Suggestion Using Torrents for Rom/Radio downloads - Thunderbolt General

Just wondered if anyone had considered creating torrents for things instead of posting links to upload sites or having to worry about having to host things on a private server. This could solve a lot of problems and make downloads much faster for everyone. Linux users probably already know that many of the linux distro sites offer torrents just for that reason.

I think they like to track the # of downloads, I don't know if you can do that with Torrents.

Another reason is, such as with the bamf previews, they can take them down. On a torrent they do not have that option.

This was suggested a couple months ago. I seeded BAMF and BAMF Remix 1.6.3 or something for a couple weeks and posted it in the BAMF thread because people asked but no one used it.

Why should they really care if they can take them down or not? If there is a problem with the ROM and it is bricking everyone's phone, just make a new sticky that says "Don't install this". This whole recurring theme about "don't re-post the ROM cause you might piss off the devs" is kind of silly.

Because they were strictly previews, and it was stated as such that they would only be available for a short time. And honestly if a dev wants control over their Rom and where it's located, well more power to them.

So we are rooting our phones against the wishes of our carrier and manufacturer but don't want to upset a dev by posting their rom where folks can download it faster? We do the same thing with most all other applications on the internet without regard to the original developers. Firefox has retired Firefox 4 but you can still find plenty of places on the net to download it.

Way I see it, the devs have the right to request that no one mirror their roms for what ever reason, be it tracking downloads, ability to take them down (again for what ever reason) or just plain being a ass. If people dont agree with that request, they can and should feel free to download a different rom.
Also with torrents, can you really be sure you are getting the correct file? how many people actually check the md5 before trying to flash the rom? Keeping it in the control of the dev insures, at least partially, that the download is correct.

Or we can continue with the spirit that makes the internet great including things like custom ROMs, and do whatever the hell we want to do.
This code is owned by Android / HTC. Did the devs get their permission before they modified it and posted their custom ROM?
Please, this whole "lets don't upset the devs" is getting really old. XDA is full of a bunch of dev ass kissers and smart ass devs.
If someone is too dumb to generate a MD5 then that is their fault.

As stated above, torrents are a bad idea when it comes to flashing a Rom. Also if you do ever upload a Rom anywhere make sure you ask the developer first no matter whether you think you should or not

[Q] G2x Desktop UAstring (framework-res.apk)

I'm so fed up with roms on the g2x but ok lets get beyond that...
I've noticed some builds don't have the user agent string baked into the browser so you have to use the about:debug method which does not hold nor work properly.
I'm wondering if there's any other file i can edit to work around this...framework file by chance? Help appreciated
Why not just try a different Browser.apk?
have grabbed browser apk's from multiple builds that have the option and it working, fixed permissions and such and replaced the file but upon opening they all force close

Then you build and compile your own custom rom that has all the features you want/need in it. People should be thankful for whatever custom work has been done on the phone. Since the roms were developed at no cost to you, and you have a choice whether you want to use it or not; you don't really have the right to be "fed up" with the roms out there.

I see so many people complaining about the ROM development on this phone... But people need to realize that people have lives outside of XDA, and Android Development. haha
FWIW and you guys should see, i've been a contributing member on this site for quite some time now, i donate to developers and i'm not some ungreatful kid, i'm an adult with a serious unique question...if neither of you can help me i would appreciate it if you could take your negative connotations out.
I will find a way to decompile the apk, edit the uastring, and then recompile.

[Q] Would you use torrent downloads for roms?

I am thinking of setting up torrents for some of our amazing ROM's to give people another way to download which in theory could be ALOT faster than any of the direct download services Devs use at the moment.
If your a dev and think this is a great idea and want me to start a torrent for your ROM PM me or post here!
If your not sure what a torrent or torrenting is check out the good old wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_(protocol)
After all, most if not all good Linux distros offer a torrent why shouldnt android ROMS
I would love to! But i think it would only be worth it for more popular ROMs.

I use torrents a lot!
The beauty of torrent is the ability to verify files being downloaded. It just might end the problem of file corruption during download ....
Probably one of the best ideas for exchanging ROMs. I hope that the rest of the devs will do the same.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium
I would, but only for popular ROMs which would have more seeders. Torrents can't be used for ROMs which aren't so popular as it would result in slow downloads. Besides, torrents are much faster and no need to "Wait 60 seconds or go premium" or writing Capatchas.
This can be a solution. The only problem I see is keeping the latest version of a rom. Since lots of people may not be able to read posts it can be a lot of work for the devs to keep their opening posts updated with the latest sources.
This may not be such a big problem here in the DS forum since we are not so many (sadly the DS is not one of HTCs bestsellers) - but imagine the bashing if some don't read the latest torrent written two posts before.
Nevertheless, torrents can help, but I agree only for popular roms.
Agree completely, but yes, we need seeders....
Also the attitude of the people out here, if you download, seed it back!!!!
My main concern is speed, has to be at least 100kb/s, thus seeders are going to be a concern.
Thanks for all the replys, ok then so what ROM's do you think we should do to start with?
Definitely primo and ice cold sandwich
Swyped from my HTC Desire S....
I agree this is a good idea but unless someone has a seedbox which can seed round the clock 24/7 I can't see it working because most people won't seed back thus another dead torrent.

Well I have created the page in the dev section with the links here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1559247
And my laptop for all new torrents will be running at least solidly for a good few days, I do only have about 150kb/s upload so it will not be amazing fast to start with but will add new torrents once people have download the others etc.
SEED men SEED!!!
@zacthespack
What would also be awesome if it can also be uploaded to Usenet.
Also it must be a split file with par2 files.
I have dedicated seedbox and 100 Mbit FTH line. Will look at this later if there is a need.

Once my seedbox sorts itself out mine will be used for this to, over the day I have had quite a few hits so it looks like people really are interested.
More seedboxs the better, check out the dev thread on it for the torrents running at the mo, once my seedbox is working I shall do many many more
Torrents might be a good idea for the latest ROMs but the older (maybe more stable once) will have lower seeds IMHO.
Anyway, my laptop (office equipment) dsnt allow me to use torrents on any network.
Personally I wouldn't. I DL ROMs directly from my phone, and I don't know how to use torrents on my PC anyway
I don't mind if the dev includes a torrent, as long as they include a regular DL aswell.

Well yes I think the devs should still give a normal link, but so many complain of slow downloads etc a torrent option would give them something else to use
(plus it is very easy to use torrents and there are torrent clients for android even)

[Q]Are ROMs really safe?

I've tried searching google\xda and can't find an answer. I'm addicted to flashing and I've always wondered...are they safe? What I mean, is there a possibility this .zip file your downloading contain any spyware or some other sort of program that maybe collects your personal info? Such as credit numbers, passwords, and other personal info? So please let me know what you guys think. Thanks.
Sent from my S2 Skyrocket running CM9 9.1.0 stable
If you're downloading a ROM from a known developer, nil to very-near-nil. There's always a tiny risk that something slips in by mistake, but no dev on here is going to ruin their name by making a mod full of Trojans and spyware.
Ultimately, you're responsible for which ROMs you do and do not download. If you're uncomfortable about a certain ROM, don't download it (but don't ask this question in the thread; you'll get flamed to hell and back). The great thing about XDA users is that we find that stuff if it's there. Any Trojan or spyware program will leave a signature behind somewhere, be it a process or a buried file, even reported data usage. I would say that, if nothing else, 100% of ROMs in the Skyrocket section should be considered "safe" in terms of malware and spyware.
Is there a way to check the reputation of a developer? The only think I can find so far is how long they been members and thanks count.
Sent from my S2 Skyrocket running CM9 9.1.0 stable
Really do you think all these people would be downloading and flashing if malware was contained.
Yes the possibility exists as root users we are actually the most vulnerable and desired targets for malware.
We also have a tool up our sleeves that instantly rids us of it our recovery.
I check zips before flashing I'm not a noob I know what I'm putting on my phone.

If they're posting here, they're almost certainly not out to steal your info. tbqh, you shouldn't be storing credit card data on a Skyrocket anyway. If it really, really bugs you, wait a week after the ROM comes out to flash it, and then read the entire thread (which you should be doing before flashing a ROM anyway) before making a decision. If someone's sneaking malware in, the community will have found it by then.
Okay. Thank you guys. I don't store my info on my skyrocket but such as the websites and apps is what I was saying. And yes I do read the complete thread before flashing. I just flashed this rom and I really like it but I never heard of the dev. Which is why I was asking. Would a avg or some other sort of virus protector help at all having installed on my phone? I don't use any anti-virus/phone protection software. They really don't seem to do anything but eat up battery. Just use common sense. Only download apps from the Android market or XDA (a lot of those warez sites put bootloaders in the apps), and use some kind of ad detector to make sure you aren't loading something that's going to text you or send notifications that look like system messages.
T Bender seems to know his stuff good ... Thank Bender for the nice presentation .. And plus one on common sense is essential

[Q] Who would use this site? http://romwatcher.com

I am starting up a new site and I would really like to see what people opinions are of it.
I have been talking to a few developers and users on here about it and there seems to be some interest.
It basically organizes Recent Rom releases from XDA by Make, Model, Dev, OS, etc. I feel like it would be a quicker way for users to see whats new with there phones.
It still uses the Developers links, info, images, Donation code, links back to XDA threads ,etc.
I am willing to put the time in to make it great if there is a need for it.
So let me know!

As most developers host their own roms on private servers to watch and control downloads many will not be willing to allow their work to be posted in a place where they have no control. Think about it for a min. If a dev releases a rom with a major bug like bricking a device they can pull it. This has been tried many times already and has never gone anywhere.
People flash roms like it is something cool to do without thinking about what could happen. Flashing an Expermental OS to a $500 device is not something to be done for fun with no understanding of what they are doing.
I understand what your saying. The site still uses all the Download links the devs provided so if they pull the download it will just be a deadlink. But yeah the management of actually pulling the ROM from the site would be a hassle. Plus judging from the results of this thread there doesn't seem to be that much interest in the idea. haha

Seems to be useful. Many users try to get stable ROM's for their mobiles.
I would suggest to add "stable" and "experimental" ROM's category tab in the site for each mobile you provide.
Also get permission from the developers before posting their download links on your site!
Good Luck with your site!:good:
The Stable/experimental attribute is a good idea. I have been contacting developers asking permission and so far no one has had a problem with anything :fingers-crossed:
Thanks!

That's not true, because first u failed to mention rom's are made by Talustus, and you say no updates for months? Than care to explain cm-10.1-20130614-UNOFFICIAL-i9210t, also TWRP is also built from scratch by Talustus, i say that you should have, at least, went to irc, take time to know the work, and ask for permission, if Talustus has not set anything else up he has a reason for that... Any of the ppl on irc could have done what you did, but no one done it out of respect for the developer, so you should have asked before doing it, i have been sharing with tal's permission on a portuguese forum, but everysingle time he asks to take a link down i take it out imediatly, and if and when he decides he only wants to distribute on irc i will take all links down imediatly, because like every single developer here on xda he has the right to not allow mirrors.
Just my 2 cents.

If people do not agree in joining on irc to download latest files ... bad luck for them.
U have no idea about how much work we all spend to this.
One is for sure u now forced me to stop providing updates, people will love u for that i guess.
