[Q] [REQ] Internet Passthrough - T-Mobile LG G2x

The G2 and the Sensation have an internet passthrough option that allows you to use your PCs internet connection on your phone.
Is there a way to get that feature to work on the G2X? I would prefer it be native, like the Sensation, or is there an app that can do that?

Wifi??
Suprah..."no cyanogen, rom manager still fake flashes the roms thats y for nvidia phones we have to use nvflash"

Like... reverse tethering? Have a 4G data stick for your laptop and no data plan on your phone? Or just not have WiFi? Only situations I can think of. Very odd and probably rare situation, so I hope someone can help you out.

Yeah. It allows you to use your PC's internet connection on your phone - reverse tethering

The only thing I can think of is ... nope, I can't.
Was gonna say proxy, but you can do that without creating extra overhead. Perhaps some sort of spoofing.

You can create an internet s
If you go to internet sharing in windows xp, vista or 7 you can create a pico-net whereby your computer's internal network card broadcast a network, it must be a ad-hoc network. The range will be about 50 ft and your phone can pick up on the wifi. I used to do this when I had cricket and needed to hook up devices that didnt have a USB drive.
Cheers!

Could somebody enlighten me as to why you wouldn't just use wifi? especially as you can get a wireless router cheap

To prevent the issue of throttling, I could use the internet on my work PC on my phone. No access to Wi-Fi it works wonderfully on the sensation. Any hopes of this being ported?

I can see this being useful in places where only a direct Ethernet connection to a PC is available... travel, motels/hotels w/o wiring, etc... Every method to limit mobile data usage nowadays is much appreciated by me at least.

Wi-Fi Tether and PSP

Can the PSP's wi-fi pick up the ad-hoc "router" frequency of the Wi-Fi tether app? I'm thinking of buying one but I'd like to know if I can use my phones internet on it
no, the PSP can only use ad-hoc for system to system, it can not use ad-hoc for internet access, tried it and researched it, sorry for the bad news.
edit: but still get one, I love mine when I have time to play with it

Does the same apply to the ps3? I haven't messed around with the settings much, just curious.

hmm.. alright im gonna try to do this tomorrow regardless since its the psp 3000, maybe it has something new? and theoretically it should work since theyre both wifi b so i'll see. i hope it does
I repeat, it is impossible on PSP ANY MODEL, unless you want to add new wifi hardware it cannot happen, sorry I spent 3 days researching and trying this, can't happen.

If you get the right wifi tether program, it supports Infrastructure mode, which isn't Ad Hoc. Which means, it should work fine for you. That's how the official Sprint app works and you should be able to connect to that with anything.

[Q] [QUESTION] how do i create WIFI??

ok, lets begin.
1. i live in usa
2.tmobile usa 4g
3.i am not talking about using the 4g network on a laptop via wifi hot spot
4. i am not talking about using the PC internet on the phone through internet passthrough
5.i am not talking about using the 4g network on a pc/laptop via usb tethering
i am asking if i can create wifi through my phone.
my phone can use my pc's internet via internet passthrough. can it then take that internet and make it into wifi so my laptop can use it?
I DONT WANT TO USE THE 4G NETWORK ON MY LAPTOP.
my phone is not rooted and will not be rooted(bricked an hd2 awhile back and still not over it)
i hope i made myself clear.
Lol, that must be the most confusing question ever. And no is the answer.
just get a cheap wireless router and connect anything you want

No. Your phone's ONLY CONNECTION THAT IT CAN CREATE ( and other devices can utilize) IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE based off of T-Mobile's HSPA+ network.

Oh my, are you saying that you have internet on a pc and want to connect pc to your sensation, so to use a phone as a router to create WiFi, so that you can joint that WiFi with a laptop.
I can imagine that to be useful feature if you need to get internet on a laptop where you have some internet connected public pc.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
If above interpretation of your question is correct. Than you need to split the task into two parts.
1) get internet pass through working.
This means, get pc internet working on your phone. Make sure to install htc sync on the pc, otherwise it will not work. Reason, you need drivers for the phone. So for public pc it is not always possible to install htc sync. If you intend to this configuration for home than just get router and forget this.
2) create WiFi hot spot from your phone.
Way too easy to explain.
Summary,
It can work but:
For public pc - it's a problem to get drivers installed on the computer.
For home pc - it is easier and more convenient to get router.
Recommendation
Forget about this idea.

I think you mean pass-thru, so you can use your phones wifi as an wifi adapter for your laptop?
best way i can explain it.
i want to enable wifi on a netbook. i have my htc sensation and my pc with internet. i want to put the pc internet on the phone and then spread it as wifi to my netbook.
yes yes i know a router is more practical, but not at the moment

[Q] got the "tethering function blocked" from T-mobile yesterday

I got the "tethering function blocked" text message from T-mobile yesterday. This is the first time I have seen this and I did STFA before randomly posting. Now true this is the first time I have done tethering on the upgraded Gingerbread OS (currently running the rooted GB Weapon 3.0 ROM) all previous times I tethered were on the Rooted Froyo OS. I also noticed that after receiving this text message when I tried to use the internet browser on the device tethered to the phone I was directed to a T-mobile page stating that tethering was blocked and if I wanted it, it was an additional $15USD monthly cost.
Yes it appears that all the provider's (US= ATT, Tmbl, VW, Sprint) are now actively clamping down on devices tethering without a tethering plan included (probably hitting the large Metro-areas first -- I was in Houston when it happened = #4 largest), how exactly they know it is happening, I don't know.
I have seen where others have made comments about this but they were at or above the 2GB monthly limit. When I got this message from T-mobile I had used 400 megs of my 2GB allotment for the month, so I was nowhere near the cap.
Anybody know exactly how T-mobile is blocking this feature on rooted phones?? is it done on the T-mobile servers, does it send some data packet that alters files in the Android OS or does it alter the SIM chip files???
Has something changed in the Android OS (some sort of tattle-tale) or does T-Mobile have some new capability that can "sniff out" whether or not you are using the tethering option on your phone without enrolling in there "enable tethering capability" feature for a mere $15USD monthly of extortion? Say what you will, but I do not see where I should have to pay extra to tether a device to my data plan if I am below my allotted data usage per month, and no I have never exceeded the 2GB limit during my contract.
I saw a post about EasyTether, which says that it has a way to mask its operation (utilizing the same ports as the cell phone does for data ?????) so that the carrier cannot tell that the tethering option is being utilized. But it appears that it only works for USB, not for WiFi. For me tethering is about 50/50 -- for PC's I use the USB, for my tablets I use WiFi. So is there an app, driver, etc that works for both, or a way I can apply an update, edit a file, etc. to get the USB and WiFi tethering option to function properly without T-Mobile trying to extort me for more money every month??
I have seen the links that say to change (or use add-ins that will change) the web browser user strings, and did not find a consensus that this truly works.
I found links that mention freezing the Tethering Manager App (do search for -- How to Get Free Wifi Tether on Rooted T-Mobile Galaxy S2 on youtube and you can see the clip), which I would try if I could find the App. I have refreshed the Apps list in Titanium Backup and searched for a reference to this App (is it possibly named something different for the G2x running a Froyo or Gingerbread based ROM?) and no luck, I did not find it in either ROM so at this point I am not sure what to do.
any help on this subject is appreciated
I'm not quite sure why T-Mobile would be doing that, especially when you didn't go over your limit.
My suggestion would be to just use a 3rd party wifi tethering app.
I personally use the Wifi tethering app from opengarden. Since your phone is rooted you can use it. It also doesn't use any of your 2gb, so you shouldn't have a problem with tethering anymore.
Hope I helped!

Tmo has told me in the past they'll eventually catch up to you
and start charging for it.
I don't think they can possibly track it from a 3rd party application that requires root.
In fact I'm sure they can't, they can only track how much data you are using. They may be able to track the tether built into the phone, but especially not a 3rd party application that requires root.
I have been using Open garden's wifi tether, and never had problems from T-Mobile.
Give the open garden wifi tether a try, if your g2x is rooted. I'm pretty sure that they cannot track it, and it also doesn't use any of your allowed 2gb since its a root required app.

Simply not true. There are many different ways to monitor for tethering based on the packets. TTL and user agent would be the easiest to implement.

Thanks for the information on the open garden app. I was hoping for a single app that would work for both USB and WiFi tethering but it is not looking good, so in the mean time I guess I will just have to use separate apps for use on PCs and Tablets.
as for the data usage, I don't see how an app could bypass ticking the data packet counter as files are downloaded, I am sure it counts any data packets being pulled down or pushed up from the cell connection. If not - I am sure any wireless provider would be scrambling to close that loop hole as quickly as possible.
The only way they can track it is by putting it into the o.s. build. I have NEVER seen that messgae and i live in atlanta. I tether my phone EVERYDAY to my laptop when i have to download certain files for work. I have been tethering for about a year and a half now.
use different browser. This happenned to me one day while using firefox, i switch to google chrome, i'm back on business. Dont know why thou.

I have the sgs2 and it was blocked from the start. I would guess that with this newest horse**** update they rolled out for the g2x they included the files to block tethering. But all you need to do is root the phone install titanium backup pro and look for a file called tethering manager and freeze it then you can go back to tethering for free. But make sure you freeze it DO NOT DELETE IT!!! I heard a few people say when they deleted it it f***ed up the phone
I don't know if that is definitely the solution but give it a try and report back please.

The G2x was rooted 2 weeks after I got it when it had Froyo. It is currently on Weapon3.0 and it is rooted now as well. I hunted around for the "tethering manager.apk" file(s), and I was unable to locate any reference to it. I do have root access enabled and I have also enabled the "view hidden files" in the file manager and I still did not find any tethering manager file(s)

rooting a friends phone:
Try Open Garden or WiFi Tethering (root) apps from market.
You've conflated a couple questions here.
"Which ROMs have a built-in feature for WiFi tethering?"
Most, if not all, do.
"Given that T-Mobile generally prohibits tethering, is there a way that I can tether in a way that I am not blocked by T-Mobile?"
Yes, there are several ways that you can make the traffic appear as though it originated on your phone. Most, if not all, of these are applications, use of things like VPN or ssh tunneling, or configuration of your tethered clients. There are several approaches. Search is your friend on finding one that works for you and that you are comfortable with.

Yes that works or just go to settings>wireless and networks>tethering. No need for an app if its built in but if you want one there's plenty to choose from
Wifi tethering used to work no problem on my phone but T-Mobile very recently seems to have changed something where they can detect it - on ICS ROM's - and block it in the browser on your computer. It takes a few link clicks to get the blocked page.
For this - I have to switch to a google related user agent to not have wifi tethering blocked.

that's funny, i'm using aokp (latest team acid build), and i was just using wifi tethering with no problems at all. not to mention that i'm not even supposed to have it since i have the new plan "truly unlimited 4g." the problem i do have though is usb tethering. i gave my team members a log to see if its fixable the other day, but haven't heard anything yet. its no big deal to me unless i wanna use it to tether my pc when our dsl daily cap is reached (which is everyday, but "i" don't use the pc everyday). basically just gave em the log to try and help those who do want/need it.

It was new for me. And only through the browser. Still connects no problem but after several clicks it will pop up a T-Mobile page saying I don't have the tethering package. I am on Raver's ICS Audiophile.
I was tethering just fine on vacation last week, until I got a text message from T-mobile saying they were blocking it, and sure enough it quit working.
I gotta look into the user agent spoofing I guess... at least before my next trip.
(All three of the hotels I was in were changing $5-10 for internet!)
T-Mobile is on a roll!
Didn't actually think they were gonna give something for nothing did ya.
They know that with strategic planning...(lower the plan price and give you more data)....if they give a little....you'll want more,so now they can ask for more, and sleep soundly when they go to bed at night.
So mine got blocked too, took me a couple of hours last night but found a way around it using Bluetooth Open Garden and VPN combination. Back to free tethering....victory over TMobile!....for now at least.

Yeah, but it's possible that was just because I was trying multiple solutions. I'll look at it again tonight and see if I can substitute the Bluetooth with WiFi and keep it working. I think it might be in my proxy settings....it was late and I was happy to just get access.

I thought with Google Chrome you have to have the Developers Tools open for that to persist. Is there a simple way to make it stick without having to have the developer tools window open? Thanks.
Edit: Ok, so tried the APN switch on Google chrome last night and it did work, while the developers tools window is open. Only issue was that some of the sites that my wife uses that have display issues on mobile web now have the same issue on the PC...I'm not talking about page layout, but specific links and options not displaying....the reason she still needs to use the PC in the first place. I can definitely recommend the APN fix to people being blocked by Tmobile as a quick simple fix as previously stated in this thread. It took a little longer to set up, but I'm sticking with the VPN for full functionality.
Regarding the wifi use with VPN; I haven't been able to get it to work yet, so sticking with the Bluetooth for now.

[Q] A general question about tethering.

This has nothing to do with a certain ROM or anything like that, just a general question. Now, I was wondering if my GS3 is connected to WI-FI, and NOT using any mobile carrier data, can it share that connection through USB tethering to a PC or laptop? I've looked everywhere and all people seem to do is share their DATA connection with their devices, and nothing for Wi-Fi. Thanks in advance! -YK
That doesn't make any sense. Wouldn't you just connect your laptop to that same WiFi hotspot?

My bad, I forget to clarify that my PC can't connect to Wi-Fi because it's lacking a wireless card. And just my luck, there are no ethernet ports anywhere.
Then it might be time for a hardware upgrade lol. As for sharing your WiFi connection, I can see it being possible for USB tether, but I have never heard of such a thing. My guess is that there isn't much demand for said feature.

I've known several people who demanded for WiFi tethering, too. All, business related.
To my knowledge, I do not know of a way of succeeding, due to that I've done research myself.
If anything close enough to it, would probably be USB tethering or Bluetooth tethering. But, I haven't tried those personally. Running on CM10.1, which those options are available,
I wanna saw I saw a feature like you're looking for in PDAnet. If you have a few dollars to spare I'd def throw in a PCI Wireless Ethernet Card
Oh whale.
Ah, even after all this time, there is still lack of such a feature. Oh well, just have to wait till I can scrape up a wireless card somewhere.
