Gingerbread 2DAY? - Thunderbolt General

If you dont already know we have heard that today is the day we are supposed to be recieving the long awaited gingerbread update. This came from a lead and has not been comfirmed, but we can HOPE!

You know how many threads there are about this already?
Sent from my HTC Thunderbolt.

Even though I live in Nevada, I don't gamble but, I'd bet on this one NOT happening at all!
Verizon themselves would be chattering about it if so.

BORING. It's not happening. Maybe a mr2 within the month, but even that's hopeful.

exactly and not old threads at that.... and as confirmed by many devs, today is not the day for gb

Might I make a suggestion? How about y'all take a look over in the dev forum. Take a long, hard look at the roms available over there. The 605.7 builds are solid, but the radios for them are junk. The MR2 builds are... scarce to say the least (I think there's a whopping 3 of them?). And the Gingerbread builds are all built from a very flawed alpha leak that these guys have boldly and skillfully nursed into something approaching useful. I would be shocked and amazed to see Gingerbread officially released by the end of the year. They've known for a long time now there are serious issues with the officially released radios and we don't even have an OTA that tends to THAT YET. How is it that some VERY, VERY, VERY fake looking announcement hooks so many of you? Really. I mean, do you REALLY think that overweight button-pushing slug across the counter could tell you the radio version of the phone he just handed you? Or better yet, that average Joe that slug just handed the phone to! What this SHOULD tell you is that anything looking as FAKE as that press release or whatever it was looked AND displays such superfluous details such as the radio version is.... oh, what's that technical term I'm looking for.... ah, it's BULL****. Some of you need to look at the top of your phone. See that funky checkmark? Yeah... just like the one your teacher put on your homework when ya got the answer wrong... and ask yourself "Gee. Considering this is Verizon, the SAME folks that brought us the Blackberry Storm, is it remotely likely they're going to surprise us with a sudden update to the latest and greatest?" You're answer should sound like "Uh... no... not even if I went to the CEO's office and performed fellatio on him until 'can ya hear me now' sounded like 'caaa ya ear eee owww'.

Easy killer..

ha, that's funny

...other than being glacially slow and having a nearly nonfunctional web browser I think I'm the only person who genuinely liked the storm... I kinda miss my clicky screen. With a little bit of hacking it got a lot better. In any case, I'd feel better about Verizon's slow updates if it ever seemed to reduce the number of bugs, which it doesn't seem to.

I know I'm taking up space and this should be merged into the other identical threads, but I'll use it since people are referring to it.
For those of you who are electronically inclined, are familiar with Android and your Thunderbolt, check out the gingerbread ROMS that are available and stable (research will show that some are more stable than others.) Of course this is directed for the people who aren't already running custom roms.
If you don't know what a rom is or don't care, obviously the developer forums should be avoided. Also, I've seen many people post things like "I hate reading threads and I just need the answer," these people also shouldn't be tweaking a phone.
But for those of you comfortable installing software and firmware, and are interested in learning about the process, I highly recommend doing research on flashing roms and deciding if it's something you can handle.
The BAMF release candidate is MUCH more stable and reliable for me than the stock rom was. I haven't been hacking Android except for a couple of months, so I just spent countless hours reading and learning how things worked before jumping in.
I haven't tried CM7 RC1, but I'm HIGHLY impressed with BAMF Sense 3.0 and it has made me life my phone a lot more. Again, I know many of you are veterans and I am not insulting anyones intelligence, but due to some rumors I see in this section about "my friend's friend bricked his phone" I thought I would share something on the positive side.

It was another leaked test build. No OTA. So as fitting as my name is in light of my near- world famous rants against gullibility might be, I was right: no OTA. Kinda curious how good the leak is though.
But really, ya shouldn't believe everything ya read on the internet. ESPECIALLY when it looks and sounds as fake as that "internal memo" did. Some asked why someone would fake that. Well, because watching some of you lap that stuff up is kinda humorous. Am I the only one that laughs at folks gossiping about long awaited, magical pink unicorns?
As for the Storm2, it was decent hardware with a short lifespan of support. I have the S2 to both my wife and my girlfriend and both are flat out dead paperweights today. I just got tired of replacing them after SIX OR SEVEN of them. So did my friend who went through 3 of them. He's the guy that got me on Android.

Is the captivate going to be abandoned?

With the new entries into the at&t android scene, will the captivate be left behind by the devs? A couple have already picked up new devices, is there cause for concern?
There will be others who step in, and given that you can run vibrant and i9000 roms there will be new stuff going on. The i9000 forum is really where the action is anyway. If hardcore and supercurio move on then I would say you have seen the end of what can be done with the sgs.
Porting vibrant roms, simple kernel/modem swap? Can it be done before and after flash?
Hope not.
@mccord
Yep, I usually boot the rom then flash the kernel and modem. Sometimes it wont work simply swapping them first.
It already has been abandoned. Jump ship while you still can.

Solid info, any recommendations? ;p
My point in the thread is this, were will development be in a month, what are our options. I9000 and vibrant ports are solid options. I don't think many understand how easy it is to do on their own
It will carry on no matter what. Browse around. Heck there is still stuff going on with devices that are 5 years old and older. So no it will not ever "end"

The new entries that is rolling out now, IMO, doesn't have the "wow" factor for anyone to upgrade and renew for another 2 years or even 1, yes opinion. I just returned my Inspire cause of it.
The Atrix, we will see. Accessories, accessories, accessories...reach deep in the pocket for it. Not worth it, ....we are just talking about a phone.
Samsung Infuse...oh yea... Neveragain.
I predict 3rd quarter, then "man overboard"
Development for these phone are easy for these devs, as long as leaked firmwares keep on popping up, and they have been. We all should be safe for awhile.
Sorry for the rambling...morning java...strong.
But yea, what newter55 said
I don't know if this indicative of how many people actually OWN a captivate, let alone DEVING...but I often find that next to Android development section of the captivate the number of viewing is usually around 300. There's still lots of captivaters, and I don't think everyone is in a position/able to jump ship.
I don't see why people are so worried, I'm looking into getting a Captivate myself. I know it's no Inspire 4G etc etc. But it's still a relatively new device. I know when I started in the WM6 days, people were still making WM5 roms etc for old devices. You will see people still working on them.

Oh of course. I have been away for a long while. The last device I owned was a HTC Kaiser. Been with Blackberry since then. The Rhodium in my sig is my mothers that I tweaked for her.
Why do devs not like the Captivate? I've been looking into getting one to be able to learn Android and be as helpful as I was back in my older device days.

Interesting. Funny that you mention Quality control, my brothers brand new Captivate's screen went out under a month of getting it. It's like the screen decided not to turn on one day.
I've wondered this myself. I feel like if development will continue after the next 6 months its going to be on cyanogen... but hey. I'm relatively new to android so take what i say with several grains of salt
If the atrix lives up to the hype ill be abandoning my captivate....unlocked bootloader and its over

I feel that the amount of work the devs are putting into this phone are making it a great device. I switched to an LG Quantum recently (and love it) But thanks to the joys of owning a sim card, I switch to my captivate at least twice a week. Go to the LG Quantum forum, and you'll see why. There isn't much to do. Not much hacking, no OC's, no UC's, just questions like "What case looks prettiest on my phone?" =/
This even applies to the majority of Motorola android phones, especially MOTOBLUR devices. There just isn't that much to do with them. As for the Captivate, there will always be some random, somewhat useless feature we're all going to go gaga over. ("OMG I CAN TAKE PANORAMA SHOTS.... MUST SHARE WITH XDA...") It's just the spirit of the Captivate forum. We're all in the same poorly navigated, highly customizable boat.
*group hug* xP
Well the origianal droid is about as customizable as the galaxy s it has gingerbread already...and honestly up until recently most of the "custom" roms were just bloatware free versions of vibrant or i9000 versions of TW. Andromeda and serendipity and supernova all are themed giving a feeling of something new and fresh....if we could get some aosp builds then this phone would really be great and we would see some true custom roms.....the devs are what's keeping the galaxy s alive.

Get sensation again or samsung hercules maybe?

Hey people, this is my first post ever, but I've lurked for awhile so hello!
Anyway, I had the sensation a few weeks ago for 12 days then decided to return it because I wasn't too high on sense and coming from my rooted and rom'd vibrant it just didn't seem like a drastic improvement like I was expecting.
Now since htc has promised us an unlocked bootloader and the devs are so close to cracking it anyway...I have a small dilemma lol...
I was holding out for the hercules which is ironically coming out around the same time the sensation should at least be opened up finally, so here us my question...what would you guys recommend? Wait for the hercules which most signs are pointing to it being a better performer stock for stock, or get another sensation and patiently await root (again)?
I like the hercules for what it is and could be, but the one thing I REALLY appreciated about the htc despite all its shortcomings was the qhd screen. I despised the speaker and call volume, and its general performance as an actual phone...but I will be keeping my vibrant for that regardless.
With all that said, what you guys think?

Well...I don't consider my thread an "important" one by any means, just a simple innocent question. Either way, I've always felt that with internet forums...why do half of you even waste the time replying to a post if you're not really saying anything that will contribute? That hercules is a myth highly doubt it comes out believe the hype if you want . Buy a phone for what type of user you are Plus in two months from whenever you buy a phone a better one will come out ,its impossible to keep up . I wish they slow down so developers of app and games can keep up to many non compatible apps for new phone . The one thing apple do good is have one os so every app and games are compatible. Android got like six versions that aren't interchange with certain apps ugh.

I'm confused on where you read or got the notion that the Hercules would be a better performer stock for stock? It's not even out, not one has touched it. It could be a friggin Vibrant all over again (yes, owned it, GAVE it away, POS, don't care what you think). Vibrant sucked, EVERYTHING I've touched that is samsung sucked. I've never used a samsung phone that I liked but that is my own opinion.
That said, get the sensation, unless you like touch**** UI and if you do, once we have S-Off, I'm sure some idiot will port that POS UI to our phone so you can have it that way.
Sense 3.0 is a resource hog, that is why it can SOMETIMES feel laggy. Once we have S-Off we can start flashing some of these streamlined ROM's and I'm sure it'll fly. Maybe even get a Sense 2.1 port which will be even faster. And one day, CM7.
You wanted some opinions, there ya go.

Sweet...an unbiased opinion at last...
Well, personally I'm not a bandwagoner when it comes to smartphones (because they ARE just phones moonlighting as computers nowadays), but I would think that the less complicated UI, extra 200+mb of RAM, 16gb of Rom as opposed to 1gb of the sensation, a slightly larger screen(with lower res obviously), and the capabilities of an unlocked bootloader out of the box would indicate that the Hercules PROBABLY is better stock for stock then the sensation IN SEVERAL ASPECTS...just saying.
Whether or not it IS better is subjective obviously I know, but they will both be very versatile when unlocked, it just seems as if the Hercules might be a tad better statistically, and I'm pretty sure it's a better PHONE based on my experience with my sensation...as the speaker, call quality and call volumes, and ability to hold a call just were not great at all and frankly any other phone probably can't be much worse then mine was. Whether it was my particular phone or not, dunno, but it kinda sucked and I was pretty disappointed. It seems as if these are not isolated problems either as I see negative stuff being posted about the sensation all day long on here...but I still liked it as a multimedia phone/web surfer/great camera/etc.
As far as samSUCK as you say, my vibrants been fantastic for me. It wasn't all that nice stock with all the issues we all know they had, but it was GREAT once I started running roms and very few phones when it first came out could top it storage wise with 16gb of stock memory plus 2gb of rom in addition to an SD slot. The Hercules just seems like a better bang for the buck overall but I still appreciate the sensation for what it is and what it'll hopefully be capable of. I would love to own both, and probably will...

Your still guessing at statistics. Nothing has been released. It very well is possible it will just be the Infuse but you know T-Mobile, they like to change stuff up so this is all hearsay. You do know that the Infuse does NOT have the SGSII's processor, right? As for 16Gb of built in storage, yeah, it's nice BUT, when you go over that, and I do, it's actually more of a pain (in my experience) to add an SDcard and figure out how to tell the phone what goes where.

You just made my point. Vibrant is GREAT, with a DIFFERENT ROM.
Are you looking for someone to argue with, or truly looking for others opinions? You asked what everyone else thought, I told you, then you act as though I'm supposed to give you an unbiased opinion. It is, as you asked for, my OPINION and, probably the only one you will get.

Cool...thx

slowing down - stay rooted???

ok... looks like the interest in the TB is waning. new phone options are coming available. posts and threads are slowing in this forum and others. development is slowing (Th3ory hasnt put out a new rom in like 1 1/2 weeks now ).
is it time to find one ROM for a daily and settle in? at some point will it make sense to convert the TB back to stock and run with verizon and its updates?
i probably will keep my TB for another year. any thoughts?
thanks

Yes interest in the TB is slowing and therefore so is development.
Yes newer phones are coming out
Switching to verizon and their updates is a turd choice though unless they come out with something utterly amazing and 0 DEV's here adopt it. Will never happen though unless the entire community is dead.

Sorry man, but I read that OP and thought "What is this guy thinking?!?!?" Go back to stock and take whatever Verizon dishes out? I don't grasp the mental process that would conclude that as an option. I don't think interest is waning. I'll check that dipstick after Verizon sells it for free, or close to it, which is usually when sales get real good. Th3ory isn't exactly a benchmark of ROM development either. In fact, cranking out ROMs at a rate of any more than once every month is kinda unusual. BAMF went nearly 2 months without so much as a revision. Chingy usually goes at least a month. I don't understand what the deal is with Synergy and their goofy nightlies... how much can you tweak something before it's junk? I point to Ziggy's kernels as having exceeded that limit.
I came from the dInc. When I left that device as a primary device I stopped paying much attention to the ROMs for it. Now when I go and look around over there, there's heaps of devs I never heard of (a few with egos WAY too big for their sig), cranking out ROMs of all sorts. I know they hate to admit it over there, but the dInc is DEAD. If you want to see a device that seems dry on interest, visit the dInc2 forums, or some of the Motorola device forums. Or a LOT of forums, really. I don't know where you think devs are going since there isn't actually a better device worth upgrading to on Verizon. And don't say the Bionic; that thing was obsolete almost the day it launched, and the launch of the Inc HD WILL kill it. If you don't think a lot of the dev from that device will trickle down here, may I point you to all the stuff from the EVO 3D that's already made it's way here.
@ loonatik78...
yeah i guess after re-reading my OP it's kind of hard to take seriously. the TB is my first smart phone. never even knew there were forums like this that supported the phone, nor had i even a clue that these things could be rooted and modifed in such a way. certainly glad i googled my way XDA.
support has been wonderful here, and frankly find your posts well worth reading. thanks.

as for going back to stock - well not a chance.
Even if it's the end of the line for sense updates (as far as from verizon), there will be updates to AOSP ROMs like CM7 and OMFGB long after as many phones have.
Switch to a new ROM? For example, Synergy has many updates a week currently and shows no sign of a stopping point in the future. Not to mention the ROM is completly badass and runs smooth like buttah
When was the Tbolt released, Jan or Feb of this year ? Interest will wane around Spring '13... A lot more people keep their phones for the two years or so that VZW "rewards" than you think. It's been what, six months ? The HTC Eris forum is still going strong, just as an example!

If only aosp roms had working nfl app and gps for me. Even with fixes, most apps that use gps either put me across the world, or just error out.
Guess if dev stalls, I might just have to learn to build roms myself.

First off GPS works fine, second yea, the NFL app is still wonky but I strongly believe there are better alternatives on the market.
Second I would say go to OMFGB, since our phone is in their tree, any updates they make go to our phone, so even when we are forgot about we will still recieve updates as long as their team is around.
Also, synergy is not a bad choice (Especially if you like daily updates), BAMF forever would be a good choice as well. It was just released and runs super smooth. Plus updates are coming every 2 or 3 days at most.
Also, (And hopefully, final) we should be getting a Sense 3.5 port soon, (Team BAMF is currently spearheading that operation).
So sorry to tell you but development is still going strong.

sorry, but I'm not the only one having problems with gps on aosp ROMs. It's not just getting a working signal before flashing. Even after doing that and maps finding me ok, most apps that need gps to find you, such as search, gasbuddy, etc, end up placing me at least 2 miles away unless wifi is on.
It's ok, really don't mind sense ROMs. I freeze, uninstall a lot of sense parts and use different launchers. Playing with shell 3d right now.

Building has proved challenging but as far as taking a leak and debloat deoxed and add root busy box WiFi tether that is very easy. Even adding a custom kernel is very easy. Tweaking extra settings is where I am lost right now such as RAMdisk edits and other such tweaks need info.

[Q] I Can Haz Ice Cream?

So its going to be released pretty soon.. what are the odds of the Captivate getting some love?
http://techcrunch.com/2011/10/19/in...axy-nexus-and-ice-cream-sandwich-android-4-0/
Unfortunately, I'm going to have to go with 'Nil.'
The chances are non existent. It just makes business sense for for these updates to take forever. I do understand there are some hardware issues with the updates but in the end the average consumer is going to purchase a new phone or use their upgrade in order to get the latest os. If they keep updating old phones to the newest stuff people would hold onto their phone longer. I mean, ths is the first phone ive ever owned that I could flash custom roms onto. Before this I was locked into the operating system and whatever user interface was on the phone when I purchased it. If I hadnt found this forum or custom roms I would be frustrated by the lack of gingerbread and probably would have used my upgrade by now.
No hope. Most of the features aside from the UI wont work anyways due to not having the hardware (NFC) or lack of CPU and RAM (Camera features).
Just get a nice theme
they have it up and running on fascinates, as of 5AM this morning
We didnt even get official GB and we want ICS.....lol so greedy we people are...
Hell yeah Well rogers got the official gb , but att, com'on, forget about it.
First, do a little more searching. There is alreadya thread open for this topic.
That said, we will never see an official update. Our only hope of seeing it is from a port, courtesy of a device that does get it, or wait on CyagenMod to start on CM9.
Be patient. It'll be ported eventually.
I find it amazing that somone already has it somewhat running on their fascinate. I guess all the great Cappy dev's have jumped ship
Well, i'd be surprised to see ICS for our captivate. Even if cyanogen mod is getting ICS, i probably won't jump because of the superior call quality and slightly (if not better) battery life on captivate ROMs.
I thought there was some sort of court ruling forcing google to push the same version of android to all phones that were capable. I could be talking out of my ass though.

Um I did? - and even the XDA board didn't give me the topic yet so meh.
And someone has this starting to run on the Fascinate?? The Captivate is THE phone that seems to get the most love besides the Vibrant for this range of devices.
And I don't care how we get it... as long as someone is able to wedge it into the phone.
You know, it's open source.
Any of you asking for it can take a crack at it
I am seriously inexperienced, but this might be a good start to a programming career..

Nope, not even in the ballpark. Google has no legal obligation to any phone. What you are thinking of is how Google made the main phone produces agree to try harder to keep the phones up to date (up to one and a half years past release aka 18months). But that did not extend to the carriers...
Else they have to stop using the "Android" name and Google's apps

If you actually go poke around the Fascinate forum there's one guy who claims he has it running but hasn't offered any sort of proof. I think he's just looking for attention, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

So, I wouldn't have the first clue on how to get jelly bean on a sidekick. But I hear its a pretty versatile OS. I was wondering if any of you coders thought it would be possible to do?

We don't even have GINGERBREAD! This phone will never run Jellybean.
lol... is this a troll or what? We have Froyo = v2.2. We would all love v2.3, v4.0, or v4.1 (jellybean). All of those are POSSIBLE, but no coders have done it. I think it is damn-near-impossible unless we get some Samsung source-code (which I thought I read was released a while back, but either I was mistaken or just nobody has stepped up to the plate yet).
(mods: this should be moved to general)

Sduvick and windxixi got pretty far into the porting process.
The problem is that while Samsung did indeed release source code to the linux kernel and select other bits, their source drop was a mess. There are a huge number of differences between the SK4G source and stock Froyo kernel source.
Someone who was very familiar with the changes between Froyo and Gingerbread could probably move the process further along. But no one with that knowledge has taken interest in the SK4G, and as time passes any such knowledge wil fade.
It's a shame. I have the money to buy any phone I want, and that is the SK4G. To me, it's ergonomics (keyboard-design / 4-main-hard-buttons) have not been topped by any phone on any carrier at any price.
If I had the time to learn just how to do all the stuff required, I'd gladly spend the time porting JB to the Sidekick.
I was of the impression that not all the driver source had been released
Code wise the device is a trainwreck hahaha
Also, it's not like sduvick, windxixi, or Samsung spent any time commenting their code. There's no documentation to speak of. It's a cluster*@#&*.

What a shame. This is a pretty kick ass phone. Thanks for clearing that up for me. And yes, I understand you're making fun of me for asking. But thanks all the same.:crying:
Misleading title :/
Ok, so i know I've been away for A LONG time now, but, bear with me. Instead of put a bounty like most sections do to get 2.3, 4.0 and possibly jellybean, how about we just chip in a SK4G. I know that might be a big give away, but the main reason i didn't think developers where interested in this phone is because,
1) It kinda had barely any advertising, and when it did it was fairly short.
2) It's a budget phone for people that want a smart phone, like me and many others now a days.
3) During the time this came out their where many other big phone being released like the Galaxy S2.
So why don't we try to scout out a developer that can help us with this by offering a SK4G for them to work on, maybe even get this portal worthy as bounty.

I agree, i kinda gave up hope on anything past GB on this phone. But to be honest, i can see this phone coming back next year because of how popular it was when it did hit the market for the first few months. If they do make a another android sidekick i will be willing to buy it just to see if they worked out the kinks and not make another Frankenstein of a phone. Also i will be willing to throw in some money, and if i have to i can look into providing a Sidekick 4g.

Q3 of phones is basically passed, Q4 nothing major is really coming out besides the rumored Note 2. Other than that right now its Galaxy S3 and One X, which in my eyes the One X might have the S3 beat if we can get the source code for the One X. But other than that, i dont have high expectations for Q4.
I don't see how this phone doesn't have at least gingerbread. I have an HTC hero, and I have been looking at the specs side by side. I have to say it looks, to me at least, that the Sidekick is more capable of running these roms. I have already run ICS on the hero, and it runs nicely. The only reason i can see for not porting these newer roms to the sidekick is simply a lack of users and developers. I think there is less user base for the sidekick than the HTC hero, not to mention the previous incarnations of the sidekick were plagued by issues.
But to close out, I honestly think the sidekick is more than capable of running GB, ICS, and maybe even Jellybean.
