[Q] Thinking about getting WP7 mobile - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi im thinking about getting a hd7 with windows phone 7 and being a ex android user am thinking of something different so got a few random questions that have probably been asked a few thousand times.
1. wp7 looks a bit plain in general lots of text etc, can any kind of a background be added by options or a dev firmware.
2. can normal aps be found e.g a full working facebook application with chat etc, or just its own built in offering
3. what would you prefer android or wp7
4. is this best on market or have i missed some newer ones (uk)
5. anything good you can do with wp7 worth telling me
thanks all who help its appreciated

1. No backgrounds, but if your into customizations, there is a thread all about that
2.Lots of apps out there. You can search the marketplace through several online places and check them out, Google it...
3. I prefer wp7, others prefer Android, sone prefer IOS, some like wm6.5
4.I like the focus by Samsung, the LG is interesting because it has MFG
5.It works, no tinkering required, it does what I need it to do really well. Your experience may vary considering what you "need" it to do and where you live.

For the OP's benefit, the Samsung Focus is the US model - the UK model is the Samsung Omnia 7 (which I have and really like).

many thanks for the reply, sorry been trying to get some users pointers - fed up of android - seen one seen a million handsets running the same - plus i felt why should i have to keep modding it to fix basic problems. but th\ts off topic lol.
1. shame on backgrounds kinda odd. any specific thread or search terms or anything you reccomend i look at
2. thanks will have a google on that
4 whats MFG?
5. nice to know no tinkerings required, kinda highlights what i said about android
thanks for your help, its appreciated

1. WP7 has rather big icons, so don't wory, you will not miss background after that.

HD2 or Nexus One?

Help me choose!
Usage:
1. Watching video, mostly movies, without the hassle of converting formats, etc.
2. Browsing with the best experience possible
3. Cool things like on the HD2, i.e. Playstation emulation, bluetooth peripherals, USB Host functionality etc.
4. An easy to understand file system. I'm uncomfortable with Linux, thus my hesitation with Android.
Time I want to keep the device:
About two years. I want something reliable and something that won't bore me after a while.
Thanks for any help you guys provide.
I hope you are aware that you've already made your own choice.
Everything you've said is hinting at the HD2 already. Do you need us to reassure you that you are doing the right thing? It's really just a phone OP. Get the one you want. Don't let anyone else tell you what is right for you or tell you what you should want.

I actually am completely sold on the HD2, however the fact that in those two years that I'd want to keep the deivce, Android will probably be all the rage and we'd have the HD2 completely outdated without any WP7 support. That is my only concern.

What's your point?
You already stated that you're uncomfortable with Linux. And you pretty much want the HD2.
You can't have everything in this world. Pick one, use the device, enjoy the device and get your money's worth out of it. If you want WP7 support, wait one more year for the HD3. I'm pretty certain by then you'll have a 1.2 Ghz dual-core 4.5" screen monstrosity with a 2000 mAH battery pack running Windows Phone 7.
Whatever it is, do not buy the HD2 under the assumption that XDA will definitely port WP7 to it. To be more precise, buy a device for the features it has now, and don't bank on features that may or may not come.
What does uncomfortable with linux mean?
See if you can have a play with a decent android device and see if the usability improvements over winmo is worth it?

Go for Leo, definetly the fastest device out there.
Don´t worry about upgrading to WP7, it will be possible for sure with the great Chefs and Devs from XDA
Android is nice and some are looking for it because it´s new...on my opinion is nice but immature and limited for now.
I´ll stick to WM for a while.

Totally agree that xda will port it... But I dont think it would never reach a level that you can use it on a daily basis...
See android on wm devices... They have ported on many devices ( more than an year of work) but not fully fn for use on a daily basis ... Unless i missed something
Have to disagree
I have HTC Universal who originally was designed to run WM5 and now I am using it at it´s 100% capacity with WM6.5.
I don´t see why it can´t happen the same to Leo upgrading just one generation to WP7, it has the power and as I said the great minds here @XDA will sor it out for sure
Andorid example is completely another stuff, to port one OS to a completely different build device, that is limited for now but perhaps later will be full and stable, who knows...

Ah, but WM5 uses the same WinCE 5.2 kernel that 6.x and 6.5.x have, so porting WM6.x to WM5 is very easy because everything is well documented, and everyone knows WinCE 5.2 inside and out already. The drivers, the bootloader, the file system, and everything else are all compatible because it's the same exact kernel. It's a whole different ballgame when you have completely different OS kernel (WinCE 7) that nobody here knows indepth, which has specific hardware requirements and most likely needs a completely rewritten SPL, drivers, etc. and uses a completely different file system, and ROM update system. It's not going to be easy, if even possible at all, to port WM7 to the HD2 without getting the internal Microsoft builds they're testing on the HD2 (which will never be publicly released). What I'm trying to say is, don't get your hopes up on a WM7 port.
@OP: As others have said, you've basically made that decision yourself. Android is based on Linux, so if you don't like Linux, don't go with Android. If you get the HD2, get it because you like the features it currently has, since you will likely not see new ones besides a somewhat functional port of Android and some backported software from newer WM6.x phones. The HD2 will probably stay the way it is now, so only buy it if you're willing to stay with the same everything for the next few years. That being said, all the devices you listed are very popular, well made devices, and I don't think that you could really be unhappy with your device no matter what you get. I do know, if it makes any difference to you, that a PSX emulator was shown on video this week running on a Nexus One and USB host functionality was ported specifically to the Nexus One as well.

Yes you are right, but still have my hopes
Something for sure can be done
The thing is though, I will not have an always-on internet connection on any of these phones. Even then, it won't be 3G, it'll be EDGE or GPRS. From that standpoint, how much functionality of each of the phones will be reduced? Android has the push e-mail, social integration and app updates that need internet to function. Do you think without internet much of the functionality of the homescreen and Android itself (over Windows Mobile) is negated?
Why not the dell streak? It just came out in the UK, it has a 5" screen, which is great for videos. Also, ZodTTD is working on a PSX emulator and the streak should be getting a 2.2 upgrade within a few months (sooner with the root progress over at modaco). Engadget review.

Edge or GPRS works great for things like facebook updates or email. WinMo is old and will not be receiving new games or programs. Also, you dont need the facebook feeds and other crap android has. I rarely use them.
Okay I waited on buying the phone today and probably will not until I have a definite conclusion. Please, if anyone with any of these phones answers this I would mighty appreciate it. I am only doing this because WM will soon be outdated and this is my chance to jump onto the Android bandwagon. If I can be convinced that any of these phones can perform as I am used to in Windows Mobile, I'll switch with the feeling that I've bought something future proof.
Questions for Android users:
1. If you have customized Windows Mobile, how is Android in comparison? Do I need to have a comprehensive knowledge of Linux in order to customize it? In WM you usually just install a CAB file or edit a registry entry. Is it the same in Android, or easier?
2. How is movie watching on the screen? Does it look good for a two hour or so movie or would I have to squint?
3. Same question as above for web browsing. Any Flash support? Can I read an article online without any squinting?
4. Is utilitarian app availability (e.g file managers, task managers, CPU speed editors, etc.) as good as Windows Mobile? This is one of the more important ones.
5. How is the camera in either Android devices? I'm going to do a lot of video capture, and as such how are the results?
6. Is there any sync software available (such as WMDC w/ Windows Mobile) for Android that performs similar things, i.e. backing up all memory, contacts, pictures, etc.?
7. Which of these devices has had better community progress? The Nexus has been hacked to have USB host functionality and lots of custom ROMs are being developed. By a community support perspective, which one is better supported? The Desire or Nexus One?

Your point 1 leads me to advise you to get the HD2, but honestly I think it is too big for a phone.
I'd go with the Nexus One anyday. Froyo just made it even better.

Are you doing the customizing yourself or installing a cab file? For android we install apk, zip files, or we apply a metamorph. That may sound hard but trust me it is very easy. If you like to make your own there are plenty of guides online.

The N1 easily. It is very easy to unlook and with no risk of bricking. The Desire on the other hand is something you have to cross your fingures and hope you get lucky even if you do everything right.

btw what WM device have you used before the Nexus that makes you say this?

I've had a Wizard, Tilt, Fuze, and Tilt 2.
It was really hard for me to leave the WM enviroment, but once I did it I never looked back. The only things I miss are native office mobile apps. The ones android comes will only support viewing and not editting. Since I rarely used this on WM it's not an issue for me but could be for some. There are some apps in the market for this though.
Also you will need to download a file manager, but there are plenty of great options.
Divx files are no supported for now. You wil need to convert all video files to an mp4 format which sucks, but you will not regret it.

Android on the Arrive/7 Pro

Searched, and haven't found a thread on this.
I'm due for an upgrade in July on my Sprint line, and I was almost certain I was going to go with the EVO 3D (when it comes out), but then I saw the HTC Arrive and kinda liked it. The thing is, though, that I really like Android as well. I know dual-booting Android was possible on the Touch Pro 2, so I was wondering if it's possible to do the same thing with the Arrive/7 Pro, or if having Windows Phone 7 prevents it from being able to do this. Thanks!
It cannot be done as of now.
Sent from my T7575 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
The HTC 7 Pro has the same SoC as HD7 and HD2, and both of them already have Android.
Why Android still can't be ported for 7 Pro?
I'm pretty sure that hardspl must be available before we can flash custom roms on our pros. More imporantly some sort of application like haret for WM6 but for WP7 would probably also need to be developed first. Hopefully some fine day it will all be possible like on the HD2.
i was looking at how they dual boot with hd2, and it looks like they boot from sdcard, and flash wp7. we shouldn't need to flash wp7, but booting android is sdcard boot. so i see no reason why we can't boot from sdcard, unless we need a special boot loader, and the boot loader they need doesn't have the access to wp7 to get the boot loader working properly and that goes beyond me please correct me if I'm wrong.
why would anyone want to put an unsecure, laggy, fragmented, built from stolen code OS like Android on a fine device such as the arrive? wp7 is leaps and bounds superior to Android and once mango arrives it will be even better. thus the need to do this isn't necessary.

and also many articles that say the opposite. Dont just spew out stuff and say it as fact. Other people have different preferences.
iOS is just as fragmented as Android. Only thing is that Apple controls the fragmentation so dumbass developers dont try making completely universal apps when they dont know how the hell to do that.
And fragmentation isnt an issue for consumers. Its perfectly fine. So i dont understand your bias against it unless you are a developer.

I really don't care whether you or anyone says android is worse or better than wp7 but it would be nice to switch if one wants to. so when there is a thread discussing the possibility to port android on the 7 pro, there is no need for no-sayers, since they can occupy their brains with other stuff.
i would love to see this, but especially since there is only 1 sd-card, its either flashing one or the other i think...

Hello all,
I am new to mobile phones and I would like to post some questions, which are general in fact, but closely related to the topic and the Arrive device.
I would like to have another OS on it and I have found a way to change the SD cart it is running with, so I should be able to change or modify it with no trouble.
I imagine that I could find another HTC device with identical hardware and deploy it's ROM to this one in a manner similar to HD2's approach. I am so new that I already can feel how dumn is that ... but still.
I need to clarify some basics in order to know what to look for. First of all what does the firmware does and how it is related to the OS. Can I imagine it is something like BIOS, which controls the main hardware like processor, ram, telephony, etc? If so what stops me of formatting the SD and booting another system from it on the same hardware.
Another thing is what the ROM contains and how it is related to the OS. I am with the impression that it has everything in it -- OS distributive, firmware backup and bootloader maybe. If that is correct am I free to cook a ROM that contains the same firmware (as I imagine it like a BIOS alternative), the bootloader of another system and its distributive? Of course the ROM that is already on the device may and most probably will try to stop me, so I will need to somehow format it.
I do not express myself too good due to lack of expertise, but I know computers and I believe you will know what to tell me to straighten my thoughts.
Thank you in advance for any information you provide.
Sincere,
drel
At this stage, pesonally, I think wp7 is the best os to me. At it is not laggy as android does and looks more beautiful than iOS...

Bump. Having no Bluetooth SPP has just pissed me off for a year. About to get an Galaxy Nexus S come May, so I don't mind tinkering with my Arrive for now.
hello?
Any news about dual booting android on arrive / HD7 Pro? I read the thread and some users just talk crap. " Why this? Why that?" Why not, may I ask. I Love WP7, i really think that beats the crap out of everything else. But why can't we dream of having android too? As far as I know, Android has at the moment much more apps ( free and payed ones ) available than WP7. My brother-in-law has veetle ( just an example ) on his Xperia S, and he can watch live football/soccer which I can't cuz there is no veetle available. And who can name veetle, can name many others too. The point is: Combining the best of two worlds would makes fully profit from our beloved phones, which we payed ( at least I did ). I really hope that some news about this stuff.
Best Regards

[Q] WP7 - a mistake?

hello friends, i have been using WP7 for almost 7months... now i kind of regret for having chosen WP7, bcuz of lack of apps n customization... i just saw my friends Android and it was so damn cool... the app selection is the best n apps have control over the phones vitaal functions like messaging ( u can replace native inbox) , start screen n so on...
now what i wanted to know is any user here who has used Android n WP7, i request your suggestion; is Android really good or though there are many apps is it not stable ?? which do u feel is better ??
You can use the search button and read through all the existing threads. Otherwise all people will do is repeat what they said before and within a day there will be huge arguments. Seriously, use the search button.

I dont even think about Android anymore now that i have mango, super sleek!
Yep. Android is cool. It has all those cool stuffs. Sold my hd7 cause i need a phone that can do wifi tethering and android phones are the only phone i know that can do it right. The only thing cool about wp7 are the smooth UI but it kinda gets boring...

Apps will become less and less a problem
A ton of new HQ apps have been released:
- IM plus (expect it to be mastered once Mango gets officially released)
- FB (now supports push)
- Vevo (!)
- AccuWeather
- Kik
With Mango:
- Spotify
- Skype
(hopefully whatsapp as well, they have the API's they need now)
plus all the other stuff like multitasking all works really great and the ease of use and productivity will increase significantly.
What more does one need, now we can also have unlimited sideload apps on Mango. Its worth the wait, it will only get better once nokia will release its mapping apps and stuff.
Some of the apps can be replaced on android because the native ones are crap, with wp7 you can ask yourself do you really need other apps or do the native ones just do their job fine.
You can install Mango and give it a go... if you still dont like it, restore back to NoDo and you will still have your warranty.
In my experience Android can get laggy, drain battery and be a bit unstable at times with apps crashing.
WP7 on the other hand is smooth and easy to use.
I don't miss any apps from Android but you may have different needs.
Get Mango on it, you'll soon change your mind.
WP7 is in it's infancy so of course it isn't going to have as much as android or ios, but it is growing.

Yeah once Mango gets here he should be mostly satisfied with WP7 (since push notifications will actually work and the internet browser will actually be useable)
Also, all the "cool" stuff you're seeing on Android... It has no use. Is changing the SMS interface really necessary if the Messaging hub already works really well? It's fun to screw around with that stuff, but that's all it really is.
WP7 is how a true 'smart' phone should be. Quick, slick and beautiful in it's own way.
If you want customisation... buy an Android phone. But Android is laggy and bloated. Yeah you can change almost anything, but it feels as if the device is 'fragmented'.
WP7 has a smooth togetherness which I love.
Thumbs up MS. Keep up the good work. Mango beta is far from perfect, but MS seems to be listening to it's users!!!!
This is a loaded question...
However...
Once one decides if the limitations that the OS have make it difficult for you do the things you NEED to do it's a pretty easy decision.
Mango does indeed take the things that WP7 did and make it even better. There's not a lot of change in the deep OS strategy though. WP7 is about content and not computing.
You cannot customize it to your hearts content because the UI is built on a standing principle on UX.
Android = computer emulation
WP7 = Mobile empowerer
You can do a whole lot more on Android and it will probably stay that way as Android continues to push the limits. WP7 is more polished, more refined, more dedicated to its useful purpose. It is also much more locked down. Android is more green fields, do anything you want and how you want and with that strategy comes good at everything, master of none.
Excellent analogy. Very well put.

Great reply!
I avoided Android because of these opinions but honestly right now it is quite refined too.
It is somewhat true WP7 is having better workflow that other OSes but for me lack of features and quite boring UI after some time disappointed me.
As it was written here so many times, WP7 does it's job in some areas in elegant way.
However Mango may be the first finished and more refined version of the OS. Currently it's quite poor IMO. And quite illogical to be honest.
If I would be someone to give advice, I'd say wait till the end of the year and drop it now unless you're a dedicated MS enthusiast.
As for the above analogy - I prefer computer emulation than.
I had an omnia 7 for 6 months and now have a desire Hd. I loved the omnia and windows phone 7 for a couple of months, but I became tired of waiting for the "march" update and brought a dell streak, which within a week the screen and glass broke So got the desire HD. I have to admit I'm loving putting custom roms on this, but looking at the vids and pictures and demos of the mango update; I'm seriously considering buying one of the new set of devices, mango loaded of course. Looking at the rumours of a 16mp 4.7inch 1.5ghz HTC wp7 device, that may draw me in Wp7 is so refined and i have tried out the ie9 browser in mango and it is seriously at least twice as fast as any android browser I've used, and 5 times faster than the crappy safari browser on my ipod touch.

questions before buying a wp7 phone

hi guys
i have a couple of questions before buying a wp7 phone
i want to buy an MS phone but im afraid that it doesn't have the "openness" that android offers
does wp7 have a "do it our way" ideology like the iphone ?
am i stuck to something like "itunes"
i noticed that when u press search Bing shows up
can i choose google instead ?
thanks
hello to you! i have been an android user since 2009, also an iOS user since 2008... now I am a happy user of a windows phone wich i tell you sincerely that you wont miss that android... I'm feeling like i was reborn, with an apealing look, everything seems to be at his natural place...its very stable, you wont meet these freeze from android or iOS..besides that, seems to me that internet explorer is faster than ever...you have the same high quality games like iOS. And yes, you can make it in your own way...microsoft has developed an app like itune, called zune, but you wont depend on zune... anyway, zune is more friendly than iTunes! so, i truly recommend you a windows phone with mango... its purely awesome!

this sounds great !!
im planning on buying a lumia 800 after 2 months
by that time they would have sorted out the firmware issues
thanks !!!
You won't regret the Lumia purchase. Had mine 10 days now, and it's gorgeous - aesthetically and as an OS.

If you are waiting for 2 months, then maybe you will have more devices on offer. Hopefully a Lumia 900?

The scope for customisation is far less than that of Android. Overall WP7 is fluid and stable but I have one app that annoyingly hangs my phone (Own this world) so it isn't true to say it is 100% hang free.
There still remain many "obvious" features missing, eg no draft text messages, no "real" 3rd party multitasking (ie apps are suspended whilst in the background).
Unless there are specific apps (locked to a particular OS) that are must haves, then I would say give WP a try.
As the guys in previous posts have told you - it's potential for modding and 3rd party apps is quite limited so far, but being a former symbian - windows mobile - android user, I gotta admit that I've gotten used to WP7 so much that I honestly can't see myself going back to an android or such. It annoyed the hell out of me for the 2 first weeks of ownership (HTC Mozart 7 is the device in question) because of some ridiculous limitations imposed on a "smartphone", but after the tedious task of reading a large amount of info, then finally updateing/unlocking my phone, I simply love it It's so smooth, and practical like you wouldn't believe, true it does have it's quirks and such, but it's a great device to use, nonetheless

Can my questions be answered???

Hi everyone, i have a couple of questions, now im in no way a troll or anything but i was thinking to switchin to wp, im with android at the moment i have a galaxy note.
Basically i just wanted to know what does wp 7.8 or even the upcoming wp8 devices have thats different to say an android or ios phone? I have no experience whatsoever with wp and would just like to know why you as users love your devices, ive seen the videos of the nokia 920 on youtube and it looks absolutely amazing, the reason i would like to switch is probably the fluidity of the os but other than that is there much else a reason to swap, even if someone could post a link as to reasons why wp is a good os that would be great, once again im not a troll i just have no clue about the operating system at all, i was curious about broadening my horizons abit many thanks if anyone can enlighten me

Obvious troll is obvious.
And three question marks is rude.
I just said i werent trolling are u stupid???
Its people like u who make xda such a nasty place to be in, i had a genuine question cos i was seriously thinkin bout switchin from android to wp, so i say to u to stop being so paranoid bout trolling when someone asks a genuine question oh and stop spamming my post with useless comments, if u thought i was a troll then why bother using ur energy and time to post in the thread, ur the troll causing needless arguements

Your question would be better asked in the WP8 forum. No need to beat this horse.
You watched the videos , you should have a pretty good understanding of the OS. What you see is exactly all there is to it, nothing more.

The reason why i love my Windows Phone is the design, the minimalistic design which is "modern" since 1950 till today that style is modern like black and white clothes. the second thing is that i dont need so much apps for every possible thing. i dont need to know how my wp7 works to manage it to work for months.
3rd what i love is the durability, i switch my wp7 only off if i have a new rom (that happens maybe once a year ). In wp7 you dont need to feel that your device uses you, you have the full control over the functions what your device can do for you. you dont need to bother if the device is gonna shut off at any time, no bother about slowdowns or maybe even forcing to restart like i saw multiple times on my brothers stock HTC evo 3D.
and the 4th are the live tiles, you spend way less time customizing and arranging your live tiles then on android the look and feel.
5th. my battery last now in my device over one day and 10 hours, and my battery is 1 year and 3 months old. and only 1500mAh! the lumia 920 has 2000mAh, just imagine what can be done with it. and how long it lasts.
6st. wireless sync with my pc, all my videos and pictures get synced automatic if my device is charging anywhere in my house.
7th. the people hub, there i have all the news from twitter, facebook, windows live, and linked in in one "app" that doesnt have a loading, if you have internet it download instantly the news if you switch to the "news" tab in the people hub.
8th. i love the overall simplicity of wp7, no bunch of setting for each app, instead microsoft has found the middle way, settings for all apps together. and i think it is a good way despite users say "i need a seperate volume ringtone and seperate volum for sms" you use your device or you dont use it you have volume turned on or off. thats what i need, nothing in between.
9th. i love the bunch of new developers with new app and functions like the official FC Bayern football app, if i'm not at home it send me an instant notification about goals, and the result is on the live tile, it is visible even without opening the app, thats only one example of apps that i like (instant news and info without opening app) - so to say "on the go"
10th. a wp7 has not every of my friends. i dont like mainstream to much.
11th. reason why i love windows phone 7 or 8 or 7.8 is that making apps for them is really easy (i heard from various developers that developing for iOS is a pain in the ass), with a few books and tutorials and some practice everybody can make an app, as an student you get an free dev center account where you can publish your apps and even earn money on them.
12th. reason is i'am 24h online, so i get emails instantly, news about my buddys... my brohter turn its wifi off on its Android HTC EVO 3D because he says it drains its battery... i dont like that. if it is a smartphone let it be a smartphone 24h not only 2h daily.
and WP7 is truly a smartphone, it makes my life easier, much.

1. The main strength is its UI. Even after almost two years of ownership, I still get amazed watching smooth animations on my phone. It simply never ages, never slows down. Even typing on its keyboard feels quite amazing.
2. Second biggest strength is its exclusive apps. For example, Nokia Drive served me many times and quite beautifully. Nokia Group Shots is extremely handy and blows my friends away. Photosynth is just mindblowing (now available on iOS as well)! MS Office is quite useful. My phone quite easily connects to all kinds of WiFi networks with proxy settings, no hassles at all! Xbox avatar (see my xda avatar) is just so cute and achievements add a new dimension to games.
In a small summary, it's some small things which can't be mentioned on specs sheet which makes WP7 truly amazing. It is so wonderful that I can't even care if my phone is not getting WP8 upgrade. I'm actually far more looking for a slew of new Nokia apps like Xpress browser which has saved me 84% data so far
