Hi Guys
I am facing a problem with HTC widgets. The problem is that the widgets keep reloading their content frequently
So as i flip through the 5 pages of widgets (mail, people, calendar, news, etc), the contacts in the people widget or the appointments in the calendar widget for example would disappear and the widget would reload them within 5 seconds
I never faced this problem with my desire HD, I dont know but it looks like a memory shortage/allocation problem that is leading to sense clearing whats held in RAM for those widgets.
Has anyone faced this before ? looks like sense 3.0 is still highly unoptimized from a memory usage perspective. On top of this, my desire HD used to fly as compared to the Sensation, Dual core my Ass.................
This happens for me as well but I never considered it a problem. It seems to me that the widgets actually don't update all the time and instead are updating On-demand so the first time you scroll to it in, an __- hour period (I'm not sure how long the time frame is) it takes a few seconds to populate the widget.
I figured it was a battery saver and didn't don't mind it.
I do get a weird text jump back and forth between contact name/contact number in the text messaging widget though and it happens pretty frequently.
not update

Hi BonesRed
does not seem to be an update problem, since not only the friend stream widget does that, but also the contacts/calendar widget
This never happened with the desire HD, and whenever data is being reloaded, the old data is kept displayed until updated with the new data
Apparently the native widgets work good for me, but other ones like pandora, soundhound etc. have pixel glitches, see pic, sometimes only 1 widget sometimes the whole screen.... don't know if anybody else has the same problem and don't know if I should exchange my sensation.
I have the same pixel problem with my Google search bar widget

My widget content will reload but only after a considerable amount of time without use. After the initial load, flipping through pages has no reloads until it's been in my pocket for awhile again.

I'm actually having the opposite provlem, at least with the friendstream widget. I can't get it to update. I've tried manually synching from the widget and from android settings menu but nothing seems to work, its still stuck on July 18th for some reason. Any one have any suggestions?

My widgets are causing pixil glitches as well. Any ideas on what the cause is

I experience the same thing. Also inside the messaging app itself sometimes the contact name is displayed and sometimes the contact number.
I have all the issues stated in the thread do far too. I love this phone but it's not as fast as they promote it to be and the pixel glitches only happen on my google search bar and market widget. hopefully they will get it figured out.

Hey everyone, i did some extensive searching in this general section and didnt see my specific problem, so if theres a thread open on it already, please (kindly) point me to it.
I'm having an interesting problem where sometimes, some of my widgets are not displaying properly. So far its been Beautiful Widgets Home, Arti's Contact widget (4x4), and the AudioGuru profile widget that have done it.
PowerControl, TaskPanel X, and BatteryLife have always been fine, and shortcuts have been fine. I attached some pics of Beautiful home and audio guru. For Beautiful Widgets Home, it should be quite obvious, for AudioGuru those buttons are half the size they should be.
I cant pinpoint when it happens, although the last time it did, it was after i closed the stock browser.
Lastly, rebooting the phone fixes it, trashing the widgets and re-adding them fixes it, and connecting to my laptop via usb and mounting the sd-card fixes it.
I'd like to know whats causing it. Has anyone else experienced this bug with any of their widgets?
safe to say it's a bug with the launcher, this sometimes happens on custom launchers and it's a quick fix by just restarting your custom launcher.
usually it happens when the phone tries to rotate and then gets confused so the widgets get all screwed up. Shouldn't happen that often though.
i have it happen on LP everyonce and a while if i'm in a landscape game and then go back to my portrait homescreen, but i'd say 95% of the time they fix themselves.
Well I appreciate the insight but I'm not on a custom launcher which is sorta why it bothers me a bit more.

you might be right but I'm not so sure its gbread per say. as an update, since my last post, it was doing it at random times. i could not reproduce the issue intentionally but it happened one to two times a day.
I started toying with LauncherPro yesterday and was impressed so earlier this morning I bought Launcher Pro Plus. it hasnt happened once while using it. So I've recreated every screen i had on the stock launcher in LauncherPro Plus (and then some) with no issues.
The phone has only been release less than a month. I think that devs are still getting to grips or updating existing apps to be compatible with GB.
i find it hard to believe that widgets running on the stock launcher within gingerbread might mess up due to the dev needing to change the code to be gb compatible yet those same ones running within launcherpro are just fine. It has to be something specific to the launcher itself and not gb the os and third party. although i haven't spent any time testing just the widgets that come out of the box to see if its 3rd party only that's having the problem
Anyone else having this issue. Several random rainbow colored lines running through non-htc widgets like Pandora widget, Google search widget, etc. It didn't bother me as much as before, but now I can't see any or the widget. Is there a fix available for this issue?
Terribly sorry if this is a repost, I searched, but I could not find anything about this.

I have only had it with the Google voice mail widget, I tried removing it and replacing the icon however it never stayed line free. Finally I just removed it all together
It's because almost every non-HTC widget hasn't been written for the qHD resolution yet (which isn't very common) and hence the graphical issues.
lianw is right. I informed HTC about the situation and they confirmed exactly what lianw said. They urged me to contact developers to ask them to consider the qHD resolution in their apps.
Thanks a lot, I'm glad it wasn't something to do with my phone specifically. Is there a possible compatibility mode for word we can use similar to the compatibility mode for apps?

I had the same problem with my non HTC widgets as well. I noticed sometimes it only does this on one pane, and sometimes on all of them. Its happened twice to me so far since I got the phone on release day in the US.
My Doggcatcher and Pandora widgets both exhibited this problem.
Move the App to internal memory. That will eliminate the rainbow lines.

do you realy think it is a good idea to move all app from sd to internal memory?
because the google widget (one for which i had that issue) is allready located in internal memory....

Thats a negative
I've seen this as well, in both 3rd part app widgets and even the HTC power control bar widget (debunking the qHD explanantion) in one case a removal/re-add of the widget fixed it, and in another I had to reboot (just a reboot, not a a reset) the phone.
Additional Info: I've only seen it in "bar" type widgets. HTC Sense power control, tweetdeck bar and post widgets and an app called organizer widget.

No, it won't. Widgets won't even work if you move them to the SD card - they have to be in internal memory to begin with.
I've had this problem with a number of widgets - you get horizontal "hash lines" in the widget, and the only way to fix it is to change the scene or skin.
No problem at all with the HTC widgets, but almost every one of the third-party widgets I've tried have this problem eventually.
Hopefully it's some sort of driver issue that will be fixed in an update. Really irritating when it happens.
Hi guys,
Same problem here, it happens with 3rd party apps and also with with stock apps like g search or tips and I think once it was with youtube widget
I hope that it will be fixed soon.
Same problem here, I get them with Elixir widgets. I also agree about the memory placement not being the problem because Elixir won't even show an option for a widget if its on the SD card. My solution has been to remove and replace the widgets.
I have also had problems like the notification bar disappearing, the tray with the apps, phone and personalization button disappearing, and the sense screen getting caught in the initial carousel motion continuously like when the screen is first unlocked. It keeps looping that animation. Or it just spins continuously, from screen to screen like a slot machine sideways.
So, my take is that this version of Sense may not be as refined as others, or the graphics hardware may need a driver tweak.
Maybe its time for them to step up from the GeForce4 MX series of graphics hardware?
I had the same problem with the News and google Search widget. I was asked by HTC to reset my phone and the problem was resolved. havent seen any rainbow lines since then.
I'm having this same issue. Only on non HTC widgets. Doesn't seen to happen all the time. Rebooting helps sometimes and sometimes not. Others reported that installing another home launcher doesn't cause this and I can confirm this also but then there is no access to the HTC widgets :-( I've found no good solution. Hopefully this will be addressed soon....
I have this problem with HTC's own Notes widget and also SwitchPro
I just wanted to also chime in and say I too, am also a victim of this Widget Distortion issue.
My widget distortion happens with the "Power Control Widget" and has also occurred with the "Google Search Widget." Neither are 3rd party widgets, unless anything not HTC is 3rd party?
It would be nice if everyone that posts about this problem could also post a screen shot of their phone with the distortion...?
Mine comes and goes, at the time of this post its not prsent or I'd post a pic... I will edit this post with a pic once it happens again.
UPDATE: I've added pictures of my distorted widgets.
NEW: Now my camera display is distorted with green lines running through it, just like a bad TV screen.
I was just looking at this. Pressing the home button, or pinching the screen, to get all the home screens at once on screen and look very closely the graphics glitch is still visible on the icon which represents the screen the widget is on. Not sure what this means, other than it's not a scanning issue.
Really annoying!
Pictures taken with my Wildfire, Sorry if the quality ain't good.
I think it its a Sense problem. Needs to be fixed ASAP.
EDIT: Sent a message to HTC
"Hi, I have the HTC Sensation and it is a great phone. However, there are problems with some widgets. Third party widgets have some rainbow distortion on them. This happens now and then. To remove it, I have to remove and re-add the widget. Then the problem persists after a few days. Even the official HTC Notes widget has this problem. Went from a G2 to this One S yesterday. I'm not too impressed.
No dedicated menu button
There is enough room for one on the bottom but they only put 3.
What happens now is that Android (or Sense or something) detects when there are menu options and puts a button on the screen for it taking away real estate from the application.
No trackball
I used this a lot on my G2 especially on web pages with small links that I didn't want to missclick. I already miss it. I also used the trackball wake feature in CM on my G2. Now there is only one way to turn the screen on and its a little hard to do one handed. The trackball was in a very natural position to turn on with your thumb. Now without it, it is very awkward to power on with your thumb, you have to hold it very high and I'm affraid of dropping it. Alternatively I could turn it on with my index finger but it spreads my hand way out and still feels weird.
No folders
I'm not sure if this is an ICS thing or a Sense thing (because this phone is an unholy bastardization), but I can't figure out a way to create folders on my home screens. I'm not talking about the Sense folders for applications either. In normal Android builds you can add shortcuts, widgets, folders. The Pandora application shipped with a folder called "My Stations" or something like that. I used this because it only took up 1x1 on a homescreen and let me choose which station was opened. Without it, you need to open the application and it immediately starts playing the last radio station. This is annoying.
Resolution
The DPI isn't any better than my G2, its just a bigger screen. This is pretty disappointing. I would like a crisper display in a flagship device.
Bloat
Its pretty bad. I know most users want Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox, etc... but how about you let us select what we want during the phone setup.
Misc
This is my first Sense device and my first ICS device so again, not sure where this crap is coming from.... When you install an application it creates a shortcut for it on one of your home screens. Putting a shortcut is the simplist thing you can do in Android, why not leave it for the use to do if they want to do it.
On my way to work I was listening to I Heart Radio and while the live streams were okay when I went to the "pandora"-like functionality it would only play one song and then stop. This never happened on my G2. Don't know whats going on here.
I don't care for the browser (which they stupidly call "internet").
I don't care for all of the account options. I went to share a page in the browser, I wanted to email it to myself. So when I went to share page it let me select how to share it. I got "Facebook for HTC Sense", "Mail", "Twitter for HTC Sense", and "Dropbox". I did set up Facebook, but I did not set up mail, twitter, or dropbox. What I wanted was GMail which I had to select "See all..." Then I saw a plethora of garbage bloat that they bundle with the phone and had to scroll down to get to GMail. After I went though this experience I went to share another page to see if GMail showed up at the top... it didn't.
I'm sure I'll have more complaints the more I use it. I used my fiance's upgrade for this one but I get an upgrade in 3 months. If CM9 isn't out by then she'll be using this phone and I'll upgrade to a SGSIII or that yet to be named quad-core LG phone.
Summary
CM9 can't come fast enough.
EDIT
I'll add some good things here.
Good things
Again, this is coming from a G2 so in 2 years things should be better anyways....
It is very thin, and very light.
It has a front facing camera which my G2 did not.
The flashlight, though not as bright as the "High Brightness" Cyanogenmod setting on the G2, is still pretty bright.
The speaker seems to put out a lot of sound. Can't attest to the quality yet but the volume is there.
EDIT #2
Some more good and bad....
Skype Useless
... probably related to Wifi crackling. One of the things I was looking forward to with this phone was the ability to make video calls via Skype. My fiance has an iPad2, my in-laws each have a G2X, and my brother has a SGSII. Skype is useless on this device. There is echoing / cracking and video lag even when on Wifi. I called my brother with this One S and it was useless. I then called him on an iPad2 and it was great. I'm wondering if the problem has to do with Beats Audio. We'll have to wait for an AOSP ROM without Beats to find out.
So I unlocked/rooted/ROM'd ...
I am now running Black Dragon 4.0. I LOVE the menu hack to get rid of the stupid 3 dot menu on all the screens. I like that they kept the ability to longpress home to get the default behavior as well. The launcher seems nice though I haven't played with it too much (which is a good thing, means they have good defaults).
Can't wait for the kernel sources to be released so we can make some more CM9 progress. I really miss the buttons in the dropdown for wifi, brightness, bluetooth, etc. Now I have to dropdown, click settings, scroll down and find brighness.
How's the battery life? My G2 has some HORRENDOUS battery... like it can drain 20% an hour... I go to school for like 6/7 hours and I can leave with like a <20% battery life. Currently using MIUI because that seems to be the best battery life.
Edit: As for a menu button, Google is trying to get rid of that. I read a post about it a couple of months ago. They say it was useless. I completely disagree because I use it quite a lot. I use it way more than the search button which I have literally probably used less than 30 times and I've been on an Android device since the G1 came out.
For everything you just said mostly there are workarounds.
The deidcated menu button now exists through roms...the three button thing on screen is removed. Change of dpi works fine on no sense roms I'm set on 195 on sense not as good. Play market you can stop adding apps onto screens
Bloat just remove yourself root explorer..

I'm the wrong person to ask about battery life (at least during the week). I work in one of these new fancy energy efficient "Green" buildings. We have coating on our windows that block UV with the side effect of also blocking cellular signals. Everyone that works here puts their phones on airplane mode to save battery because we have 0 signal and the phone search all day.
I'll know better this weekend about battery life.

no you can install launchers without root..from market just look for them
to ditch sense though you will need root..and to change dpi you will need root..my advice root lol
by ditching sense i mean install a non sense rom like black dragon or untouchables that strip sense away so the majority is ice cream sandwich without the bloatfest. some apps will be kept in but just use root explorer to rid the rom of it.
the dedicated menu button and ridding the screen of the three dots at the bottom is also because its been taken away and remapped by devs..so again..you need root
most of all..development will kick in soon..so better to root..or if not just use a different launcher but you dont really accomplish what your setting out to do
leedroid should be here soon with a rom,and will do away with most of the bloat anyway...so youll keep sense and most things you complained about will be sorted..
the main thing here is..root..worth it..yes..without..pointless and youll be stuck with htcs crap stock rom..pretty poor for me..but coming from another phone with loads of development..probably biased of how it should be
No Folders?
Just long-tap on the icon and drag it to another icon. THe folder will creat automaticly.

No dedicated menu button
Root and ROM it. People are remapping the multitask key as the menu button, and hold-home now does the multitask. You're on XDA, so I assume you're enthused enough to root and ROM it.
No trackball
Seriously. Please find me an Android device with a trackball nowadays. It's gone...you're just gonna have to deal with it.
Resolution
This display seems pretty crisp. We're working with phones with relatively small displays. There's only so many pixels you can pack into until it doesn't even matter. 720p is about as far as we need to go on phone screens. The qHD screen on this phone has vivid colors and all the qualities of Super AMOLED. The resolution seems plenty high to me. Are you starting 1inch away from the phone and observing pixels?
Bloat
Welcome to flagship carrier devices. Again, you're on XDA, and fully capable of rooting it and removing all that crap. The G2 was a 1-off device that had pretty much stock Android. Consider it a Nexus device, more or less. With a flagship phone, you're going to get bloatware.
Misc
This is my first Sense device and my first ICS device so again, not sure where this crap is coming from.... When you install an application it creates a shortcut for it on one of your home screens. Putting a shortcut is the simplist thing you can do in Android, why not leave it for the use to do if they want to do it.
Sense has nothing to do with this. The new Google Play Store now by default places new apps' icons on the homescreen. It's as easy as going to the prefs in Play Store and disabling. Blame Google if you're going to blame someone.
On my way to work I was listening to I Heart Radio and while the live streams were okay when I went to the "pandora"-like functionality it would only play one song and then stop. This never happened on my G2. Don't know whats going on here.
Don't know what to tell you, but it's obvious that you're describing some sort of software issue, not a hardware issue. If it worked fine on the live streams, then your data connection worked. Talk to iHeartRadio.
I don't care for the browser (which they stupidly call "internet").
So install a new one! ICS Browser+ is exactly like the stock browser. There's also Chrome and Opera. Cmon...
After I went though this experience I went to share another page to see if GMail showed up at the top... it didn't.
This is the one thing I disliked and will agree with you on, although once again, rooting and ROMing can take care of it. That or removing bloatware.

Suit yourself. 4.7 inches is just too big, and at these speeds, you're at the mercy of your data connection, not the processor.

I think nearly all of your points are moot. A lot of your review seems to be based on your lack of willingness to change some preferences and MANAGE your device. If you were on a G2, then you never had to manage stuff like this. Consider it a new experience. If you wanted stock Android, you should've gotten a Galaxy Nexus. I just upgraded from a Nexus S and while I screamed at first at all the Sense crap, I quickly had it rooted, debloated, de-Sensed, and up and running with a nice, fast ROM (Black Magic 4.0).
Give it time. The phone JUST came out.

Sorry... you said Black Magic, not Black dragon.
I'll give it a try in a couple weeks. I like to use my phone a bit before rooting to make sure I didn't get a lemon.
Does the camera work on this one?
Just got the phone and here are my negatives:
1. With lowest brightness setting the screen is horrible (but if you increase it a bit, its ok)
2. No switches in pulldown menu ? I though Sense always had that.....
3. Bottom plastic is not 100% flush at one corner (maybe will exchange, maybe not)
4. In navigation I just couldnt find "setting" button anywhere.....whats up with that ?
gonna go to Verizon and compare to Nexus....I still need Tmo SIM and stores are in same place anyway....I am not a phone freak not wasting time here
Its also very true that until you have 2 devices in hand you cant really compare screen quality...I though my G2x IPS panel for super great, but compared to One S its very warm colored and whites have red tint. Its also hard to use in lowest brightness even in dark room....but with G2x case its because screen is simply too dark, with One S its bright but disgusting to look at due to some "noise"
So, I´ve been having the S for almost a week now.
I have the fullscreen calender list widget on a homescreen. And so far everything ran as it should. But yesterday Sense crashed while I was scrolling to that screen.
And since then I seem not be able to get it running as it was before.
Here is what I tried:
- Reboot (of course)
- Remove and add the widget again
- Remove the widget and place it on another homescreen
But the only thing that seems to be working is not showing all used calenders.
So, I suppose it might have somehting to do with the amount of entries in those calenders. Maybe too many or something.
Anyone else has that problem or know a solution?
I've had that in the beginning.
I'm now with the HTC for ~3 weeks and am connected to exchange, Facebook & Google calendars.
I didn't do anything to overcome this so it might be related to some kind of a "broken" meeting in one of those.
Try choosing only one at a time and then scroll and see if it works. if it does continue to add one by one to narrow the problematic one.
Sorry, forgot to mention that.
I can view every single one without any problem.
But when I view all of them together, Sense FCs.
Right now I am viewing all calenders but the weeknumber one.
Just to make things clear for me:
I'm using the agenda widget of there sense, is it the same with you?
Have you tried the Android one vs. The sense one?

the calendar widget is buggy.
I don't use it anymore since it makes my device to freeze.
I guess we need to wait for an upgrade from htc.
Try resizing it. When it crashes go back to screen that contains widget and quickly put finger on it as though you are going to delete widget. You should now get arrows allowing you to resize. Make the widget smaller. If it is then stable, resize back to full screen again.

but again, I used to have it too, but now it's gone, so I suspect it's related to a broken entry in the calendar and not necessarily the application itself.

Holy cow! That really did work!
Well, at least it´s not instantly FCing. So, let´s see if the problem will come back.
Thank you very much.
Yeah the calendar widget is buggy for me also. Resizing did not helped. I ended up using ICS calendar widget..
Happened to me on day one. You can remove the screen in the helicopter mode and then just readd it again.
HTC should really release an update.

Until there is an update available you might use Business Calendar: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=netgenius.bizcal
I installed the update today, Software numer 1.78.401.2 and so far it seems the issue has been resolved. Haven't tested it for very long yet, but previously it would crash within one minute. I'll report back after at least a full day of use.
Update: The calendar widget hasn't crashed once since I installed the update so I can confirm the issue has been fixed.
Hi,
I've read a bit about the S6 having RAM issues, but I'm not sure, if that's the reason for my trouble.
When going back to the homescreen after having used an app (doesn't really matter which app), the phone lags a bit and after a second or two the homescreen comes up empty as it takes a couple of seconds for it to reload the icons and one widget that I use..
If I clear all my apps from the recent list, I can go maybe half an hour to an hour before it starts doing it again. It clearly speeds up right after I've done that.
I looks like my RAM usage varies quite quickly between 58% and 91%. Sometimes it shows that Google Play Services uses almost 600 MB as does Snapchat(!) and my browser (even though only one tab is open).
Do I need to return my phone or is this only a software problem? Does using another launcher even help anything here?
Hope you guys can help me!
Thanks in advance!
I'd use smart manager to clear all, and then clear data in application settings for Touchwiz home (This might lose all your home pages/icons/widget etc not sure. I'd then reboot the phone.
If it's still doing it after that, try Nova launcher or similar. I get not lag but the odd tiny redraw every now and again.
Ok, thanks for the tip.
I've gone over to using Google Now Launcher for a bit, and it seems to behave much better and more smooth. Unfortunately I can't use the stock clock/weather widget outside the TW Launcher.
I really hope Samsung addresses this in the next update. I was under the impression that this should have been fixed in the present release.

Yeah that's a real pain. I use HD widgets while waiting on Samsung launcher to be improved. You have to pay but it's pretty good with good weather.

Yeah, actually used HD widgets as well on the Google Launcher.
For info, I exchanged my device for a new one due to the home button being loose and making the clicking noise. My new device seems not to have the memory problem like my original device, or at least far from as much/often. So must have been faulty somehow. I have exactly the same apps installed...
