ok so with all the new amazing development thats been going on around here lately, its time to explain to you guys how to properly use what we've been given.
What are you trying to say dsexton?
that raverx3x and i have figured out how to properly use voodoo and optimze it so that you can have a completely stock sgs4g rom without any mods or tweaks and get a 2000 on quadrant standard.
why does this matter:
not simply just for the score confidence, this actually makes the phone smoother, drhonk even agress that system definitely doesnt need to be ext4 right now, also on a normal stock rom you will get 1000 quad scores and 11 mflops IF YOUR LUCKY, with this mod you get 2000 stock quad scores with 17 to 20 mflops stock!!!
it doesnt just raise your quad scores, it also raises the performance of the phone having cache and system as ext4 is not proper, maybe when we get into Gingerbread it will be, this also will raise your mflops
what you will need:
BLACK ICE ROM KD1 BASED NOT BLACK ICE VOODOO(bionix frost you will get 1800 stock)OR A NANDROID BACK UP
ext4 converter
bali 3.1
Ok so when using bali 3.1 the voodoo will convert system, cache and data to ext4
we dont want system and cache to be ext4 only data
so how do we do this?
get ready for odin people because we need a clean slate
ALWAYS CHECK MOUNTS
go ahead and odin back to kd1
let kd1 boot up and go into cwm
flash the ext4 converter
then flash whatever rom you would like/or restore a back up
now flash bali 3.1
reboot recovery
go into voodoo and disable lagfix
reboot
now wait for your phone to sit for 5 minutes and test that thing out
when going into voodoo control, voodoo should say that you are rfs if it does then you have done it corretly
you should be averaging 1900 to 2000 stock
and when OC'd you will get past 3000
KNOWN ISSUE: everytime you reboot linda is going to want to convert, she should say "voodoo disabled" if you feel your phone dropped performance or isnt as high as the OP is saying it should be check your voodoo control
if you thought 3.1 was amazing just wait till you do this guys, once again your phones will go above the expectations
Thanks to:
Raverx3x he actually found this out, i just figured out what was going on in the conversion process
drhonk for bali 3.1 and voodoo without this we wouldnt be able to convert just data
dameon for his ext4 converter
krylon for his roms
Reserved for future use.
Going to make 2 sets of init files one for people that wanna use pure ext 4 those that wanna use the data only methood and give directons for both.
Sorry if any of this confused anyone. To be honest the best methood is the data only and system and rfs.
What if we do a nandroid back up and use the rfs converter that dr honk provided us and then ext4 converter and then disabling voodoo and then nandroid restore?

Anybody can explain WHY this is happening? Does ext4 actually perform worse, at least in some cases? Or does the Quadrant for some reason just work with rfs better?

everyone needs to get it out of their head that ext4 is the best
because the truth is ext4 is only the best during certain situations other then that ext3 and rfs are just as good if not better during some operations
as for the nandroid back up and rfs im not sure im just telling you what i did
i would assume that instead of flashing a new rom you could just use your back up and it would work the same

i updated the op
i did more testing and black ice will get an 1800 stock
while bionix frost will get 2000 stock
not much of a difference but still
fyi going back to frost u can push some of the stuff u liked from black ice into frost and it will still function properly U do loose the lock screens tho but the speed gains so makes up for it

If I'm reading the comments right, it seems that Bionix Frost is better than Black Ice with this mod?
Btw, instead of flashing a new ROM, can I just backup my Bionix Frost? If not, will it be okay for me to flash a new ROM, then advance restore my data from CWM?
Sent from my awesome SGS4G
going to try a CWM backup/restore with rfsformatter, and try this method.
would we see similar results with kd1 as far as the smoothness?
kf1 modem
At what point did you add the KF1 Modem?
Which KD1 file did you use? I think i found a few...different dates.
I totally see your point here...odin a clean slate...is always best!
i have a rooted stock kies updated kd1 that "should" be sitting in recovery for a restore, with black ice installed. I never did a wipe...and i'm going to just go for a clean slate too.
you have done an awesome job putting this together to test point a -- z.
Yep, thats fast
Followed instructions, went with bionix frost and am getting 2600-2700 overclocked at 1.3. Very nice and smooth, thanks for all your hard work guys.

Once you get your Captivate get Ryan's One Click lag fix and use it only to root your phone. Then you will have Super user permissions, next step would be Titanium Backup available on the market which you need root to get. Next step get ROM Manager donated version off the market and use Clockwork mod recovery through ROM manager to always perform backups before flashing new ROMs or Kernals. Yes, SRE is easy to install. The only trouble you will run into is Odin one click is for windows systems not Mac so you will probably need to have acccess to a windows based pc if you ever eff your phone and need to flash back to stock.
edit: so i need to root first then do the sre?
You should root first so that you have ROM manager and Titanium to back up before flashing SRE. One Click lag fix on the market will do this for you, but only use it for rooting not the lagfix. Tatuyama's ext4 lagfix is better imo.
Unhelpful's Kernal is included in SRE, fyi.
The new hybrid ROM still has some bugs and SRE is as good, imo.

so odin is basically a "factory restore?" and can odin be used only on windows based computers? so once i get my captivate i can go straight into SRE?
odin is a program that will apply factory firmwares to your phone. so whether you want to restore to stock or try some of the newer leaked firmwares available, odin is the tool to use. and as far as i know it is for pc only.

thank you for clarifying. so it is only windows based? parallel's might not work? well i hope when i do run SRE, i will be good! im not really into modifying the phone heavily. just wanna run SRE cuz it sounds very promising and helps make the device run smoother.

can u provide me to the right place for the tatayuma ext lag fix? so why aren't u using the OC version of sre? so u applyed the tatayuma then sre and ur good?
edit: nvm i found the tatayuma... just dont know what to use!!! theres quite a few to choose from!!! how did u all manage to choose the right one???
the tatayuma works very well with sre. the order i went in was flashed to stock rom->flashed sre->installed lagfix. i didnt want to go with the oc version because i think the phone is fast enough as it is and really what is another 200mhz going to do to this phone? as for the lagfix, i went with the ext4 as it has been proven to be more stable than the ext2. for me i am more concerned with reliability over power/speed. overclocking means more heat and more power being sucked out of the battery and we all know this battery is quick to die.
Our phones are running on RFS file systems and that isnt the best.. actually its know to be very slow/laggy .. atleast when compared to ext4 filesystem
With a script thats available on xda to convert to ext4 we'd be able to do it, the only problem is ; we'd need our kernel to support the ext4 filesystem.
im not good with kernel building or anything like that but it seems its not too hard to do, as Krylon360 (Dev who built our CWM recovery) said to me
krylon360 said:
not hard to do at all. unpack, add in ext4 mount options, repack, then flash kernel, and script to convert.

Now im guessing to someone who is familiar with kernels may see thats an easy task, but i just dont know if anyone with this phone has kernel experience atleast enough to get this task done. if someone could do this, our phones would be blazing fast, those conversions are basically like whats known as voodoo lagfix. opening apps are instant and overall experience is much better. also our quadrant scores would be around 2.2k+ (for those that care about quadrant). Hopefully all working together we can achieve this and have our phones 100% lag free
im going to keep doing more reading but i hope someone can chime in who may know more about kernels than myself
I dont have the zimage here at work. shoot me the STOCK KD1 zImage and I'll patch it.

Yep, tried mine and wouldn't boot, had to flash the stock kernel. I'll look into it when I get home. Krylon will probably beat me to this just like CWM, but i'll keep trying anyways.
I've been trying to compile a stock kernel all day, but can't seem to get anything. It seems that I am using the wrong initramfs, but I can't seem to figure out what the correct initramfs is. hopefully krylon has better luck than me.
I have gotten a correct initramfs, thanks to Epsylon3 on #cyanogenmod-dev. I have successfully built the stock kernel, but still have yet to get ext4 support added.
Sending test kernel to AyoTeddy now, works for me, i'll have him test and then release it.

lol yea thats what i thought i did! im new to android but i already know that odin is a must have. i have a sprint epic and i soft bricked it a few times as well trying to get it rooted/custom rom. i have the rooted stock kd1 rom for her tmobile sgs and stock rooted ec05 for my sprint sgs. those roms always seem to bring me back from a soft brick so im holding on to those.
another issue im running into is that cwm does not seem to fully install. i replace the recovery file and the reboot into recovery, flash the cwm zip and it works... that is until i reboot the phone, then i get the samsung recovery...
also, i dont think i mounted/unmounted... im going to retry this. oh yeah, what exactly is bionix about??? just curious... i have acs syndicate frozen rom on my epic oc'd to 1.2 and uv'd using genocide 1.1 kernel with lots of mods.
would you guys say that bionix is a good rom? what themes and mods work on this rom?
Your cwm works fine. Once you are in samsung recovery, you should click on reinstall packages.
Once you have installed a rom, I would flash the bali 3.1 kernel its a newer cwm.
Always check mounts.
Check out the bible for bionix info. It's nothing but amazingness from krylon and team whiskey. Same with black ice. Check out trigger too. A lot of options.

Hey guys, I'm finally gonna flash GB, i know this ain't big news to any of you, but it is to me haha. So, i'm going to list the steps i'm going to take to flash it, these are according to the guides i've watched and read, but weren't specific enough to me. PREPARE TO READ.
By the way, my files are: KG4 leak by chadster, KG4 kernel with root&voodoo by Dr.Honk, and Valhalla ROM by Whitehawkx. PROPS TO THESE AWESOME DEVS!
1)Boot into recovery, and disable voodoo, reboot again to ensure re-conversion to rfs.
2)Boot into recovery again, this time go to: advanced>partition>create one with 2048(whatever that means? o_o)
3)Open up odin(I'm using 1.85), power off phone, Enter download mode, hold two volume keys, plug in USB.
4)Enter files according to file name.
PIT-Hawk_Sidekick_VibrantPlus_831.pit
PDA-CODE_T959VUVKG4_CL385158_REV00_user_low_noship.tar.md5
Phone-T959VUVKG4-Phone-CL1037720.tar.md5
CSC-SGH-T959V-CSC-TMB-VIBRANTP.tar.md5
(I've heard that re-partition checks itself on while entering the files, and that you should leave it on.)
5)DOUBLE CHECK, I don't wanna brick my phone!
6)HIT START! WOO, hope it'll work for me.
7)If the phone boots, you can let it boot up then Power Off it, or do a battery pull.
8)Hit reset on odin, then re-enter Download Mode, via instruction #3.
9)This time, click PDA, and find Dr.Honks KG4 kernel w/ root&voodoo that you downloaded.
10)HIT START! WOO!
11)This is confusing to me, as according to the guides and videos, YOU CAN battery pull when it boots or Power off after boot-up and enter Recovery by holding Volume keys and Power/Unlock simultaneously(which means at the same time) and release when it boots up. It should boot up into RED CWM, then i'll want to check mounts(OR SHOULD I WIPE EVERYTHING: DATA,CACHE,DAVLIK first?)and make sure that they're UMMU.
12)Go to the main screen of recovery, select zip from sd, select (INSERT ROM OF CHOICE HERE), I'm flashing valhalla, it's been a tough debate of audiophile FTW or that.
13)LET IT FLASH YO!
14)I should end up in recovery still, recheck mounts.
15)(NOT POSITIVE IF THIS'LL WORK, but I'm trying)Flash busyboxinstaller.zip from FB's starter guide thread.
16)After that's done, go to the voodoo section, enable it on next boot, then REBOOT.
17)PRAY THAT IT'LL CONVERT(DAMN WELL BETTER!)
18)If it booted up, and errrrthang's all good. I'll enjoy a cup of coffee and some GINGERBREAD.
Well, that wasn't too much was it? Please comment to recorrect my errors or to say I'm good to go, as this will be my way of flashing GB. I'll appreciate any feedback AS LONG AS I GET FEEDBACK.
P.S- I would love it if some devs would also help give me the green light.
Thanks awesome community!
you don't need to use the pit file but every thing else looks good to me
Looks good flash away

Question..... if per say u get a new phone and Odin the same GB release do u have to redo the whole partioning of the sd card again? even if u did it prior on ur other phone?
Yeah, I've been reading up on GB ever since the KG4 leak, just been afraid to actually flash it, due to no experience with ODIN. This wasn't really supposed to be a guide, just a reassurance for me. But I don't mind people using it as one, I tried to make it as specific as possible. I appreciate the feedback guys, it makes me feel secure. LOL
P.S- I still haven't flashed it yet, I noticed my micro usb it fitting very loosely on my 4G, and since one mistake in ODIN can doom your phone, I'm extremely cautious. BUT I WANT GB! GAAAHHHHHH.

Am I doing it correctly or would u recommend otherwise?

From stock 2.2.1 to 2.3.4 gb? I would use the same method in the op. But i would skip the voodoo steps in the begin because if i started from stock 2.2.1, all i would need to do is access download mode to odin kg4 leak. This is because it's easier to start without voodoo i think. And after flashing the kg4 kernel, you'll have voodoo recovery back. If linda wont convert, i guess you just repartition again. it's almost the same as the method i will use, someday... LOL.
Lol...did you flash it/need help with anything?

Ditching an iCrap4 for this phone was the best idea I had in a while, and within an hour after buying it I rooted it (had to do other shopping) . But there is so much more to choose from for an actual android device. The thing is I want to stay on stock 2.2.1 for a little while, until I do a lot more studying on roms.
Ok so here are my questions after tearing thru the searches with several different phrases:
1: Can I flash different kernels on stock rom? I keep getting many threads and read thru them hard but can't find the answer. Looking at Community Kernel 8.
2: Darn, reading thru other threads while creating this post fried my brain, forgot what 2 was.
Thanks y'all.
Yes You can! . I have flashed many different kernels on stock rogers infuse 2.3.3 with odin. I dont see why you wouldnt be able to on the AT&T version.
Sweet! Now to read up on odin, but will SGS or CWM work on the stock? That was the second question.

SGS kernel flasher works fine on stock ROOTED 2.2.1 ROM. I believe CWM is flashed/installed when you flash the community kernel in SGS kernel flasher or other method. I can't remember off-hand as it's been a while since I was on stock froyo for any length of time. LOL.
You will probably also want to read up on Heimdall as well. It's a good method of flashing pretty much anything to your phone and Odin can be finicky sometimes. Personally, I've never had a problem with Odin but knowing how to use both is a good idea. You know, just in case.
Even sweeter then, and I have CWM already, so that will get replaced? No problem.
This is gonna be hectic keeping all the stuff for the "andros" seperate. lol
I'm really itching to flash a rom, but this thing is set up like I like it, and it was a pain getting her there.
That is why I am waiting to flash, I'll get bored with the way it looks in a week or so, and start over.
Plus RESEARCH is crucial.
Thanks y'all
Ok flashing community v8 now and this voice is telling me it has 5 mins left, oh that is cool!
Now how do I tell if it took? What should cpu spy say? And I still have the green CWM. ( using rom manager, think its ok but can I switch it?)
3 button takes me to Red CWM 2.5.1.3 Voodoo lagfix. It wont let me get to my actual mSD card though. Is that normal?

Edited while you posted about mSD card, but see the Kernel took, my DA self wasn't paying attention.
Do I even need Rom manager? Its CWM is 2.5.1.2

I don't think rom manager does us infuse owners any good so you can install it but I've read it doesn't work all that well with our phones. It worked flawlessly with my n1 but support for infuse is not there yet.
I've never been able to mount the SD card in red cwm if that's what you were referring to. The community kernel does not overclock so really you just take advantage of the ext4 fs and voodoo lagfix (robot voice lol).
Hope this helps.

So everything is going good, trying out different radios now as service in my area sucks!
I have run into a small problem though, I really want a different boot animation, but there is no bootanamation.zip in the system/media folder on the stock rom. Just a bunch of .qmg files. Can I just add the file and it work? I was gonna try it, but wanted to see if anyone else was a guinea pig. Dont wanna screw something up too bad.

if your on stock i believe they are located somewhere else, but the main question is why are you still on stock??? :O
want good battery life and performance? CM7 is the way to go. yeah you can get prolly the same off infused or other roms, but thats after numerous tweaks, tweak this change that, tighten that up, loosen that up, delete that, add this blah blah blah. in my experiences, CM7 is the best out of all of them.
just my 7 cents.
Is everything (bluetooth) working on CM7 (HDMI doesn't I know)? Weird issues of any kind?
That or Serendipity are what I am looking at.
Bluetooth is the only buggy thing. But I don't use it so it doesn't bother me. Other than that its amazing.

Sounds like my ROM then, I use it on my nook, so it will be familiar.

Yeah, battery life is around 15-16 hours for me with 20% left on it when i get home to charge it. this is after some music texting quick searchers and what not. could be better if you really really work the battery though but im fine right now.

If the bootanimation.zip isn't in system/media try data/local. I don't currently have an infuse, in waiting for mine , but other phones I've owned have had the zip in data/local... Good day
Tried data local, but I think the only way to get custom is to have a custom rom. No boot.zip on phone at all using a searcher.
it has to kernel enabled too... Once you get on CM7, if you do, it will be in the media folder.

I'm on the latest KJ4 leak and there wasn't a bootanimation.zip in the media folder neither. All I did was drop what bootanimation.zip I wanted into that folder a BOOM goes the dynamite
Big dog Infuse I997 GB KJ4
Tried that too, no luck.
So Im lookin at S7, but coming from stock ROM, with infused 2.0 kernel, I know I need the infused GB kernel after flashing the ROM, but do I have to wipe system and DATA, and start customizing my stuff again? Or just format system, cache and dalvic, flash rom and kernel, fix permissions, and go? Then my phone should be the same with all stuff there, just updated to a better ROM.
