restore missing apps+data. thats all i do.
Sometimes restoring data will cause issues when you flash new roms and the apps might now work properly. I always just flash Apps and then take like 10 minutes to set all the apps up again to be safe after every flash.

restoring MISSING apps and data has NEVER been a problem with me. you dont even want to know how many devices i have transferred my TiBu folder to, and restoring MISSING apps and data has not caused ONE issue, as long as I didnt go crazy and NOT go through and verify i wasnt restoring something Touchwiz related on my Sense ROM, or AOSP on my Touchwiz...etc.

Well I am just glad to know that I am not doing something that will mess up my ROM. I was nervous enough flashing the first time.

I agree TIBU restore apps and app data and be done. Only a few times the app data isn't restored when going from sense, touchwiz to a CM based rom but never had other issues. Flash rom the. Restore apps and data fro. TIBU pro and walk away whole it restores.
I don't bother backing up anything besides my contacts. I restore those first, connect my necessary accounts, and change whatever settings I need/want changed. Then I reinstall my apps.
Well, I agree 100% with Zel and Pirateghost there....Titanium Backup and later restore missing apps and data. As good practice, usually make nandroid back ups just in case.
The first time you flash a new rom is inevitable to sweat as a pig thinking that you will have to go back to your Motorla V3 is something goes wrong....
I don't flash as often as I used to so I use a newly flashed Rom to only reinstall the apps I actually use often. If not ill have a bunch of them I just downloaded and I'm not gonna use.
Plus reinstalling the apps myself and not titanium gives me a fresh Rom feeling lol, yea I'm weird.

I use very few apps myself, anyway, so it only takes a few minutes to set back up after a reflash. Most of those apps, I keep pretty close to default regardless. I run pretty minimal, so it's almost more trouble to take the time to keep everything backed up and organized for my devices than it is to just reinstall the apps each time I flash.
The posts here have given me a bit more to think about as far as TIBU, though, so I might take a deeper look into it soon!
Personally after flashing a rom I cook a slab of Bacon then shower. I then tibu my apps and launcher settings. You can imagine how much grease I take in while we are testing a new rom before release.

Thank you Bacon-Pope, your comments are (as usual) greasy, crispy, and delicious. Remember Turkey Bacon is neither turkey nor bacon.
after flashing
first thing I do after flashing is check WiFi phone mobile data camera then worry any apps. but I do use titanium backup and never had a problem. maybe I'm the weird one?

Titanium backup pro is the only app I will use to backup/restore.
ROM Toolbox Pro has EVERYTHING you'll ever need as a root user, all packaged in one epic app.

For those that are testing roms, how do you back up your installed apps/data to load to the new rom and get up and running quickly? I have 80+ apps that I really hate to have to reinstall or have progress reset every time I try a new rom. I have TB but have seen mixed reviews here on its results. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. I have already read the threads how to backup existing setup in case something goes wrong.

Make a CWM backup. Install new ROM, then go to Backup and Restore, go to advanced restore, then select the backup you made, and select restore data. That will bring back all of your apps/setting and such.

I apologize, I misunderstood your question......
I used CWM when I went from stock rooted 2.3.5 to stock rooted 2.3.6 to restore all my apps. I'd imagine there could be some issues if you used CWM in the same manner when going from stock rom to say RebelROM so for that I'd use MyBackup. I prefer it over TB any day. So use MB to make your backup of your apps (apk's and data) before flashing the new rom, flash the new rom and then once you get MB on your phone again use it to restore the apps, apk's first then data after all the apk's have been restored.
Sorry for the confusion
I use Rom Toolbox...it works quite well

I just tested a theory i had and it worked flawlessly. I just flash supercharged v5 and before i did i just wiped cache and dalvix and formatted system, i did not do a factory data reset. I then flashed the rom and everything went flawlessly. I still have all my apps and data from before the flash.

I have a rooted One S running Klin's Unofficial AOKP JellyBean Build 2 [9/19/12].
I have downloaded but have yet to use Titanium Backup. But I regularly back up all my system, data and settings with TWRP2.2
My question is what benefits would running a Titanium back up give me over the recovery?
Ta
You can backup or restore apps or their data one at a time with TiB
OK. Not sure why I would want to do that at the moment. I dare say there might be an occaision when I will, but it doesn't seem like a huge advantage. TRWP is just so easy to use.
Thanks

They dont really do the same thing as your recovery takes a backup of your whole ROM and your apps and settings. TiB is more granular and also cannot backup your ROM. You could compare them to PC stuff, then TWRP or CWM backups are like a whole disk image like what you can get with Symantec Ghost. You could restore this after your OS is completely broken and quickly be up and running again like you never downloaded that addon to see who has blocked you on MSN Messenger. A TiB style backup wouldnt help you then but it would be good to have a TiB style backup of WoW with all your addons, settings and goldfarming bots ready to go after you reinstalled Windows.
OK that makes much more sense. I'll give it a go. I have flashed four or five ROMs over the last few days and have noticed a twrp restore doesn't get things back exactly as I'd like them.
Thanks again

The only thing I use TiB for personally is to backup, uninstall and restore Swiftkey3 so it doesn't have to be setup again at every reboot, this is a jellybean bug with paid apps. Maybe not present in AOKP? Also works for other paid apps and widgets acting out apparently.
Hello
Do a fair bit of flashing/re-flashing of roms. Having to reconfigure all app settings, restoring text messages is a bit of a pain/slight annoyance
Could I just reflash a new rom (i always do a wipe beforehand) and then just restore the data partition from recovery? Or is it better to restore from titanium etc?

I'm not sure if that would be stable unless it was restored to the same Rom/version. I'd stick with titanium. But from experience it's iffy at best working correctly

You can use nandroid manager if you don't like titanium but yeah restoring data is like you didn't even wipe it in the first place. It may work AOSP>AOSP and Sense>Sense but AOSP>Sense and vice versa likely won't work at all or you'll have ridiculous fc's.

I highly recommend Titanium. It's super fast and easy to restore everything once you get used to it. I'd be much more hesitant to flash ROMs frequently without it. You should also consider dropping the six bucks for the paid version to support the developers of the app. It's more than worth it - one of the top 5 apps any rooted user should have.

Titanium ftw.

I'm with all the above, use Titanium for restoring apps and app data.
Restoring the data partition is almost sure to result in random and severe bugs (unless the new ROM is very similar to the previous). As said, its like not wiping (factory reset) at all.
