Rooted last night with Buddy's and so for everything seems to be working. I am assuming it was a success. I installed Titanium Backup and it allows me to remove the ATT bloatware etc...Is there anything I need to check to verify I am rooted and if so, correctly? I went through all my apps that I restored from ""MyBackup" app and everything is working.
I guess the next step is to learn how to use the installed ROM Manager and Superuser. Not sure what it is all involved but willing to learn. I am using Buddy's stock ROM that came with the program. Any negatives using this ROM? Before trying others, I have to figure out how to flash a ROM. I will be looking for a ROM without bloatware and sense. I use launcher pro and will stick with it. I prefer a smooth fast and solid performance.
I think my first mod would be to change my battery indicator in my notification bar and customize this area a bit. Any suggestions were to get started?

If you want fast and stable w/ being senseless, di11i's Gingerbeast is as good as it gets. If you want fast, stable w/ a lil more tweaking capabilities, CM7 is for you.
I use both on a regular basis and each has their pros.

There are guides on every rom thread for flashing roms. If you don't do well with reading instructions and are more hands on I found this video and it helped me the first time.

Good job mayne. I used ATTN's method and the WiFi did not work with the ROM in that kit. I posted here asking about it right about the point where you are, waited 1/2 hour, said eff it, and flashed one of the custom roms from the Dev section, which fixed the issue.
I noticed my data speeds were not as good as stock, and I live in a backhauled area and was getting >7Mbps down stock. I noticed I didn't have the latest ATT OTA radio, so I read some more in the radio thread, and flashed the latest ATT radio and RIL's, and the data speeds I was accustomed to returned.
The ROM I flashed is really really nice. IT is Sense based, like the stock AT&T. Some of the ROM's people will suggest are basic Android UI, while others are Sense based. I don't mind the Sense. It is technically a memory hog, and I only use one of the Scenes provided, but I like it. There are many ROM's to chose from that are basically stable. I never got stock GPS to perform to my expectations. However, the first ROM I flashed combined with the latest OTA radio amazing fixed the effin GPS!! Wow it's really responsive now.
My first ROM had/has a couple bugs. One was taken care of with re-flashing the ROM I chose again. The ROM I have now has one really small minor bug. I am living with it, as stock also had more major issues (GPS). The bug is associated with the kernel. This is another thing one can flash and change. I tried another kernel out vs. the ROM, but decided t had other variables with the performance I was experiencing, while other posters here love the optional kernel. Choices choices...
Be careful with Titanium back up. In general, do NOT use it to back up system data as part of the ROM flashing process. Usually flashing different ROM's from different dev's require full system wipe, like you did with the rooting process. It looks tempting to use, but multiple issues are discerned by reading the thread if this selection is used in TB. I suggest just using it for App backup, and if a problem with the flashing, revert to your Nandroid backup of your last functional ROM. Learn about that too....
Anyway good luck. I doubt youare going to stay with whatever ROM is in Bubby's kit...so just trying to give you a few pointers...since you asked , and because I like this sentence in your OP", "Not sure what it is all involved but willing to learn." yes you will...the radio thread, the one stickied page of this forum, are invaluable places to start and bookmark...

A few things that will make your flashing easier, because once you flash one custom ROM, you will end up flashing 10...
Create a Nandroid backup before flashing a new ROM. To create a Nandroid backup, follow these steps:
1. Get into Clockwork recovery. You can do this one of two ways: Go into ROM Manager and select boot into recovery. The other way is to boot the device while holding down the volume key. After the device boots, you'll see an option for Recovery. Select that. Also, some ROMs allow you to go into recovery by holding down the power button then selecting recovery.
2.Once in Clockwork recovery, select backup and restore, then backup.
The backup will be stored on your SD card in the \clockwork\backup directory.
This type of backup has EVERYTHING in it (except the radio). If you restore from this backup, and boot your device, it will be exactly as it was when you backed up--all apps, data, settings, etc.
I recommend backing up the backup directory to your PC. The backups are pretty big.
You'll end up with a whole collection of backups (I have about 10.), one for each ROM you've flashed. If you decide one day (or hour ) that you want to use a different ROM, all you have to do is copy the backup from your PC to your SD card and then restore from within recovery (wipe data/cache/dalvik first ).

Do not restore data using Titanium Backup if the backup was performed on a different ROM. It can really screw things up.

A lot of people ask about backing up and restoring SMS and MMS. The BEST way I have found is via Handcent sms. This is a great free replacement for the stock messaging app. It has an option to backup and restore both SMS and MMS messages. It work really, really well. The backup and restore does have a cost though. I think 3.99 a year.
To me, it's completely worth it. Using this with a Nandroid restore, and I can be up on a new ROM in 5 minutes, with all data up to date.

If titanium backup is working, then root is working. root either works or it doesnt

or you could just use GO SMS Pro (its free) to do the sms/mms backup restore....or an app called SMS backup+ (free) and it sends a copy of everything to your gmail so you dont have to restore all that stuff, its all in your gmail, mms and all
GO SMS PRO also gives the ability to back up messages and restore all messages... it's free app.

Thanks, I am glad yall said something about the TB not backing up data. I was getting ready to pull the trigger on flashing. Doing a Nandroid backup right now. So for I did a ROM backup using ROM manager, A apps backup using TB and now doing a Nandroid backup as described above. I should be cover and ready to go. Already have the zip file loaded in my phone.
PS; Been using GO SMS Pro, its the beast IMO

Hey isn't the ROM in buddy's kit froyo? If you want gingerbread you're gonna have to flash a custom ROM...
I am sending this thread with the WiFi hotspot teathering to my PC, that I opted not to enable stock because I have an unlimited data plan and I think paying 20 or whatever they want is stupid. My home internet is dropping in and out this morning for some reason..wah lah! I got tethering to phone's network and internet access! Woo hoo! And jsut as fast as my home WiFi. This is exactly one of the things I had in mind when rooting this phone. This is awesome!!!! Oh but back to the OP...
Oh yeah!!!! If you flash a new ROM, or even notice with bubby's kit ROM now, that data speed is not what you expect, or doesn't work at all, check the APN settings under Settings>Wireless Networks>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names. The ROMs as flashed may not have all the settings correct. There are posts and threads about setting the proper APN's for proper AT&T network access and it's easy schmeezee. Just one little thing that took me a few minutes to figure out initially while I was getting data speed of 200kbps down vs. the 7Mbps I'm used to...
Hey regarding the mods you are considering, check out the status bar of the screenshot of my current set up by clicking the below thumbnail..is this something like you are talking about? Hee hee I am just getting into the theming thing after getting comfortable with all the other more technical stuff.

Has anyone tried to restore MMS? I'm asking because the market entry says it backs up MMS to gmail, but is says "MMS not supported yet" for restore.

Ok just flashed my first ROM (Ginerbeast). Now how do I reinstall the nandroid backup I did prior? I just went the market and loader rom manager and TB again. Not sure were to go from here???

No. Do not restore the Nandroid back up. That is for if you have problems with your new ROM, and need to get to a known good restore point. It is there if you need it....start checking out your new ROM .

For those that are testing roms,how do you back up your installed apps/data to load to the new rom and get up and running quickly? I have 80+ apps that I really hate to have to reinstall or have progress reset every time I try a new rom. I have TB but have seen mixed reviews here on its results. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. I have already read the threads how to backup existing setup in case something goes wrong.

Make a CWM backup. Install new ROM, then go to Backup and Restore, go to advanced restore, then select the backup you made, and select restore data. That will bring back all of your apps/setting and such.

I apologize, I misunderstood your question......
I used CWM when I went from stock rooted 2.3.5 to stock rooted 2.3.6 to restore all my apps. I'd imagine there could be some issues if you used CWM in the same manner when going from stock rom to say RebelROM so for that I'd use MyBackup. I prefer it over TB any day. So use MB to make your backup of your apps (apk's and data) before flashing the new rom, flash the new rom and then once you get MB on your phone again use it to restore the apps, apk's first then data after all the apk's have been restored.

I just tested a theory i had and it worked flawlessly. I just flash supercharged v5 and before i did i just wiped cache and dalvix and formatted system, i did not do a factory data reset. I then flashed the rom and everything went flawlessly. I still have all my apps and data from before the flash.

I am getting desparate with my phone state SGS3, as funny things are happening like it suddenly goes crazy and opens apps after apps etc... Also applications that can not be traced, I am currently on 4.1.2 XXELL4 version, and I got advised to wipe data partition and cache, which as I understand it quite risky process of losing what I have, so do PLEASE inform is there a safe way, like you guys develop programs for us amateurs to do it automatically and safely, regaining our previous phone state?
My intention is to really get rid of junks I have on my phone and get a nice new obedient one I had before?

You should make a backup of all apps and contacts ( for contacts you can sync with google) and then go into recovery mode and do wipe data factory reset and wipe cache partition. Finally do reboot system now and then reinstall the app backup and restore contacts.

You can wipe cache and data
It would get your phone back in state as if it were out of the manufacturer's factory!
All apps you've installed would be wiped out

Thank you so much for your reply, actually I do have CWM on my phone but when I run it is says it should be used with CF-CWM v1.1 or newer and that I am running different recovery and various features has been disabled, so I did not follow your advise yet, can you guide me in this matter also? the one I hace is CWM manger v3.60.
Further to that contacts I have backup but for the rest of my programs will Titanium Backup (not pro version) do for me to call back and restore all of it?

Also I tried to download the lates version of CWM from this site but it is ttf format and I was not able to install it. As I mentioned I wanted to install on the existing one, as when I unistall a program from my phone and try to install another one it says old version exists and does not install it.

Use a higher version of cwm...I'm sure it would be floating around in xda
Also just do a factory reset from settings or flash a new rom that should solve the issue
And Use TB Pro ..(just a suggestion) much more useful and worth the price...That can restore app's data and app alone as you wish...
I installed TWRP, then rooted 10.4.2.18.
I need to start over as well, between the random app loading, gestures and stop, I think from scratch would be nice.

You can try factory data reset from settings app if you like. It is a variable on what you will loose and gain. It is a good place to start. Don't do wipe from the bootloader menu or wipes formats from twrp.
Note: Some wipes and formats can be used in twrp in the case where you will flash a rom after, when flashing stock it seldom helps.
Note: Twrp allows you to choose the name for your backup
You can also flash any of the asus stock firmware but you will have stock recovery (instead of twrp), probably loose root, and all of your apps and data.
My choice for best asus stock firmware is 10.4.2.18. It is not best for everyone but I like it.

For future reference, a factory reset will take your ROM back to the point of a fresh install. You will lose all data that has been added since first flashing your ROM. If you were running a custom rooted ROM then you will not lose root. If you go back and flash a non-rooted ROM then you WILL lose root.
If you have data that you need to keep, I recommend using an app like Titanium Backup. Go in and choose to do a batch backup up all your apps. Once you have done a factory reset, you can sign back into Google Play and download Titanium. You can then go in and restore the apps you want. I don't recommend installing all of those apps with their data. Titanium gives you multiple options on how and what you want to restore. Only install the individual app data that you must to have. Usually, I'll restore all of my apps with no data at all. I will then go back in and individually restore the app data that I need.
If changing a ROM, restoring app data for all of your apps can have adverse side effects. That is why I say to only install what you need. Hope this helps. :good:

I did label them, I backed it up - I think - right after I installed twrp and rooted it, ( I usually do ) but I'm not 100% sure so I didn't want to try and screw it up.

I'm generally not too concerned about loosing stuff, as long as I know WHAT I lost, so I can replace.

Checked and that's what I'm on and so far happy with it.
I un-installed a ton of apps, while I was waiting for an answer, and the thing doesn't seem possessed any more, so I'm adding them back in one at a time giving each 2-3 days.

ABSOLUTELY no reason for an appology. I'd done a search and not come up with anything I could use, and couldn't believe no-one had done this before.
Everything sounds good.
I need to give you one piece of info.
The only thing flashing twrp replaces is stock recovery. Everything else remains the same.

If you are talking about backup with twrp, by default system, emmc, and data are backed up.
Reset erases user apps and data; all basic data would need to be entered as if you had just purchased the unit.

OH! I was under the impression that it read an image from to the boot parition/recovery partition and wrote that. NOW I get it.

I use es file manager for working with both sdcards. I have used it since I received this tablet and find it very useful. Maybe uninstall and reinstall. For a root browser I use rom toolbox pro.
I have not used root.signed.zip but downloading and looking at the installation I don't find a problem. I'd say try it.

Just saw your post - don't know where I went ...
I do not have a custom ROM, so what you are saying is no matter how I start over, I'm going to have to re-install TWRP, re-root it and ad apps - correct? It seems to me that settings|backup and reset, I'll leave TWRP intact just reset.
OK, I'm somewhat screwed I think - if anyone's out there (sorry pretty frustrated), I cleaned the D-Cache and the cahe, better but not good. Then a settings|reset and the from within the OS and the same problem does what it wants when it wants, opens programs (usually google voice), pops up the window to set wallpaper, freezes etc. Then I restored a backup from early January from WITHIN TWRP, and cleaned the caches - same. Restored another and cleaned same. I have cleaned the system, as I cannot see/figure out which clean rom custom I can use on this, as I think that might be my only hope. Other than tossing in the junk pile as it's unusable like this.
Whatever is going on is IN the system, which leads me to a custom rom as my only possible salvation - (think I just said that, hum).
Any ideas?
hi, i am new to the samsung phones, i rooted my device. is there any way to update the firmware without losing any data and apps ?? currently i am at G955FXXU1AQDG indian rom and a new update G955FXXU1AQE5 is available. i downloaded that rom from sam-mobile. can someone tell me how to do it

AFAIK you can't. A rooted phone can't accept the OTA. You would need to Odin the stock firmware, update and then root again.

If you want to stick with the rooted stock ROM, my suggestion would be to backup your phone to the Samsung Cloud, then Odin the new ROM, then restore from the Samsung Cloud. You will get most of your stuff back, including screen layouts, widgets and apps.
If you use one of the fine ROMs by one of the XDA developers - they eventually usually come up with new versions that include the lastest bases, and many times, not every time, you can dirty flash it over your existing ROM and not have to restore much if anything. Of course, your experience may be different so make a nanroid backup via TWRP first.

thanks for the help, i will stick to the stock rom and restore apps from titanium would be better i guess.
I updated my rooted S8+ by making a nandroid backup with TWRP first and then flashing the updated ROM (which will totally wipe your device and remove root).
After that I flashed the TWRP recovery again, formatted through TWRP, and then flashed no verity/Magisk etc. I booted into the system normally once just to be on the safe side and check that everything was looking good.
Lastly, I went back to TWRP and used my nandroid backup and the restore function to bring back just the Data partition and my phone was completely restored. All apps, settings, wallpapers, text messages etc etc where restored with 0 issues exactly how I left them.
Keep in mind that the data partition will not back up user data on the internal memory like pictures, videos and some downloads. You'll want to copy the contents of your internal memory to a PC or external memory and then copy them back and merge them with the new folders at the end. :good:
