[Q] Questions About Phone Choice - T-Mobile LG G2x

I am allowed to switch my phone to a phone that has Wi-Fi calling, since where I am living now doesn't have a cell signal. I am allowed to pick any phone I want.
I am choosing between the G2X and the HTC Sensation 4G.
For you sensation guys I have a few questions.
Wi-Fi Calling as well is very important and I would like to make sure I can use this on other roms like CM7 and any of the other roms available.
Now how long do we have to wait for new kernels for the G2X (I think its quick because of the Tegra 2 and nVidia) but I want to make sure, since I am currently only use to the Nexus S, it gets everything very quick as well as kernel updates for AOSP.
But I like the look and feel of both phones, but for me Wifi calling so I can be reached at my new location in the meantime. So do the other ROMs come with this built in, or is an app that is available for me to download and install.
Also how far along has CWM Recovery or other recoveries come along with this phone.
If you had a choice would you pick the G2X or Sensation?

I have been told reports of this phone randomly rebooting, is this a problem or has it been resolved?

It is a problem for some people, I personally haven't experienced it myself. Anyways I use wifi calling in my home all the time and it works just fine. Most roms do provide wifi calling, and if they don't, you can just install the apk

When kids are playing online games it drop calls or choppy calls.

WiFi calling works just fine on the g2x. You can't just put WiFi calling apk on a phone, there's more to it than that.
Zero reboots here, running fauxs Rom and kernel at very low voltages.
If you enjoy updating to newer kernels and roms, g2x has the upper hand at the moment.

Switching out the rom is very important for me, as I perfer light pure android (why I currently have a Nexus S) though I am about to loose my beautiful SAMOLED screen.

I thought we had roms since there are some listed in the development section. But siince the boot loader is still locked then we can't do a recovery or install new roms you mean?

Nothing for now. And FYI, the G2X constanly reboots for no reason, so that option isn't a good one either (unless they fixed it since I sold mine).

My Nexus S use to have the Random reboot issue, almost daily, now its down to about 1 random reboot a month or less.
I feel like I want the sensation cause of the new cpu (tegra 2 is a bit dated) and the screen is higher resolution. So as soon as we get root and the unlocked bootloader as HTC has promised, then things will change greatly correct?

Oh hell yea things will change!!! Once you can root the Sensation it will be unstoppable! Go with the Sensation for sure. I have had every phone know to man, and this one has topped them all.
This should answer most of your questions about the Sensation:

Enjoy!
As I am thinking about it more and more I it looks like I will be getting a Sensation 4G.
Though I am thinking about how much I will miss my SuperAMOLED Screen, Voodoo Sound, though to me the sound is more important cause I use my phone for music at least 3 hours a day while riding to work and back on my motorcycle.

BAMF 2.1 vs 1.86 or Anyone experiencing problems with GB

My first android phone was a Google Nexus one. As far as data device it was great but for phone calls it was horrible. I tried everything to get the voice quality normalized including buying three different ones but to no avail. My next phone was a T-Mobile MyTouch 4G. I have no complaints about it. I also have a Samsung Galaxy Tab that I absolutely love and use as my GPS and head unit in the car. All of these devices are running Gingerbread so as soon as I got the Thunderbolt I looked for the best Gingerbread which seemed to be BAMF 2.1 GingerStripped. I had nothing but problems out of this ROM. The battery drained horribly fast and call waiting/ conference calling didn't work at all. I know the problems I experienced were because it is based on an Alpha Gingerbread leak. I played around with this ROM for a month before trying something new.
That "something new" was the 1.86 BAMF Remix which is based on a rock solid Froyo base. It performs! I have no more battery drain now than I have with my HTC incredible flashed to Metro PCS. My call waiting and three-way calling work great too! I've been running it for two weeks and have not experienced any issues. I did strip as much Sense as I could from it and apply the Urban Theme and Juwe11_RAM_Optimisations_777-CWM.zip script.
I am very happy now!
I switched from BAFM 1.8.6 to Liquid Thunderbread a couple weeks ago and find the battery life about the same. The I have not tried three way calling, but pretty much everything I have a tried works well, and it is an AOSP GB ROM.

I'm using GB liquid 1.4. I don't have any problems.

I'm running Synergy and on the latest leak, it has taken me 6 hours to lose 50% battery. No one else comes close.
This is on stock battery and moderately heavy use. Left mobile data on and auto brightness.

I really appreciate you guys input. Does call waiting and 3 way work?
Haven't tried 3 way calling nor I'm popular enough to have calls lined up waiting so haven't tested call waiting either but I can tell ya this that I've been using GingerREMIX 2.1 without issues other then the fact that if you go into the settings, applications, and manage application, don't uninstall or clear data from there when the screen starts flikering as there's a known issue with that. If you do while it's still flikers it's possible that you might clear data or uninstall something you don't want to remove. Instead, wait for it to stop then proceed, works priceless if you just wait =3
I also switched back to the 1.8.6 rom. I running the old imoseyon lean extreme kernel 1.2.3. That gets me atleast 13 hours of with moderate/heavy use.

Wi-fi Calling And CM7 Based ROMs

What's the deal with wi-fi calling working sporadically with CM7 based ROMS? Or...am I the only one experiencing this? Maybe 1/5th of the time I'm connected to wifi will it work. It's not my router or lan (I know what I'm doing in that realm) +my wife's G2X was working the whole time she had the unmolested phone from T-Mobile. Even after I flashed hers with a 2.3.3 (two days ago) it's worked as it should.
Bump d bump.
I'm not using CM7, but it's happening to me, too. From what I've read over the last few days, this is more of a hardware issue than a ROM issue. For me my 4G often stays on while the wifi is enabled. My wife has a G2x running the same kernel and ROM as mine, and hers has no problems. It's really annoying.
You're not using a CM7 derivitive and you're having issues? Odd. I've only experienced it on CM7 based ROMs. Every 2.3.3/ota/stock based ROM connects with nary a problem.

Have you tried using one of the kangs ..there's fitsnuglys and rustys ... I pretty much use fits' kangs, he uses only certain commits in his kangs and from what I understand rustys contain all off the commits up to date... I've never really had a problem with wifi calling and I use it a lot at work...
I haven't. This is my 1st smartphone. 1st time rooting/custom rom'ing and the "kang" sounded too scarey! Might have to give it try though, i miss sixaxis.
Thanks for the tip.
I've had similar problems where the 4G icon stays on with the Wifi and wifi calling enabled along with not being able to get mms to send or receive but sms works fine with wifi calling enabled. I also had the mms problem on the rooted tweaked OTA rom.

I've had some of the same problems in the past... I've also had mms work over wifi no problem but I've flashed slow many I can't remember which one it was.. LOL.. I really have to start keeping track... IMHO my phone functions better for me when I run a custom rom than a stock .. wifi calling is a must for me because my garage gives me horrible reception and I can't be missing customers calls and I usually only have that problem when running a stock rom...

It works! Well, it worked all night and into the morning. Have never had that with any other CM7 ROM. I wonder what Fits' kang does differently. Any "gotcha's" I need to know about?

recommend a rom for me

i just traded my htc vivid for my bros samsung infuse. I loved the vivid but my bro wants it and infuse was mine in the first place. did some swapping around with my brothers. I just hate the stock rom and all the bloatwares. Can someone recomment a smooth stable rom for the infuse? also one that can tether.
Which Rom is a personal preferance.
I currently run F1 Innovation, Fast, Stable and smooth. Not sure about tethering.
F1 Innovation
Check out the super thread: Infuse Super Thread
The current miui does tethering very stable and fast. Also the battery drain seems to be fixed which is a huge plus.

Still i haven't installed it but I read that CyanogenMod 7 works flawlessly on the Infuse. I read you can use it to connect usb devices to your phone so i guess it can do pretty anything, tethering included.
The only thing that seems to work crappy is audio through bluetooth but i bet it's not a big problem : bluetooth is one of the most stupid and unsecure tecnologies ever invented.
You will find on this forum tons of informations about roms...just read it!
I have a preference for Infuse based ROM on my infuse.
they are listed in the dev section under superthread

Don't install a Samsung based rom, which is everything but CM7 or MIUI. Both CM7 and MIUI are AOSP based. MIUI is too much like iOS for my liking. I have been running CM7 on my infuse since I got it, and before that on my inspire, and before that on my captivate. CM7 is the only way to go.
For what it's worth, I'm running CM7, the newest nightly on 1/19. Very stable (some apps I had while running stock Froyo or Infused 2.2.3? would force close alot, not on CM7, but it's a very selective few apps I use for work), very smooth, very fast, overclockable to at least 1.4 gHz for most people. Some people do 1.6 gHz but it's not stable for my phone. You can undervolt it by some amounts for that extra battery savings, and it's constantly having features added to it, like T9 dialing that I discovered was included (much MUCH love for this small thing).
For all the added features, I regularly go through my phone and make sure I don't have apps that do things that are now part of the phone, so I keep the app list short and sweet. Having redundant features means that 2 things are trying to do the same thing, and I'd rather punch out my battery more and more without giving up some conveniences I had Dialer One on my phone, and it's not that great looking, but I had it just for the T9 dialing. Once I saw that CM7 had a T9 dialing feature, I uninstalled Dialer One. The music app, while not as heavy on the eye candy, made me get rid of Doubletwist and Airsync. Airsync never really worked great, for me at least.
CM7 doesn't have fully working bluetooth on the Infuse, some people have trouble with auto brightness (my personal preference is that I'd rather use the status bar slider to adjust brightness), and HDMI out doesn't work. It also has some extra niceties, such as theming, a DSP Manager app (that controls audio levels and equalizers), and is pretty much always being updated.
The drop down bar can be customized almost entirely, and because bluetooth doesn't work, not that I want it, I got rid of that icon. I replaced it with a screen timeout toggle. It has many more options than that.
One thing, and I don't think this is CM7 exclusive, is that sometimes my text messages won't send. I'm using GOSMS as my messaging app until the stock messaging app starts sending ALL of my texts. MMS relies on a data connection so I tend to pull the drop down and enable that when I want to send a picture or download one. Once it starts working the same way, I'm uninstalling GOSMS because it tends to be heavy and sometimes lags up noticeably.
I don't use bluetooth, and I don't think I've ever opened that HDMI dongle packaging, much less tried to use it. While it would be nice if they functioned, I get from day to day without even thinking about those. Your mileage may vary.
I'll throw my support behind CM7. I briefly tried ZEUS, but switched back after a couple days.

The only way to get a rom that has everything working like it should is to flash an infused based rom ...NOT an aosp rom..... cm7 is good if you don't need Bluetooth....as cm7 and miui use a different bt stack then Samsung ...so in my opinion that issue wont be fixed....and they have been known to have data issues....flash ANY of the infuse based Rome if you want complete functionality....period

Like others say if you need BT audio or HDMI stick with Samsung roms. I could care less about both, i have been bouncing back and forth between CM7 and MIUI for months now whenever there is a noteworthy update. Both are very quick and clean in my opinion and you can't go wrong with either one. I have tried most Samsung roms available but they are always short lived on my device...they always feel as if lacking something. Props to the devs for making them available though!!!
thank guys for the responses.. I am currently running the cm7.. looks great and smooth but i got a few issues maybe its the phone itself.
first: seems like my internet/wifi doesnt stay on at times or its not using wifi even tho its turned on.
second: the browser seems to be very slow and it force closes at times maybe it the site that i go to. ESPN scoreboards, i bet a lot so i check scores frequently and open a lot of pages.
third: yeah, battery does seem to go fast maybe because of the excessive use of the web.
BTW do you guys have to put in any apns?? I didnt'.
I don't think it's your phone. I'm still new at this, but as I understand it, you can make/flash tweaks and different modems that may help with the issues you encounter. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm on cm7 and I keep going back to it everytime I flash something new. It just works the best for me. As for data issues, you need to setup the apn fix listed in n0ctrnl's compiled cm7 thread. It's in the original post I believe. Also I flashed the latest modem (uckl2) found in the sticky of development section for modems

Go to wifi settings, hit menu button and go to advanced. Under wifi sleep policy choose never. Should fix the wifi connection issues your having.
I've tried many, but Zeus is the best one that's fully functional (BT and HDMI).
if i flash the miui rom, can i just wipe data and cache than flash the rom? or do i need to do something else?
currently on cm7...

Definately Zeus for now. It's snappy, everything works and theres even a few themes as well as an ICS launcher. All the AT&T bloat has been removed. I used to prefer stock, but Zeus made me convert. It's just more responsive than any other rom for the Infuse.
It's all a matter of personal preference. I've run about 12-15 different ROMs on my Infuse so far. I keep coming back to Sensation 1.1. I really like being able to edit my status bar.
I didn't care for the camera in CM7, but it is a very nice running ROM. Only thing I miss is not having an extended power menu.
Just play with a bunch of them until you find one you like.

Solution for T-mobile US Wifi Calling on ICS Roms?

Hello,
I have a Sensation 4G and having flashed many different ICS Based ROMs (CoreDroid, Android Revolution HD, RCMix etc) and it seems that the Wifi Calling does not work due to the fact the app is not compatible with ICS. Now that the first HTC Device running ICS has been released (THE ONE S) I assume this has the updated wifi calling app that would work on the Sensation ICS Roms. I have been trying to get the Rom so I can extract the Wifi Calling App but so far no luck. Anyone think this is worth a shot?
Trying to find a way to get Wifi Calling working on our Sensation with ICS!
Thanks Devs you are a talented bunch!
Any ICS rom I try that includes wifi calling, it works fine.

Well considering the One S on T-Mobile does NOT support WiFi calling yet, I'd say no, its not worth a shot. The app is not present on the T-Mobile software currently running on the One S.
Remember WiFi calling is from tmob not HTC and they have not updated it yet so just wait for a bit but yeah if we want WiFi calling that's were we will get it from

The T-Mobile branded HTC One S does have Wifi Calling. Out of the box. The difference is, in my understanding, that it is now baked into the ROM. It is no longer a separate app.
The ZDNet review mentions using it on the device, for example (sorry, not allowed to post links), google it, it's from April 18.
I've used it...the software I saw did NOT have support YET (at least not on the demo/review unit I saw). I know it definitely is going to support it though, especially with the eventual launch of T-Mobile's gen 2 WiFi calling. As for the ZDnet article I can't comment, as I haven't read, and don't plan to read it, however, I will say that I saw the unit personally before April 18, so maybe software has updated in anticipation of tomorrow's launch.
Either way the best bet for pulling the updated libs and app is the newly leaked Amaze 4G ICS build here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1615164
Thank you so much Behold_this, your a genius! I'm going to see if I can find the Wifi Calling libs and modules and app and report back with any luck.
As of my testing, The ICS roms with sense 3.6 for the sensation 4g has had the Wifi Calling problem where it crashes when you make / receive a phone call. The wifi calling app works for SMS and MMS messages fine though. Just not phone calls.
The updated version will be better compatible with ICS.
Just remember to deodex the Rom before you pull the app
Thanks again for the advice. I have not been able to successfully figure out which apps / libs need to be pulled and deodexed. Still promising though
