Ok so am familiar with android, and regularly flash and tweek my nookColor, but this phone is just WOW!
Ditching an iCrap4 for this phone was the best idea I had in a while, and within an hour after buying it I rooted it (had to do other shopping) . But there is so much more to choose from for an actual android device. The thing is I want to stay on stock 2.2.1 for a little while, until I do a lot more studying on roms.
Ok so here are my questions after tearing thru the searches with several different phrases:
1: Can I flash different kernels on stock rom? I keep getting many threads and read thru them hard but can't find the answer. Looking at Community Kernel 8.
2: Darn, reading thru other threads while creating this post fried my brain, forgot what 2 was.
Thanks y'all.
Yes You can! . I have flashed many different kernels on stock rogers infuse 2.3.3 with odin. I dont see why you wouldnt be able to on the AT&T version.
Sweet! Now to read up on odin, but will SGS or CWM work on the stock? That was the second question.

SGS kernel flasher works fine on stock ROOTED 2.2.1 ROM. I believe CWM is flashed/installed when you flash the community kernel in SGS kernel flasher or other method. I can't remember off-hand as it's been a while since I was on stock froyo for any length of time. LOL.
You will probably also want to read up on Heimdall as well. It's a good method of flashing pretty much anything to your phone and Odin can be finicky sometimes. Personally, I've never had a problem with Odin but knowing how to use both is a good idea. You know, just in case.
Even sweeter then, and I have CWM already, so that will get replaced? No problem.
This is gonna be hectic keeping all the stuff for the "andros" seperate. lol
I'm really itching to flash a rom, but this thing is set up like I like it, and it was a pain getting her there.
That is why I am waiting to flash, I'll get bored with the way it looks in a week or so, and start over.
Plus RESEARCH is crucial.
Thanks y'all
Ok flashing community v8 now and this voice is telling me it has 5 mins left, oh that is cool!
Now how do I tell if it took? What should cpu spy say? And I still have the green CWM. ( using rom manager, think its ok but can I switch it?)
3 button takes me to Red CWM 2.5.1.3 Voodoo lagfix. It wont let me get to my actual mSD card though. Is that normal?

I don't think rom manager does us infuse owners any good so you can install it but I've read it doesn't work all that well with our phones. It worked flawlessly with my n1 but support for infuse is not there yet.
I've never been able to mount the SD card in red cwm if that's what you were referring to. The community kernel does not overclock so really you just take advantage of the ext4 fs and voodoo lagfix (robot voice lol).
Hope this helps.

So everything is going good, trying out different radios now as service in my area sucks!
I have run into a small problem though, I really want a different boot animation, but there is no bootanamation.zip in the system/media folder on the stock rom. Just a bunch of .qmg files. Can I just add the file and it work? I was gonna try it, but wanted to see if anyone else was a guinea pig. Dont wanna screw something up too bad.

if your on stock i believe they are located somewhere else, but the main question is why are you still on stock??? :O
want good battery life and performance? CM7 is the way to go. yeah you can get prolly the same off infused or other roms, but thats after numerous tweaks, tweak this change that, tighten that up, loosen that up, delete that, add this blah blah blah. in my experiences, CM7 is the best out of all of them.
just my 7 cents.
Is everything (bluetooth) working on CM7 (HDMI doesn't I know)? Weird issues of any kind?
That or Serendipity are what I am looking at.
Bluetooth is the only buggy thing. But I don't use it so it doesn't bother me. Other than that its amazing.

Yeah, battery life is around 15-16 hours for me with 20% left on it when i get home to charge it. this is after some music texting quick searchers and what not. could be better if you really really work the battery though but im fine right now.

If the bootanimation.zip isn't in system/media try data/local. I don't currently have an infuse, in waiting for mine , but other phones I've owned have had the zip in data/local... Good day
Tried data local, but I think the only way to get custom is to have a custom rom. No boot.zip on phone at all using a searcher.
it has to kernel enabled too... Once you get on CM7, if you do, it will be in the media folder.

I'm on the latest KJ4 leak and there wasn't a bootanimation.zip in the media folder neither. All I did was drop what bootanimation.zip I wanted into that folder a BOOM goes the dynamite

Tried that too, no luck.
So Im lookin at S7, but coming from stock ROM, with infused 2.0 kernel, I know I need the infused GB kernel after flashing the ROM, but do I have to wipe system and DATA, and start customizing my stuff again? Or just format system, cache and dalvic, flash rom and kernel, fix permissions, and go? Then my phone should be the same with all stuff there, just updated to a better ROM.

a little unnecessary....
you dont have to use the disable and then flash the kernel. If you are using a rom that doesnt have a dedicated disable.zip made for it (Fresh and Baked Snack have one) then all you do is need to flash the kernel you want of top. This is how I've did it since day one without any issues or lost data of anything. I usually do a Dalvik/cache wipe before flashing the kernel but im not certain that its necessary. Im glad some one made a thread to at least let people know that a nandroid backup isnt needed, cause those take forever...

Its somewhere in the original Psfreedom for evo thread. start and the back and work your way forward and you'll find it.
all this does is avoid the nand restore by flashing back your original kernal. The reason i didn't include this in my thread was because everyone has their own kernal. Sure many use the same but to make it a one step no mess up without people who can't read posting OMG OMG, just nand restore...done. But ya, i chose not to include a "disable" which is essentially a reverting of the kernal.

Honestly, the easiest way to get into recovery is to get Quick Boot from the market. This way you can reboot, or get into recovery with a touch of the button instead of holding buttons. I use it all the time since I'm constantly reflashing things.
Once you are in recovery, just flash update.zip to get into CWM recovery. Next pick the option to install zip from sdcard, find the zip file, and install. After it finishes installing, just reboot. It will take a long time to reboot, don't worry. Just listen, it will talk you through what it is doing.

For some reason I had to do that, re-root the phone after I installed a ROM that is. Give it a shot and then your Quick Boot app should work.
I have this kernel installed. My question is, if I flashed a different ROM that would replace the voodoo kernel with whatever kernel the rom is using correct?

If you are going to flash anything, make sure you disable lagfix first. You can do that by either going into voodoo recovery and selecting voodoo and then disable lagfix, or you can put an empty file in the voodoo folder on your sdcard named disable_lagfix.
That said, if you are going to flash different ROM, check to see if it contains a kernel. They should say whether they do or not. I believe that all of the ROM's that are currently available for the Mesmerize are kernel free now. If it did have a kernel, then yes it would replace the one you have installed. If you are unsure and want to check for yourself, all you have to do is use 7zip or winrar and check the zip package to see if it contains a kernel folder in the first level. If not, no kernel.
Thanks. I kind of assumed all ROMS came with kernels, but that is good to know.
When Froyo is released for this phone would you have to revert back to the stock kernel or just disable the lagfix in order to update to 2.2?

More than likely, the update wouldn't recognize your phone as something it was supposed to go on, so you would need to flash back to stock. Unless of course, the 2.2 you get is a custom ROM, which could be possible depending on who gets it first.
Just a quick question, what is the benefit of going to the Voodoo Kernel?
I have rooted the phone, gone to JT's clean ROM, and used the OCLF. The phone seems amazingly fast compared to what it was stock. Part of me wants to do the Voodoo Kernel, just cause its there, but I don't know if there is any real benefit.
Thanks and sorry if this is a dumb question.

Your post helped answered my question so I'll help answer yours. I was wondering if a rom with less apps would help improve performance, reading your post I'd assume it does. Have you tried quadrant to benchark your phone before and after?
I didn't install any other ROM, just the voodoo Kernel with lagfix - and I noticed a great performance boost difference. Quadrant score was 888 before kernel and now it's 1813. I'll post my score after I change my rom as well.
After flashing this I lost my vibrate functions for calls and sms. After a reboot it was fine.

Not a dumb question at all. OCLF is not a true lagfix. EXT2 lagfixes are placebo. They do speed up the phone, granted, and you will get a benefit. But the cost is a huge chunk of your phone's drive. With voodoo, you don't use up precious space creating a buffer. It creates an EXT4 Data partion saving lots of space. If you have Titanium backup, look at your Internal Drive... mine is 1.62GB with 1.39 GB free. and my DB data is 109 MB with 98.2 MB free. I have 192 apps on my phone. When I was using OCLF I had almost no Internal Drive left. Sure my Quadrant score looked good, but my it was inflated. Now, I know I'm getting the benefit of EXT4 plus all of that extra drive space. There really is a true benefit of using voodoo over OCLF. That and you also have added features in the recovery screen.
Hope that helps answer your question.
Voodoo Kernel will work with any rom or? I still have rooted stock USCC.
Hey guys, I'm finally gonna flash GB, i know this ain't big news to any of you, but it is to me haha. So, i'm going to list the steps i'm going to take to flash it, these are according to the guides i've watched and read, but weren't specific enough to me. PREPARE TO READ.
By the way, my files are: KG4 leak by chadster, KG4 kernel with root&voodoo by Dr.Honk, and Valhalla ROM by Whitehawkx. PROPS TO THESE AWESOME DEVS!
1)Boot into recovery, and disable voodoo, reboot again to ensure re-conversion to rfs.
2)Boot into recovery again, this time go to: advanced>partition>create one with 2048(whatever that means? o_o)
3)Open up odin(I'm using 1.85), power off phone, Enter download mode, hold two volume keys, plug in USB.
4)Enter files according to file name.
PIT-Hawk_Sidekick_VibrantPlus_831.pit
PDA-CODE_T959VUVKG4_CL385158_REV00_user_low_noship.tar.md5
Phone-T959VUVKG4-Phone-CL1037720.tar.md5
CSC-SGH-T959V-CSC-TMB-VIBRANTP.tar.md5
(I've heard that re-partition checks itself on while entering the files, and that you should leave it on.)
5)DOUBLE CHECK, I don't wanna brick my phone!
6)HIT START! WOO, hope it'll work for me.
7)If the phone boots, you can let it boot up then Power Off it, or do a battery pull.
8)Hit reset on odin, then re-enter Download Mode, via instruction #3.
9)This time, click PDA, and find Dr.Honks KG4 kernel w/ root&voodoo that you downloaded.
10)HIT START! WOO!
11)This is confusing to me, as according to the guides and videos, YOU CAN battery pull when it boots or Power off after boot-up and enter Recovery by holding Volume keys and Power/Unlock simultaneously(which means at the same time) and release when it boots up. It should boot up into RED CWM, then i'll want to check mounts(OR SHOULD I WIPE EVERYTHING: DATA,CACHE,DAVLIK first?)and make sure that they're UMMU.
12)Go to the main screen of recovery, select zip from sd, select (INSERT ROM OF CHOICE HERE), I'm flashing valhalla, it's been a tough debate of audiophile FTW or that.
13)LET IT FLASH YO!
14)I should end up in recovery still, recheck mounts.
15)(NOT POSITIVE IF THIS'LL WORK, but I'm trying)Flash busyboxinstaller.zip from FB's starter guide thread.
16)After that's done, go to the voodoo section, enable it on next boot, then REBOOT.
17)PRAY THAT IT'LL CONVERT(DAMN WELL BETTER!)
18)If it booted up, and errrrthang's all good. I'll enjoy a cup of coffee and some GINGERBREAD.
Well, that wasn't too much was it? Please comment to recorrect my errors or to say I'm good to go, as this will be my way of flashing GB. I'll appreciate any feedback AS LONG AS I GET FEEDBACK.
P.S- I would love it if some devs would also help give me the green light.
Thanks awesome community!

I made the mistake of not backing it up and lost EVERYTHING lol
Question..... if per say u get a new phone and Odin the same GB release do u have to redo the whole partioning of the sd card again? even if u did it prior on ur other phone?
Yeah, I've been reading up on GB ever since the KG4 leak, just been afraid to actually flash it, due to no experience with ODIN. This wasn't really supposed to be a guide, just a reassurance for me. But I don't mind people using it as one, I tried to make it as specific as possible. I appreciate the feedback guys, it makes me feel secure. LOL
P.S- I still haven't flashed it yet, I noticed my micro usb it fitting very loosely on my 4G, and since one mistake in ODIN can doom your phone, I'm extremely cautious. BUT I WANT GB! GAAAHHHHHH.

Am I doing it correctly or would u recommend otherwise?

From stock 2.2.1 to 2.3.4 gb? I would use the same method in the op. But i would skip the voodoo steps in the begin because if i started from stock 2.2.1, all i would need to do is access download mode to odin kg4 leak. This is because it's easier to start without voodoo i think. And after flashing the kg4 kernel, you'll have voodoo recovery back. If linda wont convert, i guess you just repartition again. it's almost the same as the method i will use, someday... LOL.

The only time you will get blue recovery is on MIUI, CM7 (bone stock is actually blue too but different) If you tried to flash a non CM7/MIUI rom with blue recovery, that's most likely the reason you soft bricked just FYI. (technically though, you should have been able to 3-finger into recovery, if that was the case.)
The ideal color of CWM to flash from is red, so flash the infusion froyo kernel from the Super Thread if you want red(assuming your on stock Froyo). From there you can flash anything you want. As usual though, for MIUI and CM7, you have to flash the Rom zip twice. (the first gets you blue CWM)

Ok, I am a noob also, and I currently have CM7 installed and can only get to the blue recover. Am I not able to install any other kernel than the one that is packed in with the ROM? I would really love to be able to install either Infuse-GB or the infusion kernel. I really don't feel like "soft bricking" my device. I am assuming just a stock restore or fresh install of a custom ROM would fix that judging by your context, but I just got this thing and I don't want to fully brick it. I am having so much fun flashing all of these roms, as I have been an iOS user these past 4 years, and the [ROM][2.3.7] SuperCm7-Infuse4g-KANG-V1 [12/31/2011] is certainly my favorite ROM so far.

Nah, I did it with another one. But I will someone would mention under the CM7 post what kernels are compatible. I understand I am a noob, but I have done sooo many searches and I can only read so much before I just have to try things out for myself. And you are right, luckily I did not brick it. I wasn't too worried, I sell phones on eBay and I would have just lost some money...no biggie. I hope to gain a better knowledge of the android system and how it works so I can just tinker my butt off. Im a flashaholic.
Hello,
First time poster in this section. I just purchased a SGS4G on Swappa. It's coming rooted with Valhalla Final.
I am planning to get the Walmart/TMob $30 per month plan. I've rooted and flashed my Asus Transformer, but this is my first time with a phone.
So kind of wanted to know my best course of action? I was kind of leaning towards reset to factory, then go ahead and go through the steps to get Valhalla Black. But the rooting/flashing methods are a bit more complicated than what I was doing with my Transformer.
Thank you,
Anton
if it's already running Valhalla, there is no need to go back to factory. You can just flash the new rom through CWM.

Ok, wasn't sure if it was better to clean things up. I will do it that way then. Thank you.
i would recommend flashing to stock first, formatting everything and then moving forward from their. yea, its harder, but it would give you a nice fresh install and can prevent problems in the future

Now can I do that without breaking the root I currently have?
I was kind of thinking of doing that, just since I don't have any clue what the guy did before I had it.

If you go back to true stock then you will lose root. However, there are plenty of modified kernels and ROMs that come with root.
Check out bhundven's One-Click collection. Super easy way to flash the phone. The first one click is straight stock. The 3rd is stock with his beta 2d kernel which also has CWM, root, and voodoo lagfix. I'd suggest snagging the 3rd one, do a factory reset on the phone, flash the 3rd one, then you should be able to throw Valhalla back on it the way you want
what i did... Just me but i would always have that one click flash back to stock always available on your pc Its just me dude you never know what can go wrong.. always keep that back door available.. odin was like my best buddy "ugh" when i first started out..

Sounds good. I will fiddle when I get home and post any followups. Appreciate the help here. XDA is great.
Lmao there is absolutely no reason to flash back to stock if you follow ravers instructions.....your in plenty good shape for flashing valhalla black

So I downloaded ES File explorer, and it's a lot different than my tablet...i don't even seem to have a download folder. Just Android, DCIM, Voodoo and Lost.dir is that normal on phones? I am downloading valhalla black and not even sure where it's downloading too.
Make a "download" folder.....but as you dl something it will most likely create the folder anyhow

ok and the other question would be, it came with a 16gb sd card, is that what I'm accessing? I've always been confused by the android file structure.
Thanks by the way, you live up to your name helping me.

Eh maybe? Do you know the true condition of the used device? Are you sure it has proper boot loaders? Better to ensure you wipe any possible gremlins.

There is a 1 gig internal storage space where the system (ROM, cache, etc) resides. You can install some apps on your sd card (16 gig separate removable space) to save space on the system storage. All of your files, pics, and music end up on the sd card.
He is running valhalla final....there is no reason for him to be concerned with bootloaders at this time when all he wants to do is flash valhalla black.....this doesnt need to be made more complicated than it is...specially for someone new.....this phone is alot more durable and hardy than alot of you guys give it credit for and are only scaring the new people

Your right. It doesent need to be complicated. Nor is it.
One click back to "stock with beta2d", flash desired gb rom.
Not only does this ensure that he knows the true state of the entire device (not just what rom he is on) he also learns how to recover from a soft brick! <~~~ very important when flashing beta roms such as black edition

^ Yea. Learning how to Odin/Heimdall will save a lot of heart ache with the inevitable soft brick haha

Lol ok yea your right...ive always pushed the limits and learned the hard way.....ive found that to be the best way to learn...
and for someone new to any device....i wouldnt be flashing beta roms....valhalla final is a great stable rom....you should stick with it and just spend the next month reading up on your newly purchased phone first.
Dont worry the developement for this phone is slow compared to most so your not gonna miss much.
Only prob ive seen so far in this forrum is there is alot of clutter and to many different opinions on how and what to do and use to flash roms and and such...it is actually very easy...just pick a way and stick with it and learn the other ways slowly....but dont worry....the galaxy s series is virtually unbrickable
