not obsessed with getting S-off - HTC Sensation

I know that is the minority opinion but I'm really happy with the device the way it is , sense 3.0,has its quirks but as long as they upgrade the software and make the device rock solid I really don't care if we get it or not ....now don't get me wrong if we do ill be a flashing fool ,but I'm really enjoying the device for what it is

Yes. Same here. I would definitely be a lot happier once it is s-off. But I am really happy I have this phone.

You're not alone. I'm very satisfied with this phone the way it is. If I could just uninstall a lot of useless apps without the need of rooting, then I wouldn't even bother with rooting it.

I'm also 100% satisfied with my device. I am also a crackflasher though LOL! Also I want all this bloatware off the phone and some custom kernel so we can get alot better battery life. Plus, I think a AOSP rom would make this phone blazingggggggg fast. I just like the oprtion to switch. With that being said I'm still obsessed with getting S off

I agree
I would like the next HTC update (slight speed up), but the default rom is pretty bug free and excellent for me!

Ahh. I hate sense and really miss my nexus ine vanilla. Its just so much smoother andbit was a slower phone with less ram. I love the sensation but it can get so much better that I can't wait for s off
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App

Agreed. Happy here.
Send from my awesome HTC Sensation + XDA Premium app.

The only reason I want s-off is so I can debrand, other than that Im more than happy with the phone and stock firmware

true, but..
WE NEED ROOT !
My amazing device is lacking a basic ability like taking a screenshot .
it's totaly crazy !
And don't get me started on RTL fixes for my HEBREW language..

I agreed I like sense 3.0... All I need is adfree, sdcard increase, shootme. all bloatware like the Nova Demo gone and my phone would be complete.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App

I agree as well. The device isn't bad the way it is. I think most people just want the ability to remove bloat apps we'll never use. Apparently Sprint is doing that with their new devices. I wish that was the case with all Android devices.
I could use me some AdFree though... I can't stand all the ads.

For once...
I'm not missing having root. Sure the device could be a tad bit more responsive when doing things but i'm certain that those little things will be fixed with a software update. Right now my thunderbolt seems to launch things just as fast, if not just a hair faster but i'm thinking it has to do with Sense 3.0 and not underpowered hardware. I've used quite a bit of android devices and this one is the first to not get bogged down from doing too many things at once. I can easily hop from a game to gmail, to a phone call, to the market, and back to game without the device skipping a beat and going right back into the paused game. It's very impressive. Sure it gets hot, and it has dust in the screen, but so far it's proven to be one powerhouse of a phone and i'm glad I purchased it.

i'm cool as long as they send some updates out.

I want root so I can have my Titanium Backup restored! I have over 175 applications that I will have to manually install!

S-on is the only reason that's keeping me from buying this phone.

I must have a root fix...it's an addiction!

Well one thing this phone has done is shut my wife up ,she hated my hd2 because I flashed a new Rom or updated like every other day .....she's praying we don't get s-off ,either way I'm glad I have the phone

Went from a doer to a reader....

I don't know about anybody else, but when I had my captivate, I would frequent these boards and download just about any ROM I could get my hands on for the quest for a better phone.
Since getting the Inspire a week ago, it seems as though now I frequent the forums just to read. I have no ambition to have anything but the stock ROM because it is just that pleasant to use.
In fact, I really don't even think I want to root.....not really much of a need anymore other that Titanium backup and easy sideloading.
This is the first smartphone I have been truly pleased with out of the box.
If I could get the wifi hotspot to work consistently I think I would skip the root too. I am coming from a bone stock Nexus one. I really like vanilla android, but Sense does add a nice touch.

Ya What he said! Just rember to reboot everytime you change your apn. it works great and from the testing i have done and speaking with ATT they cant tell the difference..
Agreed, but
I loved this phone out of the box, but i have to tinker. It is a problem i have. I rooted and have tried just about every ROM out there. Nothing is quite as good as stock, but there are some really good ones out.
If you are happy with your phone, i say leave it. But if you want to root, this phone should be great as the devs start working with source and cooking up great ROMS and kernels.
The only tinkering I want to do now is theming. I will patiently wait for someone to deodex the stock Rom.

Anyone else not as inspired to flash?

See what I did there... You know, with the title.
Any who, this is my second android phone and I'm so happy with my inspire, I actually am not that inspired to flash any roms. I mean this in no disrespect to the developers here, as they are doing awesome work, I'm just very content. Sure I'm curious to flash, but I don't feel the need to at all. Htc has done such a great job with sense and the phone is just so smooth! It's pretty damn fast out of the box. I love the email app and Internet. The browser is fast and the entire sense GUI is quite intuitive. I guess with my captivate, I was never quite happy so I needed to flash often at a glimmer of hope of a decent device.
Anyone else feel the same?
I will eventually flash. I will...but I'm in no rush, at all.
exactly I never was happy with captivate tried flashing different things but it really doesnt change much except for theme removing bloat and some lag fixes but all in all it was still very laggy no matter what. inspire looks great out of the box and i dont feel the need to change roms all the i probaly will just to check em out and check out the speed increases

I don't side load apps. I got tethering to work with apn settings. Don't really see a need for OCing. It's cool, but don't see the need. There doesn't seem to really be much on android that pushes the CPU. One of my arguments for not getting the dual core atrix. If the screen was big like a tablet, maybe. There is just a lack of resource intense apps on android.... At least to rationalize the loss in battery life. The screen on the inspire slides from screen to screen as fast as my finger glides. The browser scrolls fast as well. I do appreciate some of the optimizations that devs have put into their roms. The roms look great...I just can't believe I'm happy with stock. I was really gearing up for a flash fest.
Well it really depends on what you want. If you flash a ROM say like Android Revolution. Yes it will remove bloat ware, and enable tethering. But you can also overclock the cpu, enable upload (which effects your download). It is more about having control over your phone then changing how it looks or feels unless you go with CM7 or the like. I get about 10 more hours of battery usage. I can unplug my phone at 7 in the morning use it heavily throughout the day and go to bed at 11 or 12 and still have about 40% left on the battery. To give you an idea how heavy my usage is, I went through 1gb of data in three days.
Ditto.... I have no reason to flash....everything works the way I want it to, and excellently at that.....
Via the XDA app for the HTC Inspire
Ya I don't have a desire to flash a custom rom either.
I felt I had to when using the Captivate since the stock rom was so bad. But I feel the Inspire's ROM is great just the way it is.
I used to jailbreak my iPhones for years, but finally got bored with doing it.

Yeah, upload speed, memory optimizations, and prolonged battery life would be my only reasons for flashing. I don't want to lose anything from the current sense ui. I still don't quite understand the goldcard concept.
Anyway, this is a rare phone that is good right out of the box.

I felt the same way all of you did about how great the phone is out of the box. But I needed to have it work as a hot spot and the upload is so slow out of the box because of AT&T. After flashing (now using CoreDroid) I have HUSPA back and my phone is so much faster. What I like about this ROM is it is very close to stock but no bloatware and he made HTC sense look even better (which is hard to do).
As to the goldcard thing, there is a video on Youtube that walks you through step by step making it very easy for anyone.

I want to enable those upload speeds but when I did that on my captivates, the battery went to utter crap. I think it was due to using an European radio..how has battery been with it enabled?
My battery lasts any where from around 20 to 30 hours with heavy to moderate use with uploading enabled. Also just like leedroid android revolution is pretty much stock but faster better battery life and uploading enabled

My reasons to flash :
1 ) I like tidy. All that crap on the stock ROM annoys me.
2 ) APN hack to enable tether isn't tidy.
3 ) Speed. Revolution ROM is faster than stock, noticeably so.
4 ) Fixes. I have more faith in the XDA devs than I do in AT&T to fix problems
5 ) Battery. I'm getting great battery life on Revolution ROM, but I'm not a heavy user so stock would have been suitable for me here but I suspect *most* XDA peeps would fair better on a non-AT&T ROM.

I think the battery out of the box on this phone is the worse I have ever seen. I have a Desire (not HD) that I bought unlocked and it works on AT&T (got one for my wife as well) it has a BIGGER battery in it with a smaller screen that battery last forever.
In our beloved inspire (which I think is a great phone) for whatever reason they have put this very small battery in it and I could not get 6 hours out of it with my usage from the stock ROM.
On the custom ROM I am using I think battery use is still an issue but at least I can get a whole day out of it. It has improved and I know the Dev's will make it even better.
edit: the kernel and radio you use will also play an important role in battery life
Yeah, I was like that up until I finished the video tutorial on Gold Cards jumping from the captivate as well, that thing was flashing like...every three days. It was absurd. It was awesome, but going from a build where I liked everything but the GPS didn't work was super depressing. Gambling is fun and all, but not when some of your phone's core functionality is at stake :'( well I guess that's just a risk with flashing in general... but I just feel like with the captivate it was a necessity... and a risk. Here on the other hand, you wipe, wipe, and away!
P.S.
Does anyone who used to own a captivate still get a reaction to Galaxy S/Captivate news? I got sort of excited when I was reading engadget and I saw the Captivate 2.2 update and the Galaxy S Gingerbread leak. Then I remembered I have the ability to flash CM7.
Im trying to find a reason besides battery to flash..the phone is quick, Sense is really good and replaces a lot the widgets I already had. Im tempted just for the sake of doing it more than for a need
I never flash.... I was stock on my N1 and I will remain so on my Inspire.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I'll more than likely root and flash Revolution in the next couple weeks...but I'm still lost to all the jargon in the Development section haha
I'm going to wait for the best one-click and any kinks to be worked out before I pull the trigger though
It took going through the app drawer with my 115 apps plus the AT&T stuff lagging all the way for me to think, "This phone needs Cyanogen." Haven't looked back, although I do want to flash one of the Sense Roms floating around. Sense was pretty amazing.

I would really love to flash but coming from the Cappy, my first android phone. Rooting this phone seems to be really confusing. The one click looks promising but there are some problems with it, that I hope Buddy fixes soon. The Attn1 method lost me. I have never been able to use adb on my computer for some reason. I have all the drivers installed and the androidsdk but for some reason I can never figure out the how to start to connect to my phone in the command window. I always get an error.

Have you tried a Sense cleaned up (bloatware) ROM? In any case, you might want to use Titanium to at least freeze some of the bloatware apps. You should still be able to get the OTA 2.3 update if/when HTC/TMo finally gets around to it.
I am not sure if being rooted will prevent that.
root on stock ROM shouldnt prevent it. although you will probably lose root. good idea to wait to update and see what the devs say about any new update. losing root to a new update isnt cool because you never know how long it will take for some one to figure out how to root again.
I am with you. I have not tried nor want to try any roms. I really like the default rom as is. I came from the HD2 where I flashed so many different roms, I ended up staying with a version of the mytouch 4g. Then I went and bought a real mytouch 4g and love it. I also rooted to get rid of the crappy apps. No problem with keeping it as is. People will always try and talk you into flashing a custom, but to be honest this is the first time I never have had any bugs or issues that I had to live with until the "next update".
same here...no matter how many different ROMS I flash, I always end up going back to the stock MySense. I did have a great experience with Orange Sense tho, pure sense and blazing fast thanks to Faux
Totally with you guys, after flashing several roms, trying to get them to work properly, then ending up too frustrated to continue, went right back to stock rom. rooted and removed bloatware. now happy as can be.
Same deal here. I came from the HD2 running android as well with the MT4G build, then I just bought the real deal. Mainly for the wifi calling and the front camera for the video calling. I gave the HD2 to my daughter and for some reason just last week the touch screen stopped working,, for windows and android. So there sending me a replacement, it should be here sometime this week. Does any of you know if I can use HP3 to flash roms and android builds? cuz I did use HD2 and Now I can't find it but I did find HD3. I waS Just wondering if they did the same thing. but I'm glad to hear i'm not the only one who digs the stock sense. I thought I was the only one.. LOL.. although now that CM7 is officially out I may give it a look... but I'm sure as always i'll end up back with stock.. and hopefully we'll get the honeycomb upgrade or the 2.3 sooner or later..
I'm also happy with the Stock Sense Rom, so happy in fact that I haven't rooted yet lol. My last phone was a mytouch 3g, which I rooted a few months into owning it, because with that phone there were so many glitches and so much lag that you had to root it to get it to work decently. And I wound up flashing a bunch of sense roms lol. But with this phone, it pretty much works and does everything I need it to out of the box.
With that said, do you guys really think it's still worth it to root for the non-rom-flashing benefits? i.e. setcpu and removal of bloatware? For my needs, I don't really feel like I need to overclock the phone, but I like the idea of underclocking to save battery...also, while the bloatware apps are annoying, it's not like they have taken away any functionality of the phone...I know everyone here's MO is "ROOT ASAP" but it seems like it's a little more complicated than it was for the MT3G, and while I'm not an idiot, I'm not really a tech-whiz either lol. Just not sure if it's worth the trouble and risk if I don't want/need to flash different roms.
I ran stock for a month and used ADW Launcher EX (normal version does this also) in order to hide the bloatware from the app drawer. This phone has so much power that for me it was out of sight out of mind with bloatware. I would assume LPP and other home replacement apps would have similar functions.
I flashed around a bit after rooting but always came back to stock, but then I switched to Orange Glacier by Faux123. It's stock, just quicker and debloated with some system apps moved in case you want to remove them also. IMO it's a bit better, but I still haven't decided how life changing it is His kernels def are.

I waited around 10 days before I rooted my phone just to get a nice feel of how things ran. yes I would definitely root if I were you. if you dont want to uninstall the bloatware, you can just freeze them with titanium. setcpu with a custom kernel underclocking with screen off will improve battery life as well(only OC to play games or view videos)

What has been your experience with rooting your Sensation?

I've reviewed some of the ROM comments and browsed around on the net but can't seem to come to a conclusion on if I should root my device or not. I had a T-mobile G2 before and it was rooted. I loved testing out other roms and finding ones that works best as well as obviously the boosts in speeds.
The Sensation to me feels more complete and aside from some useless apps and the occasional glitchy things that happen with it I'm pretty satisfied overall.
Can anyone provide some positive user experiences with rooting their devices or if some of the roms correct some of the known issues with the Sensation reliable without causing other issues lol?
I'm really up in the air about this and can't decide, what do you guys think?
I rooted my sensation just Cos I did the same to my old x10 mini, I found rooting it was easy following the guide on here and flashing new roms is easy too, all I can suggest is that you read the instructions, try different roms to see which one works for you and don't forget that rooting voids your warranty

When flashing custom roms are you losing all installed apps each time and finding you need to restore via titanium? I ask because I've seen threads say you do and don't lose your installed apps and data.

Heyya,
I'm pretty new here and my experience with android devices was 0 up to three weeks ago when i decided to buy the sensation. I then stumbled upon XDA dev forum and now i'm hooked .
I decided to root and flash a custom rom three days after getting the phone... as far as eye candy goes Sense is brilliant but the functionality is 0.
The whole process of installing clockwork, perm rooting and flashing a custom rom took exactly twenty minutes and was no hassle at all.
At the moment i run P3d Neon-No Sense and the phone is a whole lot better. Battery life is double, RAM consumption is 1/2 and overall the performance is great.
So... my advice... root and flash away!
Thanks jeryko that's the kinda thing I was looking to hear. The sensations touch screen is the only reason I'm Leary about voiding the warrenty with rooting. If you unroot the device can they still tell?
I love sense I think it integrates things nicely and visually (with the exception of a few minor things) and gives a way more polished premium feel to devices. However as stated above it does bog down the phone a bit...even with the dual core. HTC really should have added 1gb of ram I think. Overall though my phones not slow just sometimes a little stutter here and there.

ive rooted my sensation, well i at least i did / was rooted before the update came out. to be honest i haven't seen any reason to reroot. i still have a unlocked boot loader but the urge to root and flash roms isnt really there for me yet. this is probably because i am happy with sense 3.0 and the phone doesnt lag for me at all after the latest update. the only real thing that will probably get me to root again is when a good aosp rom releases or CM7. i really miss having then bluetooth capabilities of a stock aosp rom
No problem. Well... the sensation has it's drawbacks but price/quality it's definitely worth the money.
About the warranty issue... can't really tell you... I've read on the forum that you can Switch back to stock rom and kernel and S-ON again but the procedure (for S-ON) is a bit risky and frankly i have no clue if after you go through all that there's any way of telling that the phone has been tampered with... you'll have to ask the older and wiser folks around here for a knowledgeable answer.
Root it, stop delaying the inevitable.

And that's why I don't regret going s-off and flashing custom ROMs. Root just comes with the territory.
Funny thing, I went custom on my Sensation within the first week while I left my wife's stock. Fast forward three weeks later, I was pretty satisfied with the speed and stability on my phone. I pick up my wife's phone and unlock it to surf the net. First thing that happens? Random restart and back to the HTC splash screen. Really?? I'd totally forgotten about the random restarts and choppy home screen scrolling. Ended up s-offing that thing and flashing a custom ROM that same night. She hasn't complained about her phone since.
I'm so tempted....you guys are evil lol Seriously though the only thing holding me back is the warrenty being voided. I didn't care so much with my G2(that thing was the most reliable phone ever) but the sensation is still new and I'm skeptical about how long the hardware will keep up and all. My biggest complaint would be the volume on some things ...everything else works great though except an occasional lack of response until I lock and unlock the phone...which is rare.

The ONLY reason I rooted was to remove the apps I don't want to use. I'm running my own ROM which is a basic version of 1.45.401.2 with all the crap I don't want removed. If it didn't have the **** on the ROM in the first place I probably wouldn't have bothered to root it

Agreed....
I unlocked the bootloader as soon as I could and started loading custom ROMs. I've been running the P3D ROM (Sense version) for a few weeks now, and it's doubled my battery life plus it's faster. My brother has his Sensation still S-ON stock (latest OTA update) and we compared it side by side and we both agreed mine is noticeably faster. I also like the blue neon theme with that ROM.
Even that particular ROM aside, I've had generally better battery life with anything other than the stock ROM. That alone is enough reason to do it IMO.

Ok I know that I am a noob to rooting and installing roms. Currently I am on my second one Android Revolution HD™ 3.0.3. Rooting it was the best thing I've done. i wish I would have gotten the balls to root years ago!
Hi, I know I asked earlier but when you flash a new Rom do you lose all your apps and data? I see many people flashing new roms weekly and daily and am just wondering how you deal with all your apps and data. I can't imagine everyone starting from scratch each time. I know titanium can do a batch restore, is that what everyone does? (Sorry for my noobish behavior in this thread.)

I am very happy with my rooted Sensation. My previous phone was a rooted Nexus One. I can say that rooting is a great way of customizing your phone to your liking.

Titanium batch, best app purchase for the crack flasher. I timed myself, 30 mins tops to go from one rom to another

+1 for Titanium batch! A must for all heavy Flashers
We should have root access out of the box. Too much fun stuff, but impossible to find a ROM perfect for you. Your going to tweak something eventually
just got my sensation 4g still in box..first thing on to do list is "root it and boot it"
currently running HTC HD2 with ndt miui rom...love it but got to have that 4g

Why ROOT?

Sensation is the best android phone I've had so far, I don't see how rooting it will benefit. It's already fast, apps2sd, pre installed screen shot, reboot, skins and themes +...
Only thing missing is bloat, CPU, overclocking, and ad remover, I can do with out.
Anyone care to differ? Lol

Those are the reasons I rooted, and to try different Roms and get the Beats Audio onto my normal sensation
The main reason I wanted root was to use titanium backup to restore apps/data from my hd2. Overclocking on this phone wasn't necessary for me and I don't care about the bloat as long as they don't insist on running.
Adfree is a bonus, so is hacking letsgolf to give you a million dollars
Rooting is very useful as many apps require it. I would've been satisfied with temp root, but my phone came with the update already applied and I couldn't use it.

Another reason I rooted is to use apps like:
Led me know - extends led time
Auto starts - controls which apps start up, etc
Market enabler - download apps from other countries
Tons more apps work better with root by unlocking more features and giving more control and customization.

If you're happy with Stock, there probably isn't a compelling reason for you to root. Why go through all the time and hassle, right?
For me, it was a quest to improve battery life. Stock ROM for me was awful. I couldn't seem to get through a 8-10 work day with light-to-moderate use without having to recharge. I know for some this is acceptable, but I had a hard time reconciling my times with what some others where reporting (20+ hrs with same usage).
When I had my iPhone, the only compelling reason I jailbroke it was to get wifi hotspot functionality.
Maybe you just haven't found that one "thing" you can't live without, yet.
I have a rooted functional G1 still, and a mytouch slide, I just wanted to see what people thought now about rooting, and the sensation, especially since newer phones have a lot more options.
I did forget to mention hotspot lol, as far as the battery, I have 3 and always carry one around with me
I just found out about the screen shot that's pre installed few days ago. I've tried all the apps and purchased one that works w.o root lol, Roms, mods, themes ect... Can be a bit to much. I'm a home screen freak I change every thing from widgets to icons daily lol. One of the best features imo.
Only thing lacking is the ability to remove stock apps. I'm not sure if I want to go through all the trouble of rooting just for that lol
I also use dropbox and 4shared to save apps and use at another time, with out using phone memory, uploading from the phone is pretty sweet lol

that is a very good answer to the OP
I'm in the same situation where my 1 week old sensation is on stock. It's seems to tick all boxes at the moment so I don't really feel the need to take the risk and root. Apart from custom roms I haven't really seen the need, but I'm sure that will all change soon once I get more familiar with the phone. I remember with my hd2 the first day I got it I changed Rom as the development is still great there

Why not root? That's the real question.

Cuz it's a pain. There isn't an easy way to do it like there was for WM 6.5 or iOS for that matter.

It depends what type of phone you have, some require a pc, adb knowledge, and some other stuff, others have easy root apps that seem to work best before the update lol.
I think Droids are probably the easiest to root, or any phone with 2.2 lol

No simple? I rooted this phone within 20 minutes after getting it yesterday! I followed the instructions for revolutionary and now I'm on AR 4.1.x and my phone is underlocked @800Mhz. The battery is awesome plus the speed is astounding.
It depends on how you look at it;
Why Root?
- You get total control over system files, permissions and applications. You can do pretty much anything. You can flash custom ROM's, overclock the phone, get rid of bloatware and so on... Basically rooting brings you total freedom.
Why not to root?
- You will not receive official HTC software updates after you've rooted. The only way to install these is to download them from here, and do it manually. You risk bricking the phone every time you manually install something (altho, if you know what you're doing the risks are quite small). If you install a custom ROM you will most likely have many bugs, and some functions do not work. If you overclock you will shorten the life-span of your phone & the phone battery, which is the biggest problem.
You'll need to consider all of these things before you do anything. I've decided to stick with the stock ROM because Sensation is so expensive and I really don't want to shorten it's life-span.
I want to Root cuz i want to be Administrator of my 500$ gadget that i paid for.. I don't want HTC to dictate me what not to remove or what not to change...

OK. It worked for you...... But it doesn't work that well for everyone. I used to switch ROMS multiple times a day at times on WM and I 1-click jailbroke multiple iOS devices. I had an HD2 running multiple awesome ROMS and dual booting Android (which was awesome), but rooting this phone proved many times more difficult than any of that. So much so that I finally said, "Why bother? It's awesome as is anyway!"

woah, 20 minutes? Thanks to the devs here, they make it SO much easier. My htc magic was a pain to root and follow cause of the bajillion diff radios/SPL's!
I took probably like 5 and another 5 or so figuring out how to sim-unlock it!
Another reason to root is to save yourself a couple bones by rooting it and unlocking the phone!

Thats including having to turn it on, signing in, standing in amazement of the beautiful phone in his hands for 15 mins... lol
In all seriousness the main reason for rooting for me was to get CM7, Sense is beautiful but I love CM7 so much. Another was the kernels xD They improve the device soooooooo much even if you are on stock they make the Sensation even better [yes its possible (;]
In the end its all up to what you want, if you dont find a reason then you can just leave it stock
