Difference b/w i9020 & i9023 - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So iam thinking of getting a nexus s slcd i9023 indian version....
And would like to know if there are any other differences besides the screen.....

According to this sticky: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1031760
The main difference is the radio bands.

Apart from the radio bands (for different countries I guess) the biggest (and in my opinion, most important) is that the i9020 has the Super Amoled screen whilst the i9023 has the Super LCD.

The i9020 and i9023 should both operate on the same GSM (Quad) and 3G bands (AWS). The difference in the SLCD vs SAMOLED screen. The i9020a operates on the 850/1900 3G bands.

Super amoled is the best...so i9020!

Only the screen. Everything else is the same. Plus the screen is an advantage if you're not an AMOLED lover. Better battery life with SLCD.

Got mine from letsbuy.com. Bought 21st Jun'11 night, delivered 24th evening (In Mumbai)
Love the screen so far, though it's SLCD. (prev. phone was a Moto Milestone 1)
Pretty fast.
Not properly tested GPS\Wifi yet. Wifi signal strength shows as low, though router is pretty close. (Laptop shows full strength signal) Think this issue was mentioned in some thread.
Issues so far:
Youtube app won't work, won't uninstall.
youtube site not loading on browser.
Unable to register my phone on samsung's website.
Facebook contacts not getting integrated into phone contacts. This was pretty seamless in my milestone.

Facebook not syncing is because Google disabled it. You have to root and flash a custom rom to red enable this feature

Try factory reseting your phone. The youtube issue affected me too. Factory reseting the phone fixes this.

2.3.4 Any changes you've noticed?

Besides what is listed in the Google Mobile forum post, since 2.3.4 my Nexus S Compass is actually usable and accurate. Used to be all over the place before.
The 2.3.3 color change did not bother me, but the 2.3.4 update changed the colors, again, and it doesn't bother me. It also fixed my girlfriend's nexus s that experienced total network loss and would not ever come out of airplane mode.

I noticed that the radio baseband has changed it was kb1 now its kd1
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
Noticed new radio (and likely some radio framework from Samsung) allows for much quicker switchover from WCDMA Only to GSM Only in the Phone Info Set Preferred Network Type. this used to take upto a min to switch between modes; not it's seconds.
The colors are vastly improved from 2.3.3. They're actually perfect now. Also I've noticed that the launcher now has a black border around the dock (with the browser and phone icons).
i still have both wifi and 3g icons when i'm connected to wifi, and the wifi icon shows zero signal even though its not.
GT Video?
I wish it introduced something useful to the Nexus S, like 720p video recording, or WiFi Calling, or Google Voice in-dock notifications....
I'm stuck on edge now....can I try to reflash anyone??
I've never noticed this before, there's this "talkback keyboard" now. I'm not sure what to think of it, I've followed the tutorial and it seemed pretty bothersome. I'll have to check again what exactly it's supposed to do and how it's supposed to work, it's more than just a keyboard it seems, almost like a trackpad+keyboard+keypad+gesture area for commands, all in one.
Someone pull the Gtalk video app please!
Tags are now finally deletable!
Video chat won't work over 3G on T-Mobile. Says Wifi only.
Gtalk works good but fring does not

Better colors? Black borders on the launcher dock? I see zero visual changes whatsoever.

Now(2.3.4) I can delete NFC my Tags!
GTalk video is only over WIFI.
GTalk video is really bad with quality (like 3g video in Europe in 2002).
(work faster at least for me).
this thread makes me want to wet my pants! if the compass if usable, then they've dampened it! but nfc tags were always deletable on 2.3.2? just click and hold on the tag in tags app.
EXCITED TO UPDATE!
I could always disable and delete tags :s
Excited for nightly with update xD

Can anyone confirm if graphic acceleration has been enabled in the browser.
Seems much improved when scrolling image heavy sites.

This phone has issues. Tmo says no calls lately?

I had to call tmo today to order a 3rd set of g2x.
Reboots and freezing have gotten out of hand.
I had a Rep tell me they have not gotten calls about the issues recently and thought they were just about ironed out.
I got a real bad retention agent who basically said go elsewhere.
Really. But even she was better than Verizon.
I called back about my bill and got a great agent who read the notes from retention I think as she knew we both were having issues.
The transfer went from customer support to loyalty.
Loyalty sent 2 new phones out today. Same day.
This will be our 3rd set of g2x.
Tmo claims call ins are down. Complaints too.
I hope these phones work or we will have to look at sensations.
We love the phones. Not the problems.
And don't want sensations.
Why the heck is tmo not getting the galaxy s2?

Did you try factory data reset ?
That seems to work on some of the phones that are having reboot problems.
I'm on my 3rd G2X and the only problem I've had with all 3 is poor data reception
at my work location. (while the MyTouch 4g does just fine there)
I returned my phone to TMo for a refund over a week ago but Craigslist
got to me in when I saw a G2X for $260 so I'm back.
Too bad this phone is only capable of 14mbps.
I'm definitely down for getting a Sensation though.
I'll just get one off Craigslist.
Anyone see anywhere what speed the Sensation can do ?
TMo will doubtless get the Galaxy S II, dont worry.
The Sammysung Hawk is going to be 21 mbps buts it not dual core.

My phone has some hellacious troubles with lost signal. I did the GB leak update, but that didn't take care of it. I drove from my house in Chicago to one of the burbs to check out a Sammy Charge from Verizon and the phone lost signal at least a half dozen times. On the way back, the Charge didn't lose signal once. Don't know if it's faulty software when it transitions from "4G" to lower speeds, bad radio driver or bad antenna design. This is basically a good phone, but dropping calls when I'm driving is simply not acceptable when my N1 and now the Charge don't have the problem, driving the exact same routes.

This is simply false. The Orion is 1.2 Ghz which is why the OS feels snappier. Android doesn't use the GPU for accelerated graphics except in a few apps. Honeycomb is the first OS that really pushes GPU acceleration.
Go on Youtube and compare 3D games between both phones and see which one lags out and stumbles to keep up. Hint (it isn't the G2x)

Why do people keep swapping phones?!?!? Seriously? There hasn't been any new OS updates from T-Mobile/LG so you're not going to get a different software experience. I am waiting for an update - if the update doesn't fix it then I can say it's a faulty hardware. Also the leaked GB is useless as it uses the same baseband and kernel as our current system. If you flash Cyanogenmod and still get reboots then you might have a faulty phone as that's a completely separate kernel.

Shipping date on your sensation: Later date means better device?

After looking through these threads and looking at peoples phones with and without issues, it seems all the devices made with a shipping date starting in June is better than the ones that have been made on 5/24 like some of ours including mines. I've seen that peoples shipping dates (the dates they see on the back of their sensation boxes) usually don't have the crazy landscape WiFi issues, Bluetooth issue, and now a better screen if their devices shipping date started in June. Can some of you guys confirm this?

Mine is 6/2 and I have no issues at all.
Where can I find the date on the box?
Mine is also 6/2/11. The only issue (if you even want to call it that) is the drop in the WiFi signal when I cover up the top portion of the phone. However, in order for this to occur, the phone has to be held in a rather unnatural way. For me, this is a non-issue.
Mine is 6/1 on the box. The battery cover has a date of 5/17. All my initial issues with cell signal were fixed with a new style sim and my random WiFi drops unrelated to death grip seemed to have been fixed by flashing a newer version of dd-wrt on my router. No other issues to report here.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
Mine has a date of 5/30 and has no problems whatsoever. The only problem it has was the WiFi Death Grip issue but I fixed that by boosting the WiFi reception on the phone. Mine doesn't even drop a single bar anymore. Even when I'm laying in bed which is on a different floor than the router.
Like someone else said. My display also looks better than others I have seen. Two guys at my work have the Sensation and even they asked me why my display looked better. I was expecting this phone to perform bad in sunlight but it performs better than any phone I have used in the past 2 years (Nexus One, Nexus S, Vibrant and G2X) just to name a few. I really can't believe how bright the display is. The colors almost pop off the screen like on a Super AMOLED.
I also see people reporting only 115mb of available memory on a fresh reboot but I get almost 300mb of free memory on a fresh boot. My Sensation also doesn't seem as stutter in the UI as the two guys I work with or like I have seen in videos.
Maybe your on to something with the dates but it also includes some shipped in late may.
My box reads 5/30/11 and so far is working good...also not experiencing the numerous issues listed on all the Sensation threads.
However I've only had the phone for 24 hours so time will tell...
So far I'm loving it and I paid full retail !

Yeah that's probably true. My phones a 5/13 says my hboot screen(earliest I think I've seen on here) and it seems to not run as I planned. Go to the g2x? If LG released a 6-core phone and the battery lasted 2 days I still wouldn't buy from them.
I only get ~150mb we need some pictures of those ~300mb people for proof. Most I've gotten on mine was 177mb. Mine was also ~150mb out of the box. We don't need a cyanogenmod...the UI is annoying and laggy. We need a stock gingerbread! I do like sense though but when it slows the balls out of your phone, it sucks.

Jrwingate, while you are at it, could you care to test something about the front facing camera for me? Start the camera app, activate the front camera, hold the phone in your hands looking straight at it, as you normally would. Does the camera show your face completely ? Cause on mine's , I have to tilit the phone somewhat downwards towards my stomach in order for it to capture my whole face. If I don't do that, it shows my eyes and above . It seems like the camera angle is not flat with the phone . Please let me know, cause I can still exchange this device. Other guys, could you test this also?

HTC Sensation Z710A - Telstra - Australian Edition

Hi Peoples,
I have recently purchased the HTC Sensation Z710A - Australia Edition which operates on the 850 Mhz Band for the Telstra network in Australia.
I was just wondering if anyone wants a ROM rip of this radio/OS. If so, does someone wanna swing me instructions so I can dump it for them. Its running HTC Sense 3.0 and has all the usual trimmings, just operating on the different frequency bands.
Kernel: 2.6.35.10-g6d6a25c
Baseband: 10.43a.9007.00U_10.51.9007.27_M3
Build Number: 1.35.841.6 CL83095 release-keys
As expected, its a S-On edition, bootloader locked.
Thanks
I got a Telstra Sensation, too.
Can I ask you, what panel did you get? AUO or Sharp?
To find out which panel you have:
Use terminal emulator (free from the market) and run the command dmesg (root is not needed obviously)
it will output a bunch of stuff.. look for this line and report it: (if you can't find it you can long press on the output in terminal emulator copy all and then paste it into an email and send it to yourself)
just look for the line (the numbers might not be the same) [ 9178.895111] Panel Type = PANEL_ID_PYD_??????

It's most definitely not negligible.
Any high contrast environment (white text on black background is most evident) makes the screen ghost and flicker blatantly.
To be fair, I haven't seen a Sharp screen in person, so I don't know if it is better, though everyone says there isn't any of those problems with the Sharp at all. But the AUO is unacceptable.

Hey Kezzainc,
Yeah, its likely it will be different. The radio will be 100% different from what is on offer for the US versions (currently) So you'd have to wait for Telstra (at this stage) to release new ROM/Radio.
In saying that, its likely as the 850 version gets rolled out globally, we'll see some more standard ROMS built, like Cyanogen etc. but this is probably not gonna happen until around August when Boot Loaders start to get unlocked....

also rocking a telstra sensation as of yesterday (got the desire on global launch and the sensation on telstra launch, toot toot).
checked my screen deets when browsing thr WP thread, and i have an acer too. Whilst if you look for ghosting its there, its not an issue to me. Im pretty sure that every unit telstra has will be acer as well. The taiwan units are the sharps (Which is alot of the US).
I think some of the tearing is also due to sense, not the screen. Im happy with my acer fed sensation.

thank you for the post
Is the notification LED still there? Seems like that thing has a tendency to disappear if the carriers get their way.
Also curious about the battery. Any idea if it's the same as in the international One X, or increased a bit? Looking forward to information on how the battery performs.
I have been following the battery thread in the HTC One X forum, and there appears to be something funky going on - only about 3-3.5 hours of screen time with active use, but more than 6 hours with video playback and over 10 hours with the screen set to never time out and just left out on a desk. So it's not the screen that's sucking up all the juice. Hopefully we'll get better battery life with the S4 as opposed to what they're seeing with the Tegra 3, which seems to be the likely candidate.
how about nfc... does it look like AT&T disabled Google Wallet to prepare for ISIS ?

Hows the reception/signal? According to the software you're using and to this thread, you're using an older radio. Just wondering if its working perfectly for you of if there was some echoing or data drops.
Did you have the one x to compare both?
Wow, Fantastic Questions! I'll answer what I can at the moment.
Notification LED: Yes it's there, so no worries about that.
Data Connection: Haven't had my data drop yet and I've been in both New York and New Jersey. Seems very very stable and I've been getting great speeds on "4G"
NFC: NFC is there, Google Wallet is downloadable from the Google Play store, However, I think Google still has it locked to certain carriers, so I get a message saying it's not certified for my device/carrier.
Camera: Just as fast as the One X as far as I can tell. It's very very quick. I've compared it to the recorded times for the One X and it's almost dead on as far as how fast the camera boots and takes pictures.
Battery: I'll update the thread later tonight with some Battery stats. Overall, I feel like the device lasts through the day with no issues going about 2 days or so. However, I'm not in an area that has 4G LTE deployed yet. This is all on "4G"
is it confirmed that there are no micro SD slot?

I live in Northern Jersey and also, I've only seen dropbox on there as far cloud storage goes.
Any way to confirm if it really does have the AWS frequency for T-Mobile's 3G(I refuse to call it 4G) network? There are conflicting reports where the HTC website says it does but the FCC filing doesn't seem to show the frequency.
I couldn't tell you offhand, I would probably need to get a tmobile sim and test it. Unless there's an app out there that grabs that information.

Can you access service mode? I recall long ago when you're in service mode you can choose which bands can be activated and with that it should show AWS
You can use this as a reference: http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...rk-frequency-your-samsung-i9000-galaxy-s.html
Whats the battery capacity? The same as One X (1800mAh) or is it the one from One S (1650mAh)?
Battery is same as the One X, 1800mah

I'm not so sure. If the OP can check that little "door" at the top right of the phone slightly towards the back, that may be a microSD expansion slot.
