[Q] ROM upgrade settings recovery (HTC Desire, GingerBurst ROM) - General Questions and Answers

Hi all. Apparently I'm not allowed to post this in the HTC Desire forum in the relevant thread as I'm new.
I installed from this thread: "[ROM] GingerBurst [Sense 2.1] 27/Jun | Stable Data2SD | Unlimited memory" on my HTC Desire. (Works perfectly, rather pleased as it's my first try. Now got lots of "internal" storage.)
Line one of the instructions reads:
"Wipe data/Factory reset from Recovery (CWM/Ra)" which I did.
Can I restore any part of the backup I made in ClockworkMod Recovery? Ideally I want my WiFi settings and the settings for a couple of more complicated apps restored. It would also be nice to get all my previously installed apps back too.
Advance Restore gives me a choice of boot, system, data, cache and sd-ext.
Is it possible? I'm guessing I don't have the right sort of backup. Is it a bad idea to try it, starting with "data"?
Thanks.

I answered my own question. Best thing to do was restore the vanilla state of my phone with ClockworkMod's "restore backup". Boot the phone, installed Titanium from the market. Took a backup of everything with that. (On the schedule tab you can make it backup system+apps all in one go) and then start again with the new ROM installation. When done I was easily able to restore just the bits I wanted with Titanium. Very neat. This is probably incredibly obvious stuff but I hope it helps another noob like me.

I have some questions regarding the upgrade from supernova to gingerburst!
Since I am not able to post on the main Gingerburst site, I have to ask here!
Do I need to do the upgrade from Supernova to Gingerbread like a new fresh install or just flash the rom and then flash da2sd reinstaller immediately?
Currently using Supernova 1.0.2.8 (It actually works without flaw and much faster than 1.0.2.6 for me) S-on. Hope to see someone help me answer my querry!
Thank you in advance!
xD

I think you still have to do wipe/factory reset. Use Titanium to backup your apps and settings and it's pretty painless to restore them. You're still upgrading from one to the other so I think you don't do the reboot. Flash the rom and then flash da2sd reinstaller immediately. That's how I understand it.

Thx, will try that out!
One more thing, any chance of getting the new sense 3.0 into gingerburst to replace sense 2.1?

I was wondering if this rom is still not listed on the UOT kitchen?
Wish to make some personal modification!
xD

Big change from supernova to gingerburst
They are having quite a different structure so I guess I'll have no choice but to do a fresh install of rom.
Also, they have changed the bootanimation location to data/local and adding downanimation!
Damn, a change from supernova to gingerburst, have to remake my bootanimation and customize a whole new downanimation!
xD

The ROM thread we're talking about is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1143456
Just realised I can hyperlink, go me!

"VPN Support (tun.ko) (Optional. Can activate by script)"
What does "activate by script" mean? I'm hoping to get OpenVPN working, which needs a tun device. As far as I can tell, OpenVPN installer is already doing "modprobe tun" - what else do I need to do?

Bios Boot & Down animation made exclusively for gingerburst rom
Finally done with making the bootanimation and downanimation!
Sharing it to all of you, if you are interested, just download and put them in data/local and enjoy the animation!
Update: Currently, I am preparing the gif preview but the downloads for bootanimation and downanimation are now up and ready to be push! I have personally tested both animation and they are working flawlessly!
Try it!
xD

Anyone knows what are the things available to mod in UOT kitchen?
Are they still the same as before for Supernova which I got a feeling it is not the same again so can anyone give me some inkling on what are the can and cannot be modded in UOT for Gingerburst!
Thx!
xD

Finally got the bootanimation and downanimation done!
I mean really done, they are all set to push into data/local!!
xD

Cool
I was wondering the same thing (albeit on a different ROM / base) ... not sure why I haven't been using the Titanium backup to restore since I bought the thing a while ago - it's just so easy with CMW I missed the obvious. Was tired of spending an hour restoring apps and settings, especially multiple email accounts and messages.
- 10 DKP for me.
thanks for the reminder!

mcforwin, that's a nice boot animation, you should make a thread for it where people will find it.

gqneon: Nice to know someone benefited from my rambling.

Howdo, my first ROM release and it's basically a port of Drizzy's excellent superlight hero rom with a little light themeing from the smartphone france ROM.
Superlight Hero v3 (updated to v3)
All props should go to Dizzy and whoever made the graphics for the launcher 'handle', I just put the two together and converted it to run on the Sapphire.
Drizzy's Dream ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=546984
Smartphone france ROM (nicked some graphics from here)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532902
With this rom you get all the good stuff of the Hero ROMs (except Rosie) including exchange integration, facebook / twitter integration, nice looking messaging / mail apps etc etc, with a nice dark launcher tab.
Here's the steps I took to make this ROM (incase other newb rom cookers want some tips:
Code:
Download smartphone france rom
extract /system/app/Launcher.apk from smartphone france rom
extract /res/drawable_port and /res/drawable_land folders from the launcher.apk we just got and save them somewhere.
Download Drizzy Rom
extract it
open /data/app_s/Launcher.apk
insert the /res/drawable_land & /res/drawable_port we saved earlier, overwriting the ones in the current Launcher.apk
zip up the Drizzy ROM again
run the rom through my handy 'dream->sapphire' conversion script from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547260
And that's it.
As with Drizzy's rom you'll have to partition your SD card, see his thread for details.
32A or 32B mate?
Also I'm assuming we should partition our sd card for this as it says you should on Drizzys page?
This is for 32A or 32B devices, every new rom's should have a description about this...
Thanks for your work!
sorry, it's 32b...OP updated.
Ok I'll give it a whirl, should we have the 3 partitions on our sd cards?

I don't have an access point to connect to, but wifi switches on, I can detect access points (all secured unfortunately) and I can switch it off without the 'stalling' thing I've seen on some roms.
Wifi works great, runs pretty smooth, looks good. Thanks

Installed it this morning, works great, looks even better. I've been following this closely and I can say that this is GREATLY appreciated! Kudos gents!
much better than the other battery status mod, this has increments of 1 instead of 20 +1
Thanks for this, works wonderful
Sent from my Incredible!
Working great, thanks!
to the people who have it running fine, what did you do prior to it?
can you confirm that this works on skyraider 2.0.1a it looks like you are running it.
Yes it works for me on 2.0.1
Thanks I also just installed it, works great..
This requires a deodexed rom, so this will not work on the first leaked 2.2 correct? Only working for skyraider currently?
The 8/1 leak is a deodexed Rom if not u have a stock 2.2 I can upload

Hmm interesting, well im doing a backup right now. I think I'm going to go ahead and install sky raider instead. See what all this hype is about. Thanks though
Pmf v2.1 is currently deodexed yet it isnt working for me
HTC Incredible, rooted w/ stock Sense 2.1
For those of you who have gotten this working....
What am i missing here guys. I have taken a fresh install of Skyraider 2.0.1 (as in flashed... rebooted once..... haven't even put my contacts back !!!) and then both through rom manager as well as the old fashioned way (power + volume down ) flashed this. Every single time i'm stuck in a boot loop.
I have also tried doing a factory reset after flashing skyraider before installing this as well as not doing a factory reset. Nothing seems to change the results.
As suggestions.
Note: just because i'm stubborn too, i did this one last time last night before bed, and let the phone sit there all night. Guess what came back to the animation screen reloading over and over and over and over .... well you get the point. I would to use this, and am really confused why other people have no problem, and i can't get a thing to work. Especially with a fresh install i should have no issues at all.
I'm a little sad inside this morning.

[ROM][CDMA][14/02/2011] Pre-Rooted Stock 2.2 ROM for USCC Users RC3/FINAL

This is based on the new USCC RUU, 2.11.573.5. This is just a stock ROM which has been rooted and has the following:
- Deodexed (to allow theming)
- A2SD (512MB minimum EXT3 partition needed to work)
- Busybox
- Init.D support (for power saving mods)
- Apps ZIP alligned (Better RAM usage)
- 3 in 1 Reboot Power menu added (might not work so will need to let me know)
- uses updater-script (Edify) for those using newer recoveries
I've removed the normal Market/USCC apps to make this a stock Sense-based ROM
Other than that it's just a stock ROM.
I won't be keeping this up-to-date so bare this in mind. I live in the UK and use a GSM phone so I'm just making this to help out CDMA users which actually want Sense!
CDMA RC3/FINAL (inc Radio)
CDMA RC3/FINAL (no Radio)
If you're coming from a different ROM (or from stock) you'll need to do a FULL wipe before flashing. If coming from another custom ROM then do a nandroid before flashing this as it might not work properly due to not testing as I don't use a CDMA handset.
If you're coming from another build of this ROM I'd recommend a full wipe but you should be OK if you don't

I agree, just for the few of us not on US Cell. Maybe put them as a seperate d/l? I dunno, don't want to get too demanding as I'm just happy to have 2.2.
As I said, other than removing the apps I won't be listening to any more requests. I'll get it up as it is and then perhaps another build with the apps removed.
I'm not removing them as I don't know how written into the ROM they are. Once tested we'll go from there
still glad someone did this, put a donate link in the first post as I will donate as I'm sure others would do
Nah, it's OK - built the ROM in work so not even my own time!!
What I wouldn't mind, if it's working and all that, if someone can take some screen shots of it to go on the OP - Just need one of the Home screen and of the Software Information page
I'm also adding the radio to the ROM as obviously new FroYo radio will work better than older Eclair ones...
Yea I was going to ask about the radio, this is making my day
Sent from my HTC Desire CDMA using Tapatalk
I'll take screens if someone don't beat me to it, as I got another 8 hours of work to go.......till I get to my puter

This is awesome. I would say leave the USCC apps in there or move them to data as well. I will be looking forward to this and possibly themeing it or seeing what else can be done.
Jared
Just a quick question, and yes I've searched: How hard is it to add DSP Manager to a Sense rom? The only thing I truly hate about the Desire is the speaker and I've heard tweaking it can help. Thanks.
Thanks for your work. Does zipalign or deodexed save any space? Also, how is data2sd implemented? I am using my own custom version of this rom right now.
ROM is up, it's basic A2SD so an EXT3 partition needed - minimum 512MB
The radio is on here so once flashed and its rebooting do NOT interfere with it!!
If coming from another ROM, FULL wipe (data, cache, dalvik cache) required - do a nandroid before flashing to be safe as THIS IS A TEST BUILD AND I'VE NOT TESTED IT!!
Could you make one without a radio update? I am not sure if I want it.
Sent from my PB99400 using XDA App
You'll need it for FroYo, things like the 720p video won't work without it (if it's anything like the GSM phones)
If not I'll do another without it at some point
Question: I just went to a Gingerbread ROM a few weeks ago, Ultimate Droid3.0 RC. I've partitioned my 8 gb SD with a 1024mb partition already and moved apps over to it. I'm happy with this ROM, but I would like to see what this stock 2.2 has to offer. Obviously, I've backed up what I currently have before the re-flash, but I'm wondering how 2.2 will see my apps on my SD. Should I throw in another SD to test or should 2.2 recognize everything as-is?
Nicely done Eddy, ill give this a whirl at the weekend
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
This is for CDMA phones only - do NOT flash it if you have a GSM a phone!
Flashing now. Per my other post, I used another SD card to test with. Will find out the rest later. Update shortly.

Thank you! Is this multi-language (I assume so, being based on CM7, but need to be sure)? If so, I might be able to convince my wife to let me flash it on the blade...
sorry for my n00b question, but how do you find out your device is GEN2? I'm thinking of to pick one from my telco.
have a look on this page : http://android.modaco.com/category/488/zte-blade-roms-rom-customisation/
If you want to know if your blade is GEN1 or GEN2 there is an app on the android market called "Ask mr pig fish. Will tell you if you have GEN1 or 2. Hope this helps.
Nice ROM,good work!
Great job. I love this ROM,
BUT....
There is something that realy pisses me off. When I reboot the device it freazes at the screen with the green android. I have to remove the battery first to start the phone.
If you have a solution, please let me know.
P.S. The camera doesn't work. Freazes when I hit capture button and after that cannot even start the camera.
I'm testing a new Version now.. seems to be that this one will work much better... i will build the new Version on the Blade-Nightly-108 .. this Version runns very smooth and brings no Issues at the moment...
I have to make some Miui ROMS for MIUI Germany.. after this i will work on the new BLADE Version...

My camera works, but stil have a reboot problem, mentioned above.
Besides, there are still couple of issues:
- it can turn off while charging,
- the notification lingers after you've read new message or checked missed call
- battery draining is still an issue
Besides, it is one of the best ROM's I've used in a while. Cheers mate
hope I helped
P.S. Is there a mutual problem with ROM's regarding the dialer, which doesn't help you by bringing up names from the phonebook while you type the number? Besides the first ROM that came from Orange, which started phonebook search while you type the numbers, none of the unofficial ROM's had this function.

no just reboot
I've used it for two weeks and the last week I saw that the battery usage was less than with the firmware IRM-1670-0-4073-A02
Hi, thanks for this amazing Rom.... Just wondering.... Will there be an android 4 ..ICS OR JB releases for this phone by the developer of this Rom or by enox ...thanks
When its possible i´ll do it or i´ll try it.
But its just possible after unlocking the bootloader.
Yet, we´re just able to build ROMs based on stock firmwares.
Otherwise the phone wont boot.
So feed us with inspirations and we´ll improve our Relentless ROM
This rom have language romanian?
Yes. It includes the romanian language pack

I´m so sorry.
I´ve messed something up while i´ve added the ExtensionPack to the second post
So.. now its fixed.. thanks for reporting
Have fun with the ROM
you re rom work great thanks a lot... very strange things i have the startup sound ;p
Why i have always problem with blur.service after i install your ext. pack? Im using german .sbf, your Relentles rom and first ext. pack. Now i install updated ext. and shows me this error.
Edit: I solve this with.. flash your rom again, after that flash ext. pack and now works fine.
But why? I already have your rom with ext. pack.. thats strange.
this will not work on the canadian virgin mobile phone in canada with the newest firmware, untill a hack can be done on the phone to be able to let it be rooted.
