hey guys how are you all? okay, so i need some help, im a complete noob when it comes to android and the process of rooting?:/ ive had iphones since the 3g all the way through to the i4 and ive not had any problems learning about jailbreaking or how its done and infact jailbroke all of my iphones, but long story short i just got the optimus 3d today..or yesterday now should i say..i think ive figured out android to a certain degree, some things are still a mystery to me though, such as how i back up my contacts to my pc and how i get the first (far left) page to actually be the first page instead of it always returning to the middle page and havin to scroll either way?!? but thats for a different post, my question here is howdo i root my optimus 3d? i have an acer laptop running windows ultimate x64 if thats important, the o3d is on tmobile uk although i believe its unlocked(theres no tmobile branding or custom tmobile firmware to my knowledge), its running android 2.2 froyo, version 10b-jun-16-2011. a simple quick walkthrough of all the programs needed and the method to root it is what im after,id so very much appreciate it,thank you in advance. Hi Rob, firstly welcome to Android, be patient, root will arrive shortly.
However, unless you need to do some SERIOUS hacking you probably do not need root to do stuff in Android you needed to jailbreak the iPhone for. ie, just put mp3 files on you device's mSD card and they will play, same with videos, same with games. You don't need to bypass the market (as in itunes) you just need to alter you settings to accept none market stuff. A couple of clicks and your done!

thanks for the welcome. so this might be another stupid question, but what is the 'root'? what does rooting actually do and is it a necessary requirement, i wont be using any custom software or writing any of my own programs, im happy with the way it is id just like to get the odd paid app for free from time to time unless theres a reason to root to get free apps or whatever(i dont always pirate i usually stick with free apps unless theres a major diff between the paid and free versions, for example just this afternoon i paid for perfectlockapp from the marketplace). also off topic but the phone has 8gb internal sd, around 900mb internal memory and ive got an 8gb external sd card. all the apps ive installed were saved onto the internal memory but i figured out how to transfer them to internal sd,but the internal sd has a capacity of only 5.93gb useable.how do i get the apps to goto onto the external sd card or cant i do this?if i cant, what is the external card for? cheers guys.rob

turn debugging on and connect your phone try it
Need extra info
I to am trying to root a P920, I've been reading through this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
and it talks constantly about putting the phone in debug mode.
How do I do that?
Second I'm supposed to get the right drivers for the phone, but I don't understand where.
I have the android SDK installed with all the optional bits and Eclipse integration. I've also just downloaded super one click from the other thread.
Thanks
you find the drivers in LGE folder in the internal memory of your 3D phone or search for this LGUnitedMobileDriver_S498MA22_WHQL_ML_Ver_2.2.exe
for debug mode--->settings-application-developer-debug
Nic you're a star. I just figured out the debugging thing, so was on my way back to post that I found it, but had no clue about the drivers
Cheers
Ian
Right, I seem to have rooted my phone
Here is some additional information in case it helps.
Previously I downloaded the Android SDK and Eclipse plug in. The eclipse plug in isn't required for this, the details are above.
I put it in debug mode as detailed above.
I downloaded the file SuperOneClickv1.9.5-ShortFuse.zip from the link in my post above.
Now here's the useful bit. I couldn't get my PC to recognise my phone, it complained it couldn't load the drivers. So I went to:
edit: ok I can't post external links yet, on lg.com there's a mobile support section and a support tool.
and downloaded the support tool. This allowed me to download and install the LG P920 drivers. Once this was done I reconnected my phone to the PC and ran SuperOneClick.exe then clicked on Root.
The dos box flashed up about a dozen times, and I was about to disable debug when it said "Success!"
I'm new to all of this so sorry for being a noob.
Once I root the phone. Does this automatically imply I also unlocked it? If not how do you unlock the phone? I know there's some way to unlock them without needing to use unlock codes.
The carrier I want to use (MTS) is so puny they have a terrible phone selection. I'm thinking about rooting and having the LG Optimus 3D and rooting it. I had a friend who's done such to a HTC Desire, but it seems every phone is done very differently.
Edit: Okay, I I found the topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186406 about unlocking the phone which I think makes sense but it's still difficult to follow and it seems a handful of people are having issues with it.
I can't post on that topic as I'm too new. I'm looking forward to getting this phone, rooting, and doing that unlock though once I know for sure that I'll be able to do it.

just bought a t-mobile pulse today and was wondering if you you guys could help me with a couple of things.
i know that android can't run applications from the minisd card straight out the box. Could someone please list what needs to be done before the phone will do so. I know the phone will need rooting, does anyone know a simple rooting method for the pulse? and then what needs to be loaded to run applications from the sd card? Would anyone recommend doing these.
From what i've seen, this website seems a real community and this is one of the reasons i bought an android phone. Thank you for your time and help.
could someone help

just do it the same way, if you need adb drivers ect use the vista ones, worked with my hero
you know how to manually update drivers using device manager init? just do it that way but use the relevent vista drivers
ty will give it a go! what is the best keyboard to install on android phones
I just got my SNS yesterday and it's my first android phone (was previously using an LG cookie) First thing I did was try to root it, and I seemingly succeeded, or so I thought. It looks like it's rooted and the superuser apps there but I can't install apps using any of the guides I find or even update to 2.3.2 (keep getting and error 7 msg). When I try to install using APKInstaller it tells me it can't find the device, which I think is the problem.
I think the problem is that someway or another windows 7 64 bit stopped recognizing my phone as a Nexus S and now recognizes it as a portable device in device manager (There's also an Android Phone, with an Android Composite ADB interface) I used the SDK to install all the updates available including the google usb driver rev. 4. I tried updating the Portable device driver using the google usb driver but windows keeps it as a WPD Filesystem Volume Driver. Also I noticed when I checked to see if adb gave me a serial number for the phone using the cmd prompt commands in the rooting guides it comes up blank.
I used usbdeview to delete everything seemingly related to Android, but everytime I reconnect the phone it, installs the drivers for the portable device.
I need help to make windows recognize the phone as a nexus s again so I can update and install apps and games etc. If anybody out there can help i'll really appreciate it. Explain the steps to me as if you were talking to a child, leaving nothing out plz. Thanks for any assistance.
I live outside the US (no android market) and would hate to think I messed up and expense phone purchase in just one day
Not quite sure where to start. But my intuition tells me its the Windows 7 64-bit and drivers that's not playing along. You might want to google if other users are having trouble with W7 64-bit with Android drivers. Otherwise, find another computer and repeat the steps. If not, flash a custom ROM to see if that eliminates the problem. You haven't damaged your phone. Don't worry.
just install directly from android market website
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I assume you mean instal the update from the market (which I can't do because I don't have wifi)?
I managed to get the adb to list a device number after I installed java x32 & x64 bit. I still can't install apps or get the update to work, but I'll try unrooting and then rerooting my phone as see how that goes.
Oh, I haven't done the initial sign into gmail thing yet in case that makes any difference
Edit: god I feel stupid. I didn't realize that I had to upgrade from 2.3 to 2.3.1 and then to 2.3.2. I did that an everything upgrade without any problems. Now just got to figure out how to install apk's and I'm golden
Edit 2: Ok, I figured everything out and now i'm up to date with updates and I can install apps and games. Oh Happy Day Thx for all the help
Hey all heres the deal I've had my Atrix now since the end of Feb and since then have only recently successfully rooted and enabled non market apps on my Atrix (recently meaning this week lol). I'm new to developing and modifying phones but I'm not new to computers . I admittedly have mostly hardware experience and slight software background. With that said I need your help !!!! I'm interested in sideloading either Gingerblur or Greyblur to my phone . I am currently running XP Pro on my computer and so far as I know I have done all I can do on my own with no help. I have the drivers installed, Moto Link installed, phone set to debuging, SD card unmounted, and Greyblur downloaded & extracted onto phone's internal mem......... Now heres where ya'll expertize is needed . BTW I have the SDK installed ontomy computer as well but I'm not familiar with ADB or its commands . Any help, advice or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
To Root the LG Optimus 3D any firmware you will need
SuperOneClick , winRaR to extract the file , also you may need google ADB drivers if your on windows xp
Step 1: Download SuperOneClick here http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IKMS0QN3 then extract it.
Step 2: On the phone goto settings > Applications > Development > Turn USB Debugging on also turn on unknown sources.
Step 3: connect the phone to your pc make sure mass storage is turned off once connected wait for the drivers to install
Step 4: Run SuperOneClick as admin right click superoneclick run as administrator and click on Root, sometimes it can take a few minutes once it's done restart the phone now you should have superuser app on the phone.
To play Tegra Games you need to Root your phone first
Download this https://market.android.com/details?id=eu.chainfire.cf3d&feature=search_result
once you have installed chainfire goto chainfire it will ask for root permission press allow
Then install CF3D Driver phone will restart once done
now download this http://www.megaupload.com/?d=G2AXTW04
this is the nvidia plug in put it in your sd card anywhere
now open up chainfire then install plugins then select nvidia zip
next gotodefault openGL settings > use plugin select nvidia
go back and select fix market settings
Your done you should be able to play tegra games now
I'm not responsable of any damage to your device
Might be a good place to share what Tegra games are confirmed working.
I've tried Pinball and Bang Bang Racing. Pinball as smooth as a greased eel. With Bang Bang I got an error message telling me my phone didn't meet the minimum requirements. I know there are a few tweaks you can do with Chainfire so I'm wondering if there is a specific setting that might get this running?
Share the love folks.
I tested Samurai II, Pinball, Galaxy On Fire and Guerilla Bob, they all work fine after a very short freeze at the startup. After the startup, they all do great.
THX!! all games works fine for me too.
some tegra games are very slow
on my device some game is very slow, like galaxy on fire and others. for example samurai ii run very nice but there are any other games very very slow. i don't have installed performance pack yet. can depend from this?
have you any suggestion please help me

Go to LG website for your regional. Downloading the LG Update tool. Installing it and run, you will find the USB driver button. Downloading the driver and plugin your O3D for complete driver installation. Then try super1click v1.9.5 again. All would be fine.
Hope this help.

Argh! I'm thwarted before even reaching step #1!
Seriously though, thanks for the nice write up: I'm sure it will help lots of noobs like me, and help keep this board clear of clutter (1,000 "how do i root" threads)
And equally seriously, I'm thwarted!... for tonight anyway. I don't have access to a windows computer, just my Mac. I'll be able to borrow one tomorrow but I just bought a thrill this evening and I'm hoping to start setting it up tonight, but I need root!
Do you or anyone else on this thread know if the windows software can be substitutd for anything else, or know of any alternate method to obtain root? Is it plausible that perhaps gingerbreak (I know the optimus 3D/thrill is running froyo, but the gingerbreak author said that it's plausible that other versions may work too), and maybe some terminal emulator voodoo could do the trick, like I've seen on other devices?
Thanks! Sorry if this should just be a thread of its own in the general section or something, I don't mean to derail.
EDIT: AN EASY WAY TO ROOT ON MAC/LINUX:
1. On this thread, download the zip at the bottom of the post and download the .zip file. Thanks to jnichols959
2. Follow his (jnichols959) directions:
1.enable USB debugging on your phone (Settings -> Applications -> Development)
2.connect your phone via USB. no drivers or android sdk needed.
3.double-click root.command (Mac) or run it as you would any shell script (Linux)
4.wait for the script to finish and your phone to reboot

He said you don't need ADB, so that's probably true for Thrill 4g / optimus 3d too, but I DO have ADB on my computer and it just worked for me, so if you don't have it and it doesn't work, maybe download the android sdk... don't see why it would hurt, at least.
OP: Hey sorry again dude, I should have just made a separate thread. Feel free to include any of this info in your first post, if you want.
i'm on my second 3d, i bricked the frst one, and this process worked the first time but now chainfire3d cant find the plugin on my sd card. I've tried the internal sd card, external and put copies of it in every folder but for some reason it wont find it. Any ideas?
Can I use your links in LG thrill thread bud? Thanks me know!

how are you turning on usb debugging? I also have this tablet(purchased on black Friday from Walmart like everyone else) and mine doesn't seem to have that option anywhere. in fact, compared to the previous two android products I have, this device seems to lack ALOT of available functions. though I am capable of navigating a recovery menu at boot. but that doesn't do me any good for using pdanet. that seems to be my biggest road block. pdanet wont install because the onl;y way I can allow my device to connect to my pc with adp is using the adp updater in the recovery boot menu.

Glad I could help a few. Now, someone get on a functional recovery ;p
I have poked around a little at the stock recovery, backing it up, etc.. But am not brave enough to try and get CWM working on it.
I was able to use th Xposed framework for a few mod's no problem. Battery mod, reboot menu, hide navbar, etc.. But Xposed can only do so much.
Edit: I heard on reddit this tool also works for rooting. I have not tested it (already rooted with the other method).

---------- Post added at 09:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:15 PM ----------
1: Install drivers. Seeing as RCA does not provide drivers, we had to find some that work. That's where PDANET comes in. Their drivers support a very wide range of Android devices. We are not installing it to tether. We just want the drivers it provides. So download PDANET, install, let it detect your device, install the drivers, and then afterwords you can uninstall it.
2: Enable Developer Options. Settings>About tablet> Tap Build Number a bunch of times till it's enabled.
3: Enable USB Debugging. Options>Developer Options>Click On (up top)>Then checkmark USB Debugging
That should clear up some of the confusion in this thread. How you root after step 3 is up to you. Personally, I did it with Kango. Which was straight forward. Connect device, hit a button, Say yes to a couple questions, reboot, presto done.

Thanks, that sorted things out.
To make clear, and aid in any other inquiries, I managed to find an ADP connection mode, among other android update features. with the device off, hold volume up while turning the device on. it should boot to an image of an android with an open chest panel and the words, "no command". if you push volume up again it will provide you with options and instructions on how to execute. you can manual update the device with an SDK through USB ADP mode this way. I'm not sure if that makes anything simpler or generates a work around but I hope it helps with future development for this device.
Well got root now we need a recovery...
For some reason when trying to make sure I can send adb commands to my tablet, I am showing no devices connected. I check in device manager and it shows up as Android ADB interface for the tablet. These drivers were installed with the latest version of PDANet. Thoughts or how were you all able to get the drivers fully loaded and working? I have developer options already enabled and USB debugging mode is checked.
Info: RCA RCT6378W2 Tablet
Android 4.2.2
Kernal 3.0.36+
PDANet+ 4.12
Windows 7 64 Bit (I also tried it on my windows 7 32 bit computer)

You need to create "adb_usb.ini" in "Users>Username>.android".
Inside "adb_usb.ini" insert "0x2207" and save.

I had this problem too. make sure you're using the most recent version of pdanet. for whatever reason the older version just hang there and dont work right.
Installed the latest pdanet. It wont install the driver. I checked the device manager and it still shows the device without the driver. not sure what else to try..
