About to buy a used one. What to check ? - G Tablet General

Hi,
After some research I decided to buy gtablet. It will be my first android so I don't know much about it. (I'm aware that I need to learn about rooting etc after purchasing)
In about an hour, I will be buying one and I'm several thousands away from home so I have to check it well before buying.
What should I check other than the obvious tests ?
Is there any software that checks internal components ?
Or any program suggestions to run ? (For example if skype is installed I can test wi-fi, speakers and microphone at the same time).
thanks alot.
best.

honestly...i was about to buy a used one too last week...and then the price of a new one just keeps dropping and making it not worth it to buy it used...unless you are getting some kind of amazing deal. (like less than 200 dollars)
woot just had it for 255.. tigerdirect had them for 260 recently... i think the peace of mind is worth it for the extra 50 bucks...but i dont know your income ..

I second that. If its under 200 or comes with sweet accessories buy used. If not, save and buy new.
Make sure it has had a screen protector on the the whole time and that the power plug and audio plug work. Biggest issues so far have been broken power ports and headphone jacks.
As far as rooting goes, you don't really need to. All the roms here are stock rooted and if you follow the update.zip method of installing a rom or clockwork mod from stock you will be fine. Oh, and make sure you check what bootloader you are on before flashing a rom. Just read and read some more, tons of us are here to help when you got questions

Thanks for the replies, I agree your comments.
In my case the machine was not used and with a warranty so I purchased it.

im done with PDA's

Had enough,
sure i shall miss the stuff you can do but tbh for me most avg phones are closing in fast,on ability and im sick to death of crashes, bugs, reinstall's
it jusy aint worth the headache,im off to find a decent Phone
well the more normal "smart" phones catch up
the more advanced their software will be and
the more issues they will get
:s
we're doomed if we do and doomed if we dont
yer your right just phone and msn n email will do me these days
If I would put the energy that I put into my PDA (to get it work properly to keep in touch with my mates), into the relationsships with my friends, they would like me more than now... Most of them don't care if I call then via VoIP or Skype if at least I DO call...
I had a few of things that bugged me about having a PDA ,but i compromised them in the belief that ,they it will be far more worthwhile to have one and live with the issues
but the faults list grows and the good point just arent enough
TBH I don't know what the fuss is about. I have an XDA mini which is fabulous. Never crashed in 6 months and I'm running Tom Tom aswell. The only problem is that it's not working properly now, but that's since it got soaked in my pocket riding from Newcastle to Edinburgh on the bike in the rain. It's still going and it handles everything I do and more without question. I'm sticking with my PDA phone to save me carrying two things around with me (I need all the stuff when I'm running a business).
I have had my last 3 HTC devices from a friend who has bought them, had problems, and bought the next one that comes along thinking things will get better.
I never have these unreliability issues he always has, and they are the exact same devices he has had.
I put it down to the type of person, and knowledge of the device.
Sure, you shouldn't need to be a technical person just to use a PDA, but it obviously makes a difference.
Maybe you just need to stick to a Palm or Blackberry
Jace - I'm interested to know which device you used.
I used the xda2s and the xda exec and got really fed up with both.
I'm not remotely technical and just wanted a good phone that does email and few other bits when needed.
Got the xda mini in July this year and have never looked back. It is a pure phone that does the few extra things I need without issue.
If possible I suggest you try it as you may be surprisingly pleased with it.

In a way, I could understand where the original poster is coming from. But don't get me wrong I love windows mobile devices, but if your like most people, we just want things to work. So when things don't work, your either the type that'll find ways to make it work, or the type that'll just find another device. We have to be honest, those of us that come in and out of these forums on a daily basis with hacks and solutions and those of us looking for hacks and solutions for our windows powered devices are among the few that'll actually take the time out to do so. If you think about it, It can literally take up to 3 months are more to actually get the device operating exactly the way you wanted it. Mabey that's just a little too long for the average person.
I too have felt like the OP, contemplating over and over again, after the countless amount of resets, whether or not I should just go get a fancy nokia n series or something, but I have grown found of my wizard, and its kinda of fun hacking away at its OS to see it become highly operational, kinda like the way M$ should of made it out the box. Just my two cents.
Here is a story about a friend of mine (no point posting my opinion as part of the reason I love my Jamin is the fact that I can tweak it and make little apps for it - so I don't care even if it does require reset on occasion).
Any way this friend has a company phone (a simple Nokia) and he gets a lot of calls on it (part of the job). Trouble is this phone doesn't have BT so my friend complained that at the end of the day his ear heart.
The thing is, this particular friend always told me that Phone edition Pocket PC devices are too unstable, too big and generally useless as phones.
One they he got a MIO a701. At first he told me he was just using it for the BT so he can speak through the hands-free.
Now he just won't give it up. Even when his headset broke he still refused to go back to the regular phone.
Once while on a lunch break 2 minutes walk outside the office, he wanted to log in to his account on our server but for some reason the device couldn't connect (faulty GPRS settings). He begged me to use my Jamin.
I wouldn't let him, arguing that his work station was just an elevator ride away.
Eventually he broke, and admitted that he just couldn't give up the convenience.

I have owned a MDA Compact, which was ok but when i up dated the ROM from the TMobile site it fried the unit,
I then got an Exec,i have found that ok for my needs,(being phone, email, msn, web browsing)
but i agree with the above comments for some one not so minded tech wise, then maybe an incorrect choice of device for me
Basically an out the box unit ,is ok,just ok
but to make it decent takes some effort to get the best from the device
Ok they cant make the device suit everyone out the box,i undertsand that
however freezing up and soft resets a plenty, they are just too unstable for me
beofre my job required me to be away for long periods and the Exec fitted my needs ,now i think ill just be happy with less abilitys and more stability
The smartphones and nokias are gaining ground fast, for my needs maye they are better
The upside for me is the way you can alter and personalise the devices
but to be used day in day out as also my main phone there are far to unstable
In my case i had a compact which went tits up after a simple ROM update,
then an Exec which would freeeze and be a bit moody but then when the shutdown.battery problem started ouccruing(got new battery now)i just said to myself
you know what aint worth the hassle
dodgy pics a cheap nokia can match and beng a brick etc etc
maybe id be more suited to a smartphone or just a humble phone but me and HTC Pda just dont work out
I suppose at this point in timei dont have the time to mess around too much with the units
So my ideal maybe my Exec for away from home times and other certain situs but day to day maybe a an all singing all dancing mobile

You hit the nail on the head. You find it fun, and actually know how to get into the OS and mess around with it. There are plenty out there like me who haven't the faintest clue. We want our xda's to work out the box, and thats all. We come on this forum to 'take' information: get interesting apps, ask silly questions etc. I've very rarely ever actually contributed as such.
And then, when something doesn't work, we either continue to bang our heads against a wall trying to get a fix (from you guys, not from ourselves), or we move on.
Getting my xda mini s was my last attempt, and I am glad to say that it has never crashed; is never slow on answering a call; does not look like it belongs in a laptop case; and email works perfectly. The only thing I would like would be a today screen like I see so many screen shots of on here, but I haven't a clue and it would probably slow the thing down anyway
These devices are so young anyway it's no surprise they have problems. Can't wait to see what's gonna be around in 5 years time.....
good point mate
ive just read the hermes prob thread & ive had the exec battery problem
nothing is flawless in life, but it dont help that they release these products with faults
your mayor phone makers dont release units with big issues
i think id seen the light when having the exec battery problem came along and while a new battery arrived,i used a nokia 3250 it was such a nice change to have a device that preformed its functions
i just think we accpet a lot in PDA's that maybe we wouldnt put up with in a PC,Car or phone
we think its a trade of for there many functions for some problems but were do you draw the line
how many soft resets do we do?freezes?
anyone reading this do you feel ive just picked the wrong devices?,if so what do you think may have been with hindsight a better option?

next device?

I am looking to get a new device. I am a low end buyer because i have little to no money. I bought a HTC Feeler device 2 years ago(SP3i) and it is still lasting me "ok" but I have finally saved up enough to buy a cheap PDA Phone to replace this smartphone. I flashed the Feeler with wm6 and now i would like the same OS on any new phone i get(OEM or not does not matter).
I was leaning toward a Siemens SX66, but I can not find any NEW ones for sale. I like this PDA because it has a QWERTY keyboard and because it is fast. I dont like that it only has wireless B(i want the WIFI edition not camera). I dont care about the phone being big as long as it is still manageable and i dont care about a camera.I also prefer the phone to be larger than it to be puny like the AT&T 8125(feature full but ugly and tiny).
What i was wondering was if some helpfull people from this forum(which i have looked at for 2 years but never posted on) could help me decide on a new device and point me to some good deals. I will be really grateful to get something up to $225. Beyond that is out of my reach.
Thank all of you in advance... I know that this is the proper place to ask.

i want to sell my hermes

hello everyone...
after 12 months of using my T-Mobile MDA Vario II (hermes) i got an offer for the new kaiser.
as i don't have any other use for my phone i want to give it to someone else. sure, i could keep it, but the only effect would be a change of the color because of the heavy dust-layer covering it after a few months
i thought about selling it on ebay, but as this forum helped me so much, and i just like this community, i wanted to know if anyone is interested in it here.
you know all those technical things about this phone, so i will just describe the differences.
currently a cooked rom from shaps is running on my phone, but i don't remember which release beceause after flashing shaps it just worked so fine for me, i never thought about flashing again
i also flashed the spl&ipl and the radio several times, so i just don't know about their versions either.
uhm... yes. it has some major scratches and damages all over it, so it doesn't look so good anymore, i would like to post some pictures here, but at the moment i can't find my camera i hope i can upload some photos after weekend, so you can see those "injuries".
but nothing is broken, just scratches and a bit of the color on the top buttons (messagin & web'n'walk) is mmissing.
i'll just post the pics in a few days.
technically the phone is absolutely intact. no scratches on the display, all pixels on the display are working, and all buttons too.
the charger is working, the charging port is working.
one other thing to mention is the headset, because i modified it so i can plug in any earphones i like to. so its basically the same headset, but instead of the hard-wired earphones a 3,5mm audioplug is coming out of the microphone-volume_adjustment-headset-box...
uhm...
what else to say... if anyone would like to have it, i would send it with all the stuff i got from tmobile, so i will ship it with the original packagin and everything that was inside.
some other important thing: i live in germany, but can ship everywhere, we just have to talk about postage.
so, that's it.
i would prefer if you would send me a mail, but pms and thread responses are also good
i hope i can give it away here, cause i really liked this phone and don't want to give to just "anyone" on ebay...
greetings
garfield

Opinions; opinions...help me choose my next phone

Major Question Update:
So rather then start yet another "what phone should I get thread", I decided to just update this one with my new question.
It's down to just three options. The Fuze. The Touch HD. Or wait till the next round of phones.
I prefer the touch hd compared to the fuze. But I have a really hard time justifying a $700+ phone that I can't use to it's full potential (no 3G )
So; how long do I have to wait for the new round of phones? It's already almost February...am I looking at Q2...Q3...2010? I really can't wait much longer; carrying two phones is really starting to get on my nerves.
Old stuff below:
Horray for tax season! This is the last year I will likely see a tax refund (new job, new tax bracket...)so I plan on spending it wisely. And by wisely; I mean buying the coolest mfking phone available! Only problem is; I have no idea what that phone might be.
Here's my requirements...
Needs to work on AT&T in the US. It's not that I love the carrier; it's just that my new company provides me with a number there which has unlimited data/minutes/text. Kinda hard to justify paying for more service...
Would prefer to avoid a slide out keyboard. I don't mind on-screen keyboards if they are large enough to actually use.
If I'm going to use a stylus; there must be a "dock" for it. The Fuze is out because of this. ((Why in the world would they think I would want my stylus hanging off the side of my darn phone???))
MicroSD card must be accessible without totally restarting my phone. I don't mind TOO much if the port for it is under the battery cover; but for the love of god don't put it under the darn battery! ((I'm looking at you BB Curve which I hate...))
Standard headphone jack would be swell. I have yet to find a stereo bluetooth headset that I like; so for now I'm stuck using the wired kind. And MicroUSB->3.5mm are ugly; and like to slip out alot.
GPS, but that should really be just about standard now; right?
Far prefer WinMo to anything else I've used; but I'm not opposed to using android if I can make it work.

So...any ideas?
x1 fit the bill
not android though
Or wait a few months and the new HTC 09 models will start to come out!
here's a few ideas in a recent thread discussion: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=474933
Sry; totally wrong button. Mod can delete this one if you notice.

Returning Old Tablet?

Finally I have my replacement, but they have sent me another box aswell with cellotape and stuff to return the old one back in??
Anyone else had this?
Yes, I got the same. My old tab is packed up and ready to go... I just hate letting go from my hands. I was thinking to keep it for parts, but realistically there is no need to do so and it is really just clutter.
Sent back in time via Android 9.0 TimeText feature.
Yeah, I was going to keep it as it remove the OTA kill switch folder and has been fine.
I got an Identical package as you it seems, assuming your in the UK since the sipping address is going to liverpool, I cant see Nvidia coming knocking at your door looking for the old one back. I mean if its possible to with out getting in any trouble I'd love to keep my old one, and just be careful with the dodgy battery. Does any one know how many of the apparent 88k tablets actually have blown up/caught fire?
yeah im in the uk, i think i'll get keep both for awhile and see how it goes lol dont know how long that tracking info will last either
Had a similar white paper sent to me with my replacement tablet as well (Norway) although I'm not sure if they had the part where it says "read included info to return tablet".
As far as I know the new tablet you got is a freebie (pretty much) and nVidia is probably just forced by legal obligations to send out these messages to certain countries in order to avoid themselves being liable for any further use of a faulty device.
Also I've had no problem running my old tablet with a faulty battery, it runs just as warm as my new replacement one - although bear in mind I use neither for heavy computing/graphics so they don't experience much load.
