End Goal:
Control music playing on my Win 7 netbook with my Android phone in the car
(Ok that should probably have been my thread title, since there's probably other ways to achieve this without tcp/ip connection. Too late now)
Description/Details:
Netbook has Win 7 Thin PC (extra cut down version of Win 7)
Phone is Ideos X5 with Android 2.2
Ideally I'd like to use Foobar2000 to play music.
Netbook has Foobar 2000.
Phone has foobar2000 controller: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.cav.foobar2000controller
This works great at home, BUT.... requires a network connection between netbook/phone, as it sends commands via http
But when I'm in the car I have no fixed wifi connection.
Things I have tried:
- Creating adhoc wifi on netbook... Android can't see it
- Creating adhoc wifi on Android.... it just seems to share the phones network connection to the netbook. The phone can't make the foobar http connection with the laptop
- Creating bluetooth PAN. For some reason even though I could connect, I couldn't get the two to talk to each other. Maybe Android was just sharing it's internet connection again. Perhaps this is worth another try?
- Adding adhoc join support to Android... Unfortunately people in the Ideos X5 forum say this doesn't work on my phone
- Getting USBnet on Android to do tcp/ip over USB. Unfortunately my linux/android skills aren't good, and from what I could find out this either wasn't going to work on Android, or was too complicated for me
-Using http://www.connectify.me/ on the netbook... Unfortunately Win 7 Thin PC only supports .Net 4.0, and Connectify is pre 4.0. It could be an option to get another version of Win 7, but I want this to be last resort
Maybe I'm missing something really simple? A nice app available that will solve all my problems?
Help a noob out
Solved?
I know this is nearly a year old post, but did you solve your problem eventually?

I have a presentation coming up (few days) and I have a presentation that I made in Beamer which makes a pdf. I'm looking for an android app to work with my Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant that will let me control Adobe.
I've tried Gmote and it works wonderfully while connected to a network. Unfortunately the room that I'll be in will have no network access of any kind and so Gmote won't work.
I've tried to get the adhoc network to work with android, I got it to the stage where I could see the network and try to connect but it could not obtain an address.
Anyhow, any app that can control a pdf remotely, bluetooth would be great.
Unified Remote lets you controle a PC/Presentation/WMP and a lot of other stuff via WiFi.
I checked out unified remote as well, sort of the same problem as Gmote. I also did not see any way to control a pdf presentation with it.
I thought I would post my solution since I couldn't find a good answer for quite a while.
What I did was used connectify to make my laptop a wireless hotspot and connected to that with my phone. It makes a mobile AP so you don't have to mess around with the adhoc network stuff and it made me a mini LAN so that Gmote worked.
All in all pretty easy once I found it.

Nice workaround! :good:
But too complicated for normal, non-geek users.
So we decided to build a seamless, super easy to use solution to setup and control your presentations using your smarpthone.
It supports all major presentation formats, including pdfs.

I tried to test out the new Remote Desktop application in the marketplace. There weren't any reviews so I download the trial. It wouldn't connect to any my computers, and ended up throwing an exception then running out of time on the trial.
Anyone else have better luck? I really want an app that works with Windows' RDP without having to install any other software. It would be awesome to get Jaadu or something with that quality on WP7. I've used it on iOS and its a fantastic client.
Hey I just tried it out, but im not sure what the hell I am doing and what developer doesn't include a "How to" in the app?
Any knows how to use this windows 7 feature? I do have w7 pro...
I got the app to connect to my Windows 7 desktop at home so it does work.
I don't know how this app works exactly but there's no way it's doing a direct connection to your workstation or server because the WP7 SDK doesn't support sockets. It must be going through a proxy of some sort which may be a security concern.
The real RDP clients will come when Mango is released and sockets are supported. Until then there will only be proxy based clients found on the marketplace.
If you are desperate for a RDP client this one seems to work ok.
The first real RDP app!
I tried the app yesterday. It worked perfectly at the first try. I really need such an app.
Sadly after purchasing it, it did not work at all. But surprisingly sometime later it was alright again. According to the exceptions that were thrown it has to do with the proxy-server that tunnels the tcp requests over http.
The server seems to be a bit unstable but I guess they will improve it sooner or later.
So I think if you need a real RDP client for now just use it – it’s really working well as long as the proxy is up! It is definitely the best and fastest one on the marketplace. Of course under a security-point of view an app that connects directly would be much nicer (I think they will change it as soon as mango it out). On the other hand if it would connect directly how could you now that it is not also sending your passwords elsewhere (if you are not going to sniff the network traffic…)?
There are only some minor things which could be better:
- Ask for permission to run under lock only once - not on every startup!
- Pinch to zoom to be able to click with more precision.
- Better behavior for text-input. I sometimes can´t see what I´m typing.
But for a v1 version thumbs up from me!
waiting for real rdp protocol, that can be done only with socket support...
Hello,
I saw that there is no OBD software in the marketplace, so I assume there's no API for the OBD in windows phone 7??
If anyone has informations, I could develop a new obd tool... but I can't find informations about OBD..
If you mean by OBD the On-Board Diagnostics, all handsets already has one (provided by manufacturers). And it's nothing what you can do (if you'll not start manufactoring your own WP7 ) - all native code should be signed.
No, sorry, I meant the automotive diagnostic tool eheh!
It's probably because niether the USB or the BT connection allow to connect OBD interfaces. USB lacks host support and BT lacks virtual com ports support, so you have no way to connect the OBD interface whether it being KKL / ELM or whatever with the phone.
figured it was something like that.. any luck we will have support about this in the future?
There is a device for the iPhone that plugs into the OBD and creates a wifi network. After that it is just sockets. I'm sure you could make a windows phone version of the tool.
Found it: http://www.obdkey.com/wifi/index.asp
my buddy has one for android it communicates via bluetooth and cost like $20. He ran the codes on my caddy, very useful

and Windows:

and as soon as its possible there will be a version for Windows Phone 7, but for right now it cant be done. In fact I am trying to work with some OBD Connector manufacturers in order to find a way to get it to work.
Right now there is no Bluetooth API and no Ad-Hoc support which is what OBDKey and KIWI Wifi supports. All the back end code has all ready be done so as soon as there is a way it will be up.

This would be amazing if you could get it to work matey
I use Torque on my Android Tablet and Digimoto on my laptop and connect to my Bluetooth OBD-II Reader, if i was able to use my Windows Phone this would be a GREAT help!
ODB aplication for WP7 would be very good.
I was looking around the internet about 2 months ago and ran across hardware and apps that do this for android, ios,wm, and I think even blackberry...
I remember thinking that would be sweet on my windows phone. Way to show up my boss... Lol
I showed him the website and I think he's gonna look into it when the software on the current scan tool gets outdated since he has an iphone4, I got the hd7, and another kid has an android phone.. Would be sweet to just carry around the little piece that plugs into the port and broadcast the signal to the phones.
Do you think there's gonna be live data support or just a basic tool to pull engine codes. Possible abs, srs scan too?

Didn't know the USB adapters could be gotten for under $20 never mind software for the PC for fairly cheap. I always thought these adapters could only be gotten for around $300+.
I dont work on cars for a living but, if this could be all gotten and working on my WP7 device for under $30, I'd be all over it. It's always usefull to have one of these type of things around when a code comes up on one of our cars and not have to run to a store that will not reset codes, etc.
I might even grab it for a old WM 6.5 device I keep around for a spare....
any app for OBDII gauges in WP7.5 ????
Bump, it's been a while, anyone find anything for WP7 or 7.5 to do this ?
It's been a while for this thread - any updates on Windows Phone and OBD-II? Wondering because I want to expand into Windows development too, rather than just Android.
Hi Guys,
I have been a long reader of the forum, but never actually posted, so here is my first! (Apologies if it's in the wrong section, I have done a search and as its my first post, I'm restricted as to where I can post)
Recently I purchased a Western Digital MyBook Live (3TB) and have it synced to my Windows Phone (7.8) the other half's Galaxy Note (running Jelly Bean) and her iPad 2, via our router - Great!
I have the 32GB Surface RT and there doesn't appear to be a WD app other than WD2GO which only lets you connect to the MyBook when connected to the home network. It actually states this is a limitation in the release notes.
Has anyone come across a way of accessing the content on the MyBook from an external network, without being connected to my home network? So if I'm round a family members home, at work etc...
Many thanks!
Bassmonkey
Sorry, but bumped.
If anyone can...
I've the same problem, if anyone figure out how to access the unit from a remote connection please, share here the workaround...
In any case this limitation on surface rt is because the unit doesn't support java, and the w2go from WD run on Java . I think this iusse could be bypassed using ftp access, by till how I'm not able to setting Up a connection cause my isp (Fastweb) has limitations using public IP
[email protected]
Edit: in the link below you can find a way to bypass the RT limitations using it like a pro. Unfortunatly I'm not familiar with Windows Azure and can't try this solution. If you or someone has success using this solution, please, share it.

Hi guys! After searching for months on google I decided to ask it to pro developer of this awesome forum. Is it possible to have a Direct Wi Fi Connection between my Android device (Lg L5 e610) and my PC (Win7, Ubuntu 13.04, Mac OSx Snow Leopard)? Is there any tool or program to do it? Or at least a developement project (I like to be a tester)? I found some solutions for my question but they need to a router to work :crying: and i haven't it
Sorry for my very bad english and applauses to this awesome community!

Not exactly what you are looking for but could work

Yes there be plenty of ways. If you want commanding access thru the command line and you're running root, then try wireless Android debugging bridge (usually found under developer settings I think) or download an ssh server app from the market place (some don't require root and you can find a good list of apps to test herehttp://android.stackexchange.com/questions/9905/is-there-some-ssh-server-for-android from Android stack exchange) further more if you are running root and you want the screen and all the GUI there are apps that let you do this too such as Droid vnc serverhttp://www.google.com/url?q=https:/...dycANA&usg=AFQjCNGQZqmOFJI8BJfOYyjJ9Gi1sjm_Rg
One weird word of warning about some of these; if you're on a nice network service provider, then some of the above apps work over 3G or 4G too. sooooo set a good password and don't forget to turn it off when you're done with it
So that's something for android what about the other end of the connection? The client side of things
On my laptop I've access to Vista and Ubuntu 12.04
For Vista I use Putty to connect via ssh and it works fine over wifi. I have yet to figure the GUI side for Windows but I've been working on it.
For Ubuntu I use remia to view the GUI of linux running on Android, works fine but have yet to test droid VNC server for the android GUI. And sshing in through command line wasn't a problem over wifi.
For more info on the android linux to pc connection see section 7 in the bellow links to the guide I maintain for such things.
Edit- I see that the formatting using mobile XDA app still leaves me wanting better functions, I'll see about fixing it when on a PC. In the meantime try this app
[APP][2.1+] SSH Server - SFTP, SCP, multiple users, per user public key auth, no root

Well I've been able to run server and client services on either side of the following setup;
1 turn wifi tethering on one device (I'll call this device Wabafet)
2 connect to Wabafet with another device (I'll call this device Q)
3 run what's my IP searches for Q and for Wabafet
4 start server service on Q and client services on Wabafet
5 connect to server on Q with Wabafet and enjoy
Note; this set up keeps Q from being seen over the rest of the net, and some kind of port forwarding is needed to make it viable outside of the local wifi network
Note 2; if you connect a third device to Wabafet as a client you can still access the server on Q
Note 3; if you run a server on Wabafet and on Q then both can also run client services too and connect to one another
Note 4; if you've got a wireless router then you can skip the part about wifi tethering and instead connect Wabafet and Q to the router instead, however, this may require port forwarding to be set up on your specific router.
As far as wifi to wifi without a router or hot spot... I think setting a static IP in your wifi settings on Wabafet and on Q and then turning on but not connecting to a router should allow the devices to scan and connect to one another... But this will require some kind of client server set up again and will require that the apps being used don't require an active network to start. Droid vnc is a good example of this and has been reported to work over bluetooth too and even when the device is in airplane mode when the app starts.

likely you can use the same apps and set up on the device side of the guide and then modify the pc side of the guide to suit your needs, such as mac, vista and such. For windows I would suggest putty; its very friendly and there are many good guides for how to use putty as a client on the web, but let me know if you need help with that too oh and hit the thanks or something if this is at all helpful or let me know how better to help.

WiFI Direct is supported out of the box for Win8 as well as JellyBean. However, they way they are supported, even thought you can "pair/connect" over WiFi Direct, you need an application to take advance of this "pipe". As far as I'm aware there are currently no apps that can directly connect a Win8 device and an Android device over WiFi Direct to share a file.
Coincidentally, I'm working on an app that at least can do so with Android. Based on the OP's post, he seems to be describing AirDrop. I think what I'm doing is "better", but users will tell =) I am putting it out on limited Private Beta soon, so if you're curious to what all the buzz/fuss is about, go to www.get-drop.com.
